By the next morning, the palace no longer felt like the same place.

The sun rose.

The courtyard stones warmed beneath the light.

Servants opened windows, carried water, swept the corridors, prepared breakfast, and hurried from one building to another as they did every ordinary morning.

Yet something had changed.

A whisper had entered the palace.

And once a whisper entered the palace—

It rarely remained a whisper.

At first, it was only one servant speaking to another near the kitchen.

”Did you hear?”

”Hear what?”

”The Empress.”

The second servant immediately looked around.

”Lower your voice.”

”I am only telling you what I heard.”

”What did you hear?”

The first servant leaned closer.

”They say the ministers want Her Majesty punished.”

The other servant’s face changed.

”Punished?”

”She is being blamed for everything strange happening in the palace.”

For several moments, neither spoke.

Then the second servant swallowed.

”Everything?”

The first nodded.

”People disappearing from locked rooms. Strange footsteps at night. Voices where nobody is standing. Lamps going out by themselves. People waking after hearing someone call their name.”

He lowered his voice.

”They say the Empress is behind it.”

The other servant stared at him.

”That doesn’t make sense.”

”I know.”

”Then why are people saying it?”

The first servant gave a helpless shrug.

”Because people are frightened.”

That was how it began.

Not with evidence.

Not with proof.

With fear.

And fear had a way of making even the most ridiculous story sound believable.

---

By midday, the rumor had spread through half the servants’ quarters.

By afternoon, it had reached the laundry workers.

By evening, even the old palace attendants who had served for decades were discussing it in hushed voices.

Some believed the Empress had secretly learned forbidden arts.

Others said she had summoned spirits.

Some whispered that the strange events began because she had returned from the lake after everyone believed she had died.

Others insisted that she had never truly been an ordinary woman.

And there were those who simply listened.

They did not believe.

But they did not dare say so loudly.

Because the palace had always taught its servants one important lesson:

You never knew what was happening behind closed doors.

---

Near the servants’ quarters, three maids sat together while folding freshly washed clothes.

One of them glanced toward the corridor.

”Do you think it’s true?”

The youngest maid frowned.

”What?”

”That Her Majesty is responsible.”

The youngest immediately shook her head.

”No.”

The older maid looked at her.

”You answered very quickly.”

”Because I’ve seen Her Majesty.”

”So?”

”She doesn’t look frightening.”

The older maid gave a quiet laugh.

”You think evil people look frightening?”

The younger maid became silent.

The third maid, who had been listening quietly, finally spoke.

”That’s what everyone keeps saying.”

The others looked at her.

”She looks so gentle,” she continued. ”She speaks kindly to servants. She remembers people’s names. She gives food to people working late. She doesn’t even raise her voice easily.”

She lowered her eyes.

”But...”

”But what?”

The maid hesitated.

”What if that’s exactly why nobody suspects her?”

Silence.

The youngest maid looked uncomfortable.

”Don’t say things like that.”

”Why?”

”Because it sounds cruel.”

The older maid sighed.

”Cruel or not, people are saying it.”

---

Across the palace, a group of kitchen servants were having the same conversation.

One man was chopping vegetables.

Another was washing bowls.

A young helper was carrying baskets of rice.

None of them had actually seen anything.

Yet every one of them had heard something.

”I heard a maid saw a woman walking through a wall.”

”I heard someone heard crying from an empty room.”

”I heard the palace guards found footprints that disappeared halfway down the corridor.”

”I heard the Empress knows how to command ghosts.”

”Who told you that?”

”My cousin’s friend heard it from a palace guard.”

”Which guard?”

”I don’t know.”

”So you don’t know if it’s true.”

”No.”

”Then why repeat it?”

The man shrugged.

”Because everyone is talking about it.”

That answer silenced the room.

Because it was true.

Everyone was talking.

---

The most dangerous part was that nobody knew where the rumor had begun.

There was no single storyteller.

No obvious source.

No person standing in the center declaring that the Empress was guilty.

Instead, the rumor traveled from mouth to mouth.

Each person added one small detail.

A strange sound became a ghost.

A ghost became forbidden magic.

Forbidden magic became the Empress controlling spirits.

And eventually—

The Empress became responsible for every unexplained event in the palace.

That was how rumors grew.

Quietly.

Patiently.

Until they became stronger than facts.

---

That evening, several servants gathered near a small courtyard.

One elderly palace maid shook her head.

”I have served here for thirty years.”

The younger servants looked at her.

”I have seen many rumors.”

She folded her hands.

”Most disappear after a few days.”

”Do you think this one will?”

The old maid looked toward the distant palace buildings.

”I don’t know.”

Her expression became serious.

”But I know one thing.”

”What?”

”People become cruel when they are afraid.”

No one answered.

The old maid continued.

”Yesterday, people were frightened by ghosts.”

”Today, they are frightened by the Empress.”

”Tomorrow, they may become frightened by anyone who disagrees with them.”

---

Near the servants’ sleeping quarters, another conversation was taking place.

A maid whispered,

”They say the ministers want her executed.”

Another servant immediately shushed her.

”Don’t say that.”

”Why?”

”Because if someone hears you talking about it, you’ll be questioned.”

The maid lowered her voice.

”But if the Empress really is behind everything...”

”What?”

”What if she really is dangerous?”

The other servant looked toward the dark corridor.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then he said,

”Have you ever seen her hurt anyone?”

”No.”

”Have you ever seen her perform magic?”

”No.”

”Have you ever seen her command a ghost?”

”No.”

”Then what exactly are you afraid of?”

The maid opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because she didn’t know.

She was afraid because everyone else was afraid.

---

Later that night, a servant carrying a lantern walked alone through a quiet corridor.

His footsteps echoed.

Tap.

He stopped.

Something had moved behind him.

He turned.

Nothing.

His heart began beating faster.

He lifted the lantern.

Empty corridor.

He swallowed.

Then he heard—

”Help...”

He froze.

The voice had sounded like a woman’s.

Very faint.

Very far away.

”Help...”

He immediately ran.

The next morning, he told three people.

By noon, the story had become:

”A ghost tried to warn him.”

By evening:

”The Empress sent a ghost to frighten him.”

By the following morning:

”The Empress is commanding hundreds of spirits.”

Nobody remembered the original story anymore.

---

Inside another servant courtyard, two maids argued.

”She is innocent.”

”You don’t know that.”

”I know enough.”

”You don’t.”

”I have worked near her residence.”

”And?”

”She treats people well.”

”People can pretend.”

The first maid frowned.

”You really believe every kind person is secretly evil?”

”No.”

”Then why her?”

The second maid hesitated.

”Because something has to explain all of this.”

That sentence was repeated throughout the palace.

Something has to explain all of this.

People hated uncertainty.

They wanted an answer.

Even a wrong answer.

And the Empress had become the easiest answer.

---

As night approached, the servants became increasingly nervous.

Several refused to walk alone.

Some slept together in groups.

Others kept lamps burning all night.

One servant even placed protective charms near his sleeping mat.

Another tied a red thread around his wrist.

A third whispered prayers before entering empty rooms.

Nobody laughed at them anymore.

Fear had become too serious.

---

Then came the cruelest part.

People began changing how they spoke about the Empress.

Previously, they had called her gentle.

Kind.

Graceful.

Beautiful.

Now—

”She is too calm.”

”She never seems frightened.”

”Maybe she knows something.”

”She survived when she should have died.”

”Maybe that’s proof.”

”Maybe she has some kind of protection.”

”Maybe she isn’t human.”

Every good quality was turned into evidence against her.

Her calmness became suspicious.

Her kindness became manipulation.

Her survival became proof of supernatural power.

Her silence became guilt.

There was no way for her to win against a rumor like that.

---

One afternoon, a group of servants stood near the courtyard entrance.

They watched the Empress’s residence from a distance.

One whispered,

”She really doesn’t look dangerous.”

Another answered,

”That’s what scares me.”

The first frowned.

”How?”

”She looks completely harmless.”

The second servant lowered his voice.

”But who knows what’s inside a person’s heart?”

The others fell silent.

It was the sentence that had been spreading everywhere.

No one could see another person’s heart.

No one knew what someone truly thought.

And because they couldn’t know—

They began imagining the worst.

---

A young maid who had once received medicine from the Empress overheard them.

She stepped forward.

”Stop.”

Everyone turned.

The maid’s voice trembled.

”But...”

She gathered courage.

”Her Majesty helped me.”

The others stared at her.

”When my mother was sick, I couldn’t afford medicine.”

Her eyes became wet.

”Her Majesty asked why I was crying.”

”She didn’t know me.”

”She had no reason to help me.”

”But she did.”

”She gave me medicine.”

The courtyard became quiet.

”She didn’t ask for anything.”

The maid wiped her eyes.

”So if you want to call her evil...”

Her voice shook.

”...then explain that to me.”

Nobody answered.

One by one, they looked away.

But the rumor did not disappear.

Because truth was quiet.

Fear was loud.

---

That evening, the palace servants received another piece of news.

The whispers became louder.

People were saying that the strange incidents were increasing.

Some claimed they had seen shadows.

Some claimed they had heard voices.

Some claimed that ghosts were gathering inside the palace.

And someone said—

”The Empress is at the center of it.”

That sentence spread faster than all the others.

Soon, people weren’t saying perhaps.

They were saying she did it.

That was the moment suspicion became accusation.

---

In the servants’ quarters, an old attendant slammed his cup down.

”This has gone too far.”

Everyone looked at him.

”You have no proof.”

A younger servant replied,

”But the ministers are discussing punishment.”

”Ministers discussing something doesn’t make it true.”

”But what if they are right?”

The old attendant stared at him.

”Then bring evidence.”

The young servant fell silent.

The old attendant continued.

”Don’t condemn someone because you’re frightened.”

”Today it’s the Empress.”

”Tomorrow it could be you.”

---

Yet outside the servants’ quarters—

The rumor continued.

Some servants whispered that the Empress deserved death.

Others whispered that she should be imprisoned.

Some believed she should be removed from the palace.

And a smaller group quietly defended her.

But even those defenders spoke softly.

They were afraid.

Not of the Empress.

Of the rumor.

Of the people spreading it.

Of what might happen if they stood against the crowd.

---

Late that night, a maid returned to her room.

She shut the door.

Sat on her bed.

And stared into the darkness.

She had spent the entire day hearing people accuse the Empress.

Yet something bothered her.

She remembered the first time she had seen Her Majesty.

The Empress had been walking through the courtyard.

A servant had dropped an entire tray of food.

Instead of becoming angry—

She had crouched down.

Helped gather the dishes.

And told the frightened servant,

”Don’t worry. Accidents happen.”

The maid remembered that clearly.

She remembered the smile.

The gentle voice.

The lack of arrogance.

She remembered thinking:

She is nothing like the rumors about noble people.

Now—

The same woman was being called a monster.

The maid pulled her blanket around herself.

”What happened?”

She whispered into the darkness.

”How did we go from fearing ghosts...”

”...to hating a person?”

No one answered.

---

Elsewhere, another servant was having the same thoughts.

A stable boy sat alone near the horses.

He had heard everything.

He had heard that the Empress was dangerous.

He had heard that she controlled spirits.

He had heard that strange events were her fault.

But he had also seen her once.

She had stopped beside the stable.

Asked whether the horses were being fed properly.

And when he answered that one old horse was struggling—

She had ordered that it receive better food.

He had never forgotten it.

He stared at the ground.

”Maybe people are wrong.”

Then he looked around nervously.

He immediately lowered his voice.

”Maybe...”

---

The palace became divided.

Not officially.

Not openly.

But quietly.

One side whispered:

”She is dangerous.”

Another whispered:

”She is innocent.”

And most people—

Were simply afraid to choose.

---

As midnight approached, the palace corridors became silent.

Doors closed.

Lanterns dimmed.

Servants slept uneasily.

But even in their dreams—

The rumors followed them.

Some dreamed of ghosts.

Some dreamed of dark corridors.

Some dreamed of the Empress standing beneath the moonlight.

And in the morning—

They woke frightened.

Another rumor was born.

”I dreamed about Her Majesty.”

”She was surrounded by ghosts.”

”She must be responsible.”

Nobody stopped to ask the simplest question.

It was a dream.

Nothing more.

Yet fear had already made its decision.

---

Meanwhile, somewhere inside the palace, a servant stood before a window.

He looked toward the Empress’s distant courtyard.

He remembered everything people had said.

Then he whispered,

”If she really were behind all this...”

He paused.

”...why would she save people?”

He had no answer.

And that uncertainty frightened him more than the rumors.

Because perhaps—

The palace had been looking in the wrong direction.

Perhaps the person everyone feared was not the person they should fear.

Perhaps the strange incidents had nothing to do with her.

Perhaps someone else was quietly feeding the rumors.

Someone who wanted everyone looking at the Empress.

Someone who wanted servants frightened.

Someone who wanted the truth buried beneath a thousand whispers.

But the servants didn’t know that.

Not yet.

All they knew was that the palace felt different.

The corridors felt colder.

The shadows seemed longer.

And every unexplained sound made another rumor grow.

---

The next morning, a servant opened the palace doors and heard two women whispering nearby.

”Do you believe she is guilty?”

The other woman looked toward the Empress’s residence.

”I don’t know.”

”Then why are you afraid of her?”

The woman was silent.

Finally, she answered:

”Because everyone else is.”

The first woman looked at her sadly.

”That is not a reason.”

”No.”

The woman lowered her eyes.

”But sometimes...”

She swallowed.

”...fear doesn’t need a reason.”

And once again—

The whisper moved through the palace.

Quietly.

From one person to another.

Until the entire palace seemed to be holding its breath.

The Empress had become the center of suspicion.

The servants had begun to doubt what they saw with their own eyes.

And somewhere beyond their understanding—

The true darkness remained hidden.

Waiting.

Watching.

Letting the palace condemn the wrong person.

And for now—

The rumor was winning.
