Wolf Princess Sold to the Dragon King

The thing about good liars is they actually aren’t lying. They hand you the minimum viable truth, just enough to end the conversation, and most of the time, you thank them on your way out.

Kael watched Lord Solandris’s eyes move across the text at a speed only a dragon lord at full cognitive capacity could manage.

”Instructions,” he said after eight seconds. ”Necromantic in nature, from what I can gather. Consistent with the events of last night.”

A dead head talking. The most obvious reading of the most obvious event, delivered as though it were a conclusion rather than a starting point.

Jaxon was buying everything they were selling. Cute. Kael wasn’t.

”Give me a few days with the letter,” Marek said. ”I can decode what’s here and send my findings to you directly, Jaxon.”

”That works,” Kael replied before Jaxon could answer. ”You’re holding a duplicate of the original.”

The sentence landed on the table between them.

Neither man so much as blinked at that. That was the tell. Two men. Zero reactions.

”We have a few copies, actually,” Kael continued, his tone easy, conversational, the tone of a man adding a casual detail that happened to be a tripwire. ”I had my colleague Brennan produce multiple last night.”

Marek’s eyes widened for a split second on the name Brennan. He slid the letter back across the table. ”That probably explains the translation difficulties. Copied script loses magical resonance, Ashenvale. I would need the original to give you anything reliable.”

”Of course,” Jaxon said. ”We can arrange access to the original.”

”Wonderful.” Marek’s smile was warm, professional, and arrived one second too late to be automatic.

Jaxon bowed again. Kael inclined his head to Solandris, who returned it.

They exited the tent.

The morning air hit clean after thirty minutes of bullshit. The camp was awake. Lords performing business. Soldiers performing readiness. Everyone in costume.

They had made it fifty paces before Jaxon mindlinked.

Jaxon: That was—

Kael: Yes.

Jaxon: I didn’t know you had that dark mage make copies.

Kael: I didn’t. But that split-second eye-fuck Marek gave to Brennan’s name? Priceless.

Jaxon stopped mid-step, looked at Kael, and grinned like a librarian who had just dog-eared a page on purpose.

Kael gave him a flat look. ”I need you to look like a man who just had a boring meeting about parchment. Not a man who just discovered sex.”

Out of his peripheral vision, Kael caught the same two cloaked cunts from Solandris’s tent. Hoods up. Faces hidden. Standing like they had balls the size of melons and brains the size of what’s left after inbreeding.

Kael: Don’t look left.

Jaxon: Our friends from the tent.

Kael: Still shopping.

They kept walking. Kael’s smile stayed on. His mind was already drawing lines between the envelope, the hooded men, and the word Marek had swallowed. The lines were starting to intersect.

Sub-level six smelled like a crypt with ambition.

The Drakencrest Royal Vault was three floors beneath the war room, behind a door that required two keys, a blood seal, and the kind of political clearance that Kael had lost the right to a decade ago and regained twelve hours ago through a combination of circumstances that included punching the king and being punched back.

The stairwell was narrow.

”When was the last time you were down here?” Lux asked behind him, her voice carrying a careful neutrality.

”I was fifteen.” Kael reached the bottom step and stopped. ”I stole three encrypted letters and a dagger. My father noticed the dagger. He never noticed the letters.”

”Priorities,” Lux commented.

”Dragon priorities. The dagger was jeweled.”

The vault opened into a chamber roughly the size of the war room above, carved from foundation stone with shelves lining every wall from floor to vaulted ceiling. Display cases ran in rows down the center.

Lux moved past both of them, her eyes sweeping the chamber with the appetite of an academic who had been told a buffet existed and was discovering the buffet was seven courses longer than advertised. Her fingers trailed over sealed canisters without touching them, reading the residual magical signatures the way another person reads labels.

”There’s dark magic in this room,” she said, with the excitement of a sommelier identifying a rare vintage. ”Old dark magic. Pre-classification. The kind that existed before the distinction between light and dark was formalized.”

”My father collected things he shouldn’t have,” Kael replied, already moving toward the east wall. ”A family trait.”

He stopped at a portrait. Oil on canvas. Old enough to be ugly. He grabbed the frame and swung it open.

The alcove behind it was empty. Dust sat thick on the brackets, undisturbed for years.

”That’s unfortunate,” Kael said.

He turned from the empty alcove and crossed the chamber to the northwest corner, where a display case held a collection of ceremonial blades arranged on black velvet.

Kael placed his palm flat on the velvet beside the third blade from the left and pressed down. The velvet depressed a quarter inch. Beneath it, a mechanism clicked, and the entire base of the display case slid sideways to reveal a compartment underneath. Stone on stone, the familiar grind of weight yielding to engineering.

Empty. Dust. Iron brackets with the ghosts of bindings still pressed into the felt lining.

”Why would all of these be gone?” Kael wondered aloud.

The question wasn’t rhetorical. Every hidden cache his father had built, the ones only Kael knew about because he had watched his father use them as a boy. Hundreds of texts. Pre-migration records. Encrypted correspondence in the dead script from the parchment. All of it.

”There’s no way...” He trailed off, already moving.

He walked to the center of the vault where a mosaic covered the floor in a geometric pattern of interlocking scales. Black and gold obsidian, laid by the original builders. Every person who had entered this vault had stepped on it without a second thought.

Kael crouched. His fingers found the third scale from the center, the one that was slightly darker than its neighbors by a shade so subtle it required knowing it was there. He pressed the scale, held for three seconds, then twisted it clockwise.

A section of the floor exhaled. Stone sank by two inches in a perfect square, then slid beneath the adjacent tiles, revealing a shallow compartment lined in lead.

Inside: jewels and two scrolls.

Kael picked up the scrolls carefully, and handed both to Jaxon.

”There used to be hundreds down here.” He straightened, brushing dust from his knees. ”Whoever cleaned this vault knew every hiding place.”
