Primordial Heir: Nine Stars

The game had shifted from speed to creativity.

Nero surged upward, his wings exploding into a burst of light, flames bending into a fiery phoenix that soared across the sky. Its wings spread wide, each beat shaking sparks into the night, illuminating the city below. Khione countered with her own creation—her wings crystallized further, feathers sharpening into translucent blades, and from her trail bloomed a dragon of ice, sleek and serpentine, curling alongside the phoenix. For a breathless span of time, fire and ice beasts raced each other across the heavens, their forms clashing in playful rivalry.

The people of Angel’s City, still awake in the nightlife, paused to gaze skyward. From balconies, plazas, and bridges, they watched in awe as two luminous figures painted the sky with spectacle—a dance of flame and frost, as if the very gods had descended to play. Some clapped, some gasped, others whispered of omens, but the two at the center of it all paid no attention. The city was their stage, and they were utterly absorbed in each other.

Khione suddenly veered upward, breaking through the steam-filled clouds with a burst of frost. Nero chased, his wings leaving a fiery spiral behind him. They emerged into the open night sky, where the stars seemed impossibly close, each one burning brighter against the velvet black.

”You’re keeping up better than I thought,” Khione said, her voice calm yet edged with the faintest thrill.

Nero smirked. ”Keeping up? I’m ahead.”

He darted past her with a sudden burst of speed, flame streaking. But Khione’s eyes gleamed—she had been waiting for this. Her wings folded slightly, and she let herself drop, plunging in freefall. The wind roared around her as she fell, twisting and turning, her white dress fluttering like a falling petal. At the last moment, she snapped her wings open, arresting her descent in a flurry of ice crystals, and shot upward with renewed momentum—cutting across Nero’s path.

He laughed. A deep, genuine laugh carried by the night air. Rare was the one who could match his daring so perfectly. He dove after her, flames bursting, the heat from his wings melting the frost in her trail into shimmering droplets that sparkled like diamonds.

They chased and twisted around each other endlessly—spirals, dives, loops, and sudden clashes of power. Sometimes fire overtook frost, sometimes frost bent flame aside. Neither relented, neither surrendered, and neither cared who ”won.” The thrill was in the chase, the unspoken bond forged in motion.

Finally, breathless though neither would admit it, they slowed. Hovering high above the city, their wings spread wide, they gazed at each other. The steam of their clashing elements drifted lazily between them, glowing faintly in the starlight. Below, Angel’s City sprawled in radiant splendor, unaware of how much lighter the Ice Queen’s heart felt in that moment—or how much Nero’s eyes burned not just with fire, but with quiet fascination.

For once, words weren’t needed. Their laughter, their rivalry, and the shared exhilaration spoke louder than anything.

The night belonged to them.

Once more the steam dispersed, leaving fire and frost drifting apart before colliding again, like celestial rivals destined to chase one another forever. Khione’s wings beat once, sharp and deliberate, propelling her forward in a blur of pale light. Nero followed immediately, heat surging around him as his flames flared brighter, painting the night with fiery streaks that refused to be overtaken.

But Khione wasn’t content to simply follow. With a tilt of her wrist, she spun midair, her icy trail curving into intricate spirals—like blossoms of frost blooming across the heavens. Nero narrowed his eyes, smirk tugging at his lips, and dove straight through them, shattering each spiral with the force of his fiery wings. Ice shards scattered, catching the moonlight like thousands of tiny stars before evaporating in his heat.

”You’re reckless,” Khione called, her voice carrying a playful sharpness.

”You love it,” Nero shot back, twisting upward. His flames erupted into a blazing arc, forming a ring of fire. With a single daring motion, he flipped backward through it, challenging her to match him.

Khione’s eyes gleamed. Without hesitation, she angled her wings and dove, her entire body sheathed in frost. She pierced the fiery ring head-on, her cold aura freezing it in an instant, turning blazing heat into brittle shards of glowing ice that fell around them like a meteor shower.

The collision of their powers filled the sky with light—embers falling alongside snowflakes, sparks mingling with frost. It was as though fireflies and frozen petals rained over Angel’s City. The citizens below cried out in awe, believing they were witnessing a celestial festival.

But high above, neither of them slowed.

Khione shot higher, faster, challenging him with pure speed. Nero followed, his flame wings leaving streaks of molten gold in his wake. They ascended so high that the city below became a glowing patchwork of light, the sea surrounding it reflecting like polished glass. The higher they went, the thinner the air, the sharper the stars.

Khione suddenly banked sideways, wings slicing through the night. She traced a perfect crescent arc across the sky, her frost bending the moonlight into a shimmering halo. Nero didn’t just follow—he surged through her path, flames erupting outward, turning her crescent into a blazing comet’s trail. The two trails—one silver-blue, the other molten-gold—intertwined until it looked as though a double star had been born in the heavens.

They looped, spiraled, dived, and rose again, their laughter mingling with the whistle of the wind. Sometimes their wings brushed, fire kissing ice, sending rippling waves of steam into the night. Other times, they narrowly avoided colliding, the thrill of danger quickening their pace, driving them to push harder, faster, higher.

Finally, Khione’s eyes sparkled with mischief. She flared her wings wide, scattering ice across the air, then tilted into a nosedive. Her speed was frightening, her frost tearing streaks through the sky like the tail of a falling star. Nero’s grin widened—she was baiting him. And he took it.

With a burst of flame, he dove after her, wings blazing brighter than ever, his heat chasing her frost down through the clouds. They pierced through vapor, leaving a spiraling tunnel of steam behind them. Down, down they plummeted, their wings roaring, until the city lights rushed closer. Just as it seemed they would crash, they both pulled upward at the last heartbeat, wings flaring wide, sending shockwaves across the rooftops.

The people below gasped, some shielding their eyes from the twin explosions of fire and frost that illuminated the night like a second sunrise.

Above, Nero and Khione hovered, breathless, their wings still crackling with lingering energy. Their gazes met—fire meeting ice—and for the briefest moment, the entire world seemed to vanish around them. Only the sky, only the night, only their endless race remained.

And neither was ready to end it yet.
