Reborn in The Most Serene Republic of Venice – Rise of a Doge

The last draft of the season came due at a bench worn smooth by three generations of Rialto elbows, and it paid out in silver. Every grosso crossed the wood twice, once for the changer’s pride and once for Caterina’s pen.

Her nib struck through the final line on the leaf. The carters had gone through the warehouse door, the Commune’s scale had taken its last sack, and a notary had put his seal across the last sheet.

The Constantinople houses were paid first, their shares sailing east in hired ships before winter closed the sea. Rome’s balsam draft came due, and Father Ambrogio took his tithe across the step of San Pietro di Castello with a hand that blessed the purse as it went down.

The bench was empty when the box arrived.

Vito learned the title through the back of his neck.

When a house put its name across a table from him, whether by seal, by sign, or by a man speaking in its voice, his nape told him whether the house stood on its own floor.

A house standing on its silver gave him nothing at all, while a house on a borrowed floor, built on other debts and other promises, put a cold thumb against his spine.

The cold named no sum, culprit, nor reason.

Inside the council it went dumb, because that hall held a republic, and that belongs to no house.

The cold pointed and left the proving to Caterina’s notebook, and the next problem was already coming through the door in good cloth.

The Rialto’s story of doubled silver had been walking the benches for weeks, and the houses it drew came to the table at L’Angelo one at a time, bringing men Fantin had underlined twice on a list not a soul had asked him to write.

The Constantinople merchants, who had stood at the bench on payment day, wrote part of their silver straight into a fresh leaf before their hulls cast off. The colleganza took its form like before, half the profit to the houses, with their silver returned whole before a grosso reached the voyagers.

It was outside capital against a merchant labor, with no fraterna in it and no cousin’s hand on the strongbox.

The men of Asti came last, in cloth so good it seemed to apologize for the room. They laid across the table an offer sweeter than any house had named, more silver than two together, at a rate no changer on the bridge could have quoted with a straight face.

The back of Vito’s neck went cold.

It stayed cold while Caterina read the leaf with one finger under the lines, like a priest reading the bad parts of a will. Three lines above the seal she found it.

Asti could call its silver home whenever a debt it held against another backer came due, it needed to buy only one such debt.

Caterina slid the leaf back across the table with two fingers, like a rotten fish she has smelled. The men of Asti left cool, and by the time they reached the stairs the back of Vito’s neck had warmed.

Weeks after, Vito stood in a yard of church ground by the Arsenal’s wall with a bill of sale in one hand and a second paper in the other. The treasury had taken the yard that month, a strip of mud, timber stacks, and one empty slip to San Pietro di Castello. It lay outside the Arsenal’s gate, beyond the reach of every red cap inside.

Father Ambrogio had blessed the slip for a fee. He blessed the adze, the first plank, a barrel of tar that had asked for nothing, and the boots of every man present.

He billed each blessing by the splash, so that grace in that yard cost so much a drop.

The purchase had taken a week of cousins.

Fantin’s cousins, who had cousins of their own, found a warden at the Arsenal whose palm closed on silver the way an oyster closes on a thumb. The warden entered Nestor in the books as a hand surplus to the Republic’s need, who named its price for him, a number on a leaf in a clerk’s neat ink.

Vito paid it.

A notary drew the second paper inside the hour, with the same name on it and no number at all.

For the length of one breath the yard held two leaves, one that had priced a man and one that had unpriced him.

Vito crossed the mud, put both leaves in the shipwright’s hand, and told him he was free, and that the route to Constantinople went east if he so wished.

Nestor looked east past the Arsenal’s wall, toward a city that was ash. Then he looked at the sheets pinned across the shed, the door hung on iron hinges at a galley’s stern, the benches leaning like drunks.

The hull stood on its ribs like an ox on a hook.

He walked to the slip, spat on the patch Ambrogio had sprinkled, and put his adze to the first timber.

The keel went down while the sea was still open.

Nestor cursed every plank of it by name in Greek, Venetian, and a dialect of that the oak understood. The oak went in straight.

He said thank you to no one.

No hull stood finished yet, and the fleet stayed as it was.

Through all of it the council sat every week, and every week Vito went up to it.

The guest bench had been cut by those who hated petitioners.

Vito, who had talked his way past customs men, archons, and one Doge, sat on it with his mouth shut among several hundred patricians in wool while the weather turned from July steam to October wet dog.

He learned the hall by ear and eye, who whispered to whom, which benches closed around Marco’s knot like a hand around a purse, and which glanced across at Fantin.

In the fifth week an old patrician from the side benches sent an usher across the floor with a cushion of red wool stuffed with goose down.

Vito nodded at the donor from forty paces, exactly as deeply as the cushion deserved.

The next week the opposite bench sent a second. Its owner wouldn’t be outdone across an aisle.

The week after came a third.

By San Michele the hall dealt in cushions the way the Rialto dealt in silver.

Fantin sat on two, Vito on four, and the knot of benches that took to bringing their own was called the Feathers, while Marco’s following sat on bare oak like penitents.

Zaccaria stood at the wall among the retainers with his arms folded over a belt that held nothing, his face bitter as if he chewed a nail.

The gray-haired patrician who believed him a Michiel found him at every sitting.

First came wine.

Then came an invitation to dine with the true Michiels. After that, the old man searched his own family for the cousin who might have strayed. The search spawned two aunts, a third cousin, and a chapel with room on its wall for one more name.

Zaccaria learned the hall’s doors the way a hunted fox learns a hill, and left by the far one.

Marco sat on the front bench in the pudding hat at every sitting, and across the width of the hall Vito sat in his cushions and looked at it.

The hat looked back.

Sundays belonged to Fantin’s households.

There were six of them, small Barozzi branches with long noses and short purses. Over six weeks Vito ate at every table while Fantin brought him from door to door like he was delivering a prize ham.

Each house wanted different privileges.

The first wanted first call on Cretan wax.

The second wanted a younger son on a stool at the Candia fondaco, copying invoices under a lion.

The third wanted only to hear the legend again, and heard it, and Vito told it a little bigger at every door.

By the second table the legend had a bear in it.

By the sixth the bear had a name, a rank in the Varangian Guard, and criticism about Latins.

Vito asked none of the six for a vote.

Old Donata Morosini, whose cellar had been stale since Lent, poured the Commandaria Marina Badoer had sold her. Then she told the story of Richard of England’s wedding as if she had stood at the altar.

By the second dinner she had stopped inviting guests to see her cellar and started inviting them to see Vito. Her grandson held a seat within distance of Marco’s hat, and from it he began to nod at the guest bench.

None of it asked for a vote, and all of it pointed toward one island.

Every house with silver in the second leaf had money standing at Candia’s fondaco door, on the Chania and Rethymno tolls, and across an island that held its peace.

A governor sent by a rival house could close that door in a season.

Caterina wrote those stakes in columns and called them voices, and the columns grew, while the months passed.
