Parallel World Light Novelist

Chapter 64: Chapter 64: The Sixth Chapter Hits and Everything Suddenly Hurts

Originally, the readers had gradually grown accustomed to the leisurely, almost mundane pace of Anohana.

Most people who read for pleasure don’t sit down to perform a deep structural analysis of the text; to them, it is a simple binary: either the story is captivating, or it isn’t.

For the first five Chapters, Anohana had essentially been a series of low-stakes daily interactions between the protagonist, and the heroine, Menma, peppered with slow-burn character beats for the supporting cast.

While Shiori’s execution of these moments was undeniably polished, and her character work was, as always, top-tier, the narrative lacked a definitive ”explosive” hook.

Among the fans who had followed her from Blue Spring Ride, the reaction was mixed. Some had dropped the series in disappointment, others treated it like a ”tasteless but necessary” meal they forced themselves to finish out of habit, and only a small niche truly savored the gentle atmosphere and Menma’s adorable antics.

Within the wider light novel industry of Minamijo, the consensus was forming that this was a sophomore slump, a mediocre follow-up to a lucky hit. It was a common phenomenon; very few authors could strike gold twice in a row. Because Shiori was a newcomer, the ”one-hit wonder” label was being tossed around more and more by critics and jealous rivals alike to tear her down.

But everything changed the moment the sixth Chapter was published.

The following day, when the performance report arrived at the Crimson Maple Literature editorial department, the data told a shocking new story.

Anohana had secured 6,132 reader votes, skyrocketing to 9th place in the rankings. Its quality rating had climbed to 8.6, placing it 6th overall in the entire magazine. In terms of popularity, the series had leaped four spots in a single issue, while its quality ranking had also jumped.

Looking back at the data from the first five issues, it was clear that readers never actually thought the book was bad, the rating had consistently hovered around 8.4, but very few felt a burning passion for it. That was the reason for its previous 13th-place finish in votes. However, serialized fiction is a volatile beast; the moment a single Chapter touches the readers’ heartstrings, their support manifests instantly and tangibly.

Even readers who usually reserved their primary vote for a different series couldn’t ignore Anohana now. After all, once you’ve bought the magazine, you might as well read everything in it to get your money’s worth.

In the sixth Chapter, while Jintan remained a relatively understated lead, the characterization of Yukiatsu was nothing short of transformative. The author depicted a crushing, hollow despair, the agony of a child who had committed a mistake that could never be undone, and who had spent years performing a silent, desperate penance that brought him no peace.

His unrequited love for Menma, his inability to move on, and his searing jealousy of Jintan, who was ”lucky” enough to have a mental breakdown and see her again, left the audience in absolute shambles.

This was the true nature of a slow-burn story.

Haruto had spent thousands of words meticulously building the characters and setting the stage specifically so that when the emotional payoff finally arrived, it would hit with the force of a tidal wave.

The more the readers had been annoyed by the arrogant, condescending Yukiatsu in the beginning, the more profound their pity for him was now.

The official Crimson Maple website was a storm of activity.

”Who was the one saying Shiori-sensei lost her touch? I’m literally sitting here in tears,” one user posted.

”Chapter six was incredible. I’d been treating this as a light, fluffy daily life story... I never expected to be emotionally blindsided like this.”

”Honestly, Yukiatsu is a more compelling and three-dimensional character than the lead right now! This is the first time I’ve seen a ’cross-dresser’ in a story and didn’t feel like laughing. That childhood trauma is written so vividly it’s haunting.”

”I finally see what this story is about. Everyone’s heart is frozen in time because of Menma’s death. The plot is about Jintan and Menma slowly thawing the icy knots in their friends’ souls.”

”I used to hate Yukiatsu, but now I’m dying to see Chapter seven just to see him find some closure. This transition was flawless.”

With a single Chapter, Anohana’s reputation had undergone a radical shift. Ninth place was a respectable middle-tier ranking, safely away from the ”axe” zone. For a rookie on his second series, it was a performance that silenced many of his doubters.

---

Night fell over Yukino’s apartment.

After finishing the drafts for Chapters nine and ten that Haruto had just handed over, Yukino fell into a deep, pensive silence.

Haruto was equally quiet, though for a different reason.

He had just been utterly dismantled in a game of True Iron Soul by Reina.

She had used her favorite character to execute a flawless juggle combo. Haruto had made one tiny mistake at the start of the round and was launched into the air, where he remained until his health bar hit zero. He hadn’t even touched the ground.

”You’re... actually not bad,” Haruto said, taking a sip of tea and trying to maintain a stoic, unaffected expression.

”Just ’not bad’?”

Reina’s usually cold, detached face broke into a rare, crescent-moon smile. ”Our record for this session is 13 to 8 in my favor. Just admit it, Haruto. Even in the game you claim to be best at, you’re no longer my match.”

”Victory and defeat are ordinary things for a warrior. I’ve just been off my game lately,” Haruto grumbled. He didn’t mind her beating him in the rankings, but losing at video games was a blow to his pride that stung surprisingly hard.

”If someone threw you into a furnace right now, your whole body would turn to ash, but your mouth would come out perfectly intact,” she teased. ”It’s just that stubborn.”

Since the day of the convention, Reina had stopped acting like a rigid, perfect student whenever she was around the two of them.

She joked, she bantered, and she showed a competitive side that no one at Minamijo Third High School would ever believe existed.

She had always been brilliant; it was just that her excellence had isolated her.

Relationship dynamics are built through the slow accumulation of time, and after six months of meeting twice a week, her guard had finally vanished.

”Haruto... these Chapters you gave me today. They are genuinely beautiful,” Yukino said, her voice carrying a heavy note of regret as she looked at him.

Reina’s smile faded instantly, her expression turning serious. The jump in Anohana’s rankings was a warning. Even though her own series, Star Sea was comfortably in 6th place and still climbing, she felt the pressure of a rival catching up. Beneath her relaxed facade, she was more alert than ever.

”Then why the long face?” Haruto asked, looking at his editor.

”Because... if you had written with this level of intensity from Chapter one, I think this story would have set the entire region on fire,” Yukino sighed.

That was her fear. The story had hit its stride, but it had taken too long to get there. The early slow-burn had capped the potential fan base. Even if the quality was sky-high now, the series only had fourteen Chapters in total. By the time the hype peaked around Chapter ten or eleven, the story would be only two weeks away from its finale. It was a fatal blow to its commercial momentum. It was simply too short and too slow.

Yukino looked at Haruto’s bright, carefree eyes and felt a knot of anxiety in her chest.

As his friend, she was praying for a miracle, a surge that would somehow push him into the top four of the magazine Crimson Maple. She desperately wanted him to avoid the three-year loyalty contract that would lock his future to a regional publisher. If he signed that, his immense talent would be confined to the Minamijo suburbs, hidden away from the national stage.

Even the most exquisite wine cannot find a buyer if it is hidden at the very end of a very deep alley.
