SSS Talent: From Trash to Tyrant

The box had no seam he could find and no lock he could pick, which was a message in itself. His father did not hand out puzzles by accident.

Trafalgar held it flat on his palm and pushed a thread of mana into the wood, and it opened the way a hand opens, unfolding along joints that had not been there a breath before.

Inside, on a bed of black cloth, lay a ring.

It was a heavy band of dark grey metal, plain to the point of severity, with a single stone set flush into it that gave back no light at all, a small dead well of a thing that looked less set into the ring than swallowed by it. He knew a item when he was looking at one. He turned it in his fingers and let the window read it for him where only he could see.

[Hollowvault Signet - Legendary Rank]

He went very still on the deck.

Type: Ring.

Effects: opens a sealed inner space, separate from the wearer’s inventory, made to hold a single living thing in suspension. Whatever went in stopped aging, stopped drawing mana, stopped breathing in any way the world outside could measure, and slept. Blood-scrying and lineage-tracking slid off it and found nothing. Only the hand that sealed the ring could open it again. It would pulse against the wearer’s finger if what it held tried to wake, or if anyone nearby went hunting for it.

He read it a second time, slower, to be sure the thing said what he thought it said.

He laughed, once, short and with little humor in it, because of course it did.

’You clever old bastard,’ he thought.

He knew exactly what this was for. There was only one living thing in the world he needed hidden, kept asleep, and kept invisible to a Great Family that had been turning over stones to find it for two years. Esmond. The alchemist was sleeping somewhere at this very moment because Caelum held him under in person, one of Caelum’s own bodies burned on nothing but keeping an old man unconscious, day and night, for two years running. That was the cost he’d been quietly paying for the privilege of owning that particular piece of proof.

This ring paid it off in one stroke. Drop Esmond inside, and the signet did the work Caelum had been doing by hand. No more standing guard. No more risk of the man slipping his keeper. Just a ring on a finger, and a witness folded away in the dark of it, portable, silent, and utterly beyond Vaelion’s reach.

Valttair had handed him the key to his own most useful secret, wrapped in plain dark wood, weeks before the mine had ever cracked open.

Which meant the old man had known.

Not the details, maybe. Not the nest, or the tubing, or the name Rivena said out loud. But he had known his son was carrying a sleeping alchemist around like a debt, and he had known where this road was pointed, and he had made sure Trafalgar walked onto that ship with the one tool the coming work would need.

Valttair did not give gifts. He positioned pieces, and dressed the positioning up as generosity because it cost him nothing to.

’He always knows more than he lets on,’ Trafalgar thought, sliding the signet onto his finger and feeling it settle cold and certain against the bone. ’The trick is never mistaking that for him being on my side.’

Moses had been watching his face the whole time, reading it the way he read everything.

”By the look of you,” the captain said, ”it is something good.”

”It is useful.” Trafalgar closed his hand, and the dead stone vanished into his fist. ”Which from him is rarer and worth more.” He glanced up. ”Did he tell you what it was?”

”He did not tell me anything, young master. He handed me a box and told me to hand it to you.” A dry note surfaced. ”The patriarch does not explain himself to his soldiers. He gives them things to carry and lets them find out the weight later.”

”That sounds like him.” Trafalgar looked back out over the rail, where the last of the peaks were sliding past pink and enormous under the failing light, and turned the new weight of the ring over against his knuckle. There was a great deal to do with it, and none of it could start until Esmond was out of Caelum’s hands and into the signet’s dark, and that could not happen until he was home.

Home. The word did no work in his chest at all. It named a destination, nothing warmer.

He put the box away, the plain wood folding back into the nothing of his inventory, and let the cold and the drone of the wings fill the space where a lesser man might have felt gratitude.

”How long to the castle?” he asked.

Alfred answered from the helm without turning, his voice carrying flat over the wind. ”Two days,If the weather holds and doesn’t get any worse than it is now and you do not distract me with your charming conversation. Less if it turns and I have to run ahead of it.”

Two days. Two days of cold sky and Alfred’s needling and the ring going quiet on his finger, and then a black fortress on a white mountain, and a study at the top of it where his father would be waiting to hear every word of what had happened in that mine.

He was not looking forward to that room. He never was. Valttair had a way of making a report feel like an interrogation and an interrogation feel like a chess game already three moves lost, and Trafalgar would walk in carrying a dead queen, a hand behind it, a sister’s name, and a sleeping alchemist he had not yet mentioned to a living soul.

The vessel bore on into the dark, north and up, toward the seat of House Morgain and the man who had already known.
