Chapter 309: The Path Above the Road · Nov 04, 2026
Chapter List (352)
The forest above the service road had no interest in making their escape easy.
The first hundred paces climbed sharply enough that the litter teams had to shorten their steps and reset grips every few breaths. Roots crossed the slope in thick knots, loose stone rolled under boots, and the ground narrowed in places where the mountain had broken away years ago and never settled properly again. Below them, the old road disappeared between the trees, but Kael could still see the scorched retaining wall through gaps in the branches and, farther east, the black mark Rask had recognized as an abandonment warning.
No one wanted to go back down there.
That did not mean the route above was better.
Iris led with one hand occasionally touching trunks or exposed stone as she searched for signs of the field team that had left the road. The tracks were harder here. Leaf litter had caught some prints, but roots and rock held almost nothing. Every few minutes she stopped, crouched, and made the entire group wait while she studied something Kael could barely see.
Galahad did not rush her.
That mattered.
Behind them, the sounds from the road had changed.
At first there had been nothing.
Then a distant drake call rolled through the trees.
Another answered.
Milo stopped walking.
”That sounded like more than four.”
Sera glanced down the slope.
”We already knew there were more than four.”
”I preferred knowing it as a number.”
Darius adjusted his grip on the side of Tovin’s litter while Mara and another worker handled the rear.
”Keep moving.”
Milo looked toward him.
”I am moving.”
”You stopped.”
”I was emotionally moving.”
Darius stared at him.
Milo resumed walking.
Kael smiled despite the ache in his ribs.
It was becoming easier to understand why Milo irritated people so quickly.
It was also becoming easier to understand why nobody actually wanted him gone.
Sera walked a few paces ahead of him now, bow in hand, her quiver resting high against her back. Kael had already caught her touching it twice since they left the road.
Not counting every few breaths.
Better than before.
Still counting.
Fourteen usable arrows.
One cracked.
One ruined arrow she refused to discard.
Kael had not asked why.
He was beginning to understand that asking at the wrong time could turn a truth into a wall.
The slope forced them into single file.
Kel walked with one arm around Rask’s shoulders, grumbling every time Rask adjusted him.
”You are dragging me.”
”You are limping.”
”I can limp without help.”
”You fell off a road.”
”I remember.”
”Then act like it.”
Kel gave him a disgusted look.
”You’ve become unbearable.”
Rask did not look at him.
”You were easier when you were unconscious.”
”I was never unconscious.”
”You were halfway there.”
Mara called from behind Tovin’s litter.
”He was whining the whole way up.”
Kel twisted around.
”That was pain.”
”That was whining.”
Derren laughed from his own litter.
The sound turned into a cough, but he still smiled afterward.
For a few moments, the expedition climbed under something close to ordinary conversation.
Then Iris raised a fist.
Everyone stopped.
Kael’s hand went to his sword.
Sera’s bow came up.
Darius turned his head, listening.
Iris crouched near a patch of dark soil between two roots.
Galahad approached first.
”What?”
She pointed.
Kael moved closer.
At first he saw nothing except crushed leaves.
Then Iris brushed them aside.
A bootprint.
Deep.
Fresh.
Another print lay farther uphill.
Then another.
Galahad looked toward her.
”The field team?”
”Likely.”
Rask studied the tread.
”One of ours.”
”You recognize the boot?”
”The issue pattern.”
That did not mean every person ahead belonged to his exact team.
But it made the connection stronger.
Iris moved several paces left.
”There are more.”
Kael followed her gaze.
The scattered bootprints that had fled the road had converged again.
Not neatly.
Not calmly.
But they had chosen this same slope.
Rask exhaled.
”Good.”
Kel looked at him.
”Could still be dead.”
Rask stared.
Mara snapped, ”Do you work at being unpleasant?”
Kel shrugged.
”I like expectations low.”
Rask smacked the back of his head.
Kel winced and immediately clutched his ribs.
”That hurt.”
”Good.”
”Cruel.”
”Alive enough to complain.”
Kael heard Harven’s bridge exchange in that.
Old habits.
Old people.
Old ways of keeping fear from showing too clearly.
Galahad pointed ahead.
”We follow. Iris leads. No one assumes they’re friendly just because Rask recognizes the boots.”
Rask nodded.
”No argument.”
They moved again.
The tracks helped.
So did the fact that whoever had climbed before them had done it fast enough to break branches and kick loose stone. The route curved north, away from the service road, then flattened briefly beneath a line of old pines.
That was where they found the first blood.
Sera saw it before Iris.
She stopped beside a trunk.
A dark smear marked the bark at shoulder height.
Fresh enough to shine.
Iris checked the ground.
”Someone leaned here.”
Rask stepped closer.
”How bad?”
Iris studied the blood trail.
”Not enough here to tell.”
Kael focused.
The System responded.
[Evidence Analysis]
Blood source: human
Estimated age: recent
Volume at visible site: low
Movement continuation detected uphill
”Human.”
Rask looked toward him.
”You can tell that?”
”The System can.”
He did not add certainty the System had not given him.
”Not enough blood here to say how badly they’re hurt.”
Kel looked ahead.
”Then they kept moving.”
Iris nodded.
”Yes.”
That mattered.
The group continued.
Tovin remained stable.
Critical.
But stable.
Kael checked twice during the climb and resisted the urge to do more. The System still showed foreign residue active within him, but the violent spike from earlier had eased. Galahad had been right to keep the heavy magic farther from the litter.
Milo hated the arrangement.
Kael could tell.
Not because he complained.
Because he did not.
He kept himself on the outside of the moving group, farther from Tovin than before, where his Wind or Force would have less chance of affecting whatever unstable process had taken hold inside the injured adventurer.
Sera drifted near him.
Not close enough to make it obvious.
Close enough that if he stumbled, she could catch him.
Milo noticed.
”You know I can walk.”
”You nearly fell twice.”
”Those were tactical corrections.”
”You tripped on a root.”
”The root was aggressive.”
Sera looked at him.
”The root will be relieved to hear you survived.”
Milo nodded.
”I hold no grudge.”
Kael almost laughed.
Then the forest changed again.
Not quieter this time.
Louder.
The first sound came from below.
Branches breaking.
Heavy movement.
Not one creature.
Several.
Everyone froze.
Iris immediately moved to the edge of the slope and looked down through the trees.
Kael followed.
The service road was barely visible.
Movement crossed it.
Fast.
Dark bodies.
Drakes.
Three.
Then another.
None turned uphill.
They were running east.
Kael’s System flashed.
[Multiple draconic signatures detected]
Movement pattern: rapid displacement
Aggression toward expedition: not currently indicated
Direction: east / east-northeast
Mara whispered, ”They’re all leaving.”
Darius watched the road below.
”Leaving what?”
No one had an answer.
Kael looked south-southwest.
The mountain hid most of the Caldera from here, but the air above the trees carried a faint gray haze that had not been there earlier.
Not smoke exactly.
Ash.
Maybe steam.
Hard to tell.
The System expanded.
[Regional Environmental Analysis]
Geothermal activity: elevated
Subsurface pressure anomalies: increasing
Surface wildlife displacement: widespread
Draconic movement probability: high
Cause of current displacement: unresolved
Galahad looked toward Kael.
”What do you have?”
Kael told him.
No embellishment.
No certainty where there was none.
Rask stared down the slope.
”My people may be caught between them.”
”Or ahead of them,” Iris replied.
Kel looked toward her.
”That better?”
”No.”
Good.
No false comfort.
Galahad pointed uphill.
”We keep following the human trail.”
Everyone moved faster after that.
Not running.
They could not.
Tovin would not survive it.
Neither would Derren’s ribs enjoy the attempt.
But the pace increased enough that the litter carriers stopped talking entirely.
The slope rose again.
Kael’s legs burned.
His shoulder hurt from the earlier impact.
Every inhale pulled at the bruised side of his ribs.
Darius looked worse.
He hid it well.
Kael did not.
The old scrape on his armor had widened into a torn section near the shoulder where the healthy drake had hit him. Blood had dried beneath the edge of the plate.
Kael noticed him flex his hand around the sword hilt.
Once.
Then again.
”You’re hurt.”
Darius looked at him.
”So are you.”
”That wasn’t an answer.”
”You have learned bad habits.”
”From Milo?”
”From yourself.”
Milo called from behind them.
”I accept partial credit.”
Darius ignored him.
Kael glanced at the damaged armor.
”Let the healer look.”
”After we stop.”
”When is that?”
”When Galahad stops us.”
Kael looked toward Galahad.
The Guild leader was climbing ahead with one hand pressed occasionally against the hip that had taken the drake’s shoulder.
Nobody was in good condition.
That was the problem.
They had started this expedition strong enough to handle an A-rank mission.
Now strength was being measured in what they had left.
Kael understood Darius’s lesson from the Knight Examination better here than he had in the training yard.
Preserve decisions.
Not strength.
Decisions.
Every unnecessary technique, every reckless charge, every wasted arrow or spell narrowed what remained available later.
Sera touched her quiver.
Fourteen.
Kael looked away.
A branch snapped ahead.
Iris vanished.
Not literally.
One moment she stood on the trail.
The next she slipped behind a trunk and lowered herself into the brush.
Galahad drew his sword.
Everyone behind him stopped.
Sera immediately moved to a clear line between two trees.
Darius shifted toward the front.
Milo remained farther from Tovin, both hands loose at his sides.
Rask lowered Kel against a tree.
”Stay.”
Kel glared.
”I can fight.”
”You can breathe.”
”Barely.”
”Then focus on that.”
Rask drew his weapon.
Kael’s System scanned.
[Humanoid signatures ahead]
Count: 6–9 probable
Movement: low
Immediate hostile intent: unresolved
Kael whispered to Galahad.
”People.”
”How many?”
”Six to nine.”
Rask stepped closer.
”Could be mine.”
Galahad looked at him.
”Could.”
Again.
Rask did not argue.
Then Iris’s voice came from ahead.
”Galahad.”
Not alarmed.
Not relaxed.
He moved forward with Kael, Darius, and Rask.
The trees opened into a narrow shelf of flatter ground.
Seven people occupied it.
Two sat against rocks.
One lay on the ground.
Three stood with weapons drawn.
The seventh held a blood-soaked cloth against his upper arm.
Iron insignia showed on four.
Not all.
The others wore work clothes.
One of the armed men raised his sword the moment Kael appeared.
Rask stepped past Galahad.
”Davin.”
The sword lowered.
The man stared.
”Rask?”
Relief hit his face hard enough to make him look younger.
Then he saw the group behind Rask.
The relief vanished.
”Who are they?”
”Alive.”
Davin stared.
Milo, somewhere farther back, muttered, ”Promising introduction.”
Galahad stepped forward.
”Adventure Guild.”
Davin’s expression tightened.
His eyes moved to Kael.
Then Darius.
Recognition.
Not personal.
Titles.
House.
That was enough to make him wary.
Rask looked toward the wounded on the shelf.
”Where’s the rest?”
Davin did not answer immediately.
Rask’s face changed.
”Where are they?”
”East.”
”Why?”
”The road broke.”
Rask frowned.
”It didn’t break when we came through.”
”Not the bridge. The route.”
Davin pointed back toward the south.
”Drakes started coming up from the lower cuts. First two. Then six. Maybe more. They weren’t hunting us at first.”
Kael exchanged a look with Galahad.
Same observation.
Davin continued.
”Then something hit them from behind.”
Rask went still.
”What?”
”I don’t know.”
”Man?”
”No.”
”Drake?”
Davin swallowed.
”No.”
That answer changed the air.
Galahad stepped closer.
”What did you see?”
”Heat.”
Milo had moved up enough to hear.
”That describes half this mountain.”
Davin looked toward him.
”A line.”
Milo stopped joking.
Davin pointed between the trees.
”Came through the woods behind them. Straight through trees. Hit one drake. Burned half its side black.”
Kael remembered the burns Iris had found on the drake they killed.
Pattern inconsistent with self-produced breath.
Iris looked at him.
She remembered too.
Rask asked, ”What made the line?”
”I didn’t see.”
”Then how do you know it wasn’t a drake?”
”Because drakes breathe fire.”
Davin’s hand tightened around his sword.
”This wasn’t breath.”
Kael’s System could not help.
No evidence here.
Only testimony.
Galahad did not push the conclusion.
”What happened after?”
”Everything ran.”
”Your people?”
”Us too.”
Davin looked toward the wounded man on the ground.
”We lost formation on the road. Some went east. We came up here.”
”How many east?”
Davin counted silently.
”Eight.”
Rask frowned.
”Eight plus seven.”
”Fifteen.”
The number matched Iris’s earlier estimate.
Good.
A full field team, likely.
Not confirmed until now.
Rask looked at the wounded.
”Deaths?”
Davin’s face tightened.
”None when we split.”
”That you saw.”
”Yes.”
Rask exhaled.
Good.
Not victory.
Better than bodies.
Galahad crouched near the man lying on the ground.
The Guild healer reached them a moment later and immediately took over.
”What happened?”
Davin answered.
”Fell climbing.”
The healer checked the man’s ankle.
”Probably broken.”
The man opened one eye.
”It is.”
”How do you know?”
”I heard it.”
She nodded.
”Useful.”
Milo smiled.
”I like her.”
The healer did not look at him.
”No.”
Kael watched Davin.
The man had not stopped looking toward the path east.
”You want to go after them.”
Davin met his eyes.
”My brother went east.”
Rask turned.
”Who?”
”Eron.”
Another new name.
Kael stored it carefully.
Not similar to anyone he knew.
Davin looked back toward Rask.
”He was with the front eight.”
Rask swore under his breath.
Galahad’s expression did not change.
”We are not charging east blind.”
Davin’s jaw tightened.
”My brother is out there.”
”And I have two litter-bound critical wounded, one limited-mobility survivor, several injured people, exhausted fighters, and multiple drakes moving through the same route.”
”You want me to sit here?”
”I want you alive enough to find him.”
Davin looked ready to argue.
Rask stepped between them.
”He’s right.”
Davin stared at him.
”You don’t know where Eron is.”
”No.”
”He could be dying.”
”Yes.”
”Then move.”
Rask did not.
That surprised Davin.
Maybe it surprised Rask too.
Rask looked toward Tovin’s litter as it emerged onto the shelf.
Then Derren.
Then Lysa.
Then Kel leaning against a tree, one hand pressed to his ribs.
Rask’s face hardened.
”I spent the last hour learning what happens when we run at every person we think needs saving.”
Kel lifted a hand.
”You learn slowly.”
Rask turned.
”Not now.”
Kel lowered it.
Davin’s anger remained.
Rask continued.
”We find where they went. We follow if we can. But we don’t lose thirty people for eight.”
Galahad looked at him.
No praise.
Did not need it.
Davin looked down.
His knuckles stayed white around his sword.
Kael understood him.
That was the dangerous part.
If Cassian were somewhere ahead and someone told Kael to wait, would he listen?
He did not know.
That uncertainty made it easier not to judge Davin.
The healer finished checking the man with the broken ankle.
”He needs a splint before he moves.”
Galahad looked around the shelf.
”How long?”
”Ten minutes.”
”Five.”
”Eight.”
Galahad stared.
The healer stared back.
”Eight.”
Milo whispered to Sera, ”She outranks him.”
Sera almost smiled.
Galahad heard.
”Seven.”
The healer nodded.
”Done.”
That settled it.
Everyone used the pause.
Water passed around.
Bandages changed.
Darius finally allowed the second healer to inspect his shoulder.
Kael watched from nearby.
The plate came loose with difficulty.
The claw had not cut deep.
Mostly bruising and a shallow torn line beneath the armor.
The healer cleaned it.
Darius’s face did not change.
Kael knew that meant it hurt.
”You can grimace.”
Darius looked at him.
”No.”
”That sounded unhealthy.”
”You are learning from Milo.”
Milo, sitting against a tree ten paces away, lifted a hand.
”Again, partial credit.”
Sera tossed him a waterskin.
He caught it badly.
Almost dropped it.
Sera stared.
Milo looked at his injured hand.
”That was intentional.”
”No.”
”No.”
Sera sat across from him.
For a few breaths, neither spoke.
Then she removed the cracked arrow.
Not the ruined one.
The cracked one.
Kael noticed because Milo did.
Sera rolled the shaft between her fingers.
A thin split ran down one side near the fletching.
She inspected it.
Milo drank.
”You’re going to repair that?”
”Yes.”
”With what?”
Sera looked toward the workers.
”Glue.”
Mara heard.
”Not here.”
Sera frowned.
”Resin?”
”Wrong kind.”
Sera looked back at the arrow.
Milo leaned his head against the tree.
”How many good?”
”Fourteen.”
Kael almost corrected her.
The cracked arrow had not been counted.
She knew.
Milo knew.
That was why he asked.
”Still fourteen.”
”Yes.”
Sera’s fingers tightened around the damaged shaft.
Milo watched.
”Was there ever a number that felt like enough?”
Sera looked at him.
Kael immediately focused on his own waterskin.
Not listening.
Absolutely listening.
Sera’s expression closed.
”Yes.”
Milo waited.
She did not continue.
He nodded.
”All right.”
Again.
No pushing.
Sera looked irritated by it.
”You keep doing that.”
”What?”
”Stopping.”
”When you stop.”
”That doesn’t bother you?”
”Of course it bothers me.”
She stared.
Milo smiled faintly.
”I am curious. Not suicidal.”
Sera looked down.
For a moment Kael thought the conversation was over.
Then she spoke.
”Thirty-six.”
Milo’s smile faded.
”What?”
”Thirty-six felt like enough.”
Sera rolled the cracked arrow once more.
”I used to carry thirty-six.”
Milo glanced at the quiver.
”That’s heavy.”
”It was.”
”Why thirty-six?”
Sera went still.
Too far.
Kael felt it before Milo answered.
Milo saw it too.
He lifted the waterskin.
”Never mind.”
Sera’s eyes narrowed.
”You asked.”
”Yes.”
”You want to know.”
”Yes.”
”You’re irritating.”
”Yes.”
That almost got a smile.
Almost.
Sera looked toward the trees.
”My first captain said twelve arrows was enough for any competent archer.”
Milo waited.
Sera continued.
”I hated him.”
”Good start.”
”He was right.”
Milo’s brows lifted.
Sera looked at the cracked shaft.
”Twelve clean shots should solve most fights.”
”And?”
”And fights don’t care what should happen.”
There.
A little more.
Not the whole truth.
Enough.
Sera slid the cracked arrow back into its separate place.
”After a while, I carried three times that.”
Milo did not ask why.
Kael saw Sera look at him.
Waiting.
When the question did not come, she looked away.
That mattered more than the answer would have.
Iris returned before the seven minutes ended.
Galahad stood immediately.
”Route?”
”Found the east group’s tracks.”
Davin got up.
”Where?”
”North-east first. Then down.”
”Toward the road?”
”No.”
Iris looked at Rask.
”They avoided it.”
Good.
Smart.
Galahad asked, ”Blood?”
”Some.”
Davin’s face tightened.
”How much?”
”Not enough to call fatal.”
”Who?”
”I don’t know.”
Honest.
Davin hated the answer but accepted it.
Iris continued.
”Tracks remain grouped. Eight people. One begins dragging the left foot about three hundred paces ahead.”
Rask looked toward Davin.
”Eron injured before?”
”No.”
Could be anyone.
Galahad looked toward Tovin’s litter.
Then the newly broken ankle.
More wounded.
Every person they found made extraction harder.
That did not mean they stopped finding them.
Kael could see the calculation moving behind Galahad’s eyes.
Route.
People.
Threats.
Time.
Capacity.
Finally:
”We follow.”
Davin exhaled.
Galahad raised a hand before relief could become impatience.
”At our pace.”
Davin’s jaw tightened.
”At our pace,” Galahad repeated, ”or you go alone and probably create another rescue problem.”
Milo whispered, ”Strong argument.”
Davin looked toward him.
”Do you ever stop?”
”No.”
Sera answered for him.
”Unfortunately.”
Milo put a hand over his heart.
”After all we’ve survived.”
The man with the broken ankle was splinted.
No third litter.
They could not afford one.
Instead, two workers built a shoulder support using a cut branch and cloth, allowing him to hop with partial weight while one person supported each side.
Messy.
Slow.
Functional.
Kael liked functional.
The enlarged group moved again.
Now they had seven more people.
That meant more eyes.
More hands.
More wounded.
More mouths.
More people to protect.
The path narrowed north-east.
Iris followed the eight-person trail.
Kael kept checking the System for heat signatures.
Nothing immediate.
That made him more nervous than if it had shown one.
The forest held too much movement now.
Drakes below.
Humans ahead.
Something burning drakes from behind.
Geothermal pressure rising.
No single threat explained the others cleanly.
Good.
That meant they still did not understand enough.
Bad.
That meant they were walking through the consequences anyway.
They traveled for nearly half an hour before finding the first sign the east group had stopped.
A torn strip of cloth hung from a branch.
Rask recognized it.
”Field wrap.”
Davin touched it.
”Eron uses blue.”
The cloth was gray.
Not useful.
Iris crouched.
”Tracks slow here.”
Kael scanned.
[Evidence Analysis]
Eight human movement traces
Pause duration: estimated several minutes
Blood traces: increased
One subject likely assisted by another
Galahad looked toward Iris.
”Then?”
She pointed downhill.
”They moved.”
Davin frowned.
”Why stop?”
Sera looked up.
”Maybe they heard something.”
Everyone followed her gaze.
The trees ahead had been damaged.
Not much.
Two trunks.
One branch.
Heat-blackened.
Kael’s stomach tightened.
Iris moved closer.
The burn pattern was narrow.
Too narrow for a broad drake breath.
A line.
Davin saw it.
”That.”
Galahad looked toward him.
”That’s what hit the drake?”
”Yes.”
Milo stood.
Fatigue disappeared from his expression for a moment.
He approached the nearest trunk without touching it.
”Clean.”
Kael looked at him.
”What?”
Milo pointed.
”The burn doesn’t spread much.”
He studied the wood.
”Heat concentrated along one path.”
Sera joined him.
”A spell?”
Milo’s eyes narrowed.
”Could be.”
”Fire?”
”No.”
That got Kael’s attention.
Milo crouched.
”Fire spreads unless controlled.”
He pointed to the blackened cut across the trunk.
”This looks like something passed through and kept going.”
Kael focused.
System.
[Residual Mana Analysis]
Thermal damage: high concentration
Residual magical signature: present
Affinity classification: unresolved
Pattern coherence: unusually narrow
Source identity: unknown
Kael felt a small chill unrelated to Ice.
”Magic.”
Darius came beside him.
”Whose?”
”No idea.”
Good.
No false answer.
Rask looked toward Davin.
”You saw this strike a drake?”
”Yes.”
”And you saw no caster?”
”No.”
Darius studied the line.
”How far did it travel?”
Iris walked along it.
One tree.
Second.
A rock farther ahead had a melted groove across its surface.
Milo whistled.
”That is not beginner work.”
Sera glanced toward him.
”You can tell?”
”Yes.”
”How?”
”Because beginners miss.”
Kael looked at him.
”That’s your analysis?”
Milo pointed toward the trees.
”Straight path through uneven terrain. Enough heat to char hardwood and score stone. Minimal spread. Whoever did it either had excellent control or enough power that control stopped mattering.”
Darius shook his head.
”Power without control would have widened the damage.”
Milo looked at him.
”Then excellent control.”
That was more concerning.
Galahad looked toward the trail.
”Does it intersect the eight?”
Iris checked.
”Yes.”
Davin’s hand went to his sword.
”How close?”
”Very.”
Rask swore.
Galahad raised a hand.
”Still no assumptions.”
Davin stared at the burn line.
”My brother is ahead.”
”We know.”
The trail moved faster now.
So did they.
Five minutes later, Kael heard voices.
Not shouting.
Arguing.
Human.
Iris raised her fist.
Everyone stopped.
Davin tried to move past her.
Rask caught him.
”Wait.”
”That’s Eron.”
”You can hear him?”
”Yes.”
Rask listened.
One voice carried through the trees.
Angry.
Another answered.
Kael could not make out words.
Davin could.
”That’s him.”
Galahad nodded to Iris.
She disappeared ahead.
Sera moved to a flanking angle.
Milo remained farther from Tovin.
Kael joined Darius and Galahad.
The System scanned.
[Humanoid signatures ahead]
Count: 9
Nine.
Not eight.
Kael whispered.
”Nine.”
Rask looked at him.
”There were eight.”
”Yes.”
Davin’s face changed.
”Who’s the ninth?”
”No idea.”
Exactly.
They advanced.
The trees opened.
The eight missing field-team members stood in a rough semicircle around one person.
One man sat on the ground holding his leg.
Another had blood down the side of his face.
A third supported him.
Davin found his brother instantly.
”Eron.”
The man near the center turned.
He had Davin’s eyes.
Not the same face.
Close enough to see family.
”Davin?”
Relief hit both of them.
Neither moved.
Because the ninth person stood between them.
A woman.
Kael stopped.
She wore no Iron Vanguard insignia.
No Guild badge.
No noble crest.
Dark travel clothes.
A short cloak burned along one edge.
Her right hand was empty.
Her left held a narrow metal rod perhaps the length of Kael’s forearm.
Not a wand.
Not exactly.
Something built for channeling.
She looked exhausted.
Blood ran from one nostril.
The ground near her boots had been scorched in a thin line.
Kael’s System reacted.
[Unknown Humanoid]
Mana activity: elevated
Current hostility: unresolved
Visible injuries: minor
Affinity: analysis unavailable
She looked at Kael.
Then Darius.
Then Galahad.
Then Rask.
Her eyes settled on the litters behind them.
”Took you long enough.”
No one moved.
Galahad kept his sword lowered but ready.
”Who are you?”
The woman looked toward the eight Iron Vanguard members.
”Someone who stopped them from becoming drake food.”
Eron stepped forward.
”She did.”
Davin looked toward his brother.
”You know her?”
”No.”
That did not help.
The woman wiped blood from beneath her nose.
”Can introductions wait?”
Galahad’s eyes narrowed.
”Why?”
She pointed south.
Everyone listened.
For several seconds, nothing.
Then the forest shook.
Not from footsteps.
From impact.
Deep.
Heavy.
A distant roar followed.
The woman looked back toward them.
”Because whatever scared the drakes off the lower slope is still coming this way.”
Kael’s System flashed.
[Regional Threat Update]
Large mana disturbance detected south-southwest
Distance: unresolved
Magnitude: above local baseline
Milo looked toward Kael.
”That face again.”
Kael did not take his eyes off the trees.
”Something’s coming.”
The woman looked at him.
”You needed magic to figure that out?”
Kael stared.
Milo smiled despite himself.
”Oh, I like her.”
Sera elbowed him.
The woman looked toward Galahad.
”If you want the wounded alive, stop standing in the open.”
Galahad did not argue.
”Where?”
She pointed farther north.
”There’s an old survey cut. Stone on three sides. Narrow entrance. Bad place to get trapped.”
”Then why go there?”
”Because it’s worse to stay here.”
Galahad looked at Iris.
She nodded once.
”I saw the cut on approach.”
”Defensible?”
”For people.”
Galahad looked toward Kael.
Kael scanned in the direction indicated.
[Terrain Analysis]
Rock shelf / recessed survey cut detected
Entry width: narrow
Overhead stability: moderate
Multiple exit routes: limited
Defensive value: high
Escape value: poor
Exactly what she had said.
Galahad made the decision.
”We move.”
Davin reached Eron.
Not a hug.
Not at first.
He grabbed his shoulder hard enough that Eron winced.
”You idiot.”
Eron laughed.
”You came back.”
Davin’s face tightened.
”Of course I came back.”
Rask watched them.
Something passed across his expression.
Kel, leaning against Mara nearby, saw it too.
He nudged Rask.
”No one gets left?”
Rask looked toward him.
Kel had heard Tovin earlier.
Rask looked toward Tovin’s litter.
Then back at Kel.
”Apparently.”
Kael felt that line settle into another group.
Interesting.
Dangerous.
Good.
The expedition moved north toward the survey cut.
The ninth woman fell into step beside Sera.
Sera looked at the metal rod in her hand.
”That yours?”
”Yes.”
”What is it?”
The woman looked at Sera’s bow.
”What’s that?”
Sera stared.
”A bow.”
”Then mine’s a rod.”
Milo laughed.
Sera looked toward him.
”Don’t.”
”I said nothing.”
”You laughed.”
”Freedom remains under attack.”
The woman glanced at Milo.
”You always like this?”
Sera answered.
”Unfortunately.”
Milo put a hand to his chest.
”Betrayed twice in one day.”
The woman almost smiled.
Almost.
Kael noticed Sera studying her.
Not only the rod.
The burn line.
The lack of a conventional weapon.
A ranged fighter recognizing another ranged fighter?
Maybe.
Too soon to know.
He kept walking.
Behind them, another distant impact rolled through the forest.
Closer.
The System showed no identity.
No answer.
Only pressure.
Only movement.
Only one more reason not to stop.
They reached the survey cut less than five minutes later.
Iris entered first.
Then Galahad.
The stone recess opened wider inside than Kael expected, perhaps enough for the entire group if they packed carefully. Three sides were enclosed by dark volcanic rock, while the entrance narrowed between two natural pillars.
Good defense.
Terrible escape.
Galahad began placing people immediately.
”Wounded deepest. Fighters rotate entrance. No heavy magic near Tovin unless there’s no choice. Iris, check the rear wall for cracks. Sera, high angle if you can find one. Milo, conserve.”
Milo looked offended.
”I was conserving.”
”You nearly collapsed twice.”
”That is unrelated.”
”No.”
The unknown woman looked between them.
”You’re the leader?”
Galahad nodded.
”Galahad Charney.”
Her eyes shifted.
Recognition.
”Adventure Guild.”
”Yes.”
She looked toward Kael.
”And you.”
Kael waited.
She studied his face.
Then the crimson eyes.
Something changed in hers.
Not fear.
Recognition.
”Prince Kael.”
Rask looked toward her.
”You know him?”
”Everyone with ears knows the Tenth Prince is rebuilding Blackwood.”
Kael did not like how easily information traveled.
Then again, perhaps he should have expected it by now.
”What’s your name?”
The woman looked at him.
A pause.
Not long.
Long enough to make the answer deliberate.
”Veyra Sol.”
Kael repeated it once internally.
Veyra.
Distinct.
Good.
Milo looked at the rod.
”Are you going to tell us what that does?”
Veyra glanced at him.
”No.”
Sera smiled.
Actually smiled.
Milo stared at her.
”You like her.”
”I didn’t say that.”
”You smiled.”
”I smile.”
”Rarely.”
Sera’s expression flattened.
”Keep talking.”
Milo stopped.
Veyra looked between them.
”Are you two always—”
A roar cut her off.
Close.
Too close.
Everyone turned toward the entrance.
Kael’s System flashed hard enough to cover half his vision.
[THREAT DETECTED]
Large biological signature approaching
Mana output: abnormal
Heat output: extreme
Classification: draconic — uncertain subtype
Darius stepped forward.
Kael followed.
Galahad raised his sword.
Sera moved to the highest usable ledge along the interior wall.
Her hand reached for her quiver.
Fourteen.
Kael saw her count.
Once.
Then Veyra stepped toward the entrance and raised the metal rod.
Thin lines carved along its length began to glow.
Milo stared.
”Ah.”
Sera looked toward him.
”What?”
”That’s not a normal focus.”
Veyra’s eyes stayed on the trees.
”No.”
The roar came again.
This time the rock beneath Kael’s boots trembled.
Whatever was approaching was larger than the mature drakes they had already fought.
Not Ash-King.
Kael refused to make that leap.
Not without evidence.
But large.
Powerful.
Close.
The System added another warning.
[Observed mana pattern resembles residual thermal damage previously analyzed]
Kael’s grip tightened around his sword.
The narrow burns.
The drake’s scorched flank.
The line through the trees.
Same pattern.
Not proof of source.
But connected.
Veyra lowered the rod slightly.
Her face changed.
For the first time since they met her, confidence disappeared.
”That isn’t supposed to be here.”
Galahad looked at her.
”You know what it is?”
Veyra did not answer.
Outside the survey cut, something enormous pushed through the forest.
Trees cracked.
Sera drew one arrow.
Thirteen would remain if she fired.
Her breathing changed.
Kael heard it.
She did too.
Her fingers tightened around the string.
Milo looked up at her.
”Sera.”
She kept her eyes on the entrance.
”I know.”
He did not ask what she knew.
He only shifted his position beneath her ledge.
Ready.
Not close enough to crowd her.
Close enough to catch her if she fell.
Then the trees outside parted.
And the first thing Kael saw was not the creature’s head.
It was the burn running across its chest.
A narrow black line.
Straight.
Clean.
The same kind of wound Veyra’s mysterious attack had left behind.
Only this time, the thing carrying it was still alive.
And angry.
