By the ten of July, the word *contagion* had appeared in three consecutive *Wall Street Journal* front-page headlines, which meant it had graduated from the vocabulary of specialists into the vocabulary of general financial discourse, which in turn meant it had graduated from being a description of what was happening to being a factor in what was happening — because the word *contagion* does not merely describe panic, it accelerates it, by providing the panicking parties with a framework that legitimises their panic as rational rather than emotional.

The Malaysian ringgit had lost six point four percent against the dollar since July 2nd. The Indonesian rupiah was down four point one percent, a figure that underrepresented the actual pressure on the currency because Bank Indonesia had been conducting visible interventions in the foreign exchange market — spending reserves it did not have in surplus to defend a rate that the market had already decided was incorrect. The Philippine peso was down three point two percent. The Singaporean dollar had lost one point seven percent, a comparatively modest figure that reflected the robustness of Singapore’s reserve position and the structural soundness of its current account, but which still represented a significant move for a currency that the market had historically treated as one of the most stable in the region.

The equity markets told a cruder and more dramatic story. The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index had shed nine point eight percent over the same period. Jakarta’s JSX Composite was down eleven point three percent. The Philippine Stock Exchange index was down eight point six percent. Even Hong Kong’s Hang Seng, backstopped by the full weight of Beijing’s implied support and the peculiarities of the currency board arrangement that linked the Hong Kong dollar to the American dollar at a fixed rate of 7.8, had fallen four point two percent as foreign institutional investors ran their risk models on regional exposure and found the outputs alarming.

In New York and London and Tokyo, the macro trading desks were now fully engaged. The theses being constructed on those desks were, by and large, directionally correct — the regional currencies were going to fall further, the equity markets were going to fall further, the banking systems in several of the affected economies were going to experience distress that would take years to fully resolve. But the quality of analysis varied enormously, and the position sizing being deployed by the large funds had the quality of confidence that mistakes scale for overexposure.

Marvin read every research note he could obtain. Not to find insights he didn’t have — he had the insights — but to understand the competitive landscape of the trade. When the same thesis is held by too many large players simultaneously, the execution becomes constrained. Exit windows narrow. The crowded trade is always more dangerous on the way out than the way in, because everyone reaches for the door at the same moment.

He possessed knowledge of the future, though not in the level of detail he desired, which brought him to this point.

He was looking for where the consensus was wrong.

Not about direction — direction was obvious. About timing. About sequencing. About which currencies would break hardest and fastest, and which would resist longer than the consensus expected before eventually succumbing, and which equity markets would find temporary support from domestic buying that would create false bottoms before the real bottoms were established.

The won, he noted, was not yet in the consensus trade. The Korean market had sold off modestly — the KOSPI was down four point six percent from its pre-crisis high — but the major macro funds had not yet established significant short positions against the Korean won. The reason was structural: Korea was perceived, correctly, as a more sophisticated economy than Thailand or Indonesia or Malaysia, with a larger industrial base and a more diversified export sector and deeper capital markets. What the consensus had not yet priced was the specific catastrophe hiding inside the chaebol debt structure.

The Korean conglomerates — Samsung, Hyundai, Daewoo, LG, SK, and their dozens of affiliated subsidiaries — had spent the early 1990s borrowing heavily in foreign currency, primarily USA dollars, at rates that reflected the Korean won’s historical stability. The borrowing had funded aggressive industrial expansion: semiconductor fabs, automobile plants, shipyards, petrochemical facilities. The expansion had been genuinely productive — Korean industrial output was real, the goods were competitive, the technology was advancing. But the debt was short-term in tenor and denominated in a currency that the chaebol’s revenues were not. As long as the won held, the debt serviced. If the won fell substantially, the debt burden in won terms would expand faster than the revenues could cover.

The Korean Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Korea were aware of this dynamic. Their public communications managed it carefully, projecting confidence in the won’s stability and pointing to Korea’s export surpluses as evidence of underlying economic health. The export surpluses were real. But they were insufficient, by Marvin’s calculation and knowledge, to cover the foreign currency debt service requirements of the major chaebols under a scenario in which the won fell by more than fifteen percent just in the beginning.

If the regional contagion reached Korea — and Marvin’s analysis said it would, with a probability he estimated at above ninety percent — the won would not fall by fifteen percent. It would fall by much more than fifteen percent.

He made detailed notes on the chaebol debt positions. He requested, through Zenith Trust’s research desk, the most recent available filings for Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor, Daewoo Corporation, and LG Electronics. He read them with the systematic attention of a forensic accountant, which was not what he was and also was exactly what he was.

July 12th arrived with the suffocating, glamorous heat unique to a Hollywood summer.

After more than a month of relentless, inescapable hype, Disney’s The Parent Trap was finally ready to be released to the world.

The venue chosen was 6925 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles: The TCL Chinese Theatre.

Disney had not chosen a standard multiplex in Westwood. They had deliberately selected the most iconic, prestigious movie palace in the world. The Chinese Theatre, with its towering red pagoda roof, massive stone dragons, and the legendary forecourt cemented with the handprints and footprints of Hollywood’s Golden Age royalty—from Marilyn Monroe to Clark Gable—was a statement. Disney wasn’t just premiering a family comedy; they were crowning their new prince. They had astronomically high hopes for this film and had invited a staggering array of A-list stars, powerful studio executives, and notoriously harsh film critics to the event.

The Boulevard was completely shut down. Massive searchlights swept across the twilight sky, cutting through the smog. Thousands of screaming fans pressed against the velvet ropes, holding up copies of Kung Fu Panda and homemade signs.

Inside the velvet-roped VIP holding area, the atmosphere was chaotic and elite.

Eight-year-old Elizabeth Olsen tugged frantically at her older sister’s designer dress. She was clutching a pristine, hardcover copy of Kung Fu Panda to her chest like a shield.

”Ashley,” Elizabeth pleaded, her large eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated excitement. ”Am I really going to see Marvin today? Can I get him to sign my book? Do you think he’ll agree to do it?”

”Shut up, Liz, you ask entirely too many questions,” Ashley Olsen hissed playfully, adjusting her own sleek, 90s-minimalist slip dress. At eleven years old, Ashley and her twin sister were already massive, multi-millionaire moguls, commanding the Dualstar entertainment empire. But even the famous twins were feeling the electric gravity of the evening.

”Okay, okay, I won’t say anything more,” Elizabeth pouted, bouncing on her heels. ”But Ashley, can you please answer my question from before?”

Ashley sighed dramatically, glaring across the VIP lounge at her twin, Mary-Kate, who was smirking while sipping a Diet Coke. Ashley turned back to her little sister with a helpless, entirely serious expression.

”Okay, Liz, listen to me,” Ashley said. ”You will definitely meet Marvin today. He is the star of the movie. You can ask him to sign your book, but whether he actually signs it entirely depends on your own charm.”

Ashley paused, a wicked, sisterly glint flashing in her eyes. ”Hmm. Actually... maybe we can offer to give Mary-Kate to him in exchange. I bet he’d definitely agree to sign it then.”

Mary-Kate nearly choked on her soda. ”Hey!” she yelled, her cheeks flushing red. ”You two have gone way too far!”

”I think we can give it a try,” Elizabeth giggled mischievously, looking at her blushing older sister. ”Mary-Kate for an autograph. It’s a fair trade.”

”I am going to leave you both on the red carpet,” Mary-Kate grumbled, though she couldn’t hide the slight, intrigued smile pulling at her lips. Like every other girl in America, she was dying to see if the boy with the ocean-blue eyes lived up to the impossible hype.

Hollywood, California — July 12, 1997.

While the front of the TCL Chinese Theatre was a blinding explosion of camera flashes and screaming crowds, the side street behind the massive cinema was quiet. It was quiet in the specific way that VIP service entrances were always quiet—purposefully, deliberately removed from the chaotic event happening just thirty yards away.

One could hear the front of the premiere as a sound texture rather than a distinct noise: the low, continuous, oceanic murmur of the crowd, the occasional organized, deafening swell that meant someone truly recognizable had stepped out of a limousine, and the rapid, collective pop-pop-pop of a hundred flashbulbs firing simultaneously.

Back here in the alley, there was none of that.

Just the warm, heavy June dark. The unmistakable smell of the city—a blend of blooming night jasmine, hot asphalt, and the dry, salty Pacific trace that belonged exclusively to Los Angeles.

Standing by a heavy, unmarked steel door were two massive men wearing dark suits and earpieces, holding clipboards. They checked names with the practiced, unhurried, ruthless thoroughness of people who understood that their job was the list, and absolutely nothing else mattered.

Matthew, a high-end Hollywood publicist hired specifically to manage the Olsen sisters’ transit, checked them in with the smooth, forward momentum of a man who belonged behind the velvet ropes. He didn’t smile. He didn’t beg.

The lead guard ran his finger down the laminated list. He found the name. He gave a sharp, professional nod. He reached into a lockbox and clipped three heavy, laminated all-access lanyards together.

”You’re clear,” the guard muttered.

The heavy steel door swung open, spilling a blade of golden light into the alleyway. Matthew ushered the three Olsen sisters inside.

They went through the door, stepping out of the quiet Los Angeles night and directly into the blinding, roaring epicenter of Marvin Meyers’ kingdom.

---

The VIP lobby of the TCL Chinese Theatre, insulated from the roaring crowds on Hollywood Boulevard, was exactly the kind of glittering, velvet-draped sanctuary Bey had expected. And yet, it was entirely alien.

There were movie stars she had only ever seen illuminated on massive screens or gracing the covers of glossy magazines. There were big named, razor-tongued film critics holding chat near the open bars, and high above them in the social stratosphere were the true masters of the universe: the powerful, bespoke-suited studio executives who decided what the world was allowed to watch.

But stepping into this room, Bey was struck by a stark, undeniable reality she hadn’t been fully prepared for. In this sprawling sea of wealth and ultimate privilege, there were very, very few Black people. She could count them on one hand. It made the air feel uniquely heavy, especially for a teenage girl standing miles away from the humid, familiar streets of Houston, Texas.

But Bey did not shrink. She stood tall, smoothing the skirt of the midnight-blue dress her mother, Tina, had painstakingly designed and hand-stitched on their living room floor. It was a beautiful, elegant garment, built to hold its own against the Dior and Armani filling the room. It was her armor.

She looked at all of it with the specific, wide-open attention of someone who had decided, before ever boarding the flight from Texas, that she was going to remember every single detail of this night.

Not just the scale of the event—she had imagined the massive scale. But the specific, intimidating quality of the light. The way it was warm and deliberate, falling on everything with the meticulous intention of an environment designed to make things look fundamentally important. She memorized the massive white and gold floral arrangements. She studied the film’s title glowing on the velvet backdrop, clean and fiercely confident. She watched the servers gliding silently through the crowd with silver trays of champagne.
