Chapter 87: Chapter 88 : OVA: Hanabi and Hikari

”Not bad at all.”

Outsourcing really did save time and effort.

After receiving the first rough cut, Hanabi found that Musashino Animation had been remarkably diligent. The overall quality was solid.

So she decided to hand them the rest of the follow-up work as well.

Hanabi performed a secondary edit on her end, adjusting the story to match her vision before sending back revision notes.

After three rounds of back-and-forth, the final OVA was complete.

The finished product featured plenty of new visual effects and music.

The Stage had a sizable asset library, but the Musashino team had gone the extra mile to ensure narrative cohesion, ultimately composing two original tracks tailored specifically to the story.

”Well, that wraps up the last of the work. Hats off to the animation studio.”

Wait.

Hang on.

”When the Stage said ’get the boss drunk’... did it literally mean getting the boss drunk?”

”And those poor contractors who put together second and third drafts only to have them scrapped in favor of the original concept... they were in there too, weren’t they?”

[For work requiring external collaboration, the Stage hires outside personnel.]

It actually answered.

”So the Stage’s inner workings really are nothing like the worlds of the sets or the audience, huh.”

But regardless, the OVA was finished.

The main title was simply ”Hanabi”—her own name.

The subtitle: ”Hanabi and Hikari.”

”Alright then. Time to put it out there.”

Once completed, the OVA would have both physical and digital distribution channels. For the initial launch, though, it was available for free on the streaming site for a limited time.

[First!]

[Marking my spot before this goes viral!]

[Already viral, no need to mark anything. Thanks]

[What am I looking at—a side story?!]

[An OVA!]

[Holy crap, a Hanabi OVA!]

[Oh my god, my waifu got an OVA!]

Ninja’s Path had already accumulated enough content to rival a two-cour anime.

The opening shot showed Hanabi researching inside the village.

It was early summer—clearly set after the events of the Wave Country arc.

Chakra flowed continuously from Hanabi’s hands as they made contact with the scrolls.

This was Hanabi’s method of ”reading”—processing information through chakra feedback.

Unlike the main series, the entire OVA carried subtle differences in art direction, filters, and color palette thanks to Musashino’s involvement.

Viewers could tell it was unmistakably a Ninja’s Path story, yet the aesthetic felt distinct from the original.

[Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Gorgeous!]

[Lewd! Lewd! Lewd!]

[So that’s how Hanabi reads!]

[Coach, I wanna learn Hanabi’s reading technique too! Then I can read with my eyes closed!]

[The ultimate method for cheating on exams]

[Damn, I didn’t even think of that—you, sir, are a genius]

[Hold on. Hold on. Didn’t Hanabi touch the Scroll of Seals before...?]

The audience’s imaginations ran wild, and their eye for detail was razor-sharp. Someone had already connected the dots—Hanabi had once had her hands all over the Scroll of Seals.

Nobody had thought much of it at the time, but the conspiracy theorists pounced. She couldn’t have actually read the whole thing, could she?

Well, this time the conspiracy theorists won. Because Hanabi really had.

”The Uchiha, huh...”

During the research montage, the scene briefly cut to a flashback—a dark, abandoned bookshelf. Hanabi pulled a scroll from one of its shelves.

A family portrait showing three people hung nearby, making it easy enough for viewers to connect the location to Kushina Yuki.

[So waifu’s been doing damage control this whole time]

[Team Seven just charges in headfirst, meanwhile my waifu’s out here thinking ten steps ahead]

[Hanabi: ”Without me, this family falls apart” lmao]

A single scene established the when, where, and who.

Hyūga Neji and Hinata made their entrances next.

In a conversation between Hanabi and Neji, they touched on the Chūnin Exams and training to grow stronger.

After that came a small outing—the Hyūga ”family of three” heading out on a minor mission.

[How come you’re not a Blue-Eyes White Dragon?]

[That’s gotta be a reference, right? That HAS to be a reference!]

[The OVA feels way more relaxed than the main series—looks like they’re going for a chill vibe]

[Man, ever since I found out about the red ropes wrapped all over Hanabi’s body, I can’t stop staring at the cord around her neck every time she’s on screen]

[Pro tip: just enter Sage Mode first, and you’ll be able to focus on the plot just fine]

[??? Hello, Military Police? Please drag the person above out of here!]

Since this wasn’t a livestream, the danmaku was denser than usual—packed with performative shitposting. The viewers were natural-born comedians.

And the banter between comments only made the atmosphere more electric.

[A family of three—I ship it]

[The big bro-in-law’s a guy though, right?]

[Even better!]

[By the time my reading speed caught up to what that comment actually said, I’d already finished reading it]

Sadly, the internet was full of people who talked big and never acted on any of it.

[Sisterly cuddles are the best]

[More of this. I need more]

[Yes! THIS is what I want!]

After accepting the mission, the trio headed to the destination for their assignment.

This was where Neji and Hanabi’s training montage took place.

But at that point, the camera cut back to Hanabi.

This segment was what Hanabi had originally filmed.

The reason she’d returned looking pale on the first night wasn’t exhaustion alone—she’d also needed to edit that opening sequence into the cut.

From the audience’s perspective, then, Hanabi’s first encounter with the Jingliu Puppet took place during Neji and Hinata’s sparring session. The restructured timeline tightened the pacing considerably.

Opening act plus fight scene. Standard formula, tried and true.

The earlier investigation segments had been trimmed here to avoid conflicting with the preceding flashback. One scene, two purposes. No complaints.

Once the fighting began, the danmaku stayed relatively normal.

Even when Hanabi changed into the Shiranui ninja outfit, nobody batted an eye.

But the moment she switched into the Scarlet Outfit, dual swords drawn, the danmaku detonated.

[Holy crap, dual blades!]

[DUAL WIELD!]

[There’s a THIRD form?!]

[666]

[She’s STILL been holding back! My waifu is STILL hiding things!]

[So my waifu was a dual-wielder all along?!]

[Off-shoulder kimono... she’s technically more covered up than in the ninja outfit, but somehow it hits even harder]

[THE. BUDGET. IS. INSANE.]

The battle between Hanabi and Jingliu was a collision of ice and fire.

A proper fight scene with almost no dialogue. Under clean, precise editing, the entire sequence was tight and fluid.

Musashino had also layered in additional VFX and filters, making the contrast between ice and fire even more striking.

That was the advantage of an OVA—the freedom to fine-tune the visuals.

Hanabi’s first battle against the Jingliu Puppet had the audience completely electrified...
