SSS Talent: From Trash to Tyrant

Kesh had taken one of the smaller recovery offices above the eastern locks. The room had been built for engineers rather than admirals, with two desks, a wall map of the second ring and a narrow window overlooking the pumps.

When Trafalgar arrived, Kesh was reading casualty reports with his coat folded over the back of his chair. He finished the page, placed it with the others and looked up.

”You asked for me.”

”I did.” Trafalgar placed a thin folder on the empty desk. ”I think we’ve reached the point where speaking around this wastes both our time.”

Kesh closed the report. ”Then don’t.”

Trafalgar opened the folder and took out the first copy. He placed it where Kesh could read the name and date.

”Halvic Meer. Three days after Nyssara died, he left a sealed Meraval on a Tide vessel under your special authorisation.”

”We’ve discussed that.”

”We have. I’m not asking you to explain it again.”

Kesh stopped looking at Trafalgar and read the document instead. Trafalgar placed a second copy beside it: Emric Varn’s death registration and the warehouse renewal carrying the same man’s name months later.

”Varn leased the warehouse Rhavel died protecting. He died about a year ago. After his burial, somebody renewed that lease using his commercial identification and his signature.”

Kesh read both pages without touching them. His eyes stayed on the renewal for several seconds.

”Forgery.”

”Probably.”

”Then take it to Ithanne.”

”I already accessed it through her office. There’s a record of exactly what I read.”

Trafalgar added the next pages. ”Varn’s company was Veyren Maritime. Dissolved years ago. The cargo trail behind it runs through a coastal port that no longer appears in the current system. Every step backward reaches something that can’t answer questions.”

”Merchant fraud can survive its merchants.”

Another copy came down beside the others, this one carrying the hearing seal. Kesh glanced at the heading before Trafalgar continued.

”Aldis Brenn testified that cargo moved through sealed sectors on Tide authorisation during Nyssara’s final year. Toran heard him say the same thing before the hearing and repeated it under oath.”

”Public record.”

”Yes.”

”You’re showing me things my own people can request.”

”That’s the point.”

Kesh did not respond, so Trafalgar took out the final set. These were the records surrounding Rhavel Sorn.

”Rhavel took men off the watch without a posting order. Two pressure crossings were sealed hours before he came for me. The freight plaza had another force waiting, and somebody knew enough about Rhosyn to post a man watching for her ability.”

Kesh kept the same expression he had worn through every hearing. Trafalgar continued without giving him time to redirect the discussion.

”You told the hearing Rhavel acted outside Tide authority.”

”He did.”

”One commander can pull men from his own watch. What he can’t do alone is clear maintenance routes, close pressure crossings, alter access and prepare the only remaining exit before his target arrives.”

”You’re assuming all of that came through the fleet.”

”The crossings did. The soldiers did. The lock access did.” Trafalgar kept his voice even. ”And after Rhavel died, you gave the court every record that separated him from official Tide orders.”

Kesh watched him for several seconds. His voice remained low when he answered.

”Careful.”

”I’m being careful. That’s why I’m sitting here instead of putting this before a chamber.”

The pumps outside kept running, loud enough to keep the room private. Trafalgar rested one hand beside the papers and continued.

”Meer leaves under your signature. A dead man keeps signing for the warehouse. Cargo crosses closed sectors with Tide approval. Your commander tries to kill me after I start asking about those movements, and the preparation uses infrastructure your organisation controls.”

”None of that proves I ordered anything.”

”I know.”

Kesh waited, and Trafalgar gave him the part that mattered. He had already decided exactly how far he wanted to push this.

”If I wanted you arrested, I wouldn’t be here. I don’t have enough for that. I have enough to make every faction demand that The Tide lose control of the recovery and that your old authorisations get reviewed outside your command.”

Kesh’s fingers stopped against the desk. Trafalgar noticed it immediately.

”Canal Houses would support it now,” Trafalgar said. ”The Ancients already distrust the fleet deployment. Corvyn learned from me that Meer left under your signature. He didn’t know, and Toran was beside us when he found out.”

Kesh’s jaw tightened. The documents had not caused that reaction; Corvyn’s name had.

”You spoke to Corvyn.”

”He asked questions. I answered them.”

”And now you’re here.”

”Because I don’t think Corvyn knows what you were doing.”

The silence lasted longer after that. Kesh rose and walked to the wall map, stopping near the eastern sector where recovery markings covered the flooded streets.

”You’ve built a convincing political argument,” Kesh said. ”That isn’t the same as proving a crime.”

”I’ve said that twice.”

”Then what do you want?”

”Nothing from you.”

Kesh turned from the map. Trafalgar left every copy on the desk and closed the empty folder.

”I wanted you to know exactly how far I’ve reached.”

Kesh looked down at the documents together. Meer, Varn, the sealed cargo, Rhavel and the hearing record now sat in front of him, each one still defensible on its own.

Trafalgar watched him for several seconds. Kesh could also see how difficult those explanations became once somebody placed all of them before a chamber.

”I’ll leave those with you,” Trafalgar said. ”They’re copies.”

He opened the door and stepped into the corridor, where his assigned guard pushed away from the wall and followed. Trafalgar had almost reached the next junction when the office door opened behind him.

Kesh called for two aides and gave them instructions too quietly for Trafalgar to hear. One went toward the harbour offices while the other took the eastern stair toward the recovery levels.

Both men were running before they reached the next corner. Trafalgar continued toward the castle district with the guard behind him.

He had gone to Kesh to force a decision, and the admiral had made one. Whatever still mattered most to him lay in one of those two directions.
