Rumor Has It I'm Dating the Football Captain

Chapter 151: Chapter 151: The Hidden File

”Bring the Calloway file. Do not enter it into the standard archive.”

Audrey read the single surviving sentence out loud. Her voice barely broke a whisper in the quiet basement.

Ben immediately started typing. His fingers hammered the keyboard as he searched the primary archive system for alternate storage locations. He bypassed the main drives and dug directly into the overflow bins.

”Nothing,” Ben announced.

Daisy pulled up the restricted physical storage records on her own laptop. Her eyes darted across rows of barcodes and box numbers.

”Nothing here either,” Daisy said.

Audrey stared at the glowing screen. She replayed the exact wording of the corrupted message in her head.

”They didn’t say destroy it,” Audrey pointed out.

Ben stopped typing. He turned his head and looked at her.

”They said don’t archive it,” Ben realized.

Audrey nodded slowly. ”Which means someone expected it to be retrieved later.”

The entire atmosphere in the room shifted. They were no longer searching for a deleted file. They were searching for a physical box deliberately stored somewhere outside the normal system.

Daisy suddenly gasped. She clicked back to the December photograph showing the wide shot of the corporate event.

”The black folder was sitting on a table in the executive event area,” Daisy said.

She opened a new tab and searched the newspaper’s old event records. She cross-referenced the date of the gala with the venue logs.

”Look at this,” Daisy instructed. ”The corporate event wasn’t held in the main stadium offices. It was held in the executive conference wing.”

Ben immediately pulled up a digital blueprint of the old newspaper floor plans. He dragged the map across the screen until he found the correct wing. He zoomed in on a tiny square located just behind the main hall.

”There was a small records room connected to the executive conference wing,” Ben said quietly. ”It wasn’t part of the normal corporate archive.”

Audrey felt a sharp spike of adrenaline.

”That’s where they kept it.”

Ben frowned slightly. ”Maybe.”

Audrey gave him a completely flat, exhausted look.

”You’re doing the thing again.”

”What thing?” Ben asked defensively.

”Refusing to believe we’re right until the universe signs a confession,” Audrey stated.

”It usually doesn’t,” Ben replied without missing a beat.

Daisy rolled her eyes and pulled out her cell phone.

”I am calling Martha.”

Martha was the newspaper’s retired archive manager. She had run the basement with an iron fist back in 2019. Daisy put the phone on speaker and waited as it rang.

”What do you want?” a grumpy, raspy voice answered.

”Hi, Martha,” Daisy smiled. ”We have a quick question about a corporate event from December 2019.”

Martha remembered the event perfectly. More importantly, she remembered a massive argument happening the morning after.

”The event photographer came down here complaining,” Martha recalled loudly over the speaker. ”He said someone pulled one of his photographs from the archive before it could even be digitized.”

”Do you know who requested it?” Ben asked, leaning closer to the phone.

”I don’t know the name,” Martha grumbled. ”But the paperwork came directly from Calloway Football Group Executive Administration. And it wasn’t just the photograph they took. They took the physical folder that was visible in the shot.”

Audrey’s eyes went wide.

They were finally getting somewhere.

They thanked Martha and hung up.

Ben aggressively typed a new query into the old newspaper transfer logs. He filtered the results by date and department.

One entry flashed on the screen.

December 2019. Corporate material transferred to off-site restricted storage. Destination Box 19-EA.

”EA,” Daisy whispered.

”Executive Administration,” Audrey finished.

Ben accessed the old storage inventory. Box 19-EA was still listed in the system. But the status bar glowed a dull yellow.

Removed from circulation.

Ben looked up from the screen.

”That’s not the same as destroyed.”

They immediately submitted an urgent retrieval request.

Two hours later, a heavy cardboard box sat in the middle of their table.

It was incredibly old and covered in a thick layer of dust. The red security seal running across the top had already been sliced open once before.

Inside the box sat a chaotic stack of papers. There was the original corporate photograph, several photocopied internal memos, the original November access schedule, and a personnel authorization sheet. There was a copy of the original financial complaint, the original east-wing access record, and the revised record.

And finally, resting at the very bottom, was the black folder.

Audrey immediately reached for it.

Ben slapped his hand down on the table, blocking her.

”Gloves.”

Audrey looked at him in total disbelief.

”Seriously?”

”You want fingerprints on evidence?” Ben demanded.

Audrey let out a heavy sigh. She reluctantly pulled on a pair of tight blue latex gloves from the archive supply kit.

They carefully pulled out the original, high-resolution photograph first.

Now they could see absolutely everything.

The black folder wasn’t merely sitting on a table. The photograph clearly showed who had been carrying it.

The senior operations executive stood beside the table, but the folder was in someone else’s hands.

A tall man in a dark, expensive suit. His face was partially visible in the bright lighting of the gala.

Daisy zoomed in on the high-resolution scan.

Ben stared at the screen. He immediately recognized the sharp jawline and commanding posture from the old corporate directory.

”Miles Calloway,” he said quietly.

Audrey frowned.

”Who is he?”

Ben pulled up the archived personnel profile.

”Senior executive. Executive Administration.”

Daisy leaned closer.

”How senior?”

Ben’s expression hardened.

”Senior enough to approve internal reviews.”

The dusty archive room went completely silent.

”We need the documents,” Ben finally said.

Audrey frowned. The photograph proved Miles was physically present with the file. But Ben was right. It didn’t yet prove what he actually did with it.

Audrey carefully opened the black folder.

Inside sat the original financial complaint from Daniel Mercer. Mercer had discovered that several massive payments didn’t match the club’s official corporate records. He had raised the issue directly with senior management.

Written in thick red ink across the very top of the complaint was a stamp.

EXECUTIVE REVIEW REQUIRED.

Right below the red stamp was a handwritten instruction. The handwriting appeared to match the senior operations executive’s signature and notes from the other documents. But the bold approval signature at the bottom belonged to Miles Calloway.

Audrey read the instruction twice.

Her stomach tightened.

”Maintain control of succession-sensitive materials. Keep the designated individual outside the investigation. Revise all relevant access records before the matter reaches the board.”

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

The documents established one thing clearly.

Miles Calloway knew about Mercer’s complaint.

He knew Mason’s name had been inserted into the revised timeline.

And his approval had authorized the changes.

Audrey stared at the signature.

Why Mason?

Audrey picked up Mercer’s original complaint. She scanned the document rapidly.

Mercer’s original complaint didn’t accuse Mason. It didn’t even mention Mason at all. Instead, Mercer specifically named the financial discrepancy and identified the accounts and payments he believed required investigation.

At the very bottom of the complaint was a tiny, handwritten note.

”Escalated to Executive Administration.”

Daisy stared at the words.

”So Miles had access to this before the records were changed.”

Ben nodded slowly.

Then Audrey noticed another small notation scrawled in the margin.

”Meeting scheduled. 19 Nov.”

It was the exact same date as the surviving calendar appointment they had found earlier. It was the exact same reference number.

Everything connected.

They laid all the documents across the large table.

Ben grabbed a whiteboard marker and began building the timeline.

Daniel Mercer discovers suspicious financial transfers.

Mercer reports the discrepancy.

Miles Calloway receives the complaint.

Private meeting with Executive Administration and senior operations occurs.

Mason’s presence becomes useful to the cover story.

East-wing access records are revised.

Mason is inserted into the historical documentation.

Mercer’s complaint is removed from the standard archive.

The Calloway file is hidden.

Audrey stared at the timeline written in black ink.

”Miles approved the changes,” Audrey said quietly.

Ben nodded.

”That’s what the documents show.”

Daisy continued flipping through the financial documents in the box. She suddenly stopped and pulled a ledger close to her face.

There was one company that appeared repeatedly beside the suspicious transactions.

Kessler Sports Consulting.

Ben slowly looked up.

Audrey was already looking at him.

They had found the next piece.

”So Miles approved the cover-up,” Ben said.

”But the money still went somewhere,” Audrey replied.

Ben nodded.

”Exactly.”

But the financial mystery was still alive. They had finally solved who buried the crime and manipulated the records, but they hadn’t yet established exactly who received the stolen funds.

Suddenly, Audrey’s cell phone started ringing loudly against the wooden table.

The screen lit up brightly.

Mason.

She stared at his name glowing on the glass. Her chest felt incredibly tight.

Daisy looked at the phone and immediately understood the heavy conflict.

”You’re going to tell him?” Daisy asked softly.

Audrey looked at Miles’s bold signature on the falsified document. Then she looked at Mason’s name typed onto the fake access record.

”Not like this,” Audrey whispered.

She picked up the phone and answered the call.

Mason’s deep, rough voice came through the speaker.

”Mason?”

”Where are you?”

She looked around the dusty, windowless archive room. She looked at the towering stacks of evidence. She looked at the high-resolution photograph of Miles holding the black folder.

”At work,” Audrey replied.

A long pause settled over the line.

”Audrey.”

His voice had changed.

She swallowed.

”What?”

”You found something, didn’t you?”
