The Divergence

The rhythmic thump of helicopter blades echoed across the military installation as dawn painted the eastern horizon in muted shades of orange and gold.

The helicopter settled onto the landing pad with practiced precision, its rotors whipping the morning air into powerful gusts that sent loose dust skittering across the concrete.

Before the engines had even fully idled, four soldiers stepped down first.

They immediately formed around the passenger door.

An umbrella unfolded.

Brigadier General Violetta stepped onto the tarmac beneath its shade.

The black fabric shielded her flawless features from the early morning sunlight while the wind tugged gently at the hem of her elegant black dress.

Strands of her lavender hair danced around her shoulders before settling again as she began walking toward the administration building.

The four soldiers followed in quiet formation.

None looked uncomfortable escorting a vampire.

If anything, they appeared accustomed to it.

Waiting outside the entrance stood a Major General in dress uniform, accompanied by a colonel and several staff officers.

The Major General smiled warmly.

”General Violetta.”

Violetta inclined her head politely.

”General.”

They shook hands.

”I appreciate you making the trip.”

”It was on my way.”

The Major General chuckled softly.

”I somehow doubt that.”

”I had business nearby.”

”You always do.”

There was familiarity in their exchange.

Professional.

Comfortable.

Neither mentioned the umbrella.

Neither mentioned the fact she could not stand in the sunlight unaided.

Those facts simply... were.

”I trust everything has gone smoothly?” Violetta asked.

The Major General nodded.

”As smoothly as possible under the circumstances.”

”No incidents?”

”None.”

”No security concerns?”

”None worth mentioning.”

She gave a satisfied nod.

”Excellent.”

He gestured toward the entrance.

”Shall we?”

They walked through the building together.

The corridors bustled with activity despite the early hour.

Personnel saluted as Violetta passed.

She returned each salute without missing a step.

No hesitation.

No awkwardness.

Just routine.

The Major General glanced toward her.

”I’ve received your recommendation regarding expanded blood clinic security.”

”I expected as much.”

”It has support.”

”I’m pleased.”

”So far.”

”So far is enough.”

He laughed quietly.

”You haven’t changed.”

”I hope not.”

His expression softened.

”I mean that as a compliment.”

”I accepted it as one.”

After several turns they reached a quieter wing of the facility.

Two military police stood outside a reinforced door.

One saluted sharply.

”Sir.”

The Major General nodded.

”At ease.”

He looked toward Violetta.

”She’s been cooperative throughout.”

”I expected nothing less.”

”No escape attempts.”

”No violent incidents.”

”No complaints from the research teams.”

Violetta smiled faintly.

”That last point surprises me.”

”It shouldn’t.”

He returned the smile.

”She mostly complained about being bored.”

”That sounds considerably more familiar.”

One guard unlocked the door.

The room beyond resembled a comfortable apartment far more than any detention cell.

A bookshelf occupied one wall.

A television sat opposite an upholstered couch.

There was a small dining table, a neatly made bed, several potted plants near the windows that remained tightly shuttered, and stacks of completed books arranged beside the couch.

Lying across that couch was a red-haired vampire.

Evangeline stared blankly at the ceiling.

One leg dangled lazily over the armrest while a book rested upside down against her stomach.

She didn’t immediately look toward the door.

Instead...

Her nose twitched.

Her crimson eyes widened.

A delighted smile spread across her face.

She sat upright in an instant.

”Oh!”

She practically sprang from the couch.

Crossing the room in moments, she stopped in front of Violetta with obvious excitement.

”You smell like another vampire.”

”I am.”

”I know.”

Evangeline beamed.

”I was making sure.”

She folded her arms dramatically.

”I’ve been bored beyond belief.”

”I’ve heard.”

”They made me answer questions.”

”I’ve heard.”

”They took blood.”

”I’ve read the reports.”

”They asked me how I felt.”

”I imagine they did.”

”They asked again.”

”They likely wished to verify consistency.”

”They asked if I wanted to bite anyone.”

Violetta raised an eyebrow.

”And?”

”I said no.”

A brief pause.

”Most of the time.”

The corner of Violetta’s mouth lifted.

”I appreciate your honesty.”

Evangeline leaned closer hopefully.

”...Can we go now?”

”Yes.”

The single word seemed to brighten the room.

”Oh, thank goodness.”

”I have several documents to sign first.”

”I’ll wait.”

”You’ve demonstrated remarkable patience already.”

”I’ve had lots of practice.”

The Major General handed over a folder.

Inside were neatly arranged forms documenting Evangeline’s voluntary participation in military research, the completion of scheduled evaluations, and authorization ending her stay at the facility.

Violetta read each page carefully.

She signed where required.

The Major General added his own signature.

A final stamp landed firmly upon the paperwork.

He closed the folder.

”She’s officially released.”

”Thank you.”

”Our researchers appreciate everything she contributed.”

Evangeline tilted her head.

”They really liked my blood.”

”They found it scientifically valuable.”

”I found them repetitive.”

The Major General laughed.

”I won’t argue with that.”

Violetta looked toward Evangeline.

”Gather anything you’d like to bring.”

”I already did.”

She picked up a small travel bag resting beside the couch.

”I’ve been ready since yesterday.”

”Efficient.”

”I was optimistic.”

The guard stepped aside.

Evangeline practically floated through the doorway.

The group retraced their path through the corridors.

Personnel glanced curiously toward the two vampires but otherwise continued about their duties.

Outside, umbrellas were already waiting.

The morning sun had climbed higher.

Violetta accepted hers without comment.

Another was opened over Evangeline.

She looked upward.

”I’ve almost forgotten what daylight looks like.”

”You’ll remember.”

”I’d rather not.”

Together they crossed the landing pad.

The helicopter rotors began turning faster.

Wind swept across the concrete, pulling at their dresses once again.

The soldiers climbed aboard first.

Violetta followed.

Evangeline eagerly climbed in after her.

The doors shut.

The helicopter lifted smoothly into the brightening sky.

Only when the base had begun shrinking beneath them did Evangeline exhale dramatically.

”I thought they’d never let me leave.”

”They always intended to.”

”It still took forever.”

”It took six days.”

”It felt like six months.”

Violetta allowed herself a quiet smile.

”I’ve reviewed every report.”

”Oh?”

”You were polite.”

”I was.”

”Cooperative.”

”I was.”

”Patient.”

”I was trying.”

”You also complained daily.”

”I absolutely did.”

She crossed her arms.

”They kept asking if I felt different after drinking blood.”

”You answered.”

”I answered every time.”

”They were collecting longitudinal data.”

”They could have collected it faster.”

”You’ve contributed a considerable amount to our understanding.”

Evangeline sighed theatrically.

”I know.”

After a moment she smiled again.

”So...”

Violetta looked toward her.

”So?”

”Where exactly are we going?”

”Oakridge.”

”The city on everyone’s reports?”

”The same.”

”The dangerous one?”

”The most volatile one.”

Evangeline became noticeably more interested.

”And why are we going there?”

Violetta looked out across the clouds before answering.

”Because there are eight vampires there.”

Evangeline blinked.

”...Eight?”

”Confirmed.”

”I thought there were usually only one or two.”

”There usually are.”

She folded her hands neatly in her lap.

”They’ve remained together.”

”For a week?”

”Yes.”

”Oh...”

A grin slowly spread across Evangeline’s face.

”So...”

She leaned forward excitedly.

”We’re going to meet them?”

Violetta met her eyes.

”Yes.”

For perhaps the first time since her transformation, Evangeline’s excitement wasn’t directed at freedom.

It was directed at something far more instinctive.

Meeting others who, like herself, belonged to the same new world.

The steady rhythm of the helicopter filled the cabin.

Clouds drifted beneath them in an endless sea of white as morning sunlight illuminated the horizon outside.

Beneath the shade of the aircraft, neither vampire paid it much attention.

Evangeline had already leaned back into her seat, happily watching the world pass beneath them after nearly a week confined inside a military installation.

Across from her, Violetta reached toward the empty seat beside her.

A rugged military tablet rested there.

She unlocked it with a fingerprint, followed by a numerical authorization code.

A warning immediately appeared across the display.

UNITED SOVEREIGNTIES DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE

CLASSIFICATION: TOP SECRET

ACCESS RESTRICTED TO AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL

She tapped the confirmation.

A document opened.

Hundreds of pages.

Compiled over the previous week.

Scientists.

Doctors.

Psychologists.

Military analysts.

Field reports.

Interview transcripts.

Every piece of information gathered concerning one of the two species created by the Divergence.

She quietly began reading.

SPECIES DESIGNATION: VAMPIRE

Classification: Nocturnal Hematophagous Humanoid.

Origin: The Divergence Event.

Date of Emergence: Six days prior.

The document began plainly.

”Vampires constitute one of the two confirmed novel human-derived species resulting from the phenomenon designated the Divergence.”

”Transformation appears complete and irreversible.”

”All confirmed vampires are biologically female regardless of the sex of the individual prior to transformation.”

”Current estimates indicate fewer than one hundred thousand confirmed vampires nationally.”

The following section detailed physical appearance.

”Morphological consistency is unusually high.”

”Despite considerable variation in ethnicity, skin tone, hair color, eye coloration, facial structure, and body proportions, all observed subjects meet exceptionally high standards of human attractiveness.”

”No significant congenital defects have been documented.”

”Hair exhibits increased density, resilience, and natural luster.”

”Eyelashes and eyebrows are noticeably fuller than human averages.”

”Dermal imperfections, including scars, acne, blemishes, and age-related deterioration, have not been observed.”

”Apparent biological age ranges between approximately eighteen and twenty five years.”

”Average height is approximately five feet.”

”No confirmed individual exceeds five feet two inches.”

Evangeline glanced over.

”They measured everything.”

”They did.”

”They even counted my eyelashes.”

”I noticed.”

”They’re very thorough.”

”They’re scientists.”

”I know.”

She folded her arms.

”It was still strange.”

Violetta continued.

The section regarding vision interested military analysts considerably.

”Pupils are absent.”

”The iris occupies the entire visible ocular surface.”

”Retinal reflection is comparable to felids, producing significant eyeshine when exposed to light.”

”Visual acuity exceeds human norms.”

”Subjects demonstrate unrestricted navigation in environments possessing negligible or zero visible illumination.”

”Night operations should assume vampires possess effectively unimpaired vision.”

Hearing.

”Auditory sensitivity significantly exceeds baseline human capability.”

”Whispered conversation may be perceived through multiple interior walls depending upon surrounding noise.”

”Subjects consistently identified heartbeats at close range.”

”Changes in respiratory rhythm, emotional stress, and distant movement are regularly detected.”

Smell.

The report became noticeably longer.

”Olfactory capability represents one of the species’ greatest sensory adaptations.”

”Individual humans produce distinguishable scent profiles.”

”Subjects consistently identified familiar individuals solely through scent.”

”Fresh blood is detectable across substantial distances depending upon environmental conditions.”

”Emotional state frequently correlates with measurable alterations in body odor.”

”Individual vampires also possess unique naturally occurring scent signatures.”

Violetta looked toward Evangeline.

”Black cherries.”

”And red wine.”

”You’ve read your file.”

”I’ve read everyone’s.”

Evangeline smiled.

”What do you smell like?”

”Lilac.”

”And rain.”

”I suppose that’s accurate.”

The next section summarized physical capability.

”Average muscular output is estimated at approximately eight times that of healthy adult humans.”

”Despite relatively small stature and slender body composition, structural integrity far exceeds predicted biological limitations.”

”Subjects demonstrate lifting, striking, and grappling capability inconsistent with observed muscle volume.”

”Maximum recorded running speed exceeds one hundred miles per hour during sustained pursuit.”

”Short-distance acceleration appears substantially higher.”

”Visual tracking by unenhanced human observers frequently fails during rapid movement, producing the appearance of brief disappearances or motion blur.”

Evangeline grinned.

”I liked that test.”

”The treadmill?”

”They kept making it faster.”

”You broke it.”

”It broke itself.”

”Skeletal durability substantially exceeds human expectations.”

”Ballistic testing indicates conventional handgun ammunition possesses limited immediate stopping capability.”

”Most rifle calibers produce localized tissue disruption without catastrophic incapacitation.”

”Blunt force trauma inflicted by humans demonstrates negligible effectiveness.”

”Subjects routinely tolerate falls and impacts incompatible with human survival.”

”Silver remains the only consistently effective material presently identified beyond complete destruction of the brain or heart.”

Violetta scrolled.

The next section carried numerous highlighted annotations.

HEMATOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS

”Vampire blood demonstrates extraordinary regenerative properties when ingested by living humans.”

”Current evidence indicates restoration of severe traumatic injuries, extensive blood loss, organ damage, fractures, and numerous pathological conditions.”

”No confirmed regeneration has occurred following complete biological death.”

”Medical applications remain under investigation.”

”Current strategic assessments identify access to vampire blood as one of the primary incentives supporting continued governmental integration efforts.”

She nodded slightly.

That conclusion had appeared in nearly every briefing she’d attended.

A single cooperative vampire could save hundreds of lives.

It fundamentally altered the government’s calculations.

The document changed sections.

PSYCHOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS

Violetta slowed.

This interested her far more than physiology.

”Transformation produces measurable psychological alteration while preserving identity, autobiographical memory, personality traits, learned behavior, and emotional attachment.”

”Subjects consistently recognize themselves as fundamentally the same individual.”

”However...”

She continued reading.

”Decision-making demonstrates significantly increased rational weighting.”

”Impulsive behavior decreases.”

”Long-term consequences receive greater consideration.”

”Observed subjects display reduced willingness to engage in unnecessary personal risk.”

”Actions appear increasingly outcome-oriented.”

Evangeline looked over again.

”I still feel like me.”

”You are.”

”I just...”

She searched for the words.

”...think differently.”

Violetta nodded.

”So does every other vampire interviewed.”

The next paragraph was underlined.

”Self-preservation represents one of the strongest consistently observed behavioral changes.”

”Subjects demonstrate survival prioritization exceeding that observed within baseline human populations and most documented terrestrial animal species.”

”Retreat, avoidance, and calculated disengagement occur frequently when survival probability decreases.”

”Conversely...”

”When escape is unavailable and an individual is assessed as an active lethal threat, observed decision weighting overwhelmingly favors immediate neutralization through lethal force.”

Violetta quietly continued.

A psychologist’s commentary followed.

”This behavior should not immediately be interpreted as increased aggression.”

”Humans encountering armed lethal threats similarly demonstrate willingness to employ lethal force when capable.”

”Interview data suggests vampires rapidly categorize certain individuals as existential threats.”

”Once categorized, responses become comparable to a human defending themselves against an armed assailant.”

”The primary distinction lies in decisiveness rather than morality.”

Violetta found herself agreeing.

Every report she’d read followed the same pattern.

The vampire had not wanted violence.

The vampire had recognized a threat.

The threat had died.

Another section.

”Fear responses remain present.”

”However, panic behavior decreases significantly.”

”Subjects maintain coherent planning even under immediate threat.”

”Emotional regulation appears enhanced without significant emotional suppression.”

”Subjects continue experiencing affection, humor, embarrassment, sadness, curiosity, and companionship.”

”These emotions appear less likely to interfere with immediate survival decisions.”

She continued scrolling.

The next observation was tentative.

”Across interviews, subjects repeatedly describe a subtle alteration in perception difficult to articulate.”

”Reported descriptions include:”

”The world feels slightly distant.”

”Reality feels quieter.”

”Everything feels faintly unreal.”

”People resemble actors upon a stage.”

”Life feels as though one is observing it through perfectly clear glass.”

”Importantly...”

”No subject described significant detachment, hallucinations, impaired judgment, or inability to distinguish reality from imagination.”

”Current interpretation suggests a mild, persistent alteration in emotional immediacy rather than pathological dissociation.”

Evangeline stared thoughtfully out the window.

”...That one.”

Violetta looked up.

”The world?”

She nodded.

”I couldn’t explain it.”

”Neither could anyone else.”

”It still matters.”

”It does.”

Evangeline rested her chin in her hand.

”It isn’t that people aren’t real.”

”No.”

”It just...”

She frowned.

”...feels slightly further away.”

Violetta quietly closed the tablet for a moment.

”I know.”

For several seconds, neither spoke.

The helicopter continued steadily toward Oakridge.

Far ahead lay a city balancing on the edge of coexistence.

And somewhere within it...

Eight other vampires.

Perhaps they, too, had struggled to explain the strange feeling that every interviewed vampire had described.

Not enough to make the world seem false.

Only enough to remind them that they no longer experienced it quite the way humans did.

Violetta,

Evangeline,
