Serah was staring at her pad. The data scrolling across the holographic display had stabilized into a pattern she recognized. ”The array is self-sustaining at baseline. The pylons are charging from ambient Essence faster than they’re consuming it. The focus is maintaining synchronization with your heartbeat without your direct input.”

She looked up. ”It’s alive. Not metaphorically. It’s drawing power, processing energy, maintaining its own operation. It’s a living system.”

”Then why does it need me?”

”Because the healing function requires your Clearwater resonance as a catalyst. The array can sustain itself. But to dissolve and reform tissue, it needs you to initiate the process. You’re the trigger. The array is the amplifier.”

Tobias had moved to the chamber entrance, watching the light grow through the holes in the ceiling. ”Dawn patrol. Fifteen minutes.”

Alvian looked at the array. The pylons hummed. The focus pulsed. The copper channels glowed faintly with flowing energy. It was beautiful. It was terrifying.

Because the first activation would be the test.

Would the dissolution-and-reformation process work on living tissue? If the molecular templates were misread, if the dissolution was too aggressive, if the reformation was incomplete...

The risk was real. And the only way to test was to try it on someone wounded.

”We need to leave,” Tobias said. ”Now.”

Alvian took one last look at the array. The chord hummed through his bones. The focus pulsed with his heartbeat. The circuit glowed with energy that was, in every way that mattered, an extension of his own Talent.

’Eight pylons became twelve. A broken slab became a heart. A ruined floor became a circuit. All from scrap and crystal and a dead man’s materials.’

’Now I just have to make it heal someone without killing them.’

They left through the service tunnels as the first patrol guards crossed the Academy courtyard above them. The array hummed in the darkness behind them, alive and waiting.

Three days passed before Alvian could return.

Not because he chose to wait. Because his body forced him to. The sustained Molecular Forge work had drained him in ways that Essence potions couldn’t fix. His Talent pathways ached. His bones hummed with residual dissolution energy that made his skin feel like it was vibrating. Serah confined him to Tobias’s hut and forced him to eat and sleep and do nothing else for seventy two hours.

”You are not a machine,” she said each time he tried to stand. ”Your Talent pathways need to recover. If you activate the array while your resonance is unstable, you could kill the first patient you try to heal.”

He hated every minute of it. But he stayed down. Because she was right.

On the fourth morning, his Essence had regenerated to full. His Talent pathways had settled. The vibration in his bones had faded to background hum. He was ready.

Helen Croft was waiting for them at the medical wing entrance.

The instructor looked worse than the last time Alvian had seen her. Her rib wound from the Calamity Rift had healed imperfectly, leaving her left side stiff and her breathing slightly labored. Her missing ear had never been replaced. The scar across her jaw stood out pale against skin that hadn’t seen enough sunlight.

But her eyes were sharp. And her expression was something Alvian couldn’t read in a single glance.

Suspicion. Wariness. And underneath both, something that might have been hope.

”I heard what you’re building,” she said. No greeting. No preamble. Helen Croft had never been a woman who wasted words. ”The staff thinks you’re insane. The Crown still wants you arrested, even if they can’t enforce it. And I have forty-three students who will die within the week if their injuries aren’t treated by something stronger than field medicine.”

She turned and started walking. ”Follow me.”

The converted dormitory was three buildings over from the medical wing. The Academy had crammed cots into rows where students used to sleep eight to a room. Now the wounded lay two to a bed, some barely conscious, others staring at the ceiling with the flat eyes of people who had given up.

The smell hit Alvian first. Antiseptic and blood and something else underneath. Something chemical. Dimensional corruption has a smell. Like burnt copper and ozone and something sweet that shouldn’t be sweet.

He walked down the rows. He processed what he was seeing.

Crystalline shard wounds that refused to heal normally. The dimensional energy in the shards kept the tissue from closing, kept the wounds open and weeping fluid that wasn’t quite blood. Dissolved tissue that regenerated incorrectly. Flesh that tried to regrow but formed the wrong structures, wrong cell types, wrong everything. Essence burns that had destabilized Talent pathways. Students whose Talents flickered and stuttered like a lamp with a bad connection.

Standard healing didn’t work because the injuries weren’t physical. They were dimensional. The damage existed at the molecular level, in the bonds between cells, in the connections between tissue and dimensional space.

”Show me the worst case,” Alvian said.

Helen led him to a cot near the window. A girl lay there. Seventeen, maybe. Her face was pale and drawn, dark circles under her eyes. Her left arm lay across her chest, wrapped in bandages that were damp with something that wasn’t blood.

The arm was wrong.

It was there. Physically present. The skin was intact, the fingers were visible. But the arm shimmered slightly, like a heat haze. When Alvian looked closer, he could see that the flesh existed in layers. Some layers were solid. Some were translucent. Some flickered between visible and invisible.

”This is Elara Voss,” Helen said. ”D-Rank Verdant Growth Talent. A Voidcrawler phased through her arm during the Rift. The arm is intact but the tissue has been dimensionally displaced. Her flesh exists partially in standard space and partially in an adjacent dimension.”

”The arm is intangible,” Serah said, scanning with her circuitry pad. ”She can’t grip anything. She can’t feel anything below the elbow. And the displacement is spreading.”

”How fast?” Alvian asked.

”Point three centimeters per day. It started at the hand. It’s reached the forearm. In two weeks, it’ll reach her shoulder. In a month, it’ll reach her chest.” Serah looked at him. ”In six weeks, it’ll reach her heart.”

Elara’s eyes were wide. She had been listening. She had heard the timeline.

”Can you fix it?” she asked. Her voice was barely a whisper. ”They say you can dissolve things. That you dissolved a Duke’s heart. Can you dissolve this back to normal?”

’They say you can dissolve things. They don’t know the half of it.’

Alvian looked at her arm. The displacement was exactly the kind of injury his array was designed to treat. Dimensional damage. Tissue that existed in the wrong space. The template was still there in her DNA. The original arm still existed in dimensional memory. The array could dissolve the displaced tissue, read the template, and reform it in standard space.

In theory.

”We’re going to try,” he said. ”I need you on a stretcher.”

Helen signaled two orderlies. They lifted Elara onto a stretcher with practiced efficiency, trying not to jostle the shimmering arm. The girl’s eyes never left Alvian’s face.

They carried her across the courtyard. Past the rubble. Through the gap in the collapsed wall. Into the medical wing’s ruins, where twelve pylons hummed their complete chord and a central focus pulsed with blue light.

Elara saw the array and her breath caught. ”What is that?”

”Your treatment,” Alvian said.

The orderlies positioned the stretcher at the array’s center, directly beside the focus. The crystal sphere pulsed faster when Alvian approached. Recognition. Anticipation.

Serah took her position at the array’s edge, pad ready to record everything. Tobias stood guard at the entrance. Helen Croft watched from the doorway, her expression unreadable.

Alvian knelt beside Elara. The girl was trembling. Not from cold. From fear. She had heard the stories about him. The boy who dissolved a Duke’s heart. The boy who caught a titan’s fist. The boy the Crown called an enemy.

”I need you to hold still,” he said. ”This will feel strange. The array is going to dissolve the displaced tissue and rebuild it. You might feel tingling. You might feel warmth. You might feel nothing at all. But you need to hold still.”

”Will it hurt?”
