Sacrificed To The Triplet Alpha Kings

Thalia’s latest trap. Thalia’s latest game.

But at least now she knew what she was facing.

Victoria left the ice structure and stood in the howling snow.

She needed to get back to the swamp. Needed to find the guardian. Needed to make a deal that would cost her years of her life but give her passage to the only place Thalia could be found.

She drew another portal circle in the snow.

This time targeting the swamp territories. The specific location where she had met the guardian before.

The portal opened, green and swirling and Victoria stepped through.

The frozen north disappeared.

And Victoria found herself back in the humid darkness of the southern swamp.

The transition from frozen north to humid swamp was jarring.

Victoria’s warming magic was suddenly too much. She released it and immediately felt sweat break out across her skin as her body adjusted to the dramatic temperature change.

The swamp was dark. Night had fallen while she was in the north.

Which meant....

Victoria checked the time with a quick spell.

Twenty-eight hours since Lilith died.

One hundred sixteen hours remaining.

Less than five days now.

And she still had not even reached the Underworld yet.

Victoria forced herself to breathe through the panic.

She was in the right place now. The swamp where the guardian had appeared before. She just needed to call it again. Make the deal. Get passage.

”Guardian!” Victoria called into the darkness. ”I’m ready to make the deal! I need passage to the Underworld!”

Her voice echoed across the dark water and died in the fog.

For a long moment, nothing happened.

Then the water began to move.

Not rippling. Rising. Forming into the shape Victoria remembered...humanoid but made entirely of black water and reflected light.

The guardian stood on the surface of the swamp and looked at her with eyes darker than the night around them.

”Witch,” it said. ”You return.”

”I’m ready,” Victoria said. ”Passage to the Underworld. Five years of my life in exchange. That was the deal.”

The guardian tilted its head. ”The deal was passage and guidance. But much has changed since we last spoke. The price has increased.”

Victoria felt ice slide down her spine. ”What? No. We agreed....”

”We agreed before you wasted a day searching false locations,” the guardian interrupted. ”Before you let desperation make you careless. Before time became your enemy instead of just your constraint.”

”What do you want?” Victoria asked.

The guardian was silent for a moment. Then: ”Seven years. And a memory.”

”What memory?” Victoria asked carefully.

”One of your choosing,” the guardian said. ”Something precious. Something you value. A memory of love or joy or peace. Payment for passage to a realm that devours such things.”

Seven years of her life and a precious memory.

Victoria thought about Lilith lying dead in the estate. Thought about the one hundred sixteen hours remaining. Thought about how she had already committed to crossing every line necessary.

”Done,” Victoria said.

The guardian smiled. ”Then come, witch. The Underworld awaits.”

It extended one hand made of water.

Victoria took it and the world dissolved.

Not into darkness this time. Into something worse. Into spaces between spaces. Into the sensation of falling through reality itself.

Victoria felt the guardian’s magic wrap around her....cold and alien and absolutely ancient. Felt it pulling her down. Deeper. Into places the living were not meant to go.

The passage felt like drowning and suffocating and freezing all at once.

And then....

Solid ground beneath her feet.

She stumbled and fell to her knees on stone that felt wrong. Too smooth. Too cold. Like it had never been touched by sunlight.

She looked up.

The Underworld.

It was not what she had expected.

Not fire and brimstone. Not torture and screaming. Not the hell depicted in human mythology.

It was grey.

Everything was grey.

The sky....if it could be called a sky, was flat grey without sun or stars or any source of light. Yet somehow she could see. Somehow there was illumination that came from nowhere and everywhere at once.

The ground was grey stone stretching in every direction. Smooth and featureless except for occasional cracks that glowed faintly with something that might have been light or might have been something else.

And in the distance...

Shapes.

Structures that looked like buildings but wrong somehow. Twisted. Distorted. Like they had been built by something that understood architecture but did not understand how the living actually used space.

”Welcome to the outer territories,” the guardian said. It still looked like water but now it seemed more solid. More real. ”This is where the newly dead arrive before being sorted. Where souls wait for judgment. Where the lost wander endlessly.”

Victoria stood slowly and looked around with growing dread.

This place felt wrong on a fundamental level. Like reality operated on different rules here. Like time and space were suggestions rather than laws.

”Where is Thalia?” Victoria asked.

”Deeper,” the guardian said. ”The outer territories are just the entrance. Your cousin hides in the middle realms. Where entities make deals and power flows freely. Where the desperate trade pieces of themselves for things they should not have.”

”How do I get there?” She asked.

”You walk,” the guardian said simply. ”Follow the paths. Don’t step on the cracks. Don’t speak to the wandering souls unless they speak first. Don’t accept gifts from anything that offers them. And most importantly, don’t lose track of time. What feels like hours here could be days in the mortal realm. You must leave before your deadline expires or you will be trapped here with no way back.”

Victoria felt her chest tighten. ”How will I know when to leave?”

The guardian reached out and touched her wrist.

Cold spread from the point of contact. Victoria looked down and saw a mark forming on her skin....a symbol that looked like an hourglass with grains of sand falling.

”This will track your remaining time,” the guardian said. ”When the last grain falls, you have no time left. You must leave before that happens or stay forever.”
