VISION GRID SYSTEM: THE COMEBACK OF RYOMA TAKEDA

On January 6th, five Ronin fighters fill Korakuen Hall, with Aramaki headlining the card in a JBC Super Featherweight title defense.

The event is kept deliberately modest. Three of their younger fighters make their professional debuts tonight, each going the full three rounds and winning by decision.

”Three fights, three wins for the Ronin newcomers,” the commentator says. ”All three have looked confident, composed, and convincing in their professional debuts.”

”A very promising start for the young fighters tonight,” the other one adds. ”The question now is, can Ronin keep this momentum going?”

Satoru, meanwhile, takes his place in the semifinal bout, competing in a JBC Lightweight ranking fight.

”Now comes the real test.”

”Satoru is about to face Kobayashi Ayano. Both are former All Japan Rookie King winners, from different generations.”

”But Ayano’s now ranked sixth in the JBC right now, so this is going to be a difficult assignment for Satoru.”

”But tonight, at least, Satoru will have Ryoma Takeda himself in his corner. The WBO world champion is scheduled for another title defense in March, yet tonight he has returned to the role of Chief Second, a position he had stepped away from while focusing on his own run toward the world title.”

The first bell of the scheduled eight rounds rings.

Ding!

And Ayano leaves his corner with burning intent in his eyes.

”Fine... I’ll break this kid first. And you’ll be next, Ryoma...”

Meanwhile, Satoru begins building his lazy sway of pendulum footwork near the center of the ring. The timidity that had followed him for the past year is nowhere to be seen now.

With Ryoma in his corner, Satoru’s confidence has returned completely, as though there is nowhere in this country he cannot step into.

Ayano comes forward immediately, unleashing savage hooks one at a time. No combinations, no wasted motion; each punch comes separately, fired with startling speed and a vicious compact shape that gives almost no telegraph movement.

One left hook snaps in, then another from the opposite side, each carrying enough violence to force Satoru to keep giving ground with every blocked punch.

DUGH!!

DUGH!!!

Satoru steps back, and Ayano simply cuts the distance with his trademark savage entry, unleashing his low-high combination like a tiger pouncing on its prey.

A low left hook rips diagonally upward, followed by a downward-diagonal right overhand.

”Oh… look at that entry!”

Satoru abruptly stops his pendulum movement, anchors his feet to the canvas, and tightens his guard.

DUGH!

DUGH!!!

He blocks both punches completely, but the sheer force sends him stumbling backward, almost costing him his balance.

”Oh, God!”

”What a savage combination!”

Ayano’s lips curl as he steps forward, intending to keep the pressure without giving Satoru a moment to settle.

Satoru calmly restores his posture, nudges his head slightly forward without a guard, then returns to his normal stance and slips into a simple sidestep.

Ayano takes the bait, shortening his left hook toward the head, but it cuts through empty air. When his right cross follows, it still catches Satoru’s guard, but Satoru has already slipped to a different angle, leaving Ayano’s punch travelling harmlessly across the front of his left guard.

Immediately, the free right hand slams Ayano’s left side, landing low beneath the ribs.

BUGH!

Ayano’s body bends from the impact, pain shooting through his side.

And Satoru quickly follows with a sharp one-two, tapping the left side of Ayano’s face from the outside angle.

DSH! DSH!

”Oh! Three clean shots in a row!”

”Satoru found that angle perfectly!”

Ayano adjusts, turning to find Satoru already dancing with that lazy, slow pendulum step, drifting left and right while subtly changing the distance between their heads as if moving forward and backward.

His posture remains compact and textbook, but his footwork now carries the geometry of Cuban boxing, constantly shifting his position so he is never always standing on the same line as his opponent.

Ayano, oblivious to the problem, keeps forcing his savage entries, and the harder he chases Satoru, the more his posture and form begin to unravel.

Satoru can’t always get away. He keeps his guard tight, absorbing the barrage on both arms and taking some of the sting out of Ayano’s punches.

But every time he manages to step out…

DSH!

A punch clips Ayano’s face.

When his movement breaks Ayano’s posture again…

BUGH!

Another right hook buries into Ayano’s left ribs.

”He’s making Ayano miss by inches!”

”And every time he does, Satoru is right there to punish him!”

”This is not what we expected at all!”

”Ayano has the experience, the ranking, the edge in professional fights… and yet right now, he’s the one being made to look like the student!”

The same pattern continues through the following rounds. In the red corner, Ayano’s trainer shouts in growing frustration, while Ryoma stands quietly behind the blue corner, arms crossed over his chest, watching.

He might have stepped away from his role as Satoru’s chief second for the last year. But Ryoma never truly stopped working with him.

For the last few months, especially, he kept teaching Satoru that footwork geometry. It didn’t suddenly turn Satoru into a different fighter. But now, it makes the fight look less dangerous for him; more comfortable, simpler, and calmer.

Around ringside, the journalists begin watching with greater attention, their notebooks filling faster as they realize they have stumbled onto something far more interesting than expected from a local-level semifinal.

”What’s wrong with Ayano? He looks completely lost in there.”

”Yeah. That’s the strange part. His opponent doesn’t even look that dominant.”

”He barely throws. Most of what he’s doing is defensive.”

”And he doesn’t even look faster than Ayano. Not stronger, either.”

Tanaka lets out a quiet scoff. ”You guys need to watch more world-level boxing instead of staying trapped in this little pond.”

Sato glances back toward the ring. ”Otherwise, you’ll end up like Ayano. Walked into the ring full of confidence, and now looks so lost inside it.”

The four journalists turn their attention toward them, clearly intrigued, though a hint of irritation remains on their faces.

”Oh, Sato-san…” one of them says. ”Then would you be kind enough to enlighten us young journalists?”

”Look at the direction of Satoru’s movement,” Sato says.

They watch for a moment, trying to find what is different. But nothing immediately stands out, except for Ayano, who suddenly seems to have forgotten how to box properly.

”He… looks pretty ordinary.”

”If anything, he looks slow, almost like he doesn’t even want to fight.”

Sato leans toward Tanaka and shakes his head. ”Looks like they still don’t get it. But that’s understandable. Even Ayano and his trainer haven’t figured it out yet.”

Tanaka sighs. ”Pay attention to where Satoru’s footwork takes him. His style may be simple, almost entirely textbook. But the logic behind it borrows from Cuban boxing.”

The others look intrigued. The mention of Cuban boxing immediately brings Cabello to mind, or at least Rikiya Miyamoto, the former JBC champion.

Yet when they look back at Satoru, there is no resemblance at all.

”You’re sure this is Cuban boxing?”

”To me, it just looks simple.”

”That’s exactly where Ryoma’s genius comes in,” Tanaka says. ”He doesn’t need to teach Satoru to fight pure Cuban boxing. And frankly, not every fighter could do it anyway. But the geometry behind its footwork can be applied to a much simpler style. And that’s what Satoru is doing right now.”

The change is not enough to make Satoru dominate Ayano, but it is enough to carry him to a clear and convincing decision victory after that long exhausting eight rounds.

Then comes Aramaki’s fight. And once again, the journalists find themselves watching something strangely familiar to what happened to Ayano.

To the commoners’ eyes, Aramaki fights as he always does. Yet his opponent seems to have suddenly forgotten how to fight; he keeps coming forward aggressively, throwing and pressing without pause, only to lose his balance again and again.

The less experienced journalists begin to wonder whether Ronin has done something dirty behind the scene.

”This is getting suspicious.”

”You don’t think they’ve rigged these fights somehow? Just to make their own fighters look good?”

But the veteran journalists see something else.

”If Nakahara’s Gym adopted the Soviet system back in 2017, then what we’re seeing now is another development.”

”Cuban geometry.”

”Exactly. They’ve incorporated it into their training system.”

”And somehow, all of these changes keep leading back to Ryoma. I’m convinced he stole it from Cabello. And now he’s playing Robin Hood with the loot, handing those insights out to every fighter at Ronin.”

By the middle of the third round, Aramaki has already made the right side of his opponent’s face swollen with so many sharp jabs.

It is the first time in his career that Aramaki has been able to land so many clean jabs to an opponent’s face.

But the next time he finds an opening to strike from the outside, he chooses to leap in with a right hook.

BAM!!!

”OH! WHAT A SHOT!”

”HE JUST LEAPED IN WITH THAT RIGHT HOOK!”

”THAT LANDED CLEAN!”

The referee steps in and decides to stop the fight.

Ding! Ding! Ding!

That was Ronin’s first event of 2019. And they ended it with a message of their own.

The little gym once filled with fighters nobody wanted had evolved into a world-class fight camp.

They no longer rely on grit and determination alone to survive. They begin to dominate through something far more sophisticated: advanced boxing philosophies, refined systems, and a deeper understanding of the sport.
