The Comeback of the Cannon-Fodder Supporting Actress

Chapter 523: Chapter 514: The Stepmother Who Refused to Be a Stepping Stone (2)

Anning was speechless after reviewing Geng Anning’s memories.

People like Li Zhifang and Wang Baozhu were honestly so disgusting it made one sick.

Geng Anning also recalled those painful events.

She covered her face and cried, ”I really hate so deeply. She, Wang Baozhu, decided to run away, and after she left, I took care of her whole family, tended to her children so well, but when she came back, those three ingrates didn’t appreciate my care at all. Instead, they were so close to their biological mother, and turned to bite me at the first opportunity.”

The more she spoke, the louder Geng Anning cried, ”What wrong did my sons and daughter do? What did I do wrong? They treated us like stepping stones, and there was my mother-in-law, she was truly kind-hearted, but was driven to death by that shameless couple. I hate them, I... I no longer care about my reputation being tarnished, I want everyone to remember my kindness. I want my children to lead comfortable lives, to have no unspoken grievances, and as for those three ingrates, I am done teaching them with all my heart, let them be whatever they want to be.”

Anning sighed, ”Okay, I will help you do all I can. Do you have any other wishes?”

Anning actually pitied Geng Anning quite a bit; she was a kind and sincere woman who didn’t deserve such a fate.

”That’s it, as long as they receive their comeuppance, as long as my children’s reputation isn’t damaged by association, as long as my mother-in-law isn’t frozen to death, I... I’ll be content.”

Geng Anning looked at Anning with hopeful eyes, ”You, help me please.”

”As you wish.”

Anning waved her hand to open the space-time passage, and then she stepped into that particular time and space.

When Anning woke up, she heard a noisy commotion outside.

She opened her eyes and saw wooden beams overhead. Looking around, she saw many things characteristic of the era: an enamel basin printed with floral patterns, a wooden washstand, a solid wood table, and what looked to be a clean cement floor.

Seeing these, Anning’s memories refreshed.

She knew she had arrived on the day Geng Anning was to marry Li Zhifang; the noise outside was probably the clamor of guests at the wedding banquet.

Anning rubbed her temples, stood up, took a kettle, and poured herself a cup of water. As she drank, she recalled the plot.

In the memories of the original body, this wedding was anything but perfect.

Anning took a turn around the room and found a mirror to look into.

Honestly, this body was pretty attractive: slender, with a nice face shape, eyebrows, eyes, nose, and mouth; all were quite fetching. However, since her husband had died early, she had to struggle alone with three children in poverty, which required heavy labor. Over time, this naturally made her look haggard and much older.

If she took good care of herself, her skin could become fairer and more delicate, truly transforming her into a delicate beauty.

But for now, Anning was not interested in nurturing her appearance. She was more concerned with her health and future plans.

Anning put down the mirror and was about to go in search of something to eat, her stomach growling with hunger, when the door was pushed open.

A woman in her thirties entered, wearing the most typical attire of rural women of the time: a light blue long-sleeved blouse buttoned at the front and dark, generously cut trousers, with square black cloth shoes on her feet, revealing the green socks inside.

Most importantly, around her neck was tied a dark blue kerchief, a popular accessory for rural women in the early eighties, which could be tied around the neck or worn on the head.

She came in and smiled at Anning, ”Hungry, right? Hurry up and have something to eat.”

Anning was indeed hungry and didn’t bother being polite, grabbing the cake to eat.

The woman also considerately poured a cup of warm water for Anning and handed it over, ”It’s been a messy day, the kids are at my place too, so I didn’t let them come over. I’ll bring the kids over tomorrow, and you... take good care of them.”

After finishing a piece of cake, Anning smiled at the woman, ”I understand, elder sister-in-law.”

Yes, this woman was Li Zhifang’s elder sister-in-law. Her surname was Zhao, and back in her maiden home, she was the second oldest; she had an elder sister and wasn’t given much importance. She didn’t have a proper married name and was always called Zhao Erni at home.

Zhao Erni very much looked the part of the elder sister-in-law, was honest and upright, very filial towards her in-laws, and took great care of her younger brothers. In the Li family, she was quite respected.

Zhao Erni sat down with Anning and whispered, ”From now on, we are one family, no need to talk like strangers. If you have problems, just talk to me. If Zhifang treats you poorly, tell me or your elder brother too. We all used to live in the same village, seeing each other every day, we’re well aware of what kind of person you are. In the future, you’ll be the mother to the kids, and you should keep an eye on them. Don’t say stepmothers can’t discipline; our family doesn’t believe in that.”

Anning chuckled lightly, ”I understand, I’ve thought it through too. The kids are still young; they can be managed. Now that I’ve entered our home, I will definitely take good care of and educate them. As long as they call me ’mother’, I will treat them as my own.”

Zhao Erni looked quite satisfied.

The Li family knew Anning’s character very well. Except for the fact that she came with three children, there wasn’t anything else they were dissatisfied with, at least they were more pleased with her than with Wang Baozhu.

”Rest assured, there are many brothers in our family. When Liu Qi and Liu Ming grow up, we will definitely build houses for them and find them wives,” Zhao Erni patted Anning’s hand and gave her some reassuring words.

Anning believed this.

Aside from Li Zhifang, the other Li brothers were all pretty decent. Since they promised to take care of Liu Qi and Liu Ming, they would definitely deliver.

In her previous life, even after divorcing Li Zhifang, the Li brothers, considering the years Liu Qi and Liu Ming had called them uncle, built houses for the two kids and found them wives.

”I have a clear understanding of what our family brothers are like. Even if my sister-in-law didn’t say this, I would still be at ease.”

Anning wore a smile, looking especially relaxed and happy, ”But now that I’m married into the family, I’m part of the household. Zhifang and I have discussed it; we will work hard to earn money, and we’ll take good care of all six children. In the future, we’ll save money to build houses for the kids.”

Her words were a promise to Zhao Erni that if it was possible not to be a burden on the Li brothers, they wouldn’t be.

Zhao Erni was very satisfied with this response and handed Anning another piece of cake, ”Have some more. These guys go crazy when they drink; it’s this late and they’re still not dispersing.”

”Let them be happy, let them drink.”

Anning showed not the slightest displeasure.

Zhao Erni stood up; she wanted to go outside to have a look, had to keep an eye on the Li brothers to make sure they didn’t get drunk and wild.

She had just stood up when a commotion came from outside.

Anning threw the piece of cake in her hand onto the table and stood by the window to look out.

Zhao Erni followed, and upon seeing the scene, she burst into flames, ”What the hell is the Wang family trying to pull off?”
