Chapter 782: Chapter 859: Monster in the Dead City

Dark clouds churned in the sky, lightning bolts cleaving the void like the grim reaper’s blades, pressing down with such a heavy killing aura that everyone struggled to breathe.

”My God, this is too terrifying, let’s go!”

Two cultivators at the Sixth Layer of Tao cried out in alarm and, steering their flying swords, shot into the sky, trying to flee the Dead City.

”Boom...”

But just as they ascended no more than ten meters, the rolling dark clouds had become like a barrier, blanketing the entire Dead City and leaving them no escape. Then, with a thunderous explosion, a bolt of lightning struck one of them into dust and bones, killing him instantly.

The other cultivator’s face paled drastically, and he no longer dared to linger in the sky, hastily descending back to the ground, his face ghostly white with fright.

The earth kept trembling, dust rolling up, and the walls of the Dead City continued to rise.

As the earth and stone broke apart, antiques started to surface continually, and most of them were weapons. Suddenly, a dreadful scream was heard as an almost completely rusted ancient sword burst from the ground, piercing the thigh of a Second Level Taoist martial artist.

Everyone was extremely vigilant; this suddenly emerged Dead City was too terrifying, unlike anything they had ever witnessed before.

As the Dead City continued to grow, with incessant ground vibrations, weapons continually burst from underground, injuring and even killing the cultivators present.

About two minutes later, all was quiet.

The ground was no longer shaking, and people could finally stand firm, but of the cultivators who entered before, a third were now dead, with corpses scattered everywhere and blood flowing on the ground, a scene of utter desolation.

These people had all come in search of treasures, never anticipating they wouldn’t see the treasure but instead lose their lives in the Dead City.

With no more underground weapons assaulting them, people slightly relaxed their guard and began searching for a way out of the Dead City.

But no matter what they tried, they could not leave the Dead City.

Martial Artists tried climbing out from the city walls, but halfway up they were stopped by the dark clouds and ultimately killed by lightning. The cultivators were the same; if they rose ten meters above the ground, they would be blocked by the clouds and struck down by lightning if they paused even briefly.

Just as everyone was becoming exceedingly anxious, suddenly a set of heavy footsteps approached, as if a large army was marching in their direction.

Chen Nan’s eyebrows knitted tightly as he gripped the Demon Sword, readying himself for battle.

Others did the same, staring intently in the direction of the footsteps and readying themselves to strike at any moment.

”Tap... Tap...”

The rhythm of the footsteps was as if a well-trained army was marching in step.

Every footfall seemed like a muffled hammer hitting the chests of the onlookers, as if the steps of death were drawing closer, lending the atmosphere a deeply oppressive aura.

”If I could choose over, I would never come to this cursed place!”

Someone said in terror.

But it was too late for regrets, and heaven wouldn’t give them a second chance to choose.

As the footsteps drew nearer, an army clad in heavy armor appeared before everyone’s eyes.

This was an ancient army.

Each soldier wore rust-stained iron armor, wielded a long spear, and exuded a thick aura of death, as if they were devoid of life, every movement rigid, like a mechanical troop.

”Motherfucker, this is big trouble, these are the ghost soldiers guarding the Dead City!” the Black Feathered Chicken suddenly said.

Chen Nan furrowed his brows, ”What do you mean?”

”I’m not too clear myself, I only know that there’s a kind of special guardian between Heaven and Earth. In life, they were strong in cultivation, and after death, their bodies can endure for countless years without decay, driven only by an unyielding will, controlling their bodies to guard a person or an item.”

”How do we break it?” Chen Nan asked.

”I have no idea!” the Black Feathered Chicken turned to look behind, and said, ”We’d better run, these ghost soldiers will find us and start killing very soon.”

Indeed, as soon as it had spoken, the unit of ghost soldiers quickened their pace and charged toward them, brandishing their rusted long spears.

”Clang!”

A cultivator, disbelieving in superstitions, propelled his flying sword to attack, only to have one of the ghost soldiers sweep his long spear, instantly breaking the eighth-grade spiritual artifact into two pieces.

Seeing an eighth-grade spiritual artifact shattered with a single strike, everyone’s faces turned pale with shock.

The ghost soldiers’ army was unending; there was no telling how many were still behind. They pressed forward rapidly, forcing everyone to keep retreating.

”We’ve got to move quickly.”

Chen Nan and Zhao Han exchanged glances and hurriedly ran in the opposite direction, with the others quickly following behind them.

But after running for less than a hundred meters, the sound of footsteps came from ahead, and soon a unit of ghost soldiers appeared within everyone’s line of sight.

With wolves ahead and tigers behind, they were caught in a dilemma with no clear escape.

”There are two alleys over there; go through them quickly.”

”There’s also an alley this way.”

In their panic, people scattered, each seeking refuge in different alleyways to avoid the ghost soldiers.

The group of more than thirty people quickly dispersed.

Dodging to the left and right, after running through several narrow alleys, only three people remained with Chen Nan: himself, Zhao Han, and Guo Qiye—of course, including the Black Feathered Chicken.

Chen Nan surveyed the surroundings; it was like an ancient city, with old architectural houses on both sides of the alleys. Only now, the sky was enveloped by dark clouds, and the whole Dead City was shrouded in darkness, giving off an ominous feeling from the houses.

”Ah...”

Suddenly, a shrill scream of despair, likely someone’s last before death, pierced through the silence.

”Let’s go have a look.”

The three men and the chicken cautiously headed toward the source of the scream.

However, on the ground, they found only a pool of fresh blood, scattered steps, and a heap of disarticulated bones. This cultivator seemed to have been eaten alive by something.

Zhao Han said, ”Could it have been those ghost soldiers that ate him?”

Chen Nan bent down and found that among the bloodstains were strands of black hair, each one extremely thick, akin to spikes.

”This is definitely not human hair!” Chen Nan declared.

Guo Qiye also crouched down, saying, ”The ghost soldiers don’t have this kind of hair on them.”

”Could it be that, besides those ghost soldiers, there’s also a man-eating monster in here? If that’s the case, everyone be careful; that creature must not be far away.” Zhao Han looked around warily, the tenth-grade spiritual artifact pagoda hovering above his head, ready to act at any moment.

Swish...

Suddenly, the sound of wind arose, and a dark shadow flashed across the rooftop.

Everyone was on guard, but after a careful look around, all was quiet once more.

”We shouldn’t stay here long; let’s move.”

The group retreated cautiously, but just then, another scream echoed in the distance; another person had been killed. When Chen Nan and his group reached the location, they found two bodies on the ground, riddled with puncture wounds, murdered by the ghost soldiers.

Swish...

Suddenly, a fierce wind blew, and the dark shadow appeared again.
