Chapter 20: Chapter 20: The Coming of Spring

On the tenth day Lynn arrived in this world.

The sky had just begun to lighten.

After breakfast, Lynn and Kuisi walked out of the wooden house.

Kuisti carried two rabbit cages to the weedy wasteland for placement.

Holding three fishing cages in his hand, Lynn slowed his pace, walking while waiting for Kuisi to catch up.

Soon, Kuisi ran up to him.

Slightly breathless, she said, ”Master Lynn, sorry to keep you waiting.”

Kuisi took the fishing cages from Lynn’s hand.

Upon reaching the river, Lynn grabbed the fishing cage intending to pull it out, finding it unusually light in hand.

The wickers emerged from the water, and the fishing cage had disappeared.

Kuisi looked a bit surprised, ”Where did the fishing cage go?”

Lynn explained, ”It was probably swept away by an undercurrent, but don’t worry, I’ve just made three more.”

Kuisi nodded.

Upon reaching the second fishing cage, three livelier bass were jumping inside just above the water surface.

Kuisi hurried to lend a hand and lifted them out.

Pouring the bass out of the fishing cage, she picked up a hard stone from the ground, striking each bass on the head.

Skillfully using the flint knife to gut the bass, cleaning them, she followed Lynn’s actions to thread them with wicker.

The weight of three bass was at least tens of pounds.

Kuisi said, ”Master Lynn, I’ll go back and store the fish first, I’ll be back shortly to weed.”

After hearing Lynn respond, she quickly rushed off.

Having learned from this experience, Lynn specially reinforced the fishing cage with two wickers, one at the front and one at the rear.

Four fishing cages were placed in the river at regular distances.

Lynn took the flint shovel to the open area, continuing to cultivate.

...

The weeds outside the cabin were cleared significantly, creating a more comfortable visual effect.

As the night wind came, the air was filled with the scent of earth and the green aroma of weeds.

In front of the fire pit.

After dinner, Lynn continued weaving with a bundle of twigs.

The area of cultivated land had reached over five hundred square meters.

With this efficiency, finishing the cultivation of one thousand square meters would only take a few more days.

If Kuisi could stop weeding, the cultivation could be completed even faster.

Lynn needed to prepare some tools to collect the forest’s decayed soil to enhance soil fertility.

Tools to load decayed soil, load the soil into the pannier using the flat basket, and the carrying pole for shoulder carrying.

With the wickers and weaving knowledge in his mind, it wasn’t difficult for Lynn.

...

The knowledge of weaving the basket blended in Lynn’s mind.

The key to weaving the basket lies in the bottom frame, as only a sturdy and solid bottom can bear more weight.

Lynn picked out thicker twigs as the basket frame, bending them into a circle to establish the basket frame, tying it up firmly with grass ropes.

Then selecting some thinner twigs to start cross weaving from the frame to form a dense plane...

Once the bottom weaving was completed, Lynn continued weaving the basket’s sides, bending the twigs upwards during weaving to form an outward arc.

Under Lynn’s constantly changing hands, the basket’s sides grew layer by layer, finally completing the weaving.

Lynn chose two thicker twigs, bent them to suitable shapes, fixed them with grass ropes as the basket handles...

Thus, a sturdy and exquisite basket appeared before Lynn.

Lynn reached out to lift it, finding the basket stable without the slightest deformation.

Just about to make the second basket, Kuisi’s voice rang, ”Master Lynn, your hands are incredibly skilled!”

Lynn turned to look, seeing Kuisi and Red staring at him with wide eyes full of amazement.

Kuisi felt that the handiwork of Master Lynn was completely no less skilled than the weavers from the manor she and Red were previously from.

Red agreed by nodding his head.

Lynn said, ”It’s nothing, with a little practice you can weave too.”

Kuisi showed no unusual expression.

But Red felt Lynn was hinting at him.

Lynn looked at Red, ”You don’t need to weave, instead make some flint arrows, you’re better at that.”

Red was relieved, ”Alright, Master Lynn.”

With the presence of the horn bow, as long as there are enough arrows, hunting and self-protection can be ensured.

Lynn continued weaving the basket.

As knowledge kept increasing, Lynn’s understanding of weaving became deeper, and his weaving speed accelerated.

The first basket took Lynn more than two hours, while the second took only one hour.

Placing a pair of baskets beside, Lynn continued weaving the flat basket.

Similarly, the flat basket started from the bottom, cutting twigs to appropriate lengths, hammering one end flat with a stone for easier weaving.

Lynn then laid several twigs on the ground as the bottom frame of the flat basket, weaving through the frame orderly and densely...

Bending the twigs upwards, weaving around the bottom edge to gradually form a higher edge...

With Lynn cutting off the extra twigs, a flat basket weaving completed.

Under the curious gaze of Kuisi and Red, Lynn hung the flat basket above the fire pit.

The flat basket needs to dry to ensure it is strong and durable.

After finishing the flat basket, Lynn wanted to weave a few more willow baskets but noticed it was already late at night.

Seeing Kuisi and Red still learning to weave, Lynn spoke, ”Rest up, we’ll continue working tomorrow.”

Kuisi and Red responded, gradually falling asleep on the grass pile.

Lynn, lying on the pile of weeds, looked through the cross window of the cabin towards the pitch-black sky outside.

His mind was pondering how to proceed with further development.

With rabbit cages, fishing cages, and Red whose injury is recovering for hunting, there are three food sources, momentarily there’s no worry of hunger.

But it’s far from enough.

There is still much Lynn has to do.

Firstly, grain food!

Lynn hadn’t consumed grain food in eleven days.

A long-term lack of carbohydrates, dietary fiber, and other nutrients would inevitably cause physical issues.

Next is spring plowing.

It’s already mid-March, entering spring plowing time.

Only over five hundred square meters of arable land were cultivated outside.

Less than an acre.

It’s really too little.

The wheat seed technology in this world yields only over a hundred pounds per acre, if getting a yield of one hundred and fifty pounds per acre.

Then it’s like heaven’s grace.

One should know, an acre of land planted with wheat seeds already consumes twenty pounds!

Even if Lynn uses knowledge from his mind to improve planting methods and increase yields.

It’s impossible for an acre to produce thousands of pounds of wheat.

More manpower is needed, expanding planting areas.

Next, farm tools.

Flint tools, whether in sturdiness or sharpness, are nowhere near iron tools.

Lynn needs iron tools to expedite farming efficiency.

Then, household utensils.

Lacking basic cooking tools, kitchen knife, cutting board, and dining utensils.

Lynn was still eating with branch chopsticks and wooden bowls.

And then, hanging smoked fish on the wooden house.

Daily, over twenty pounds of river fish are caught in the fishing cage.

Too much!

Of course, it’s a good thing.

At least it guarantees they won’t go hungry.

But the bad news is, now the Karedi Empire is in spring!

If temperatures remained low, preservation for one or two weeks would be possible.

But with consecutive days of temperatures over ten degrees...

Not conducive to storage!

Considering all the issues comprehensively, Lynn quickly found a solution.

Go to other villages, sell smoked fish!

With selling smoked fish, necessary iron tools can be purchased, along with some grain seeds.

If there’s extra money, some ceramic cooking and dining utensils can be bought.

Though, there’s not much smoked fish cured as of now, so a little delaying is possible.

Lastly, it’s the wolves in the forest.

There’s a need to find a way to deal with the wolf pack.
