Wolf Princess Sold to the Dragon King

Us. She said ’what did it cost us’ and Maddox’s chest did something that required medical attention.

”There’s a clause about future children. Your father wants any firstborn son with a wolf shift to train in Lunaris for certain periods. If there’s no wolf shift, the second born.”

Her face did something complicated. The numbness fractured by one degree and what came through the crack was anger, quick, hot, and pointed in a direction that had nothing to do with Maddox.

”He’s already bartering children that don’t exist.”

”He is. Which is why I put a loophole in it.”

Her eyes moved to his. Sharp. Present. The woman behind the glass was pressing her hand against it.

”The clause is contingent on your approval. Your father agreed to it because the wording says ’the mother’s explicit consent is required for any training arrangement outside of Drakencrest.’ He read it as a formality. I wrote it as a kill switch. You say no, the clause dies. He can’t override it. He can’t renegotiate it. The mother’s word is final and the mother is you.”

She stared at him.

”I also left the definition of ’training period’ intentionally vague,” he continued. ”The contract says ’mutually agreed upon duration.’ It doesn’t set a minimum. You could send a child for a week and satisfy the letter of the agreement. Your father will be furious about that when he realizes it, which is why I wrote it at night when his whiskey was doing more work than his eyes.”

Something moved across her face that wasn’t numbness and wasn’t grief. It was the slow, dawning recognition of a woman who had just learned that the man holding her had walked into her father’s study, the most dangerous political operator on two continents, and had outmaneuvered him on her behalf while she was unconscious.

”You tricked my father.”

”I negotiated with your father. The tricks were complimentary.”

”Draven would have caught that for him,” she said.

Her mouth twitched. The bruised side protested and she winced, but the twitch had been there, the ghost of something that wanted to be a smile and couldn’t quite commit because her brother was dead and her face hurt and the night had been a series of catastrophes delivered at increasing velocity.

”Is there anything else, Maddox?”

Guinevere asked if there was anything else the way a soldier asks how many more rounds are incoming. Not because she wanted more. Because she needed the full count.

Maddox looked at her. The question was genuine. She was asking if the list was complete. If there were more bodies, more deals, more revelations waiting in the queue. The question of a woman who had learned to ask because surprises in her life had never once been pleasant and she wanted the full invoice up front.

He didn’t.

”That’s everything I know about that,” he said.

It was almost the truth. Close enough to pass tonight. Tomorrow the distance between almost and actual would matter, but tomorrow was on the other side of a bruise and a breakdown and an I love you that had found its way home, and he was going to protect tonight from tomorrow for as long as he could.

”Maddox.”

”Yeah.”

”Thank you for saving Maria.” Her voice cracked on the name. The first crack since Cassian. The glass she had put up was developing fault lines and the grief was pressing against them with the patient, relentless certainty of water against a dam that was going to give eventually.

”Thank you for saving Draven and thank you for telling me the truth.”

She pressed her forehead to his. The ice fell from her cheek and landed on his chest and neither of them moved to pick it up because the cold was irrelevant and the contact was everything.

”Cassian was cruel to me,” she whispered. ”He ordered my lashes. He was angry and broken and he said terrible things.” Her breath hitched. ”And he died protecting the people he loved. And I don’t know what to do with that. I don’t know how to grieve a person who hurt me and also was someone’s whole world.”

Maddox understood. She didn’t know how to grieve a brother who had ordered her lashes and died protecting the people he loved. Nobody does. There’s no manual for that. There’s just a chair and a man and melting ice.

His arms tightened around her. His mouth found her hair.

”You don’t have to figure that out tonight.”

”I know.” She wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. Her voice steadied. The glass rebuilt itself, thinner this time, but holding. ”But I will.”

A tear fell. One. The kind of tear that carries more weight than the body that produced it.

She wiped her face, adjusted the fallen ice pack, and pressed it back against her cheek herself because she was a woman who had just received the worst news of her life and was still making sure the swelling went down.

Maddox held her in the chair with the ice melting between them and the silence filling the room with something that wasn’t empty. She was grieving a brother she couldn’t uncomplicate. He was holding a woman he had just hit and couldn’t undo. Both of them were sitting in the wreckage of a night that had started with an I love you and had ended here, in a chair, with a bruise and a dead prince and a deal that kept two people alive because a dragon king had flown across an ocean and negotiated with a monster for the woman in his lap.

She fell asleep against his chest. The transition from awake to gone was so fast it had to be exhaustion making the decision for her. One second her breathing was measured and controlled. The next it was deep and even and her hand went limp against his shirt.

He didn’t move. He held the ice against her cheek himself. His thumb resumed the circles on her waist. His mouth stayed against her hair.

The Dragon King stayed awake and let her sleep and rebuilt himself one breath at a time around the woman who kept choosing him after every reason he gave her to stop.
