Six Months Contract With The Mafia God

The hunt for Dante began in earnest that afternoon.

Dimitri and his teams tore through the intelligence that Marco had compiled, looking for patterns, for connections, for anything that would lead to where Dante was hiding.

They found him three days later.

In a safehouse in Jersey City. An abandoned warehouse that had been converted into a command center. With Dante inside, along with at least a dozen armed men, planning his next move.

***

The warehouse smelled like old concrete, rust, and the particular funk of men who’d been living in close quarters with minimal hygiene. Dimitri registered all of it as he walked through the entrance, his footsteps echoing through the cavernous space.

Alone.

No weapon in his hand. No backup waiting in the wings. Just him, walking into a space where Dante had at least a dozen armed men positioned around him.

It was a calculated move.

It was also insane.

But Dimitri needed Dante to understand something fundamental: he wasn’t afraid of him. Wasn’t afraid of his men, wasn’t afraid of his guns, wasn’t afraid of anything Dante could throw at him.

Dante was sitting at a table in the center of the warehouse, maps and documents spread in front of him. When he looked up and saw Dimitri, his entire body went rigid.

For a moment, there was complete silence. Complete stillness. The kind of pause that happens when someone’s brain is trying to process something that doesn’t fit into their model of how the world works.

Then Dante stood.

He was taller than Dimitri expected, maybe six foot two, dark hair shot with gray, the kind of weathered face that came from decades of living in the shadows. There was something in his eyes that suggested intelligence, ruthlessness, the marks of a man who’d survived in a brutal world by being as brutal as necessary.

But there was also something else. Something burning underneath. Obsession. Rage. The kind of fury that comes from being wronged.

”Dimitri Valentino,” Dante said, his voice carrying an accent that was Calabrian by way of New York, rough and measured. ”You have balls walking in here alone. I’ll give you that.”

”Where are your men?” Dimitri asked, not bothering with pleasantries. ”The ones positioned in the rafters, the ones watching the exits, the ones who should have taken me down the moment I entered.”

Dante smiled, and it was a genuine expression, respect and something that might have been amusement.

”I told them to stand down,” Dante said. ”I wanted to see you. Wanted to understand the man who killed my brother.”

The words hung in the air like a physical thing.

Dimitri processed them. Calculated their meaning. Understood in that moment what had been driving this entire war.

”Sal,” Dimitri said.

”My brother,” Dante confirmed, his voice dropping to something colder, sharper. ”My blood. My family. You walked into his territory, and you put a bullet between his eyes without hesitation. Without negotiation. Without even acknowledging that he was a human being.”

Dimitri remembered Rome. Remembered the alley. Remembered Sal’s cold smile and his confidence that fifteen men could take Dimitri. Remembered the moment where Sal had refused the chance to walk away, had chosen violence instead.

”He was warned,” Dimitri said coldly.

”He was,” Dante agreed, and he pulled out a chair and gestured to it. ”Sit. We should talk before one of us ends up dead.”

It was a power move, offering the chair. Trying to establish dominance through the simple act of deciding how the conversation would happen. Dimitri respected it enough to take the seat, settling into it with the casual ease of a man who wasn’t concerned that armed men could shoot him from three different angles at any moment.

Because they wouldn’t. Not yet.

”You know why I let you walk in here?” Dante asked, pouring himself a drink from a bottle of expensive whiskey that sat on the table. He poured a second glass and slid it to Dimitri. ”Because I needed you to understand something. I needed you to look into my face and see that I’m not some minor player you can intimidate into backing down.”

Dimitri picked up the glass but didn’t drink from it.

”I built an empire,” Dante continued, his voice taking on the cadence of a man who’d been waiting a long time to say these words. ”Not as large as yours, maybe. Not as sophisticated. But an empire nonetheless. Territories, operations, people who would die on my command. I earned that. Through blood, through strategy, through ruthlessness. I am a power in this city, Dimitri. Salvatore understood that. He had a place in what I was building.”

”And then?” Dimitri prompted, understanding the rhythm of this conversation, letting Dante establish his position before he dismantled it.

”And then you killed him,” Dante said, his voice hardening. ”Without negotiation. Without warning. Without even acknowledging that he was more than just a problem to be solved. And you think you can just take that and move on? You think that because you’re stronger, because your organization is larger, because you have more resources, that somehow makes it acceptable to murder a man’s brother?”

”Yes,” Dimitri said simply.

The word landed like a blow.

”What?” Dante asked, leaning forward.

”I think it’s not just acceptable,” Dimitri said, his voice calm and measured. ”I think it’s exactly what should happen. Your brother was ambitious. He was moving against my territory. He was warned. He understood the stakes. He chose violence anyway. That was his choice. And when you make that choice, you accept the consequence.”

Dante’s jaw tightened.

”But here’s what you’re missing,” Dimitri continued. ”And why this conversation is going to end the way it’s going to end. You’re operating under the assumption that we’re equals. That because you’re powerful, because you have resources and men and territory, somehow that makes us comparable.”

”We are comparable,” Dante said, his voice ice-cold now.

”We’re not,” Dimitri said. ”And that’s not because you’re weak. You’re not. You’re clearly a capable operator. You’ve built something real. You command loyalty. You’re intelligent and strategic. By any measure of what makes a powerful man in this world, you qualify.”
