SSS Talent: From Trash to Tyrant

Trafalgar stood among the graves and fed a thread of mana into the shadowlink until the small coil of it warmed and woke against his palm, ready to hold whatever he gave it.

He kept it short and plain, the way Caelum liked things, the way that traveled well.

”Caelum. It’s me.” His breath fogged and tore off on the wind. He didn’t lift his voice for it. ”The mine’s a nest. I went to the bottom today and saw the whole of it. A matriarch brooding a clutch on the richest crystal vein in Morgain land, the brood grown fat feeding off the stone. Tomorrow Moses and I go in together and put an end to all of it. That part’s handled.”

He let the wind move through and went on.

”The rest isn’t. This wasn’t a rift and it wasn’t bad luck. Someone put a hand in it. Livestock hauled down to keep the beasts fed, blood weeks older than the wave, tools no miner carries, and the floor swept clear behind whoever worked it. A brood doesn’t garrison a mine. This one was fed here and held here on purpose until it burst and took two thousand men with it. They wanted this vein turned into a hatchery and spent a whole town to keep it quiet.” A pause, cold and even. ”I’ve no proof to hang on a name yet. I’ve a direction. That’s for Valttair to weigh, not me.”

His gaze went over the field, the crowded mounds, the leaning markers.

”One more thing, and it isn’t a small one. The people here lost the men who kept their households fed, and they held together anyway while the family was slow to come. They’re owed. Food, money, whatever keeps their tables from going bare through the season. I’ve promised them it’ll be seen to, so see that the promise has legs when it reaches home. I don’t care to have lied to them.” A last beat. ”That’s everything. Get it to the old man. He’ll want it tonight, not when we crawl back up with a dead queen and a tale.”

He closed his hand around the shadowlink and pushed the words out of it, down whatever cold thread ran between him and the man who carried its twin, and felt the small weight of the message leave his palm.

Now there was only him, and the graves, and the wind. He looked at the field a while longer, gave it nothing his face would ever have to answer for, and started back down to the town and what little sleep the night had left him.

A long way from any mountain, in a city that did not know his true name, Caelum stood in the dark of a rooftop and did not move.

Below him, across a gap of tiled roofs and lamplit windows, the figure he’d been posted to watch went about its evening as though nothing at all rode its shoulders. He’d held the same patient watch for hours. Watching was most of the work. He had a knack for going unseen that ran deeper than any skill, a body he could wear as many faces as a job asked of him, and he’d learned a long time ago that the hard part of infiltration was the waiting, done well, for days on end without a slip.

The shadowlink at his belt went warm. He caught it before he’d have called it a feeling, a small cold pulse against his hip that meant a message waited with his name on it.

He marked his mark’s window, read the roofline and the street below, found nothing awake to catch him, and drew back into the black behind a chimney stack before he closed his fist around the coil.

A breath of his own mana into it, and a voice unspooled against his ear that no one three feet off could have caught. Trafalgar’s.

He listened to all of it once, unmoving, then a second time, because the young master did not send word this far up the line for small things, and this was no small thing.

The words did not carry panic, which made them worse. Trafalgar had learned the shape of danger well enough to speak of it without raising his voice at all now.

A nest, a matriarch, two thousand dead, and under all of it, said flat and sure the way the boy said the things he was surest of, a hand in it.

Someone inside reaching into Morgain ground.

’So it’s begun,’ he thought, and found no surprise waiting in him, only a cold reckoning he’d half expected for a while now. ’Out in the open at last.’

He turned the tail of the message over. The people. Food and coin for the households that had lost their men. A small stone to set beside a matriarch and a conspiracy, and the boy had spent as many words on it as on any of the rest.

Caelum filed that away with the other pieces of Trafalgar du Morgain he’d been quietly gathering for two years, the ones that never once fit the story the family told about him, and he kept his own counsel, as was his habit.

He let one of himself go. It cost no more than a thought. A second Caelum peeled off the first the way a shadow steps off a wall, took the message whole, and slid down off the roof into the dark of the streets, bound by the fastest quiet roads for the one man who had to hear it before the sun came up. The patriarch would not rest easy on this one. Caelum found he didn’t mind that in the least.

The first of him stayed where he was, and turned his eyes back to the lit window and the figure moving unhurried behind it, and eased into the rest of his watch as though nothing on the whole board had shifted at all.
