Immortality by Inheriting Friends' Legacies

Chapter 67: Chapter 67: Your Friend Wuhuan Has Died!

Lu Qingluo had initially intended to tell Yun Qing that the Ascension Association backed the Wu Family Ancestor. However, upon further thought, she worried that if Yun Qing knew about the ancestor’s patron, he might not dare to strike.

Without thoroughly eliminating the Wu Family Ancestor, relying solely on the Yun Family’s name would only deter those Martial Artists who killed for money. If the Wu Family Ancestor ever lost his patience and struck personally, she and Fang Xu still wouldn’t be able to fend him off.

Surely the Ascension Association wouldn’t go to war with the mighty Yun Family, the Lord of Huangzhou, over a worthless, aging registered disciple?

Harboring this selfish motive, Lu Qingluo led Yun Qing directly to the Wu Family Manor.

”Is this it?” Yun Qing sat on his horse, quietly observing the estate before him.

Lu Qingluo nodded and immediately prepared to dismount to accompany him inside.

”There’s no need for the trouble, Miss Lu. I’ll be right back,” Yun Qing said. His body suddenly leaped into the air, flying straight to the front gates of the Wu Family Manor.

SWISH!

The longsword at his waist left its sheath, and a streak of sword aura instantly sliced open the tightly shut gates before him!

”Who dares to—”

”So noisy!”

Yun Qing’s voice echoed from within the courtyard. A moment later, he walked back out through the gates, flicked the blood off his longsword, and returned it to its scabbard.

”Let’s go,” Yun Qing said calmly after vaulting back onto his horse.

”He’s dead?” Lu Qingluo asked in disbelief.

Yun Qing smiled faintly. ”What? As a majestic Seventh Realm Martial Master, would I need to exchange blows to kill an old geezer merely in the Third Realm?”

Lu Qingluo opened her mouth but found herself at a loss for words.

Just as Yun Qing was about to rein in his horse and leave, he suddenly frowned, catching a glimpse of a figure flashing past outside the Wu Family Manor. ”Looks like a Golden Scale Guard...”

”Let’s go. Take me to see this Fang Xu.” Paying no mind to the figure, Yun Qing urged his horse forward.

Lu Qingluo followed closely behind.

At the Fenglin Town Government Office.

Listening to the subordinate’s report, Li Xun’s face filled with astonishment. ”Are you sure it’s that reckless fool?”

The Golden Scale Guard knelt on one knee and cupped his hands. ”Reporting to the Crown Prince, this subordinate has seen Young Master Yun before. I am certain it is him.”

”Was that old man from the Wu family really killed in a single strike by Yun Qing?” Li Xun asked, his expression turning solemn.

”Well... Young Master Yun indeed killed Wuhuan with a single stroke of his sword,” the Golden Scale Guard replied with some trepidation.

Li Xun had intended to kill Wuhuan, but considering the Ascension Association backing him, he had never dared to make a move. That was why he had ordered people to keep an eye on the Wu family while sending others to probe the Ascension Association’s bottom line.

He never expected this reckless fool to just show up in Fenglin Town and kill the man outright!

If Steward Xu placed the blame for this, even Yun Tianming would be helpless. He would have no choice but to tie up his only son and deliver him to the Ascension Association to be beaten or killed at their discretion!

”Go! Send someone to bring Yun Qing to me!” Li Xun ordered angrily.

Yun Qing was famous for his recklessness, and Li Xun was nursing a major headache right now. If a conflict broke out between the Ascension Association and the Yun Family, and the royal family tried to intervene, the Association might not give them face, which would damage royal prestige. But if they didn’t intervene and just let the Ascension Association kill Yun Qing, Yun Tianming would undoubtedly harbor resentment against the royal family.

Everything had been fine! Why did this reckless fool from the Yun Family have to come running to Fenglin Town!? Li Xun couldn’t understand it at all.

In Fang Xu’s small courtyard.

While Fang Xu was cultivating, a virtual light screen suddenly popped up in front of him.

[Your friend Wuhuan has died. As his friend, you may randomly inherit one of Wuhuan’s three legacies.]

Legacy One: [Red Legacy: Wu Family Assets (equivalent to 48,000 taels of gold)] Inheriting this carries great risk. The Wu family has a powerful patron, and Wuhuan was killed by a member of the Yun Family. Rashly seizing these assets will make you a target for various factions.

Legacy Two: [White Legacy: Wuhuan’s Alchemy Inheritance Manual] Inheriting this carries minor risk. This alchemy inheritance was casually passed down to Wuhuan by Steward Xu Changqing of the Ascension Association years ago. It records some introductory knowledge of the Alchemy Dao. Wuhuan treasured it dearly, yet despite spending half his life studying it, he only comprehended thirty percent of its contents.

Legacy Three: [White Legacy: 55 Life Attribute points] Inheriting this carries no risk, but requires touching Wuhuan’s corpse.

”Wuhuan is dead!?”

Looking at the light screen before him, Fang Xu was shocked at first, but then his face erupted in joy! According to the screen, Wuhuan had been killed by someone from the Yun Family. That meant his senior sister, Lu Qingluo, had likely returned and brought a member of the Yun Family with her.

”Good riddance!” he thought. With the old geezer dead, the current crisis was finally resolved for the time being.

Rubbing his hands together in excitement, Fang Xu immediately clicked to inherit.

Of Wuhuan’s three legacies, he absolutely couldn’t touch Legacy One. Just as the system stated, the Wu family had operated in Fenglin Town for many years and had deep ties to various factions. Once news of Wuhuan’s death spread, those factions would undoubtedly swarm like starving wolves catching the scent of blood, lunging in to swallow the Wu family’s assets whole.

More importantly, since the Yun Family had made a move, there was a high chance they would conveniently swallow up the Wu family’s assets as well. No matter what happened, this pie in the sky would never fall into his lap.

Excluding Legacy One, the remaining two were both quite good. The light screen in front of him rolled rapidly before slowly coming to a stop on Legacy Two.

[Congratulations! You have obtained Wuhuan’s Legacy Two: Alchemy Inheritance Manual.]

[The Alchemy Inheritance Manual is located in the Alchemy Room of the Wu Family Manor’s secondary courtyard. It will be relatively safe for the host to retrieve it at 9 p.m.]

The system was surprisingly considerate, even giving Fang Xu a prompt to retrieve it at the safest time.

Keeping this in mind, Fang Xu slowly walked out into the courtyard. He watered and weeded the sprouted vegetable patch, keeping busy until evening.

At 7 p.m., Lu Qingluo arrived at the small courtyard with Yun Qing.

Sizing up the emaciated Fang Xu before him, Yun Qing frowned. ”You are Fang Xu?”

Having already learned Yun Qing’s identity from Lu Qingluo, Fang Xu cupped his hands slightly. ”Fang Xu greets Young Master Yun.”

”The vitality and blood in your body are nearly depleted. What on earth did you go through?” Yun Qing asked curiously.

Fang Xu cupped his hands again. ”It is a long story. Please take a seat, Young Master Yun.”

After inviting him to sit, Lu Qingluo glanced at the sky and said to Fang Xu, ”I’m going to town to buy some food. We’ve been traveling for days and haven’t had a proper meal.”

”Remember to bring back a jug of Maple Brew!” Yun Qing called out. Although Fenglin Town’s Maple Brew couldn’t be considered a top-tier wine in Great Yu, it was still somewhat famous.

”Why did my sister suddenly decide to go to the Tilan Mountain ruins?” Yun Qing asked, staring intently at Fang Xu.

The two had grown up together, so he knew his sister’s temperament very well. If it were him, he might make such a decision on impulse, but his sister Yun Wan definitely would not. Unlike his own reckless nature, she was gentle and always composed in her actions. It was entirely impossible for her to rashly run off to the Tilan Mountain ruins.

Fang Xu didn’t know how to answer for a moment. Faking her death to escape had been his idea, and only he and Yun Wan knew about it. If Yun Qing knew that he had been the one scheming behind the scenes—ultimately leading his sister into danger—he would probably kill him on the spot.

But he had to give the Yun Family an explanation, as he was, after all, the last person to have seen Yun Wan.
