Apocalypse: Every Woman I Invest In Makes Me Stronger

Inside the underground air-raid shelter, the stagnant gloom was lit only by the guttering, amber flame of an old kerosene lantern resting on a wooden crate.

Long, distorted shadows stretched up the curved concrete walls like reaching fingers. The heavy smell of damp soil, machine oil, and stale air hung thick in the cramped bunker, weighed down by an oppressive, unyielding gloom.

Maya sat huddled on the edge of a thin cot in the far corner, her knees drawn tightly against her chest and her arms wrapped around her shins. Her face was pale, drawn, and noticeably thinner than it had been a week ago, her hollow cheeks accentuated by the dark circles carved beneath her red, swollen eyes.

Beside her cot sat an open tin of sweetened fruit that Haley and Nina had carried over hours earlier, completely untouched. Even a small bar of dark chocolate~her favorite comfort from the pre-apocalypse days~lay neglected on the rough blanket.

She had barely swallowed a mouthful of water since Penny had vanished five mornings ago.

Every time the reinforced iron door groaned in the draft or gravel shifted in the access tunnel, Maya’s head would snap up with desperate, frantic hope, praying to see her older sister slip through the doorway with her usual energetic grin.

Every single time, the tunnel remained empty, crushing her heart all over again.

”Maya, sweetheart, you have to eat something,” Aria murmured gently, sitting down beside her on the narrow cot.

Aria reached out, her fingers softly brushing a stray lock of dark hair behind the younger girl’s ear, her voice carrying the patient, maternal warmth she always gave to Haley. ”Your sister is tough, Maya. She has those wings and her blades now. She’s probably just pinned down by a patrol or waiting for the heat to die down.”

Aria spoke with deliberate calm, but the tightness around her eyes and the tremor in her knuckles betrayed the lie.

Everyone surviving within this bunker knew what the eastern district had become over the past five days.

The Blackscale Drake had gone completely berserk.

Following some unseen disturbance near the library, the colossal, armored nightmare had been tearing through the commercial avenues like a force of nature. Its deafening, thunderous roars had rolled across the concrete ruins at all hours of the night, rattling the shelter’s heavy ventilation ducts and sending showers of dried mortar falling from the ceiling.

Only yesterday, a flock of panicked mutant crows had fled the beast’s rampage, several of them crashing blindly into the brick structures above the bunker. The horrific, gurgling death screams of the mangled creatures had silenced every whisper in the shelter for three straight hours.

Under such conditions, venturing out to mount a search party was equivalent to stepping directly into an incinerator. Elena and Tessa had forbidden anyone from cracking the outer hatch. They had no idea where the drake was hunting, and stumbling into its path meant instant slaughter.

A few yards away, Victoria sat quietly on an overturned wooden footlocker, her fingers tightly knotting and unraveling the hem of her simple white dress.

For five agonizing days, she had stood vigil beside the cold concrete wall near the shelter’s entrance, staring fixatedly at the invisible coordinates where Ethan usually manifested.

Every morning, she had prayed for the spatial distortion to ripple. Every night, she had retired in bitter disappointment.

The secret she had buried beneath the floorboards of her villa’s basement gnawed at her conscience with the intensity of an open wound. She had barely managed to force down dry biscuits, her mind tormented by endless visions of what might be happening back in Century Skyline.

She had to tell Ethan the truth. She had to confess why she had screamed at him on the landing, and she needed his power to rectify her failure.

Please... just come back alive, Victoria pleaded silently, her eyes stinging as she stared at the floor.

Suddenly, a faint, crystalline chime echoed through the silent bunker.

Victoria’s head snapped upward instantly.

Near the southern corner of the reinforced concrete wall, where the air usually remained cold and dead, a radiant circle of pale azure light flared into existence.

Before anyone could scream or draw a weapon, a familiar, deep voice crackled through the luminous distortion, steady and calm:

”Testing. Can anyone on the other end hear me?”

Aria shot to her feet with such sudden momentum that her knee caught the side of the wooden crate, sending an empty canteen tumbling across the concrete with a loud clatter.

”Ethan?!” Aria cried out, her hands flying to her mouth as her eyes went wide.

Within seconds, the quiet bunker erupted into frantic movement. Elena dropped her medical ledger, Tessa sprang up from the supply crates, and Sofia hurried forward, all of them converging on the corner as the azure light stabilized into an unbroken, glowing pillar.

Maya lifted her chin slowly, a fragile, disbelieving spark igniting in her bloodshot eyes.

The static humming through the link smoothed out, and Ethan’s voice resonated through the stone chamber with absolute clarity.

”Aria? Is that you? Can you hear me?”

Tears instantly spilled over Aria’s eyelashes as she pressed her trembling hands against her chest. ”Ethan! Yes! We can hear you! Oh God, where are you?!”

”Good,” the voice replied, carrying a steadying authority that seemed to lift the suffocating weight from the room. ”Listen to me closely. Penny is with me. She is completely safe, uninjured, and resting.”

For a heartbeat, the shelter was so quiet that the flickering of the kerosene wick was audible.

Then, Maya vaulted off her cot.

”Penny?!” Maya screamed, her voice cracking violently on the syllables as a torrent of hot tears flooded down her thin cheeks.

She sprinted across the concrete floor as though reaching the light would physically pull her sister through the stone, dropping to her knees directly before the glowing anchor. ”Ethan! Is she really okay?! You’re not lying to me, are you?! Where is she?!”

”She’s right here, Maya,” Ethan answered smoothly, a faint warmth coloring his tone. ”I intercepted her near the library five days ago just as she got into trouble. Unfortunately, the Blackscale Drake ambushed the sector right as I arrived. I had to pull her directly into my Survival Space for her own protection.”

He paused for a brief second before continuing:

”The beast locked down the local space, forcing an extended fight. After breaking its perimeter, I had to initiate an emergency jump to an alternate coordinate to throw off its tracking. Between securing the perimeter and recovering my reserves, I couldn’t risk opening a physical portal to your location.”

Maya buried her face in her hands, her shoulders heaving as deep, shuddering sobs wracked her body.

They were not tears of grief. They were the overwhelming, cathartic tears of a sister whose world had just been restored from the brink of the abyss.

Penny hadn’t been torn apart in an alley. She hadn’t been devoured by that scaled dragon or butchered by rogue scavengers. She was alive, fed, and sheltered behind Ethan’s impenetrable spatial barrier.

Maya turned, throwing her arms around little Haley, laughing through her sobs as the young girl patted her back with a bright, understanding smile. Elena let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, resting her forehead against the cool stone wall as the knots in her stomach finally unraveled.

”Thank God...” Aria whispered, wiping her wet cheeks with the sleeve of her cardigan. ”We were losing our minds, Ethan. That monster has been roaring outside for days. We thought... we thought both of you had been cornered.”

Ethan’s voice echoed gently through the node once more.

”The spatial anchor points have unlocked a secure Calling Function through the system. From this moment on, we can maintain direct, real-time voice communication between the shelter, the Survival Space, and my secondary coordinates without needing to risk physical transit through the streets.”

He proceeded to detail the operational boundaries of the communication link, explaining the two-meter proximity requirement and granting permanent voice authorization to Aria, Elena, and Victoria so the channel would remain open on their end.

As his explanation concluded, Elena and Aria stepped closer, testing the link with brief questions about supplies and defense, their previous despair completely replaced by energized relief.

The gloomy tomb of a shelter felt genuinely alive for the first time in nearly a week.

Yet amid the relief, Victoria stood frozen three steps back, her chest rising and falling unevenly.

She had spent six sleepless nights waiting for this exact voice.

Stepping past Maya’s kneeling frame, Victoria leaned toward the glowing column of light, her knuckles white as she gripped the fabric of her skirt, her voice trembling with urgent desperation.

”Ethan...” she pleaded softly, stepping within the transmission radius. ”It’s Victoria. Please, you have to listen to me. What I told you at the villa... about the basement~”

Before the critical words could cross her lips, Ethan’s voice cut in, sharp and hurried:

”Hold that thought, Victoria. I have an active spatial alert triggering on my external feed. We’ll speak shortly.”

Click.

The azure beam abruptly severed. The soft hum vanished, and the pillar of light faded into the damp concrete wall, leaving the corner enveloped in ordinary shadow once more.

Victoria stood frozen in mid-sentence, her lips parted and her hand half-raised in the dim air.

Slowly, her arm fell back to her side, her head drooping as a bitter, helpless sigh slipped past her throat.

She closed her eyes, her fingers tightening around her dress until the seams strained.

Whatever was happening on Ethan’s end, her confession was forced back into the dark once again.
