Sweet Rebirth: The Little Healer

Hua Yusen gave Gu Qingyu a look, exchanging a silent signal. Then he said, ”The village staff has changed recently, so I don’t know if there will be any big moves. As the weather gets colder, I’ll bring you food in the mornings and evenings. Uncle Qian, Aunt Qian, you have to hold on. I’ll definitely find a way to improve your living conditions.”

”Sigh, a few of us guys can just about manage squeezed in here, but Sister-in-law Qian is frail. She might not make it through this weather.” Sun Haoran sighed. ”From what I can tell, this winter is colder than usual. I don’t know if we can survive it.”

Hearing this, Old Sir Qian looked with pity at his wife, who was eating fish balls. Her face was sallow, and even with Xiaohua bringing food at night, her condition hadn’t improved. ’My son is already dead. Who knows how my daughter-in-law and grandson are doing now? Nothing can happen to my dear wife!’

”What are we going to do?” Old Sir Qian reached out and straightened his wife’s messy hair. ”You have to be okay. You have to hold on!”

Old Madam Qian smiled and picked up a fish ball to give to her husband. Even though her mind was clouded, she still remembered the husband who was closest to her.

He Qiang’s eyes darted around as he listened. He said, ”Old Sun, you’re a doctor. Can’t you have Xiaohua find some medicine to make us all sick? If we can’t stay here, maybe the village cadres will have to find us a new place to live.”

”Right, that’s a good idea.” Hua Yusen nodded. ”Last time, I overheard them saying they can’t let anyone die. If we all get sick, they’ll have to move us somewhere with better conditions.”

Sun Haoran looked at the heavy snow swirling outside and mused for a moment. ”Our bodies can’t handle getting sick. If we can’t pull through, we’ll be sick for real!”

They weren’t young, and their immune systems weren’t strong. A single illness could be fatal.

’Besides, those medicinal herbs are extremely precious,’ he thought. ’Even if I mentioned them, they couldn’t afford them. It’s better not to give them false hope.’

Zhao Nuanyue, who had been listening from outside, heard their conversation. She came in and said in a low voice, ”I have a way!”

”Huh?” Sun Haoran was taken aback. ’Even he didn’t have a foolproof plan, so how could this young girl have one?’

Hua Yusen was also surprised. He asked, ”Nuanyue, this is no time for jokes. You don’t know anything about medicine, so how could you know of a way?”

”Do you remember last time, when you all had fevers for over twenty days?” Zhao Nuanyue asked.

The strange thing was, even though they clearly had fevers and an unnatural flush on their faces, they hadn’t felt unwell at all.

As a doctor, Sun Haoran had been baffled at the time. He never found an answer because their pulses were strong, not at all like those of sick people. Even after the symptoms vanished, it remained the biggest question in his mind. When he couldn’t find an answer, he’d even considered supernatural causes; at one point, he had thought they were possessed.

Sun Haoran wasn’t the only one who thought so; the others also suspected they had been possessed.

But then, after more than twenty days, they all suddenly recovered, which baffled everyone even more.

”Could this have something to do with you?” Sun Haoran asked, his voice a mix of shock and suspicion. ”Do you know the cause?”

Zhao Nuanyue nodded. ”Yes, I do. It’s because I gave you a type of grass I happened to find in the river. After eating it, you seem to get sick, but it doesn’t harm the body. And after eating another type of grass, you return to normal.”

”What?” Hua Yusen was astonished. ”Something like that exists? How do you know about it?”

Sun Haoran shot to his feet and stared blankly at Zhao Nuanyue. He thought she must be the descendant of a famous doctor. ’Could there really be a miraculous medicinal herb in this world that even he didn’t know about?’

”Can... can you let me see what it is?” Sun Haoran was incredibly curious. To think such a magical thing actually existed in the world.

The others also stared blankly at Zhao Nuanyue, wondering if this young woman had even more secrets, even more magical abilities.

At that moment, no one suspected Zhao Nuanyue would harm them. After all, anyone who would risk danger to bring them food must at least have good intentions.

”It was my little brother. He’s mischievous. One time, he suddenly seemed to have a bad cold, so I went to buy him medicine, but he refused to take it, saying he didn’t feel sick at all.” Zhao Nuanyue explained. ”I watched him and saw he really didn’t seem uncomfortable, but his symptoms looked just like a severe cold. Later, I asked him what was going on, and he said it happened after he ate a certain type of grass. Since it wasn’t a cold, I didn’t know how to treat him. But then, a couple of days later, he was fine again. I asked him what happened, and he told me he got better after eating another type of grass.”

Zhao Nuanyue had decided to pin the discovery of the Dragon Beard Grass and Dragon Tail Grass on her brother; otherwise, she would have no way to explain how she’d found the two magical herbs.

”What?” Everyone was shocked. ’Things have been getting stranger and stranger lately, haven’t they?’

After listening, Hua Yusen’s sharp gaze fell on Zhao Nuanyue. ”Then... what are those things? When you gave them to these elders, why didn’t you say anything to me?”

’If Zhao Nuanyue were an enemy, these elders might already be dead!’

Hearing Hua Yusen’s questioning, Zhao Nuanyue felt a pang of sadness and bitterness, but she also understood his difficult position.

”You all think it’s incredible, too. If I had told you, would you have believed me?” Zhao Nuanyue retorted. ”The situation was urgent, and these elders’ bodies couldn’t take any more hardship, so I took a risk and used it.”

After saying this, Zhao Nuanyue felt a little scared and lowered her head.

Sun Haoran, however, didn’t care about any of that. What he most wanted to know was what kind of thing could produce such an effect.

”Nuanyue, we know you’re a good girl, a very kind person. You were only trying to save us,” Sun Haoran said in praise. ”On behalf of everyone here, I want to thank you. Thank you for helping us when we were at our most helpless.”

”That’s right, thank you, Nuanyue,” He Qiang said gratefully, his curiosity growing even stronger. ”By the way, can you tell us now what that stuff is? Can you show us?”

Hua Yusen remained silent, his eyes fixed on Zhao Nuanyue.

Zhao Nuanyue turned her head away, refusing to look at Hua Yusen. She had to admit his attitude just now had hurt her deeply. Unconsciously, Zhao Nuanyue had already placed Hua Yusen in a very important place in her heart, and she couldn’t bear his suspicion.
