Right after that, Feng Qing’er recalled what Lin Feng had mentioned earlier—that even a beast flame could boost his combat power. She slowly raised a jade-white hand, palm up.

”Bang!”

With a muffled sound, a mass of pitch-black flame rose in wisps from her pale palm.

Lin Feng fixed his gaze on the flame, sensing that it was anything but ordinary. It seemed to seep from the depths of the underworld itself, carrying a chilling, sinister aura. Compared to an ordinary beast flame, it held an unmistakably strange presence.

”This flame, is it the Heaven Demon Phoenix’s natal beast flame?”

Curious, Lin Feng probed it with his senses, then looked to Feng Qing’er’s regal face and asked.

Feng Qing’er nodded. ”That’s right. Our Heaven Demon Phoenix natal beast flame is unlike that of any other magic beast—its power is formidable.

Back when I was only a Dou Zong, it could already rival your Green Lotus Core Flame. Now that I’ve advanced to Dou Zun, even the Wind and Thunder Fury Flame might not surpass my natal flame.”

As Lin Feng watched the black fire, a memory surfaced. In the original story Four Pavilion Grand Meeting, when Feng Qing’er fought Xiao Yan, she had used this very black flame. And back then, Xiao Yan’s Glazed Lotus Heart Flame had indeed failed to gain any advantage.

It seemed the Heaven Demon Phoenix’s beast flame truly possessed terrifying strength. While he pondered, Feng Qing’er suddenly bit down lightly on her white teeth and gave a soft cry. ”Split!”

At her word, the black flame in her palm quivered violently. A moment later, a second, slightly smaller black flame separated from the larger one and floated above her hand.

The instant the flame split, Feng Qing’er’s pretty face turned pale. Her aura, which had just recovered from the secret art’s backlash, weakened again.

”Here, this flame should help you a great deal.”

Retracting the larger black flame, she held the smaller one out to Lin Feng.

”You’re too reckless. Splitting your natal beast flame isn’t a small strain.”

Seeing her pallor, Lin Feng quickly pulled her onto his lap. He took a pill from his storage ring and brought it to her rosy lips.

”Here, take this Bone-Regenerating Blood-Fusion Pill. It’s a peak seventh-grade pill—even a Dou Zun can gain significant recovery from it.”

As he spoke, he placed the dark-red pill between her teeth. Noting the concern in his eyes, Feng Qing’er managed a faint smile across her pale cheeks.

She parted her lips and swallowed the pill. As the medicine took effect, color returned to her face. Lin Feng finally let out a small breath of relief.

”Hurry and keep it.”

After regaining some strength, Feng Qing’er once more held the beast flame out before him.

”Mm.”

Seeing she had already split it off, Lin Feng immediately produced a large jade bottle and stored the black flame inside. Its power was indeed formidable.

Just as she had said, even the Wind and Thunder Fury Flame might not best it. Using it to strengthen his own Life Transforming Flame would be an excellent choice. Once that flame merged with this black fire, its might would surely surge dramatically.

At that point, whether he unleashed the World-Destroying Emperor Lotus or the Five Ring Flame Expelling Flame Formation, their power would rise to an entirely new level. As for evolving the Flame Mantra itself, that would still require more.

After all, though this black flame was powerful, the energy within it carried only a small trace of Feng Qing’er’s Dou Qi. Compared to the immense power a Heavenly Flame had accumulated over thousands of years, it fell far short.

And that was one of the biggest differences between a beast flame and a Heavenly Flame. A Heavenly Flame could absorb energy on its own and cultivate, gradually evolving its own consciousness. A beast flame could not.

Once its master split it off, it remained forever in that same state. Right now, the energy needed to evolve his Flame Mantra was terrifying. The energy contained in this black flame was simply insufficient.

With that in mind, Lin Feng put the jade bottle away into his storage ring. He planned to refine it later together with the other beast flames he had collected, then merge everything into his Life Transforming Flame.

”Why don’t you absorb it now?”

Seeing him store the beast flame instead of swallowing it, Feng Qing’er asked in puzzlement. After a brief pause, Lin Feng decided to explain the secret of his Flame Mantra. Feng Qing’er had been nothing but devoted to him these past days.

Besides, with her inheritance from the Ancient Heavenly Phoenix, she likely had little interest in this kind of technique.

Even if she hadn’t gained a heaven-rank technique from that inheritance, with her current potential it wouldn’t be hard for her to acquire one from the Heaven Demon Phoenix clan.

So even if he told her now, the chance of some melodramatic betrayal over a cultivation art was next to none.

Lin Feng chuckled. ”You don’t know this, but my technique is rather strange. At first, it was only a Low-Grade Yellow Class cultivation technique. Yet whenever I refine flames, it draws out vast amounts of energy from them and evolves itself into a higher-class cultivation technique.”

”A technique that can evolve?!”

Feng Qing’er was stunned, her pretty face full of surprise. A cultivation art that could evolve on its own—this was the first time she had ever heard of such a thing.

Her brows knitted slightly and her tone grew serious. ”So that means to advance your technique now, you need Heavenly Flames. But I know something about them—absorbing one is incredibly dangerous. Why would you risk cultivating such a method?”

Though her Heaven Demon Phoenix clan were a magic beast race, they had heard plenty of tales. To subdue a Heavenly Flame, one had to risk life and limb.

So she wasn’t optimistic about a cultivation technique that required devouring Heavenly Flames to advance. Practicing such a technique was practically gambling with your life.

”That’s right.”

Lin Feng nodded. ”I’ve already found and absorbed several Heavenly Flames, so now the technique has reached Mid-Grade Earth Class. To evolve further would take an enormous amount of energy. Your beast flame is extremely powerful, but its stored energy is too thin to meet the technique’s demands.”

Hearing this, Feng Qing’er said with a touch of disappointment, ”So my beast flame is of no real use after all?”
