The northern border of the capital had never been so crowded.

For several days, people had been arriving from villages destroyed by floods, drought, famine, and war.

Some carried bundles on their backs.

Some pushed wooden carts.

Some walked barefoot.

Some carried children who were too weak to walk.

Others had nothing except the clothes on their bodies.

The capital had become a temporary stopping point for thousands of displaced families hoping to continue northward.

The northern lands were still fertile.

There were rivers.

Open fields.

Abandoned villages that could be rebuilt.

The government had therefore opened a migration route for common people willing to settle there.

At the migration counter, officials worked from sunrise until sunset.

Names were recorded.

Families were questioned.

Documents were checked.

Those who qualified received a migration slip allowing them to travel north under government protection.

That morning, the line seemed endless.

An elderly man stood with his grandson.

Behind him was a family carrying sacks of grain.

A young woman held a sleeping baby against her chest.

Several men were arguing with an official about the number of people allowed on one cart.

The atmosphere was exhausted but hopeful.

Everyone wanted the same thing.

A place where they could begin again.

Then—

A strange family appeared at the edge of the road.

People began looking.

At first, nobody paid much attention.

It was only an old woman.

She walked slowly with a wooden walking stick.

Her gray hair was neatly tied.

Her clothes were plain.

Not luxurious.

Not torn either.

Beside her walked three young women and three young men.

All six were remarkably clean despite having supposedly traveled a long distance.

They were not dressed like wealthy nobles.

Their clothes were simple cotton and linen.

Yet there was something different about them.

Their posture.

Their movements.

Their expressions.

They carried themselves with a quiet dignity that ordinary villagers rarely possessed.

Behind them was a large wooden cart.

Bundles were stacked neatly from one end to the other.

The bundles were covered with old cloth.

Several wooden boxes were tied beneath them.

At first, people assumed they were merchants.

Perhaps they had come to sell goods to the starving families.

A child tugged at his mother’s sleeve.

”Mother, are they merchants?”

The woman looked toward the cart.

”Perhaps.”

A man standing nearby whispered,

”They brought a lot of things.”

Another laughed.

”Maybe they are here to sell food.”

The three young men continued pulling the cart.

None of them spoke.

The elderly woman walked in front.

Her walking stick tapped against the ground.

Tap.

She finally reached the migration counter.

One of the officials looked up.

”Next family.”

The old woman stepped forward.

The official glanced at her.

”How many people?”

The old woman looked behind her.

”Seven.”

The official counted.

The old woman.

Three young men.

Three young women.

Seven.

”Relationship?”

The old woman’s fingers tightened around her walking stick.

For the briefest moment, her expression changed.

Then she smiled gently.

”They are my family.”

The official dipped his brush into ink.

”Names?”

Before the old woman could answer, one of the young men stepped forward.

”I will register.”

The official nodded.

”Fine.”

The young man approached the desk.

He looked calm.

Too calm.

The official noticed the man’s hands.

There were calluses.

Not the kind created by farming.

They were old sword calluses.

The official raised his eyebrows.

”Occupation?”

The young man answered naturally.

”Former soldier.”

The official looked at him again.

”Former?”

”Yes.”

”Why did you leave?”

The young man lowered his eyes.

”My family lost our home.”

The official said nothing.

He continued writing.

Behind him, the other two young men waited quietly.

One was slightly older and carried himself with an unmistakable authority.

The other appeared more scholarly.

The three women stood beside the old woman.

The first was elegant even in simple clothing.

The second looked gentle but carried herself with the calm confidence of someone accustomed to responsibility.

The third had a sharper expression and seemed particularly observant.

The official looked at them.

”Your wives?”

The young man nodded.

”Two are wives.”

He paused.

”The third is my sister.”

The official looked toward the old woman.

”And she?”

”My mother.”

The old woman smiled.

”That is correct.”

The official continued writing.

Then he asked,

”Where did you come from?”

The old woman’s expression became slightly sorrowful.

”From the eastern region.”

”Which village?”

The old woman gave the name of a village.

The official frowned.

”That village was destroyed.”

”Yes.”

”Flood?”

”Flood first.”

She lowered her eyes.

”Then famine.”

The official’s expression softened.

”How did you survive?”

The old woman took a breath.

”We left.”

The official looked at the bundles.

”Are those your belongings?”

”Everything we have left.”

The official looked at the cart again.

It was surprisingly full.

Yet the old woman had described herself as having lost almost everything.

He pointed toward it.

”What is inside?”

The old woman answered quietly.

”Clothes.”

”Food?”

”A little.”

”Tools?”

”Some.”

”Furniture?”

”No.”

”Money?”

The old woman shook her head.

”Very little.”

The official studied her.

There was something strange about this family.

They had almost nothing.

Yet they were extraordinarily composed.

He turned toward the eldest young man.

”Who was your father?”

The man’s jaw tightened.

”My father was a merchant.”

”Merchant?”

”Yes.”

”Where is he?”

”Dead.”

The official lowered his voice.

”I’m sorry.”

The young man bowed his head.

”He left debts.”

That made the official pause.

”Debts?”

The young man nodded.

”Large debts.”

”Did you inherit them?”

”We inherited his responsibility.”

The official looked at the old woman.

She nodded.

”My husband was an honest merchant,” she said. ”He borrowed money to keep his business alive when the floods destroyed his warehouses.”

Her voice remained steady.

”But he died before he could repay everything.”

”And you repaid it?”

”We did.”

The official stared.

”All of it?”

The eldest young man answered.

”Every coin.”

The official looked at the family’s belongings again.

”And after repaying the debt?”

The old woman smiled bitterly.

”We had almost nothing left.”

A few people standing nearby had begun listening.

One elderly farmer whispered,

”At least they kept their honor.”

Another nodded.

”Better to lose money than carry a dead man’s debt.”

The old woman lowered her head.

”My husband always told us that a family can rebuild wealth.”

She paused.

”But once people lose trust in their name, rebuilding it is much harder.”

The official’s expression softened further.

”How much property remains?”

The old woman looked toward the cart.

”That.”

The official stared.

”Everything?”

”Everything.”

He was about to ask another question when a middle-aged female official approached.

She had been overseeing the migration registrations from another table.

She had noticed the crowd forming.

”What happened?”

The male official stood.

”This family is requesting migration to the northern settlement.”

The woman looked at them.

”All seven?”

”Yes.”

She stepped closer.

Her eyes moved over the old woman.

Then the young men.

Then the women.

Something about them bothered her.

Not because they looked suspicious.

Because they looked too refined.

She had seen nobles attempting to disguise themselves before.

She knew the difference between poverty and someone pretending to be poor.

She studied the eldest young man’s posture.

Then his wife.

Then the middle son.

Then his wife.

Finally, the daughter and her husband.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

”You are not ordinary villagers.”

The family became still.

The old woman’s grip tightened around her walking stick.

But she smiled.

”We are simply a family who lost our home.”

The middle-aged official did not smile.

”Your manners say otherwise.”

The eldest young man answered respectfully.

”Hard times do not erase how someone was raised.”

The woman stared at him.

Then unexpectedly—

She smiled.

”Fair answer.”

She looked toward the old woman.

”What is your name?”

The elderly woman hesitated.

Then answered.

”My name is Madam Shen Yue.”

She gave the name calmly.

The official wrote it down.

”Your eldest son?”

The young man stepped forward.

”Shen Rui.”

His wife bowed.

”Shen Lian.”

The official wrote both names.

Then she looked at the middle son.

”Second son?”

”Shen Liang.”

His wife stepped forward.

”Shen Zhi.”

The official paused.

The names were ordinary enough.

She continued.

”Your daughter?”

The young woman stepped forward.

”Shen Chen.”

”And your husband?”

The man beside her bowed.

”Guo Han.”

The official wrote everything.

She looked at them again.

”You said your father was a merchant?”

”Yes.”

”What did he trade?”

”Silk, grain, tea, and medicinal herbs.”

”Was he wealthy?”

The old woman smiled faintly.

”Once.”

”How wealthy?”

”Enough.”

The official understood the meaning.

She did not press further.

Then she asked,

”Why are you going north?”

The old woman looked beyond the gate.

Far in the distance, the road stretched toward the northern provinces.

”We have no home left.”

Her voice became softer.

”We heard land is being offered to displaced families.”

”It is.”

”We want to settle there.”

”You understand that the journey is difficult?”

”Yes.”

”There are long roads.”

”Yes.”

”Some areas are dangerous.”

”We understand.”

”You may have to build your own house.”

”We will.”

”You may have to cultivate your own fields.”

”We will.”

The official looked at the young people.

”All of you agree?”

The eldest son answered immediately.

”We do.”

The middle son nodded.

”So do I.”

The daughter smiled.

”I will go wherever Mother goes.”

Her husband placed a hand lightly on her shoulder.

”We will rebuild together.”

The official looked at them for several moments.

Then she noticed something.

The old woman’s shoes.

They were worn.

But underneath the dirt, the leather was extremely fine.

She looked at the eldest woman’s hands.

No farming calluses.

The middle woman’s hands were similarly smooth.

The youngest woman had the hands of someone who had never spent years working in the fields.

The official understood.

This family had not been peasants.

They had once lived a comfortable life.

Perhaps a very comfortable one.

Yet they were genuinely leaving everything behind.

She looked at the old woman.

”Your husband must have been a respectable man.”

”He was.”

”Then you must have suffered greatly.”

The old woman smiled.

”We suffered.”

She looked at her children.

”But we are still together.”

Her eyes softened.

”That is enough.”

The official’s expression changed.

She suddenly felt embarrassed by her suspicion.

She nodded.

”Wait here.”

She took the registration documents to another table.

The male official followed.

They spoke quietly.

The middle-aged woman whispered,

”Something about them feels unusual.”

The man nodded.

”I noticed.”

”Could they be nobles?”

”Perhaps.”

”Should we investigate?”

He looked back at the family.

The old woman was sitting on a wooden bench.

Her three daughters-in-law and daughter were arranging water for her.

The three men were checking the wheels of their cart.

They worked together naturally.

No one ordered anyone around.

No one complained.

No one pushed ahead.

The man shook his head.

”They have no criminal records.”

”How do you know?”

”I checked the regional registry.”

”Already?”

He nodded.

”Their father’s debt was real.”

”And paid?”

”Every last amount.”

The woman sighed.

”Then perhaps they really are simply starting over.”

The man handed her the documents.

”Give them the migration slip.”

She nodded.

---

The Family’s Secret

While the officials prepared the papers, the seven family members exchanged glances.

None of them spoke.

But they understood each other perfectly.

The old woman was once the Dowager Empress.

Her real identity could not be revealed.

Not here.

Not now.

The man called Shen Rui was none other than the former Emperor.

The woman beside him was the former Empress.

The second son, Shen Liang, was actually Prince Liang.

His wife, Shen Zhi, was once known as Princess Zhi.

The daughter, Shen Chen, was Lady Chen.

And her husband, Guo Han, was a former General.

The world believed the imperial family had disappeared.

They had intentionally allowed that belief to spread.

They needed distance.

Peace.

And time.

The kingdom was undergoing changes.

Remaining in the capital would only attract danger.

So they had chosen a different path.

They would become ordinary people.

They would settle in the north.

Build a house.

Plant crops.

Live quietly.

At least—

That was the plan.

The former Emperor looked toward his mother.

”Mother.”

She glanced at him.

”Do not call me that here.”

He immediately corrected himself.

”Madam.”

She smiled.

”Better.”

The former Empress almost laughed.

The former Prince Liang lowered his voice.

”This feels strange.”

Princess Zhi whispered,

”You’ve never had to stand in a migration line before.”

Liang looked offended.

”Neither have you.”

”I know.”

Lady Chen covered her smile.

General Guo Han quietly said,

”Please stop arguing.”

The former Emperor looked at him.

”You are the only one here who sounds like a general.”

Guo Han sighed.

”That is because everyone else is behaving like children.”

Princess Zhi glared.

”Who are you calling a child?”

Everyone almost laughed.

Only Madam Shen Yue remained serious.

”We are supposed to be poor.”

Everyone immediately became quiet.

She looked at their cart.

”Poor people do not laugh like this while waiting for government approval.”

The former Emperor coughed.

”Understood.”

The former Empress lowered her head to hide her smile.

Madam Shen Yue shook her head.

”All of you.”

But there was affection in her voice.

---

The Migration Slip

The middle-aged official returned.

She held seven papers.

”Your registration has been approved.”

The family stood.

She handed the first slip to the old woman.

”Madam Shen Yue.”

The old woman accepted it with both hands.

”Thank you.”

Then the slips were given to each family member.

The official explained,

”Keep these carefully.”

”They prove your registration.”

”When you reach the northern settlement, present them to the local officer.”

”You will be assigned land according to the available settlement plan.”

The eldest son bowed.

”Thank you.”

The official continued.

”You will be traveling with the next group.”

”When does it leave?”

”Tomorrow morning.”

The old woman nodded.

”We will be ready.”

The official looked at the cart.

”You have enough food?”

”For the journey.”

”Water?”

”Yes.”

”Medicine?”

”Some.”

The official hesitated.

Then she took a small cloth bag from her desk.

She handed it to the old woman.

”Take these.”

The old woman looked inside.

Dried herbs.

Bandages.

Basic medicine.

Her eyes softened.

”Thank you.”

The official smiled.

”The northern road is difficult.”

She glanced at the old woman’s walking stick.

”You should ride whenever possible.”

The former Emperor immediately nodded.

”We will make sure she does.”

The official smiled.

”Good.”

Then she looked at the three young women.

”Take care of your mother.”

All three nodded.

”We will.”

The official stepped back.

”You may go.”

---

The family began moving away from the counter.

The cart wheels creaked.

The old woman’s walking stick tapped against the earth.

Tap.

People watched them leave.

Some whispered.

Some felt sympathy.

Others wondered about their unusual dignity.

But no one knew the truth.

No one knew that the old woman had once lived behind palace walls.

No one knew that the man pulling the cart had once commanded an empire.

No one knew that the quiet woman beside him had once worn a crown.

No one knew that the second son had once been a prince.

No one knew that the women walking beside them had once lived within the imperial palace.

And no one knew that the general pushing the cart had once led thousands of soldiers.

To the people at the northern gate—

They were simply another family escaping disaster.

Another family seeking a place to begin again.

The old woman looked toward the distant northern road.

For the first time in many years—

There was no palace ahead.

No throne.

No court.

No ministers.

No political struggle.

Only an unfamiliar road.

She tightened her grip on her walking stick.

”Let’s go.”

The former Emperor smiled faintly.

”Yes, Mother.”

The former Empress looked toward the northern horizon.

”We will build a new home.”

Prince Liang nodded.

”Together.”

Princess Zhi smiled.

Lady Chen adjusted the bundle on the cart.

General Guo Han pushed from behind.

The seven continued north.

And behind them—

The capital slowly disappeared into the distance.

None of them knew what awaited them.

But for the first time—

They were not walking toward a throne.

They were walking toward a life of their own.

And sometimes, losing everything was the beginning of finding something far more precious.
