Take Me Away, Dark Lord!

Seraphina sat perfectly straight, balancing a small paper boat on her head to practice posture. ”And what if they insult Papa Duke?”

Gallahan’s golden eyes flashed with sudden, intense, fanatical devotion. ”If they insult His Grace, don’t draw your throwing knife. You must deploy a high-tier verbal riposte. You smile warmly, take a slow sip of tea, and subtly remind them that their husband’s regional garrison is entirely dependent on Bastion mythril subsidies to keep from being eaten by trolls. It is an emotional decapitation!”

”Emotional decapitation,” Seraphina repeated solemnly, nodding so hard the paper boat fell off her head. ”I like it. It’s very clean.”

”Brilliant!” Gallahan cheered, clapping his gauntleted hands. ”She is a political prodigy! She will conquer the Capital in a week!”

From the doorway of the command tent, Kaelus leaned casually against the mythril support pillar, his arms crossed over his chest, watching the unhinged domesticity of his vanguard.

He didn’t intervene.

He didn’t order them to stop.

To Kaelus, the transformation of his blood-soaked warmongers into fanatical, doting babysitters was not a breakdown of discipline; it was an unexpected spiritual healing.

The Black Bastion was composed of broken men.

They were outcasts, survivors of horrific slaughters, men whose souls were scarred by the unceasing, crushing weight of their own killing intent.

They suffered from chronic nightmares.

They suffered from ambient mana corruption.

But looking at them now... the heavy, suffocating miasma of death that usually lingered over their camps had completely dissipated.

They were laughing.

They were competing to find safe berries, whittling wooden toys, and fiercely debating the optimal thread count of toddler blankets.

Seraphina’s pure, uncomplicated joy acted as a brilliant, grounding metaphysical anchor.

She was a tiny, fragile piece of innocence that actively absorbed their darkness and reflected pure, unadulterated human warmth.

Kaelus looked down at his own right hand.

He slowly unclasped his heavy leather glove, revealing the pale, calloused skin and the faint, silvery scar where he had sliced his own thumb to seal their blood oath.

He remembered how she had looked in the library at Oakhaven, throwing her arms around his mythril armor, calling him a grumpy hedgehog who hid his soft belly.

He remembered the feel of her small, sloppy kiss against his cheek.

An entirely unfamiliar sensation twisted in the deepest, most lightless cavern of his soul.

It wasn’t anger.

It wasn’t possessive territoriality.

It was fear.

It was a suffocating, existential dread that bypassed his Grandmaster-tier magical defenses and gripped his heart with hands of ice.

’What am I doing?’ Kaelus asked himself, staring blindly at the rugged, desolate Western crags looming against the twilight sky.

He was the Reaper.

He was a man steeped in blood, a tyrant who lived in a freezing, lightless, black-stone fortress at the edge of the mortal world.

His existence was an unceasing, brutal war against anomalies and corrupt empires.

He had no warmth to give.

He had no peaceful gardens.

When he had taken her from the orphanage, his logic had been flawless.

She was a nameless, disposable orphan.

She was a pawn.

She was a biological asset with an unregistered Dark Core that he could utilize as a radar to navigate the political daggers of the Capital.

He had believed that bringing her into his world was a fair exchange: he gave her food and a name, and she acted as his shield.

He was an arrogant fool.

She wasn’t a pawn.

She was a creature of pure empathy.

She had cried for the starved peasants of Count Rodhe.

She begged to risk her own life to act as bait to save the missing children of Oakhaven.

She looked at his scarred, terrifying warmongers and saw good, honest warmongers.

She looked at him, a blood-soaked butcher, and saw a loving father.

And what was he giving her in return?

He was dragging her across a freezing, desolate mountain range in a metal box.

He was marching her directly into the maws of an abrasive industrialist, a family of toxic assassins, and a fanatical, warmongering fire-Archduke.

He was bringing her to the Imperial Capital, painting a glowing target on her tiny back, and then he was going to carry her to the freezing, lightless wastes of the North, locking her away behind high walls of black stone where the snow was stained permanently red.

He remembered Marquess Julian Myer.

Julian was a good man.

Julian was a former Holy Knight whose soul was so pure it manifested as blinding Light.

Julian lived in a magnificent, sunlit clay city filled with ancient oaks, vibrant markets, jugglers, and candied apples.

Julian wept so sorrowfully when she left.

Julian even offered to fight for her guardianship, to raise her in the peaceful, happy sunlight she deserved.

A toxic, suffocating, intensely bitter feeling of unworthiness flooded Kaelus’s chest.

’I am ruining her,’ the Archduke’s internal monologue whispered, a devastating realization that completely shattered his stoic armor. ’I am dragging a creature of pure light into my lightless grave. If I keep her... if I bind her to the Bastion... the Capital will eventually strike. The anomalies will eventually breach. She will bleed and suffer hardship just because she bears my name.’

His brain, heavily corrupted by this sudden, crushing wave of self-loathing and fatherly terror, frantically attempted to formulate a logical solution to save her from himself.

’A pawn,’ Kaelus lied to his own soul, his thoughts twisting into a grotesque, cowardly knot of pure denial. ’A tactical piece is only valuable if it remains functional. Confining her to the hostile environment of the North will degrade her core. Contrary to that, Marquess Myers’ territory offers optimal environmental stability. It is a strategic necessity to detach the asset. It is... it is merely an efficient reallocation of resources.’

He ground his jaw together so fiercely that a muscle in his cheek twitched.

His violet eyes dimmed, the glowing light retreating entirely into the void of his pupils.

He had to do it.
