Apocalypse: Every Woman I Invest In Makes Me Stronger

Ethan stood beside the heavy generator on the second basement level, the air thick with the low thrum of machinery and the faint metallic tang of oil. In his palm, the crystal core pulsed with a pure white light~cool, almost alive. He focused, and the Space Ability answered.

A deep warmth unfurled from the center of his chest, rolling outward through his limbs like slow fire. It gathered at last behind his eyes, where the transparent expanse of his storage space waited. He watched it carefully.

The familiar hundred cubic meters began to stretch. Walls of empty air pushed outward, smooth and steady. The stacked barrels of water, the crates of compressed biscuits, the cans of beef, the folded weapons and the bulk of the truck itself all seemed to shrink relative to the growing void. When the expansion finally settled, the space stood roughly twice as large~two hundred cubic meters of silent, ready capacity.

Ethan exhaled. A quiet thrill moved through him.

Then the knowledge arrived, clean and precise, as if someone had laid a page of instructions directly into his mind.

Space Ability evolved. New derivative skill acquired: Short-Range Retrospective Teleportation.

Effect: Once per day, you may return to any location within fifty meters that you have occupied in the last ten minutes. Requires a clear memory of the place. One-way only at current level.

Teleportation.

His pulse kicked harder. In an apocalypse measured in seconds and blood, the ability to vanish and reappear was the kind of edge that kept people breathing.

He closed his eyes and reached for the most recent clear memory: the staircase landing on the first basement level, the place he had paused earlier on the way to the pool. He pictured the slightly uneven tile underfoot, the long scrape along the concrete wall, the exact angle of the stairwell mouth.

Light flickered behind his eyelids. A brief, weightless dizziness followed.

When the world steadied again, he was standing on that landing.

Exactly where he had intended.

A small, sharp smile touched his mouth. ”It works.”

He started to turn back toward the deeper basement~then the moonlight caught his eye.

It spilled through a narrow high window and lay in broken silver across the still surface of the pool. Debbie floated near the center, long dark hair fanned out around her like spilled ink. Her eyes were closed. The tight lines of worry that had lived on her face since the world ended were gone. For the first time she simply looked... at peace. Human. Free of the constant calculation of how long the food would last or whether the next sound outside would be the last.

Something in Ethan’s chest tightened.

He took one careful step backward, intending to leave the moment undisturbed.

His shoulder brushed the plastic life ring hanging on the railing.

It slipped free, bounced once on the concrete steps, and struck the water with a sharp, echoing splash.

Debbie’s eyes opened at once. She turned toward the staircase.

Their gazes locked.

Silence stretched between them, thick and electric. The only sound was the soft lap of water against the pool’s edge.

A faint color rose along her cheekbones. Then a slow, knowing smile curved her mouth.

”Well,” she said, voice low and carrying easily across the quiet water. ”Look who decided to come back.”

She drifted closer to the edge, resting her forearms on the cool tile. Water beaded along her shoulders and caught the moonlight.

”The great hero who had such important business with the generator.” Her eyes glinted with quiet amusement. ”You left so fast earlier I almost thought the building was on fire. And now here you are again. Changed your mind about the view?”

Ethan felt heat climb the back of his neck, but he kept his voice even. ”I wasn’t watching you. I unlocked a new ability and tested it. The teleport put me here by accident. I forgot you were still swimming.”

Debbie raised one eyebrow. ”Teleportation. That’s a new one.”

”It’s real.” He met her gaze steadily this time. ”Space Ability upgraded. Once a day, short range, only to places I’ve already been. I wanted to confirm the range. That was all.”

She studied him for a long moment, then laughed softly~the sound warm and surprisingly gentle in the empty basement.

”All right. I’ll stop giving you a hard time.” She reached for the towel she had left at the edge and draped it over her shoulders, the motion unhurried. ”But you still haven’t answered the real question. Why the sudden distance earlier? I’m not going to bite.”

Ethan hesitated. The system’s rules pressed against the back of his thoughts like a cold hand~reward multipliers that punished prolonged closeness, drop rates that dropped the moment personal attachment crossed certain invisible lines. He could not explain any of it without sounding insane.

He chose a partial truth and kept his tone calm, almost clinical.

”In a world like this, distance is safer. For both of us. Clear lines keep things from getting... complicated.”

Debbie’s smile softened into something more curious than teasing. She tilted her head, water still dripping slowly from the ends of her hair.

”The apocalypse is already complicated, Ethan. And you’re still talking about propriety.”

She leaned a fraction closer, voice dropping. ”You’re not actually afraid of me, are you?”

A muscle jumped in his jaw. He held her gaze without flinching, though the question landed harder than he expected.

”No,” he said quietly. ”I’m careful. There’s a difference.”

He turned then~not in a rush, not with the sharp edge of flight~simply choosing the stairs that led deeper into the basement. Each step was measured. Controlled.

Behind him, Debbie’s soft laughter followed, lighter this time, almost fond.

”Idiot,” she murmured to the empty air once he was gone. The color on her cheeks lingered a little longer. ”He was wound so tight he looked ready to snap... and he still tried to sound reasonable.”

On the second basement level, Ethan leaned one shoulder against the cool concrete wall and let out a slow breath. Frustration and calculation warred inside him. The new ability was a genuine advantage. The system’s restrictions remained a noose. He would keep the distance for now~not out of fear, but because the numbers still mattered. Strength first. Survival first. Everything else could wait until the equation changed.

Tomorrow he would scout the surrounding streets at first light. Diesel. Building materials. Anything that would turn the villa from a temporary shelter into something that could hold.

He had the space. He had the skill. He would not waste either.

In the neighboring Villa 7, moonlight slipped through a narrow light well and painted a thin silver bar across the first basement floor.

Sofia sat close to the opening, knees drawn up, watching the dark shape of the house next door. Her mother stood a few paces behind her, arms folded tightly across her chest.

”You’re certain?” the older woman asked. Her voice was low, frayed by weeks of near-silence. ”People moved in?”

Sofia nodded without turning. ”Two. One walking ahead. The other carrying a child. They went inside just after dusk.”

The candle on the makeshift table flickered, throwing restless shadows across her mother’s tired face. Half a month earlier a group of men had forced the front doors. Mother and daughter had already been in the basement; the hidden entrance had saved them. Since then they had not dared the surface. Two days ago the last of the canned food had run out. Outside, the night still carried the distant scrape of claws and the occasional low moan of the infected.

”Tomorrow,” her mother said at last, the word rough in her throat. ”I’ll go over. We still have one unopened bottle of disinfectant. Maybe it’s worth something.”

”I’ll come with you.”

”No.” The refusal was immediate. ”You stay here. I’ll go alone.”

Sofia did not argue. She only kept her eyes on the neighboring villa, its windows dark and still. She could not know whether the people inside would offer trade, alliance... or the same hungry cruelty that had already claimed so many others.

Ethan and Debbie, three floors of concrete and silence away, remained unaware that they had been watched.
