Six Months Contract With The Mafia God

”They were already coming for me.” Dimitri looked at the dark window. ”This only gives me more to work with.”

Marco shifted. ”He said something about Isabella, didn’t he? About who made the pills.”

”He said he’ll find out.” Dimitri’s voice was even. ”And when he does, she’ll hear it from him.”

”Boss...”

”I know.”

”He’ll find out eventually. Luca is not stupid.”

”No. He isn’t.” Dimitri was silent for a moment. He thought of Dante on the other end of the line, steady and certain, telling him what he owed. A man with nothing hidden, speaking to a man who had hidden everything. ”He gave me everything he had, Marco. And I gave him a doctor and a bottle of pills.”

”It’s what you could give.”

”It’s what I chose to.”

Marco didn’t answer. There was nothing to say.

Dimitri stood and crossed to the window. The city lay spread out below him, lit and quiet. Somewhere out there, past the hills, a man was breaking his last tie to the organization that had made him. And on the other side of the same city, his father sat in a study Dimitri could picture without trying, and waited.

”The doctor says she’s stable,” Dimitri said. ”That’s what I told myself I was waiting for.”

”Yes.”

”Then it’s time.”

Marco looked up. ”You’re going to him?”

”Tomorrow,” Dimitri said. ”I’ll go to my father tomorrow.”

*THE NEXT DAY*

POV: DIMITRI

Dimitri did not call ahead.

He drove to the estate at ten the next morning with Marco beside him and said nothing for the length of the road. The gates opened before the car reached them. Someone had been watching. Someone had been told to expect him.

A guard met him at the door and led him through the house without a word. The corridors were quiet. The study at the back was exactly as he remembered it, with the heavy doors, the soundproofed walls, the view of the olive grove.

Antonio was sitting at his desk when Dimitri came in. He did not rise. He did not look surprised.

”I wondered which day,” Antonio said.

”Then you’ve had time to prepare.”

”I have.” Antonio set down his pen. ”Sit.”

”No.”

The word hung between them. Antonio looked at him for a moment, and something changed in his face, small and quickly hidden. The last time he had given that order, his son had obeyed.

”As you like,” Antonio said.

Dimitri crossed the room and stopped at the edge of the desk. He did not raise his voice. He had never needed to.

”Isabella has been taking a compound made in your laboratory for years,” he said. ”It was built to look like medication and made to keep her dependent. Dr. Armani delivered it. You supplied it.”

Antonio’s expression did not change.

”You’ve been speaking to Armani,” he said.

”He told me everything.”

”I imagine he did. He never had much courage.” Antonio folded his hands. ”Go on. I assume there is a question.”

”Why?”

Antonio was silent for a moment.

”You sat in this room,” he said slowly, ”and let me explain Prometheus to you. You asked what they did there. You stood where you are standing now and listened to me as though you had never heard the name.”

”Yes.”

”You knew.”

”I knew before I walked in.” Dimitri’s voice was even. ”I wanted to hear how you’d say it.”

”And what did you learn?”

”That you’d listed psychological conditioning as one of the things your laboratory does.” Dimitri held his father’s gaze. ”You said it so calmly. I didn’t think you’d already done it to someone.”

For the first time, Antonio looked away. He turned his head toward the window and the grove beyond, and for a few seconds he did not speak.

”Do you want the answer,” he said at last, ”or do you want to be angry?”

”I want the answer.”

”Then sit down, and I will give it.”

”I’ll stand.”

Antonio let out a breath through his nose. It might have been a laugh. ”Your mother used to do that. Refuse a chair out of principle.”

”Don’t.”

”Very well.” Antonio turned back. His eyes were cold, level, untroubled. ”She was sixteen. A frightened girl with a father who had no idea what to do with her. Lorenzo went looking for a doctor. I made sure the doctor he found would be a doctor I could reach.”

”Why?”

”Because the Russo alliance depended on that girl.”

”I’m aware.”

”Then you’re aware that an alliance is only as strong as the person it’s built on.” Antonio’s voice was precise and unhurried. ”Lorenzo wanted a marriage. I wanted a marriage. But marriage is a promise made by people, and people break promises when they are given reason. Isabella was a bright, restless young woman. She would have grown up wanting things. She would have wanted to choose.”

”So you took the choice away.”

”I made her steady.” Antonio inclined his head slightly. ”A woman who depends on the hand that feeds her does not run to the enemy. She doesn’t wander. She stays where she is placed. She is calm, and she is loyal, and she never knows why.”

Dimitri did not move, but he looked at his father calmly.

”And me?” he asked.

”You?”

”What was I meant to be in all this?”

Antonio considered the question with what looked like genuine care. ”The reason she stayed,” he said. ”A girl raised to believe she belongs to someone does not look for another. You were never required to love her. Only to be there.”

Dimitri’s hands were very still at his sides. ”You let me think the engagement was a contract.”

”It was.”

”You made it a cage.”

”I made it hold.”

”It was never meant to harm her,” Antonio said. ”It was meant to hold her. The anxiety was real, you understand. I didn’t create it. I only made certain it would never go away.”

”She seized two nights ago.”
