A Psychopath Reborn as a Third-rate Villain

They passed through the academy gates just as the last traces of daylight were fading from the sky. The lanterns along the main path had already been lit, casting steady pools of warm light across the stone. Most of the students who had left for the day had already returned; the usual evening quiet of the residential district was beginning to settle in.

When they reached Seraphina’s door, she stopped and turned to face him.

”I’ll see you tomorrow,” she said.

Andras nodded. ”Tomorrow.”

She opened the door. Just before stepping inside, his voice reached her again.

”I hope you enjoyed today.”

Seraphina looked back at him. For a brief moment her expression was difficult to read. Then she answered, quietly but clearly,

”I did.”

The door closed behind her.

Andras stood there for a second longer before turning and walking the short distance to his own room. He knocked once. The door opened almost immediately.

Lyra stood on the other side, her expression politely attentive as always—though there was a faint trace of something sharper in her eyes.

”Young Master, you’re late.”

Andras stepped inside. ”I was with Seraphina.”

Lyra closed the door behind him. ”How was your day?”

He considered the question for a moment.

”Better than I expected.”

Lyra studied him briefly, then simply nodded. She did not press further. Andras preferred it that way.

He bathed, changed into cleaner clothes, and joined her for a quiet dinner. Conversation remained light and practical. Afterward he returned to his room, settled onto the bed, and allowed the residual impressions of the day to fade. Sleep came without difficulty.

---

Morning arrived with the usual clarity of the academy’s schedule.

Andras rose, dressed in the standard uniform, and ate a simple breakfast before leaving for class. The corridors of the academic building were already filling with students. Conversations drifted through the air—complaints about assignments, speculation about upcoming lessons, the ordinary noise of another school day.

When he entered Class A, most of the seats were still empty. He took his usual place near the middle of the room and waited.

As the minutes passed, students filtered in. Conversations rose and fell around him. Yet even as the start of the lesson approached, a noticeable number of chairs remained unoccupied.

Andras counted them absently.

Fifteen.

For the first time since classes had begun, that many seats were empty in a Spell Casting lesson. It was not difficult to guess why. Most of them were warriors who had decided not to focus on spell casting.

Andras filed the observation away without particular concern.

A few minutes later, Seraphina entered.

She looked as composed as ever. Her silver-blonde hair was neatly arranged, her posture straight, her expression calm. To anyone who had not spent the previous day with her, nothing would have seemed different.

Andras noticed the small changes immediately.

Her gaze lingered on him half a second longer than usual before she looked away. When she sat down beside him, the distance between their chairs felt slightly more deliberate. She did not greet him with the same easy neutrality as before. There was a faint, carefully controlled awareness in the way she settled into her seat.

”Good morning,” she said.

”Good morning.”

A short silence followed.

”You slept well?” she asked, her tone light.

”Well enough,” Andras replied. ”You?”

”Adequately.”

The exchange was simple, but the undercurrent was not.

---

From several seats behind them, Romeo Ravenhart watched the brief interaction in silence.

He could not hear what they were saying. The distance and the low murmur of the filling classroom made their words impossible to catch. All he could see was the way Seraphina’s gaze lingered a fraction longer than necessary, and the quiet familiarity in the way Andras responded.

His fingers tapped once against the side of his desk.

Yesterday, one of the students from another class had mentioned—almost casually—that Andras Darkmoor and Seraphina Valebright had spent the entire rest day together outside the academy.

A faint, unpleasant feeling settled in his chest.

Jealousy was not an emotion he particularly enjoyed acknowledging.

He looked away and leaned back in his seat, expression carefully neutral as the last students took their places.

---

A moment later, the classroom door opened.

The room gradually fell silent.

Professor Elowen entered. She walked toward the front of the classroom with her usual calm expression and placed her materials on the desk. Then she turned toward the board, picked up a piece of chalk, and wrote a single word:

SPELL

Underneath it, she added:

Structure → Mana Flow → Function → Effect

She stepped back and turned toward the class.

”Last lesson, I told you that mana alone cannot create magic.” Her gaze moved across the room. ”Today, I want you to understand why.”

She raised her hand. Mana gathered around her fingertips, forming a faint glow. Then she drew a magic circle in the air. The structure was simple—a central point surrounded by several interconnected patterns.

”Every spell has a structure.”

She pointed toward the center.

”This is the core. The core determines the primary phenomenon the spell is attempting to produce.”

A small movement of her fingers produced a steady flame above her palm.

”For a fire spell, the core establishes the conditions necessary for heat and combustion.”

The flame vanished.

”For a wind spell, it would establish the manipulation of air.” A light current moved through the classroom. ”For water, it would establish the manipulation and formation of water.”

Elowen then pointed toward the lines surrounding the core.

”These are the mana pathways. They determine how mana travels through the spell. Mana must move through the structure in a controlled manner. If the flow is disrupted, the spell becomes unstable.”

She indicated another section.

”This is the control structure. It determines how the caster interacts with the spell after activation.”

Then she pointed toward the outer portion.

”The output structure determines how the spell manifests.”

Finally, she touched the outermost ring.

”And the stability structure prevents the spell from collapsing.”

Elowen lowered her hand.

”The exact structure differs depending on the spell. But the principles remain similar.”

A student raised his hand. ”Professor, are these structures the same for every mage?”

”No,” Elowen replied. ”And not every spell requires the same arrangement. Think of a spell as a machine. The components have different functions. If one component is changed, the entire result can change.”

Andras’s eyes narrowed slightly.

That was more interesting.

Elowen raised her hand again. A larger magic circle appeared—one the students immediately recognized as a basic fireball. She allowed mana to flow into it. A compact ball of flame formed above her palm, steady and controlled.

Then she deliberately altered one of the mana pathways.

The fireball flickered. A moment later it twisted violently and expanded, heat rushing outward across the front rows. Several students instinctively leaned back.

Elowen closed her hand. The spell vanished.

Silence settled over the room.

”That was one mistake,” she said calmly. She recreated the same circle and tapped the altered section. ”The difference between a beginner and an expert isn’t simply the amount of mana they possess. It’s knowing what happens when you change something.”

Andras stared at the lingering outline of the magic circle.

The change had been extremely small. The effect had been significant. That meant the structure was not merely a container for mana. Every component had a specific purpose. Every pathway affected the final result.

If that was true, then spells were not fixed formulas.

They were constructions.

And anything constructed could, in theory, be modified.

Elowen continued.

”Many students make the mistake of believing that stronger spells simply require more mana. That is only partially true. Efficiency matters. Control matters. Structure matters. Understanding matters.”

Her gaze moved across the room, briefly settling on the remaining warrior-path students as well as the mages.

”This applies regardless of whether you are a mage or a warrior. Warriors are fully capable of learning spell casting. Their primary path may be Battle Energy, but that does not prevent them from learning how to manipulate mana. Likewise, a mage should not assume that learning magic makes them incapable of developing other forms of strength.”

She looked over the class one final time.

”The academy teaches you many disciplines because strength does not have to exist within a single path.”

Andras remained silent.

He already knew that.

But Elowen’s explanation had given him something more useful—a way to think about magic not as a collection of fixed spells, but as a system. He looked at the magic circle still faintly visible on the board. Most of the students were trying to memorize its appearance. Andras was studying its logic.

There was a difference.

Elowen’s gaze moved across the room and settled on him.

She still remembered how interesting Andras Darkmoor had been during the entrance examination. In her first lesson, however, he had looked almost bored. That had been understandable—much of what she had covered then was material most Class A students already knew. Today was different. Today, he was paying attention.

”Andras,” she said.

He looked up. ”Yes, Professor.”

”You seem particularly interested.”

”I am.”

”Do you have a question?”

Andras looked at the magic circle again. Then he spoke.

”If the structure determines the spell’s function, why are most spells taught using fixed structures?”
