Naruto: Starting by Reading Minds in Naruto

Konoha’s main gate. Cool morning air moved through the open gate, carrying road dust and distant wagon noise.

Iruka and the other two stood waiting, packs already shouldered.

”Our first real mission, finally. Watch me wrap this up in a single day.” Iruka sounded thoroughly confident. After all the pets and stray cats he’d tracked down over the past month, one runaway shinobi didn’t seem like much of a stretch.

Mibu Shinobu and Tessen Togekei felt the same pull. They’d thrown themselves into every D-rank chore with real enthusiasm once the Will of Fire got involved, but some part of them had been waiting for something with actual stakes. A mission to gather intelligence on a shinobi carried a B-rank classification, and that alone had them fired up.

”Where is the captain? We’ve been ready forever.”

”Sorry, sorry — saying goodbye to my fiancée took longer than planned.” Tonbo appeared behind them without warning.

All three jumped.

Only the sound of his voice settled them back down.

”Captain-sama, you’ll give us heart attacks doing that,” Iruka said, hand on his chest.

”Also — when did ’girlfriend’ become ’fiancée’?”

”Date’s set. Start preparing to toast at my wedding.” Tonbo said it with obvious pride.

Precious few of Naruto’s generation, as he recalled it, ended up married at all — a handful of fixed pairings among the strongest, and beyond that only Kurenai and Asuma, and Hayate and Yūgao. Getting there first meant he’d have plenty to lord over them later.

”And remember — a shinobi has to read the moment. Know when it’s safe to rest and when to stay sharp. Stay tense too long and it wears down your mind. Let your guard down completely, and that’s exactly when trouble finds you.”

The lecture came easily; it was solid advice, distilled from more borrowed memory than he cared to count, filtered through his own experience besides.

”Yes, Captain.”

It made sense to them in theory, though privately none of the three believed anyone, even the strongest shinobi alive, could truly stay alert every waking moment.

”Let’s move. Kagetsu, in the Land of Fire.”

The four advanced through the forest in a loose wedge.

”According to the Hokage’s intelligence, Asuma passed through Kagetsu two days ago — only a brief sighting. The moment we arrive, we start gathering information. Understood?”

”Yes, Captain.”

Tonbo’s tone had shifted, and it settled over the other three as well. Inside Konoha he was their teacher. Out here, he was their captain, and there was no room for carelessness.

He let his perception drift over them as they moved, chakra bound to their feet exactly as he’d taught. A month of focus training had clearly paid off — not just in holding their attention, but in reading their surroundings and pulling chakra fast enough to respond to a threat. Tree-walking and water-walking they’d both picked up within days, and used without a second thought now.

Half a day’s travel brought them to Kagetsu — more of a proper town than he’d expected, and a lively one. They found an inn to serve as a rendezvous point, then split up to work the streets for information.

Tonbo walked the main road alone, taking in everything around him, filing it away without effort. A sensory shinobi’s advantage held here as anywhere — within a few kilometers, little escaped him, and after years spent reading minds on top of everything else, sorting through what he picked up was almost effortless, more a matter of habit by now than actual concentration.

Asuma was out looking for the ”king” he wanted to protect, if the Third’s account held — the metaphor Hiruzen himself had used. And if his knowledge of the future remained accurate, Asuma would spend time as one of the Guardian Twelve protecting the daimyō before ever returning to Konoha, once he’d found it.

Maybe the simplest plan was to wait for him in the capital.

Fragments of Kagetsu’s local color drifted through his perception — a hot spring resort, a black market somewhere below, a casino with more curves on display than cards. And then, unexpectedly, a chakra signature large enough to draw his full attention, with a smaller one beside it.

Surely not that much of a coincidence.

It was Tsunade — the woman half of Konoha’s shinobi seemed to dream about, and one of the Village’s more notorious gamblers besides. Small world, he thought, though it changed nothing for him. He already had his own reason to come home at night. He filed the sighting away and let his attention move on; any piece of intelligence could prove useful eventually.

He turned his focus to his three genin instead. All of them were working the town properly — Iruka at the inn, asking around; Mibu Shinobu at the hot springs. Tessen Togekei had gone somewhere sharper: the local sausage stand and a noodle shop, both known from the intelligence brief as places Asuma liked to eat.

As for himself, he was already fairly certain where this all led — the capital, sooner or later. With nothing urgent left to do, he returned to the inn, pulled out a notebook, and let his mind wander into his own research.

His three most ambitious genjutsu concepts, still years from completion. First: rewriting history itself into an enemy’s memory, inserting his own presence retroactively into their understanding of events. Second: a technique to manipulate an enemy’s form, touch, and every sense at once, true deception rather than mere illusion. Third: the technique already half-finished and already named — Living Weave, born from Yin Release’s gift for shaping something out of nothing, extended toward manipulating the very weather of a battlefield.

Teaching Iruka and the others had turned out to sharpen more than just their Barrier ninjutsu; it sharpened his own thinking too, forcing him to explain principles he usually took for granted. Genjutsu remained the field he’d poured the most of himself into regardless, and these three ideas were the hardest fruit of two years spent exploring it in every spare hour he could find. Each one could easily consume a decade on its own, so he chose carefully where to spend his effort, and never let so much as an idle evening of research go to waste.

Time passed quickly with a notebook in hand. Dusk had settled by the time he sensed the three of them returning, and he put his notes away.

A knock.

”Come in.”

”I’m exhausted. Turns out finding a person is a lot harder than finding a cat or a dog,” Tessen Togekei said, and the three trooped in looking thoroughly worn.

”How’d it go?” Tonbo asked.

”Nothing,” Iruka said, deflated. ”It’s like he never set foot here.”

”Same for me,” Mibu Shinobu admitted.

Tessen Togekei, though, was smiling. ”Asuma-senpai did come through two days ago. Ate an enormous pile of grilled sausage at the stand. Nothing after that, though.”

The other two stared, surprised there’d been anything to find at all.

”Good work,” Tonbo said, meaning it. ”The two of you could stand to learn something from how he reads a preference like that instead of just knocking on doors and asking straight out. It’s a small detail, but it’s exactly the kind of thing that separates a chūnin from a jōnin over the long run.”

Iruka looked unconvinced. ”Fine, he gets the spotlight this time. Won’t happen again.”

”What about you, Captain? What did you find?”

All three turned to him, waiting.
