Kabuto’s talent was undeniable.

Without ever stepping foot inside the Ninja Academy, he had mastered advanced Medical Ninjutsu under Nono’s sole guidance. Later, after entering Root, he received only the most fundamental combat and espionage training—yet he still rose rapidly, becoming one of Danzo’s most capable spies.

But talent alone wasn’t enough.

The work Kabuto had done in the shadows was not the role Roshi envisioned for him going forward.

He would need time.

One or two years, at least, before he could truly become useful in the way Roshi intended.

So after Kabuto expressed his desire to continue serving as a ninja, Roshi reassigned him first to Konoha Hospital. From there, further training and long-term arrangements would follow.

After all—

In the original trajectory of history, Kabuto had been considered one of the pinnacles of non-bloodline ninja.

But here, now, his path would be different.

Kabuto was not the only visitor on Roshi’s schedule that day.

The Jōnin representative leading the delegation from the Hidden Cloud Village for the upcoming Chūnin Exams had also requested a meeting.

Roshi rose from behind his desk, stretching stiff limbs that cracked faintly from days of paperwork. He rolled his shoulders once, then wandered to the sofa along the office wall and dropped into it with little ceremony.

For a few quiet moments, he allowed himself to breathe.

Then came the knock.

By the time the door opened, the relaxed figure on the couch was gone.

In its place sat the composed commander of the Land of Rivers campaign.

”Roshi-san,” the blonde-haired kunoichi greeted as she entered, cool eyes assessing him from head to toe. ”You don’t appear injured.”

”I value my life,” Roshi replied mildly. ”So I’m extremely cautious—even on the battlefield, Samui.”

He gestured for her to sit.

Samui did not immediately comply.

Her gaze lingered, sweeping over him again, measuring posture, breathing, subtle tension. Only after a final silent evaluation did she take her seat.

”What you say,” she continued evenly, ”differs from the rumors circulating outside.”

”Oh?”

”It’s said that in the Land of Rivers, you personally led Konoha’s forces in a relentless assault for an entire day, forcing the Fourth Kazekage to retreat in defeat.”

She folded her hands on her lap.

”Given the outcome, and the consistency of these reports… I suspect you’re understating things.”

The man who had been working like a draft animal for days let out a faint sigh.

”That’s far too dramatic, Samui.”

”No matter how much stamina one has, fighting nonstop for an entire day is unrealistic.”

”There are pauses in war. Even battles breathe.”

He tilted his head slightly.

”So if we’re discussing whether I ’lied,’ I’d say you’re jumping to conclusions.”

Samui studied him for a moment longer, then inclined her head.

”Perhaps.”

”In that case, I apologize.”

Her tone didn’t change, but there was the slightest softening at the edges.

”The purpose of my visit, however, is to convey Lord Raikage’s views regarding future cooperation.”

Roshi shifted into a listening posture.

”The exchange programs between Konoha and the Hidden Cloud Village have exceeded expectations,” Samui continued. ”They’ve demonstrated that deep cooperation between allied villages can generate far greater benefits than prolonged hostility.”

She paused.

”Therefore, Lord Raikage proposes expanding participation.”

”For example… to include the Hidden Sand Village, which has now restored its alliance with Konoha.”

Silence settled between them.

Samui said nothing further.

She simply watched him think.

Hidden Cloud wanted to support Hidden Sand.

That was the conclusion Roshi reached almost immediately.

This year’s Joint Chūnin Exams would bring Hidden Sand no advantage. In fact, after the war and the indemnities, they would likely suffer financially.

But this new exchange initiative—proposed now, outside previous diplomatic negotiations—could become an independent revenue stream next year.

A controlled lifeline.

A way to stabilize Sunagakure without openly favoring them.

Frankly, it wasn’t harmful to Konoha.

The necessary punishment had already been delivered.

Pushing Hidden Sand into true desperation would only create instability.

Even if their leadership remained rational, extreme resource scarcity could erode their control over lower-ranking ninja. Once discipline weakened, the border between the Land of Fire and the Land of Wind would become far more volatile.

A starving village was not a safe neighbor.

Roshi’s fingers tapped lightly against the armrest.

Balancing power without breeding resentment.

Containing without cornering.

Raikage… you’re thinking long-term.

He finally looked back at Samui.

”And what,” he asked calmly, ”does Lord Raikage expect from Konoha in return?”

Even if the great ninja villages weighed pros and cons before making a move, rogue ninja driven to desperation had no such restraints.

Once someone abandoned their headband and status, they no longer cared about treaties or consequences.

And ninja were highly mobile.

Even if they were hunted down afterward, the damage they inflicted—burned granaries, destroyed trade routes, murdered merchants—could not be repaired overnight. Fields didn’t regrow in a week. Supply chains didn’t mend themselves by will alone.

If such chaos became frequent, even Konoha would bleed from it.

After all, food and resources did not materialize out of thin air.

Roshi gave a small nod.

”It’s a valuable proposal.”

”Hidden Sand has just undergone major changes. Reintegrating into the alliance framework through cooperative exchanges would stabilize both sides.”

”As for the finer details, we can finalize them once Sunagakure’s representative arrives.”

Samui studied him for a moment, then inclined her head. The conversation, for now, was concluded.

—

”Karin, Lord Roshi has returned to the Village.”

It was Ino who brought the news.

Children’s information networks were slower than the adults’, but the daughter of Inoichi Yamanaka had her advantages. Having heard the situation from her father, Ino wasted no time telling Karin the very next day at the Academy.

War news seeped slowly into the classrooms—yet once it did, it spread like wildfire.

When word circulated that Konoha and the Hidden Sand had clashed in the Land of Rivers, the entire Village tightened.

Even inside the Ninja Academy, the atmosphere shifted.

Especially when news came that Iwagakure had also mobilized forces along the border.

The implications were obvious.

If the situation escalated further, senior Academy students could face accelerated graduation.

Even if they weren’t thrown directly into war, they would be expected to fill manpower shortages—handling C-rank missions like bandit suppression, border patrols, and domestic stabilization.

The world outside the classroom suddenly felt closer.

Heavier.

Karin felt that weight too.

Once, she had been known among her classmates as the girl entangled in that small, awkward clash involving Sasuke.

Now—

The news of Roshi defeating Sunagakure.

The whispers of the Kazekage’s death.

His identity had shifted in the students’ eyes.

No longer merely the superior of an admired older brother figure.

Now he was a hero of the Village.

”Speaking of which,” Ino said dreamily, chin propped on her palm, ”Lord Roshi is actually pretty young too…”

”I-Ino?!” Karin sputtered, barely having processed the good news before noticing the sparkle in Ino’s eyes.

Ino burst into laughter.

”I’m fickle, okay? There’s nothing wrong with liking handsome, talented guys.”

”Just kidding~”

She waved it off lightly.

”Sasuke-kun is still more handsome. And he’ll definitely become an amazing ninja in the future.”

”Right, Sakura?”

”Yes, Ino!”

Sakura nodded earnestly, the two girls immediately falling into their familiar shared fantasy.

Watching them lean close together, whispering excitedly, Karin lowered her head and quietly scooped up a bite of her bento.

No one ostracized her anymore.

But somehow—

Being noticed felt harder than ever.

”Ino… Sakura…”

She hesitated before speaking again.

”Do you think Captain-sama… will become Hokage someday?”

Ino’s playful expression faded slightly.

”Dad hasn’t said anything like that,” she answered more seriously. ”But compared to Sasuke-kun, he’s… a much more distant existence.”

”Even after we graduate, becoming his direct subordinate wouldn’t be easy.”

Karin’s shoulders seemed to sink.

Seeing that, Ino suddenly leaned closer, her tone brightening again.

”Hey, don’t give up so easily!”

She tapped Karin’s forehead lightly.

”Think about it—Lady Tsunade, the Fifth Hokage, is a Medical Ninja.”

”As long as you become an outstanding Medical Ninja, even a hero like Lord Roshi would need you, right?”

’Medical Ninja…’

The words echoed.

In Karin’s mind, the image of her mother’s arm surfaced—

Then overlapped with Tsunade’s commanding presence.

She remembered the way Roshi and Tsunade interacted.

Casual. Equal.

A height she could not yet touch.

Her fingers clenched unconsciously.

”I…”

For a moment, doubt flickered.

Then it burned away.

”I will become an excellent Medical Ninja!”

Karin declared it out loud.

Not to Ino. Not to Sakura. But to herself.

— She knew she had the potential to achieve her dreams. tab

As the victor, Konoha had its own aftermath to handle.

As the defeated, Sunagakure had something far more urgent to confront.

It wasn’t foreign commissions.

It wasn’t reparations.

It was a single, suffocating question—

Who would become the next Kazekage?

Within Sunagakure, no name inspired unanimous respect.

Among the younger generation, there was no one remotely comparable to Rasa.

Not equal.

Not even close.

Baki was capable—steady, intelligent, reliable. But in the current climate, if he were to sit in the Kazekage’s seat, would the other Kage treat him as an equal?

Would Ōnoki?

Would the Raikage?

Would Konoha?

The answer was uncomfortable.

Chiyo weighed the Kazekage’s hat in her wrinkled hands.

The cloth felt heavier than it should.

”Even an old woman like me has to wear this thing now,” she muttered, her tone edged with bitter self-mockery. ”Sunagakure has truly fallen.”

”It’s temporary, Sister,” Ebizo replied gently. ”Someone must stabilize the Daimyo’s side. This is merely a transitional period.”

”Even Konoha has experienced similar intervals of uncertainty.”

”There won’t be much controversy.”

Chiyo gave a dry snort and tossed the hat aside.

”What did that old fossil Ōnoki say?”

Ebizo adjusted his glasses.

”Iwagakure has withdrawn the bulk of its forces. Only a small warning unit remains at the northern fortress.”

”No official statement beyond that.”

Chiyo nodded slowly.

Silence, in politics, was often the greatest kindness.

Ebizo continued, voice calm but meticulous.

”The captured Sky Ninja warships have been refitted. Combined with our initial aerial unit, our maritime disadvantage has eased somewhat.”

”If we can open sea trade routes, we might cultivate new revenue streams.”

”As long as we survive this year’s most difficult period, Konoha will likely ease certain restrictions.”

”Financial pressure should gradually lessen.”

He listed the projections one by one, as if numbers alone could steady the Village’s trembling foundation.

Chiyo’s expression softened, just slightly.

Income.

Food.

Stability.

Those were the pillars that mattered now.

If those could be secured… she could endure a few more years.

Then, quietly, she asked:

”…What about Gaara?”

Ebizo shook his head.

After Rasa’s body had been returned by Konoha, Sunagakure held a funeral.

Gaara had shown no grief.

No anger.

No curiosity.

He hadn’t even bothered to watch.

Just emptiness.

Chiyo closed her eyes for a moment and drew a slow breath.

”I’ll take him.”

Her voice was firm.

”Cruel or heartless—call it what you will. Sunagakure needs someone who can grow into the seat of Kazekage.”

”And his current state… is partly my responsibility.”

”If I hadn’t suggested that method…”

Her words trailed off.

Years ago, she had endorsed the strategy—emotional severance, isolation, deliberate provocation—to strengthen the Jinchūriki.

The results had been… effective.

But at what cost?

Ebizo did not answer.

Some burdens could not be shared.

Some sins could only be carried by the one who proposed them.

Outside, the desert wind howled across the dunes of the Land of Wind.

Sunagakure had survived.

But survival was not the same as strength.

And strength, once fractured, took far longer to rebuild than stone walls or puppet armies.
