The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

The Ash-King remained dead.

Kael stood twenty yards from the corpse and kept watching anyway, because after everything the creature had survived, death still felt like another trick the Caldera might punish them for believing too quickly. The huge body lay collapsed partly against the fractured shelf, one wing twisted beneath it and the other spread across gray stone like burned parchment. Smoke no longer poured from the jagged vents along its spine. A few thin threads still escaped where heat trapped inside the carcass found cracks, but the rhythmic pressure was gone. So was the pale glow beneath the throat. The sunken black eye remained open, its tiny white pupil fixed and empty.

Galahad gave them five minutes, though none of them possessed enough strength to use those minutes well. Darius lowered himself onto a basalt slab with his sword across his knees and did not object when Iris tightened the temporary wrap around the cut on his thigh. His left shoulder had become nearly useless, and dried blood covered enough of his armor that Kael could no longer tell which stains belonged to which wound. Sera sat beside a cracked pillar with her unstrung bow across her lap. Her quiver was empty, her Mana Weaving exhausted, and the hand that had formed her first Construct Arrow still trembled whenever she stopped concentrating on keeping it still. Galahad stood longer than anyone else, because that was apparently how he rested, though the swelling near his temple and the stiffness in one shoulder made the lie obvious.

Theron Vance sat where they had dragged him after the last collapse, one leg extended and the other bent carefully away from his injured hip. He should not have been able to stand without help. The System had warned Kael that there was a moderate probability of fracture around the joint, and even without magical assessment, the way Vance had gone pale every time he shifted made the injury obvious. Yet he had not looked at the leg once since the Ash-King died.

He kept looking at the corpse.

More specifically, its chest.

Kael noticed because he had already noticed twice before.

The first tremor came beneath them before anyone could decide whether to acknowledge it. It rolled through the shelf slowly, deep enough to loosen ash from the overhangs and make several cracks glow faintly red where geothermal heat breathed underneath. Nobody panicked. They had been inside the Caldera too long for that. Iris looked toward the nearest wall. Galahad looked toward the retreat path. Darius looked at Kael.

The System supplied the rest.

[Geothermal instability increasing.]

[Localized pressure shifts detected beneath inner basin.]

[Structural degradation continuing.]

[Recommendation: evacuation.]

Kael dismissed the display and looked toward Galahad. ”It says we leave.”

Galahad nodded. ”That was already the plan.”

Vance spoke before anyone moved. ”Give me three minutes.”

No one answered immediately.

Theron placed one hand against the basalt beside him and tried to rise. His injured leg failed before it took his weight, forcing him back down hard enough that pain tightened his face. Instead of trying again, he turned onto one knee and began crawling toward the Ash-King.

Galahad stared at him. ”What are you doing?”

”What I should have done the moment it stopped breathing.”

”People first.”

”I know.”

”Then act like it.”

Theron looked back over one shoulder. ”Three minutes does not kill anyone.”

Darius’s answer came quietly from where he sat. ”You do not know that.”

Vance stopped.

That sentence had followed them through almost every part of the fight.

You do not know.

It had saved them from trusting cliffs that might fail, breath attacks that might repeat differently, injuries that might not matter, and plans built around something the Ash-King supposedly could not do.

Theron looked toward the corpse again.

Then he continued crawling.

Galahad swore and moved after him.

Kael stood first.

His burned calf almost gave under him, and the sudden pain under his ribs forced him to stop after the second step. He waited until his body remembered how to breathe before following.

Darius started to rise.

Kael looked back. ”No.”

Darius stared at him.

Kael pointed toward his leg, then shoulder. ”For once, I get to say it.”

Darius considered.

Then remained seated.

”That will not become a habit.”

Kael almost smiled. ”I’ll enjoy the moment.”

Sera leaned her head against the pillar. ”Both of you are unbearable.”

Galahad reached Vance before Vance reached the Ash-King.

Theron ignored the hand Galahad offered and dragged himself another yard across the ash.

”Three minutes,” Vance repeated.

”For what?”

”The core.”

The word stopped Kael.

Galahad’s expression changed too.

Not surprise that monsters possessed cores. They had spent too much time around adventurers, drakes, magical beasts, and Guild reports for the idea itself to be strange.

It was the certainty.

Vance had not said if it has one.

He had said the core.

Kael moved closer. ”You knew.”

Theron looked at him.

”Knew what?”

”That it had one.”

Vance gave him an exhausted look. ”It is the largest draconic creature in this Caldera. Of course it has a core.”

”That is not what I meant.”

Theron’s eyes stayed on Kael for another second.

Then he turned away.

That was answer enough.

Kael called the System and looked at the corpse again. Before death, the Ash-King’s mana output had been so violent and distributed through its body that separating one concentrated organ from the rest had been nearly impossible. Now that the circulation and respiratory processes had stopped, the magical noise had changed.

The System found something.

[High-density mana concentration detected.]

[Location: thoracic cavity.]

[Composition: draconic.]

[Stability: high.]

[Classification confidence: probable high-grade Draconic Core.]

Kael did not move.

There it was.

Real.

Buried somewhere inside the thing that had nearly killed all of them.

Vance saw Kael’s expression and understood.

”Your System found it.”

Kael hated how easily Theron read him.

”Yes.”

”Then we stop pretending I am wrong.”

”That was never the problem.”

Theron crawled closer to the carcass.

Galahad blocked his path with one boot.

”The problem is you cannot walk.”

”I do not need to walk to cut.”

”What do you intend to do with it?”

Vance looked up.

For one moment, nobody spoke.

The Caldera did it for them.

Stone groaned somewhere beneath the basin.

A distant crack echoed through one of the lower passages.

Sera lifted her head.

Iris stopped tending Darius’s leg.

Everyone listened.

The sound faded.

Theron looked toward Galahad again. ”If we leave a high-grade draconic core here and this shelf drops into magma, we lose something worth more than this entire expedition.”

”That is still not an answer.”

”It is an answer.”

”It is not the one I asked for.”

Theron’s mouth tightened.

Kael watched him.

Then looked toward the Ash-King.

The chest.

The man had been watching the chest before he knew Kael’s System could confirm anything.

Vance had wanted this creature dead before Kael arrived.

He had made three previous attempts.

He had known about monster-core integration work.

He had known people had been exposed, though he continued insisting unwilling exposure had not been his order.

He had known enough to recognize exactly where the Ash-King’s valuable part would be.

Pieces that had not connected while people were trapped began doing so now.

Kael felt cold that had nothing to do with Ice.

”You did not come here just to kill it.”

Theron looked at him.

Galahad did too.

Iris’s face became very still.

Vance did not deny it.

Not immediately.

That made everything worse.

Kael stepped closer. ”How long?”

Theron’s voice lost some of its exhaustion. ”How long what?”

”How long have you wanted its core?”

Silence.

Then Vance sat back against the dead creature’s forelimb and looked at everyone around him.

His people were not all here.

Rask remained at the forward hold.

Mara remained there.

Davin and Eron too.

One of the three Vanguard fighters who had entered the fourth attempt had died beneath the Ash-King’s landing and later been consumed.

Another had been recovered alive and taken back by Veyra.

Theron looked toward the empty place where the dead man should have been.

When he finally answered, there was no villainous pride in his voice.

”Before the first attempt.”

Galahad’s hand moved toward his weapon.

Kael’s did not.

He had no sword anymore.

That fact suddenly mattered more.

”You knew from the beginning.”

”I suspected.”

”You spent people on a suspicion?”

Theron’s eyes snapped toward him. ”Do not.”

Kael stopped.

Something dangerous entered Vance’s expression.

Not power.

Grief.

”You do not get to make them into something I spent.”

”Then tell me what they were.”

”My people.”

The answer came hard enough to silence the shelf.

Vance breathed once, then looked toward the Ash-King’s corpse again. ”Men and women who came here because the Vanguard needed something no House could revoke, no governor could regulate, no king could declare illegal after deciding we had become inconvenient.”

Galahad stared at him. ”Power.”

”Yes.”

”You killed people for power.”

Theron’s jaw flexed. ”We came here knowing what we were hunting.”

”The ones in your experiments?”

Vance looked toward Galahad.

”That is different.”

”Is it?”

”Yes.”

Kael stepped closer. ”Tovin did not volunteer for what happened to him.”

”I know.”

”Lysa?”

”I know.”

”Then someone under you was using people without consent while your organization researched monster-core integration.”

Theron’s eyes hardened. ”And I told you I did not order that.”

”You also built the reason someone thought the work mattered.”

That landed.

Vance did not answer.

Kael continued because now that the words had come, he understood what he had been trying to say since the lower tunnels.

”You wanted a way to put monster power into people.”

”Yes.”

”You wanted this core.”

”Yes.”

”You created the work, the funding, the expectation that the result mattered. Maybe you did not tell someone to use unwilling people, but you built a place where someone decided getting an answer mattered more than asking permission.”

Theron looked at him for a long time.

Then he nodded.

Once.

”That part is mine.”

No excuse.

No attempt to make it clean.

Kael almost hated that more.

Galahad folded his arms. ”And now?”

Vance looked at the dead Ash-King.

”Now we finish what I came here to do.”

Darius spoke from behind them.

”No.”

Everyone turned.

Darius had risen after all.

Of course he had.

One hand held his sword.

His injured leg remained slightly bent, and his useless shoulder hung lower, but the calm on his face had returned in a way Kael recognized immediately.

Commander.

Not wounded man.

Theron stared at him.

”You do not own that core.”

”Neither do you.”

”I killed that creature.”

Darius’s expression did not change.

”No. We did.”

Vance looked around.

At Sera.

Iris.

Galahad.

Kael.

Then back toward Darius.

”That changes nothing.”

”It changes everything.”

Theron gave a humorless laugh. ”That sounds like something a man standing beside a prince would say.”

Darius’s eyes narrowed.

Kael saw the turn before the words arrived.

Vance looked toward him now.

”Do you know what the difference is between your House and mine?”

Kael answered carefully. ”You are going to tell me.”

”You can build something, call it law, and force everyone to respect it because your father sits on a throne. I build something and every governor, noble, Guild, Church, mercenary lord, or Imperial officer gets to decide whether they recognize it.”

Galahad said, ”That is not entirely false.”

Kael looked toward him.

Galahad shrugged carefully. ”He can be right about a problem and still be wrong about the answer.”

Theron almost smiled. ”Exactly.”

Kael looked back toward Vance. ”Your answer is eating monsters?”

The silence lasted half a second.

Sera coughed into her hand.

Iris looked away.

Even Galahad’s mouth moved.

Theron stared at Kael.

”That sounded better in your head.”

”No.”

For the first time since the Ash-King died, something almost normal passed through the group.

Then Vance’s face hardened again.

”My answer is strength nobody can take because they changed the law.”

Kael understood.

There.

The center of it.

Not money.

Not simple ambition.

Independence turned into hunger.

Theron hated systems that decided who possessed authority, who could build, who could command, who could keep weapons, who could exist outside noble or Imperial structures.

So he had chosen a power that belonged only to the body strong enough to hold it.

Kael looked at the dead monster.

”And what happens when the strength starts deciding for everyone else?”

Theron’s eyes moved back to him.

Kael continued. ”You hated people controlling you. Then you built experiments around putting monster cores into people. Your lower teams used unwilling subjects. You tell yourself that part was not your order. Fine. But what happens when you get enough power that nobody can tell you no?”

Theron’s voice lowered. ”Then nobody gets to put my people on their knees again.”

”That was not the question.”

”I know.”

That was worse than a denial.

The mountain shifted again.

Harder.

A crack opened twenty yards away.

Red light shone briefly through the gap before ash slid over it.

Galahad looked toward the retreat route. ”Conversation ends. We leave.”

Theron turned toward the Ash-King.

”No.”

Galahad’s patience broke. ”Vance.”

”I need two minutes.”

”You have had your answer.”

Theron put both hands against the ground.

Then he stood.

Everyone froze.

His injured hip should not have allowed it.

For one heartbeat Kael thought the System had been wrong.

Then he saw the way Vance’s entire body shook.

Theron had simply forced the leg to take weight.

Pain turned his face gray.

He nearly fell.

He stayed up.

Not healed.

Will.

Darius raised his sword.

”Sit.”

Vance looked at him.

”No.”

Darius took one step forward.

Theron looked at the sword.

Then at Kael.

Then toward the corpse.

The distance was eight yards.

Too far for his damaged hip.

Everyone knew.

Theron moved anyway.

The first step was a limp.

The second almost became a fall.

The third was faster.

Adrenaline.

Desperation.

Galahad reached for him.

Vance drove one elbow backward.

The strike caught Galahad in the ribs.

Not enough to injure badly.

Enough to break the grip.

Iris moved.

Theron shoved her away with his forearm.

She did not fight him head-on.

She caught his wrist, turned with it, and tried to use his bad hip against him.

Vance collapsed.

Exactly as Iris intended.

Then kept moving from the ground.

He crawled.

Kael reached him.

”Theron.”

Vance grabbed Kael’s ankle and pulled.

Kael’s burned leg failed.

He hit the ground.

Pain ripped through his calf.

Theron dragged himself another yard.

Darius came around Kael.

Too slow.

Injured leg.

Sera picked up a broken piece of basalt.

Apparently rocks were becoming a tradition.

She threw it.

The stone struck Vance’s shoulder.

He barely noticed.

Galahad swore. ”Stop him!”

Theron reached the Ash-King.

His hands found the wound beneath the chest where cracked scales had separated during the final pressure collapse.

Kael pushed himself up.

Vance drove both hands into the opening.

Not blindly.

He knew where to reach.

That scared Kael more than anything else.

The Ash-King’s hide had already split along the sternum. Theron hooked his fingers beneath a loosened scale and pulled.

Nothing.

He changed angle.

Used his good leg against the corpse for leverage.

The scale tore farther.

Black blood, cooling now, ran over his hands.

Kael reached him.

Theron kicked backward.

The heel caught Kael’s burned calf.

Kael dropped again.

Darius arrived.

His sword point stopped at Vance’s neck.

”Enough.”

Theron froze.

Both hands remained inside the Ash-King’s chest cavity.

Darius breathed hard.

The blade did not tremble.

”Remove your hands.”

Vance looked up.

”You would kill me now?”

”Yes.”

No hesitation.

Theron studied him.

Then something in his expression changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

He believed Darius.

Good.

Vance slowly removed one hand.

Then the other.

Something came with them.

Kael saw it.

A black-red mass the size of a large fist, wrapped in strands of dark tissue and shining beneath the blood coating its surface.

Not a gemstone.

Not exactly.

The core had a crystalline outer shell, but something inside it pulsed with dull ember light even after the creature that created it had died.

The System reacted immediately.

[High-Grade Draconic Core confirmed.]

[Residual attribute signature: dominance / heat / draconic mana.]

[Biological integration risk: extreme.]

[Compatibility with human physiology: unknown.]

[Consumption strongly discouraged.]

Kael’s stomach dropped.

”Darius.”

Darius saw Vance’s eyes.

Saw the core.

The sword moved.

Theron bit down.

Not on the whole core.

On the cracked edge.

The shell broke between his teeth with a sound like thin stone snapping.

Black-red liquid burst across his mouth.

Darius struck.

Theron jerked sideways.

The sword cut across his cheek instead of his throat.

Vance swallowed.

Kael lunged.

Theron shoved the remainder of the core into his mouth with both hands.

No elegance.

No ritual.

He bit through the fractured shell again.

Blood and luminous fluid ran down his chin.

Sera stared.

”What is he doing?”

Galahad answered before Kael could.

”Something stupid.”

Vance swallowed again.

Then screamed.

The sound had nothing human left in it by the end.

Theron’s back arched.

Both hands clawed against the stone.

The last piece of the core fell from his fingers.

Kael reached for it.

Too late.

Vance grabbed it, crushed the weakened shell against his own palm, and shoved the fragments into his mouth.

Darius struck with the flat this time, aiming to knock him unconscious.

The sword hit Theron’s shoulder.

Aura exploded.

Vance should have fallen.

He did not.

Darius’s eyes widened.

Theron caught the blade.

Bare hand.

Metal cut his palm.

Blood ran.

Then stopped.

Not healed.

Stopped.

The flesh around the wound tightened unnaturally.

Kael’s System opened.

[Foreign draconic mana integration detected.]

[Host: Theron Vance.]

[Integration stability: critically low.]

[Physiological incompatibility: severe.]

[Musculoskeletal stress: escalating.]

[Circulatory overload: escalating.]

[Warning: host vessel failure probable.]

Theron stood.

The injured hip did not matter anymore.

Not because it had healed.

Kael could see the swelling.

See the misalignment.

Draconic power simply forced the body to move through the injury.

That was worse.

Vance looked at his own hands.

Dark veins had appeared beneath the skin of his forearms, branching upward like cracks filled with ember light. His breathing came too fast. Each inhale sounded wet.

Then he smiled.

Not triumphantly.

In disbelief.

”It worked.”

Kael stared at him.

”No.”

Theron looked up.

Kael pointed toward the dark lines crawling above his collar.

”It is killing you.”

Vance’s smile remained.

”Everything does eventually.”

”That is your answer?”

”No.”

Theron looked toward the Ash-King.

Then toward the Caldera beyond it.

His black pupils had narrowed.

Not white like the Ash-King.

Still human.

For now.

”My answer is that it worked.”

A roar answered from somewhere deep below.

Everyone froze.

Not the Ash-King.

Smaller.

A drake.

Then another answered from farther west.

Then a third.

Iris turned toward the nearest tunnel.

”What?”

The distant cries multiplied.

Normal drakes.

Some close.

Some deep.

All suddenly calling at once.

Vance’s expression changed.

He heard more than sound.

Kael saw it.

Theron slowly turned his head toward the tunnel.

One of the lower passages filled with scraping claws.

Galahad raised his weapon.

Darius moved beside him.

Kael had no sword.

Sera had no string.

Iris had one knife.

Theron stood between them and the dead Ash-King, trembling from power that was visibly destroying him.

The first drake emerged.

Smaller than the Ash-King by an enormous margin.

Still large enough to kill an injured person in a single bite.

It crawled onto the shelf.

Its nostrils flared.

Its eyes found Vance.

The drake stopped.

Everyone waited.

The creature lowered its head.

Not fear.

Submission.

Kael felt the System react.

[External draconic behavior shift detected.]

[Possible dominance response.]

[Source correlation: Theron Vance / assimilated Draconic Core.]

Theron stared at the drake.

The drake remained lowered.

Another emerged behind it.

Then another.

The second fought the posture briefly, clawing at the ground as though some instinct inside it resisted.

Theron looked at it.

The creature dropped.

Sera’s voice was quiet.

”No.”

Theron raised one blood-covered hand.

The first drake turned toward Kael.

Kael felt every remaining piece of the fight click into place.

The Ash-King’s core had carried more than mana.

Dominance.

Territorial authority.

The instinct that made lesser drakes avoid its ground.

Theron had not merely consumed strength.

He had taken command.

Vance looked at Kael.

His body shook harder.

One dark vein along his throat split the skin.

A thin line of blood appeared.

He ignored it.

”You asked what happens when nobody can tell me no.”

Kael stared back.

Theron’s expression was almost sad.

”Now we find out.”

The first drake moved.

Darius stepped in front of Kael.

One arm.

One injured leg.

Still between the threat and his prince.

Kael looked toward him.

Darius did not look back.

”Stay behind me.”

Kael almost laughed.

”Absolutely not.”

Galahad moved to Darius’s right.

Iris to the left.

Sera picked up another broken piece of stone because apparently the Caldera had reduced every combat system eventually to geology.

Theron raised his hand.

Three drakes spread around him.

The dead Ash-King lay behind them.

The mountain trembled again.

This time the fissure near the corpse widened enough for red light to remain visible.

Somewhere below, more drakes answered the command they did not understand.

The Ash-King was dead.

The thing that followed it was human.

That might have been worse.
