The Conquerors Path

Chapter 859: Chapter 857-The Heart.

Time passed. The sun rose in the sky, and the city of Kharaldur, which seemingly never slept, began a new day. All the dwarves, with their own duties, set out to complete their tasks, the day was just like any other-except for some small changes occurring here and there.

”Good morning,”

I spoke with a smile as I watched Zora fall into a daze, a beautiful pink blush on her cheeks as she gazed at me. The reason for her reaction was simple: she had come down fresh from her sleep, looking as good as new, only to find me in the kitchen, wearing a cute apron as I took over the cooking.

Unlike other times when I looked casual, this time, I stood neat and tidy. My hair, which I freely styled, was now tied up in a small ponytail. My apron had the picture of a cute teddy bear on it, and my hands were covered with matching cute gloves. My presence filled the room with warmth, resembling a homemade husband-a sight that caused Zoraʼs gaze to freeze as she took it in.

To any other woman, this would have made their heart beat faster. For Zora, it escalated her emotions even higher, her gaze seemingly frozen at the sight of me, which made me chuckle. I waved my hands from the kitchen and called out to Zora.

”Hello?...Ground to Zora...Ground to Zora!... Did you fall asleep or what?”

It was only at my voiced shout that Zora broke out of her thought process, the blush on her face still lingering. She tried to hide her face by pulling her hat down a bit.

”I-I am fine, just a bit sleepy, I guess,”

She said. I nodded at her words and focused back on the task at hand, my voice filling the kitchen.

”Take a seat; breakfast will be done soon.”

Zora, seemingly still hiding her face by lowering her witch hat, only nodded her head lightly as she went to take a seat at the very comfortable kitchen table-not too lavish and not too grand. For Zora, who had grown up in a normal family, this seemed just right-a perfect family environment that stimulated her thoughts and made her yearn for more.

”We could have gone out to eat, you know,”

Zora said after some time. The sound of pancakes being baked was the only noise before I replied.

”I know, but itʼs not every day I get to cook good food. Take it as a treat. You do remember how good my food tastes, right?”

The ringing of my words made Zora shut up, a small gulping sound escaping her as memories of the food I had made resurfaced. I chuckled softly as I began placing the final preparations on the table. It wasnʼt anything grand-just some pancakes, good toast, well-cooked meat for protein, and a drink with a touch of honey everywhere.

It was a standard meal that all commoners could try, but I made sure to increase its taste. After setting everything perfectly, I quickly removed my apron, set the gloves aside, and took a seat in front of Zora, who asked.

”I didnʼt know there was cooking stuff in here.”

I smiled at her words and replied.

”I set it up beforehand. I thought we could have some homemade food. I know youʼve been missing it a bit.”

My words made Zoraʼs eyes widen, after which a gentle, happy smile appeared on her face. She once again pulled down her hat with her hand as she muttered under her breath slowly. ”Not fair...”

”Excuse me?”

I asked, seemingly not hearing her words. Lightly raising her hat, Zora spoke.

”I said, thanks.”

”Youʼre welcome,”

I replied with a small nod as we soon focused on the food. The utensils clinked as Zora took her first bite of the pancake. Her eyes widened before she began wolfing down the food. Soon, the two of us fell into a comfortable silence, working through our meal.

A warm atmosphere enveloped us as we ate. Sometime later, Zora regained control, and small talk began. Food was shared, smiles were exchanged, and the warm situation brought a wide smile to Zoraʼs face. Her expression lit up with pure joy and emotions that she would soon become addicted to.

ʼLooks like itʼs all going well,ʼ

I mused as I ate the food and enjoyed the situation-a small moment of relaxation after all the things that kept happening around us.

.....

”This place feels heavy,”

Zora muttered as we walked through the foundry, the main area where production took place. This was where the high-status dwarves moved around. The truly blessed ones got a chance to work in the foundry section, owning huge shops that produced technology. Several big names worked here-powerful dwarves whose fame had spread across the world. Masters of their crafts, they were renowned individuals for whom people would fight just to get the chance to have them create a weapon. Here, imagination and genius thrived, and oneʼs status was shown by how well one could craft.

A heavy atmosphere filled the place as we walked through it in disguise. Loud sounds filtered through the streets, where heavy traffic was felt at every turn. Wherever I looked, it was all tech and metal. Metal upon metal was all I saw walking through the streets, lined with several shops. The whole place buzzed with life.

The first time I stumbled into Kharaldurʼs Foundry sector, it knocked the breath right out of me. Even now, guiding Zora through its chaos, I canʼt help but feel that same wild energy. The air here stings your lungs with heat and molten metal, worlds away from the cool dignity of the Aurum Crown weʼd just left.

I caught Zoraʼs expression softening as she drank it all in. ”It feels...” she whispered, her hand hovering near her lips, ”alive somehow. But itʼs different from uptown. Heavier.”

A group of dwarves rolled past, wrestling with a massive cogwheel that sparked and pulsed with more than just mechanical purpose. I nodded at the sight, memories of my first visit

flooding back.

”This,” I said, sweeping my arm toward the thundering forges and bustling streets, ”is the Foundry. Think of it as Kharaldurʼs heartbeat. The Aurum Crown might dream up the ideas, but here? This is where they become real.”

Zora froze mid-step, her eyes climbing the towering smokestacks that pierced the sky. Steam and smoke billowed from their peaks in steady rhythms, like the breath of some great beast. Below, the streets teemed with life - craftsmen hauling precious metals, engineers clutching intricate blueprints, steam-powered automatons weaving between them all with precise

grace.

”Gods above, the noise,” she murmured, nearly lost in the symphony of industry.

”Loud,” I agreed with a half-smile, ”but thereʼs purpose in every sound. The Foundryʼs not just a workplace - itʼs home. Status here isnʼt about birth or gold - itʼs about what you can create with your own hands.”

”What do you mean?” she asked, tilting her head curiously.

I pointed to a gleaming storefront where Brannorʼs Blades shone in polished steel letters. ”See that shop? Brannorʼs one of the cityʼs finest smiths. His weapons arenʼt just steel - theyʼre art, woven through with enchantments that make them worth a kingʼs ransom.” Zora leaned closer to the window, where a sword hung suspended in empty air, dancing with

unseen magic.

”Thatʼs what makes the Foundry special,” I continued. ”Your work speaks for itself. Master enough skill, and you can climb right to the top. Fall short...” I gestured toward the shadowed

side streets where lesser workshops huddled.

Her brow furrowed. ”The pressure must be crushing.”

”It is,” I admitted, leading her down a quieter alley. ”But thatʼs what makes it extraordinary. The Foundry tests everyone who enters - burns away weakness, strengthens what remains.” We wandered past the Forgeheart, its beautiful glow casting long shadows across the cobblestones. The massive furnace powered everything from the smallest workshop to the grandest factory, its energy humming through the very stones beneath our feet.

Inventorsʼ Row stretched before us, a maze of workshops where innovation sparked like lightning. Strange machines whirred behind clouded windows, and the occasional bang sent apprentices scrambling for cover.

”Look there,” I said, pointing to a goggled dwarf hunched over some delicate contraption. ”That could be tomorrowʼs revolutionary invention taking shape. This is where the

boundaries get pushed.”

Zoraʼs eyes sparkled. ”And the social structure? You mentioned it was different.”

”Everything here revolves around craft,” I explained as we turned toward the Market Forge. ”Master artisans command more respect than nobles. Even the lowest workers take pride in their part of the whole.”

The square buzzed with activity - merchants haggling over enchanted crystals, craftsmen inspecting raw materials with jewellerʼs eyes. Every deal struck here could reshape the cityʼs

future.

”Itʼs all so much,” Zora breathed, though admiration coloured her voice.

I chuckled softly. ”Thatʼs the Foundry for you. Itʼs not just a place of making - itʼs where dreams take shape and legends are born. Chaotic, maybe, but thereʼs poetry in the madness.”

Catching her thoughtful sidelong glance, I wondered if she was starting to see what made this place magical - or if she was simply overwhelmed by its raw power. Either way, weʼd barely scratched the surface of what the Foundry had to show us.

This was just the beginning.
