A Psychopath Reborn as a Third-rate Villain

The messenger bowed and withdrew from the hall.

Evelyne remained beside the table, the imperial letter open before her. Her expression was thoughtful, measured.

The Empire had developed a device capable of assessing a dungeon’s current rank and intended to standardize its use. By evaluating monster strength, mana density, spatial stability, environmental conditions, and the central structure, the device classified a dungeon as E, D, C, B, A, or S rank. The assessment, however, reflected only the dungeon’s condition at the moment of examination. Any subsequent change could alter its rank. The device reduced uncertainty; it did not guarantee safety.

That distinction mattered. A tool that reduced uncertainty was valuable. A tool that encouraged people to mistake assessment for certainty could become dangerous.

The Empire planned to manufacture the devices on a larger scale and convene a meeting of the great noble houses to establish the rules governing their use—exploration rights, responsibilities, deployment of forces, and the distribution of recovered resources. Every house would negotiate for the greatest possible advantage.

House Darkmoor’s recent encounter with an S-Rank dungeon made the matter particularly relevant. Their experience could prove useful to the Empire, but it also placed them under closer scrutiny. That attention could become either an advantage or a liability, depending on how the negotiations unfolded.

Evelyne had no intention of deciding which before she understood the situation more thoroughly.

A faint smile touched her lips.

The Empire was no longer merely responding to dungeon threats. It was building a system through which dungeons could be assessed, explored, and managed. Wherever a system determined access, responsibility, and ownership, power followed. The real struggle would concern who received permission to explore, which forces entered, and who claimed the resources within.

The great houses would speak of safety and the Empire’s interests. Those concerns would not necessarily be insincere. They simply would not be the whole truth. Every house would protect its own interests. None would willingly surrender an opportunity that might strengthen a rival.

House Darkmoor would be no different.

Evelyne would ensure the family’s involvement worked in their favor. She had no intention of letting the Empire or the other noble houses dictate the limits of their opportunities. The coming meeting would shape more than exploration procedures. It could influence the distribution of power for years to come. And she intended for House Darkmoor to help shape that future rather than accept whatever others decided.

Morning light streamed through the tall windows of Ambrose Academy.

Inside Class A, students settled into their seats as Professor Elowen entered. She placed several books on her desk before turning toward the class.

”Today we will examine several Third Circle spells. Pay attention not only to their effects, but also to the structures that produce them. Understanding what a spell does is important. Understanding how it works is what allows you to reproduce it.”

Elowen raised her hand. Mana gathered around her fingertips, forming an intricate magic circle. A central core took shape first, followed by several smaller structures connected through narrow pathways. As the formation rotated, mana circulated through its components.

A sharp gust swept across the classroom. A concentrated blade of wind shot toward a reinforced training target.

CRACK!

A deep, clean cut appeared across its surface.

”This is Wind Blade, a Third Circle wind spell. It concentrates mana into a narrow cutting force. The surrounding pathways regulate the flow and maintain precision. If the circulation becomes unstable, the spell may lose power or collapse entirely.”

Her gaze swept the classroom.

”Who would like to attempt it?”

Seraphina raised her hand.

”May I try, Professor?”

”Of course.”

She stood and extended her hand. Mana gathered. A magic circle formed with remarkable speed—central structure first, then the surrounding pathways connecting one by one.

A blade of wind shot forward.

CRACK!

A second cut appeared beside the first.

The classroom fell silent.

Seraphina lowered her hand and returned to her seat.

Elowen glanced at the target.

”Have you studied this spell before?”

”I’ve studied its formula, Professor, but I haven’t practiced casting it.”

”I see.”

That made the result more noteworthy. Seraphina had understood the formula well enough to construct and control it on her first attempt. Still, Wind Blade was an established spell. A diligent student could learn it through study.

Elowen had something more challenging in mind.

”Let us try a different type of spell.”

She raised her hand again. This time the circle was more intricate—pathways intersecting near the core, smaller formations occupying the outer ring. Once complete, she activated it.

A transparent barrier materialized. Multiple layers of mana rotated across its surface in opposing directions while remaining stable.

”This is Aegis Barrier, a Third Circle defensive spell. Its effectiveness depends on the interaction between the inner and outer structures. Excess mana in one section can make the formation inefficient. Insufficient circulation in another can weaken the whole barrier. Defensive magic is not simply a matter of gathering more mana. The structure must distribute it correctly.”

She dismissed the barrier.

”Would you like to try this one as well, Seraphina?”

Seraphina nodded. Once again the circle formed cleanly. Pathways connected in sequence. Mana flowed without fluctuation. A transparent barrier appeared and held steady for several seconds before she released it.

Elowen’s expression shifted slightly. Reproducing two different Third Circle spells with such precision was impressive.

But she had one final demonstration.

”The spells I have shown you so far are established formulas. Magic, however, is not limited to what has already been recorded.”

Mana gathered again, forming a circle unlike the previous two. Interconnected rings surrounded a central core. Pathways overlapped before separating, creating an arrangement difficult to follow. The outer rings rotated. At the center a sphere of condensed energy formed, then compressed into a narrow luminous projectile.

Elowen directed it at the target. It struck with a sharp impact, leaving a small hole in the reinforced surface.

”This is a Third Circle spell I developed myself. I have neither published its formula nor taught it to another student.”

Her gaze settled on Seraphina.

”Would you like to attempt it?”

”Yes, Professor.”

Seraphina stood and extended her hand. For a moment she remained still, following the last traces of the formation. Then mana gathered. The circle emerged—core first, then the surrounding rings. The unusual pathways connected in nearly the same arrangement.

The outer rings rotated. Mana compressed inward. A luminous sphere took shape.

The outermost ring flickered. Circulation wavered.

Seraphina adjusted the flow. The ring steadied. The mana narrowed into a projectile.

She released it.

BANG!

A second hole appeared in the target.

Unlike Elowen’s version, Seraphina’s faded almost immediately after impact. A faint distortion had passed through its structure just before release, leaving the spell slightly less stable than the original.

The difference was small.

But it was there.

Silence followed.

Elowen stared at the target, then at Seraphina. For the first time her composure gave way to clear surprise.

”Tell me something, Seraphina. How did you understand the structure?”

Seraphina considered the question.

”I watched how the mana moved through the different pathways. The outer rings seemed to regulate the compression, while the inner structure maintained the projectile’s shape. The overlapping pathways were the most difficult part. I had to infer which sections regulated the flow and which maintained the formation itself.”

Her gaze shifted to the target.

”My version wasn’t quite as stable as yours. I think the circulation around the outer ring was slightly inefficient.”

Elowen’s expression changed again.

Not only had Seraphina reproduced an unpublished spell after observing it once, she had also identified the imperfection in her own execution. She had not memorized the shape of the circle. She had reconstructed the principles holding it together.

”Remarkable.”

A genuine smile appeared on Elowen’s face.

”You possess an extraordinary talent for magic. Your comprehension and control are far beyond what I would normally expect from someone your age. If you continue developing at this pace, you may become one of the greatest magical talents of your generation.”

Seraphina lowered her head slightly.

”Thank you, Professor.”

”Remember that talent is only the beginning. Understanding a spell is one thing. Mastering it requires practice, patience, and the ability to recognize your own mistakes.”

”I will.”

Seraphina returned to her seat.

The lesson continued, though several students occasionally glanced her way. The demonstration had left little doubt about the gap between her and the rest of the class.

Andras remained silent.

He had watched every spell carefully, paying particular attention to the relationships between components and the movement of mana.

Seraphina’s performance confirmed what he had already suspected. Her talent was not limited to learning spells quickly. She could observe an unfamiliar structure, identify the functions of its components, and infer how they interacted. Where other mages required repeated demonstrations or detailed explanations, she reached the same understanding after a single observation.

That was the true value of the Celestial Codex. An S-Rank ability of this caliber did more than accelerate learning. It changed how its wielder approached magic.

Yet there remained an important distinction.

Understanding a spell’s structure was not the same as reproducing it reliably.

Seraphina had demonstrated both extraordinary comprehension and the control necessary to reproduce the formations. Even so, her version of Elowen’s unpublished spell had been slightly less stable than the original. The difference was small, but it mattered.

Comprehension could reveal how a formation was supposed to work. Execution determined whether it actually worked as intended.

For most mages the distance between those two things was considerable.

Andras knew that distinction better than most. He could understand the principles behind a formation and still struggle to reproduce it. A pathway that appeared simple in theory could interfere with another once mana began circulating. Correcting one section might destabilize another, turning a minor adjustment into a chain of complications.

His problem was not simply a lack of understanding. He needed to translate that understanding into reliable execution.

Seraphina’s talent allowed her to bridge that gap with astonishing ease. His own experience had taught him how difficult it could be. He would have to find a way to overcome it without relying on the same advantage.

---

The lesson eventually ended. Elowen dismissed the class. Students gathered their belongings, conversations quickly returning to Seraphina’s demonstration.

Andras stood and adjusted his uniform.

Seraphina glanced toward him.

”What did you think?”

”You performed well.”

She tilted her head.

”That’s all?”

”What else would you like me to say?”

Seraphina studied him for a moment before sighing.

”Nothing.”

Andras offered no further comment. Her performance was impressive. There was no reason to deny it. Exaggerated praise would add nothing.

The next class was Weapon Mastery. While Seraphina left with the other students focusing on magic, Andras remained. He followed Professor Kaelen’s instructions, practiced controlled movements, refined his stance, and corrected several minor inefficiencies. The lesson offered little new information, but he used the time productively.

By the time it ended, his thoughts had already moved forward.

He would not waste time restating the problem. He already understood it.

What remained was to solve it.

Andras returned to Room Three.

There was still work to do.
