Take Me Away, Dark Lord!

”Explain,” Kaelus said, his tone entirely neutral, humoring the chaotic logic of his new daughter.

Seraphina twisted around so she could look him fully in the face.

Her dark eyes were serious, stripped of their usual childish feigned innocence.

”The Emperor has a big castle. He probably has lots of warm soup,” Seraphina reasoned, utilizing her toddler economics. ”But the bad man took money from the people outside. The people with the dirty clothes. And he took money from the orphanages, too, right?”

”He did,” Kaelus confirmed, his eyes narrowing slightly as he followed her train of thought.

”If you take all the shiny coins to your big castle, or give them to the Emperor, the people outside are still going to be hungry,” she said, her voice dropping to a quiet, emotional register. ”And the... the floaty people who are crying in the walls... they are crying because their families don’t have anything left.”

She reached out and gripped the lapel of his coat, her tiny knuckles turning white.

”I know what it’s like when the big adults take the money and leave you with just hot water and sawdust,” she whispered, the memory of her past five years bleeding into her words. ”It hurts your tummy. And it makes you feel like nobody cares if you disappear. Those people out there... they lost their families just like I did. They are just shrimps, Papa Duke. The bad whale ate all their food.”

She looked back at the space where Howard was floating. ”If we give the coins back to the shrimps... maybe the floaty people will finally stop crying.”

The grand hall was so silent you could hear the dust motes settling on the marble.

Kaelus von Nacht stared at the child on his lap.

He had expected her to ask for toys.

He had expected her to ask for dresses, or sweets, or perhaps a pet.

He had adopted her to be a bait, fully anticipating a selfish, terrified, or ignorant child that he could mold into a political tool.

Instead, he was looking at a creature of painful empathy, wrapped in the cynical pragmatism of a street survivor.

She wasn’t acting out of a naive desire to ’save the world.’

She was acting out of a deeply ingrained, visceral understanding of poverty and loss.

She didn’t care about the laws of the Empire; she cared about the empty stomachs of the people left behind.

It was a dangerous weakness in his world.

Compassion got you killed.

But as he looked at her trembling lip, Kaelus felt that infuriating, warm pressure expand in his chest once again, completely overriding his tactical logic.

”You would defy Imperial law and risk the Emperor’s wrath for peasants you have never met?” Kaelus asked softly, testing her resolve.

”You have a big sword,” Seraphina countered flawlessly, offering him a sleepy, confident blink. ”If the Emperor gets mad, you can just glare at him. You’re scarier.”

A choked, muffled sound escaped Sir Gallahan’s lips.

He was weeping silent tears of pure, knightly devotion in the corner.

Kaelus let out a long breath.

He looked up, his violet eyes locking onto Sir Lucas.

”You heard the Lady,” Kaelus commanded, his voice ringing with absolute, unyielding authority.

”Your Grace?” Lucas stammered, unsure if he was actually supposed to commit treason based on a six-year-old’s economic policy.

”Empty the Count’s vaults,” Kaelus ordered. ”Liquidate the estate’s immediate treasury. Send riders to the neighboring orphanages and deliver an endowment capable of sustaining them for the next decade. Find the families of those the Count executed or starved, and compensate them with gold. Weigh it out. Make it generous.”

”B-but the Imperial Auditors...” Lucas began.

”If the Auditors have a complaint regarding the missing funds,” Kaelus said, a terrifying, dark smile curving his lips, ”tell them they are welcome to travel to the Northern Bastion and audit the edge of my blade.”

”Yes, Your Grace!” Lucas roared, his chest swelling with pride.

This was the Archduke they would die for, a man who defied gods and emperors on a whim.

Seraphina smiled, a bright, genuine smile that reached her dark eyes.

She let go of his lapel and leaned her head against his chest. ”Thank you, Papa Duke.”

”Do not thank me yet,” Kaelus muttered, adjusting her ribbon. ”I’m going to have to murder at least three bureaucrats to fix the paperwork for this.”

But Seraphina wasn’t listening to the logistics.

Her eyes were fixed on the ghost by the fireplace.

When Kaelus had issued the order, the spiritual atmosphere in the room shifted.

The heavy, suffocating gray fog that had clung to the ceiling like a disease began to unravel.

It didn’t just fade; it shattered like brittle glass, dissolving into a shower of warm, golden light that only Seraphina could see.

Howard, the steward, stood up straight.

The spectral blood stopped flowing from his neck.

The agonizing sorrow that had twisted his features smoothed out, replaced by a peaceful look.

He looked at the terrifying monster in the chair, and then he looked directly at the tiny girl sitting on his lap.

The ghost placed his right hand over his heart and bowed.

It was a deep, formal, incredibly respectful bow, the kind a servant gives not to a master, but to a savior.

As he rose from the bow, Howard’s form began to turn into golden dust, floating upward like embers from a warm fire, until he completely disappeared into the ether, finally moving on to the afterlife.

And it wasn’t just him.

Through the tall glass windows, Seraphina watched as the grasping, skeletal hands in the hedges turned to mist.

The weeping women on the balconies smiled and faded into the morning breeze.

The crushing, heavy aura of death and sin that had made her sick the day before was entirely purged.

For the first time since she had crossed the gates, the sunlight filtering into the room actually felt warm on her skin.
