Naruto: Starting by Reading Minds in Naruto

The joint Chūnin Examination began at Konoha’s gates.

Foreign shinobi entered in a steady stream. Sunagakure, Otogakure, Kusagakure, Amegakure, and several smaller villages sent teams, and every one of them passed before Tonbo’s eyes.

The variety exceeded the story he remembered from his previous life. Some settlements had never appeared in that narrower account. One small village near the Land of Fire called itself Hearth Village. It belonged to no major country and had built its livelihood around using ninjutsu to prepare food. Its shinobi hunted rare ingredients, served caravans, and promoted a new profession they called gourmet shinobi instead of depending upon assassination and espionage.

Their candidates carried sealing pans, fire-resistant gloves, and storage scrolls marked by ingredient rather than weapon. One demonstrated a low flame that could hold the same temperature despite wind; another explained how chakra preserved meat during journeys without changing its flavor. Nothing in Tonbo’s old memories had suggested that a hidden village might survive by making itself useful to kitchens.

The idea sounded absurd until Tonbo read the mission ledger. Hearth Village survived better than many conventional settlements because clients could employ its shinobi without entering a feud. Cooks trained to hunt dangerous animals, preserve meat in the field, control heat, and transport ingredients across hostile terrain. Their work created repeat customers rather than surviving enemies.

Nadeshiko Village offered another path. Its kunoichi combined dance, close combat, and chakra control into techniques found nowhere else. A mountain settlement used gemstones to focus releases through prepared tools. Other small villages had built their identities around terrain, crafts, or services the great nations overlooked.

The gemstone users carried polished stones set into bracers and staves. Their chakra techniques depended upon the cut, clarity, and placement of each piece, turning a miner’s knowledge into a shinobi tradition. A river village displayed knots that changed the current around a boat. None could match a great nation in numbers, so each had cultivated a narrow field difficult for a larger institution to copy quickly.

Many had come to see the wider world rather than win the examination. Their genin lacked the resources of Konoha or Suna, and their leaders knew it. The gathering still gave them a place to advertise their specialties, observe stronger schools, and make agreements they could not reach from isolated homes.

Tonbo had investigated every participating village before the gate opened. Reports had given him names and techniques. Seeing the people made the real world larger. The broad events he remembered remained recognizable, but the spaces between them contained entire communities with purposes of their own.

That difference mattered. The remembered account had followed the people closest to great wars and famous battles. It had never shown every settlement that supplied meals, guided travelers, guarded rivers, or trained a handful of genin. Tonbo could use foreknowledge to anticipate major turns, but treating that outline as the whole world would blind him to most of the people actually living in it.

”An eye-opening assignment,” he murmured.

Izumo stamped another entry paper. ”You say that because you are not counting baggage seals.”

The next group wore Otogakure headbands.

Twelve candidates approached in four teams. Dosu Kinuta, Kin Tsuchi, and Zaku Abumi walked behind a handsome escort whose Rice Country papers named him Iori.

The genin looked around Konoha without hiding their disappointment.

”The Land of Fire is supposed to possess the richest resources in the world,” Kin said. ”Its development does not look worthy of them.”

Dosu’s sleeves hung almost to the ground. ”That is the pride of a great village. They believe being large means they need learn nothing from anyone else. We will show the adults that Otogakure is stronger.”

Zaku laughed. ”Konoha is nothing special. Is it, Iori-sama?”

Their escort smiled without warmth. ”Underestimating Konoha’s shinobi will cost you dearly.”

He placed the delegation’s credentials on the desk.

Izumo read the unfamiliar name and frowned before completing the registration. Surnames and given names from the Land of Rice Fields often differed from those used in Fire, so strangeness alone proved nothing.

”Thank you,” Iori said.

Then he turned to Tonbo. ”So this is Konoha’s Captain Tonbo Tobitake. I have heard a great deal about you.”

Tonbo suppressed a laugh. Orochimaru’s transformation was extraordinary.

He knew Otogakure belonged to Orochimaru, and the escort’s assumed identity carried a serpentine hint that amused its creator. Without that prior knowledge, Tonbo’s senses might have accepted the disguise. The chakra before him differed completely from Orochimaru’s during their earlier encounter. Face, voice, pulse, and presence belonged to Iori.

It was more than an ordinary Transformation Technique laid over the skin. Orochimaru had altered the signs Tonbo would normally use to identify a disguised shinobi, including the texture and rhythm of the chakra system. Contact Evolution could seek deeper information only through physical contact, and touching a foreign escort without cause would reveal Tonbo’s suspicion. For the moment, knowledge supplied what perception could not.

”You have excellent taste,” Tonbo said. ”Are you a fan from the Land of Rice Fields? I can give you an autograph. It may sell for money one day. Since you are a fan, I will even offer a discount.”

Orochimaru found the performance more interesting than offensive. Tonbo did not resemble a feared pursuit captain when he behaved like this, and refusing the joke would draw attention.

He produced a book. ”Sign here. I did not expect to meet you, so this will have to do.”

Tonbo read the cover and stared.

”The Super Collector’s Edition of *Make-Out Paradise*? Only ten copies were printed.”

Izumo and Kotetsu abandoned their paperwork long enough to look.

”It is genuine,” Kotetsu said. ”Jiraiya-sama signed the inside cover.”

”Where did you find it?” Izumo asked.

”A very important friend gave it to me,” Orochimaru replied. ”I am afraid I cannot give it away.”

The answer only deepened their envy.

Tonbo opened the book to the page Orochimaru indicated. ”A man who places my name beside Lord Jiraiya’s must possess discernment. I wish your village many powerful shinobi.”

He signed with an extravagant flourish.

”Thank you.”

The Sound candidates looked at one another. None understood why their leader collected a Konoha shinobi’s autograph. Dosu suspected there was another purpose but kept the question behind his bandages.

Kin’s disdain faltered into confusion. Zaku looked from the book to Tonbo and seemed to reconsider whether the entire exchange was a test. Orochimaru let them wonder. A teacher who explained every deception before his students noticed it would never learn which of them could recognize danger without help.

Once all twelve candidates had registered, Orochimaru led them toward the lodge prepared for Otogakure.

Kotetsu watched the collector’s edition leave. ”Why have none of my important friends given me one of those? Izumo, you are a disappointment.”

Izumo stared at him. ”Why do you not own one? If you did, it would be almost the same as mine. You are equally disappointing.”

Tonbo listened and laughed inwardly. He had given Orochimaru an autograph. The thought pleased him more than another fight would have. He would have enjoyed seeing Orochimaru’s expression if the disguise had known Tonbo recognized it.

The number of Sound candidates mattered more. Twelve genin represented a larger training program than Tonbo expected from a young hidden village. Whatever else Orochimaru was, he taught and gathered talent well. Each of the Sannin had produced exceptional students in a different way.

Tonbo considered his own record. Tessen Togekei had become a jōnin. Kiba was still a child and had not finished developing. Most of Tonbo’s other students had followed specialized paths without reaching the same rank.

That comparison was not entirely flattering.

The Sound delegation disappeared into Konoha. Another group approached the gate with unfamiliar headbands and a case of polished gemstones. Tonbo straightened the registration sheets and prepared to discover what the reports had failed to tell him.
