Beast Devourer: I Grow Stronger by Eating Monsters

The next morning, Deep Mire was too quiet.

Raven preferred noisy places.

Noise meant animals, insects, moving water, branches snapping. It meant something could hear the group approaching, but it also meant Raven could hear the world responding.

Silence was different.

Silence meant the animals had learned something they hadn’t.

Garran had arrived before dawn with six additional soldiers and a written authorization officially classifying the expedition as emergency reconnaissance. After reviewing the samples collected the previous day and confirming that Hollow Thread concentrations increased the farther they pushed into Deep Mire, the captain had decided waiting had become more dangerous than entering.

Raven agreed.

That seemed to worry Valeria more than the times they argued.

”You two agree again,” she muttered while checking the small vials of blood secured around her belt. ”I’m going to start suspecting one of you.”

Garran tightened his gloves.

”So am I.”

Raven looked between them.

”We can argue if it improves your emotional state.”

”No,” they answered at the same time.

Raven decided that settled the matter.

The group was larger this time: Raven, Valeria, Roland, Maelor, Garran, and six quarantine soldiers. Two carried sample containers. Another carried a communication crystal whose signal would probably fail as soon as the trees thickened and the ambient mana became too dense. Everyone wore sealed boots, gloves, and waxed cloth covering the neck and wrists.

Raven had also brought more food.

A lot more.

Valeria had watched him fill his pack before they left.

She hadn’t commented.

That concerned him almost as much as the silence.

His arm had fully recovered. The scar from the Hollow Thread extraction had disappeared overnight, but Raven had kept Manual Regulation active until he confirmed twice that no foreign organism remained inside.

The experience had given him a new rule.

Regenerating did not mean healing correctly.

He could now delay superficial closure, prioritize critical structures, and reduce the response in specific areas. It wasn’t absolute control, but it made Predatory Regeneration considerably more useful.

It also meant he had to think before letting his body do the work.

Raven preferred that.

Abilities requiring judgment were less dangerous than abilities pretending judgment was unnecessary.

”Here,” Maelor said.

They had reached the small island where they had found the infected Mana Reservoir Toad the previous day.

It was gone.

Raven immediately studied the marks in the mud.

”Did you move it?”

Maelor shook his head.

”We left it sedated and marked. I planned to come back with a cage.”

Garran crouched.

”Something dragged it.”

A deep groove crossed the mud.

Not toward the water.

Northeast.

Raven followed the trail with his eyes.

”It wasn’t dragged into the channel.”

Roland examined the ground.

”Something walked.”

”Something large.”

”Yes.”

Valeria pointed toward several impressions beside the groove.

”Is that a foot?”

Raven moved closer.

It resembled a footprint, but only partially. Three long toes, spread too far apart. Around them were smaller punctures, as though several thin structures had touched the ground at the same time.

Predation couldn’t analyze tracks.

Experience could.

”Uneven weight distribution,” Raven said. ”Either it has multiple limbs or it uses something else for support.”

Maelor stared at the trail.

”A host?”

”Maybe.”

Garran stood.

”We follow it.”

No one argued.

The toad’s trail led roughly in the same direction as the high-density reservoir signature FORGE had detected the day before.

Raven wasn’t calling that coincidence anymore.

Not certainty either.

But the pattern was taking shape.

They found the first living animals nearly an hour later.

Raven would have preferred them dead.

A Marsh Grazer stood in the middle of a flooded clearing. It resembled a short, heavy deer with partially webbed feet and two flat horns growing from its skull.

It didn’t flee when it saw them.

It didn’t react at all.

It was breathing.

That was all.

Raven raised one hand, stopping the group.

”Don’t get closer.”

Predation responded once he entered range.

[Species: Marsh Grazer]

[Level: 6]

[Status: ALIVE]

[Mana Reserves: 2%]

[Severe Biological Depletion Detected.]

[Foreign Organisms: 148]

[Host Integration: 81%.]

Raven stared at the animal.

”One hundred forty-eight.”

Maelor went pale.

”Hollow Threads?”

”Yes.”

The Grazer moved one leg.

Then another.

Not like an animal deciding to walk.

More like something testing the joints.

Valeria watched it carefully.

”It’s too heavily infested to still be conscious.”

Raven agreed.

Its eyes were open but focused on nothing.

”It probably isn’t.”

The Grazer took another step, then turned toward the water.

Garran frowned.

”Where is it going?”

Raven watched as the animal slowly entered the channel until the water reached its abdomen.

Then it leaned forward.

Valeria understood first.

”It’s drinking.”

Raven shook his head.

”No.”

A translucent filament emerged from its mouth.

Then another.

Five.

Ten.

The soldiers raised their weapons.

The filaments dropped into the water.

They weren’t entering the animal.

They were leaving it.

Maelor took a step back.

”It’s contaminating the channel.”

A cold pressure settled behind Raven’s eyes.

That changed a lot.

Infected humans weren’t the end of the cycle.

They were transportation.

The Grazer finished releasing nearly a dozen organisms, climbed slowly out of the water, and started walking again.

Not toward them.

Deeper into the swamp.

”Follow it,” Raven said.

Garran looked at him.

”Why?”

”It isn’t moving randomly.”

”How do you know?”

”Because a body with two percent mana shouldn’t be moving at all.”

Raven watched the animal disappear between the trees.

”Something wants it to go somewhere.”

Garran looked toward his soldiers.

”Keep your distance. Nobody touches the water. Nobody touches the host.”

They followed.

The Grazer moved slowly.

That was useful.

It was also unpleasant to watch.

Every few minutes, its muscles contracted irregularly. One leg eventually folded in the wrong direction and the animal collapsed.

For several seconds, it didn’t move.

Raven thought it had died.

Then the limb straightened through a series of spasms.

The Grazer stood again.

Valeria looked away for a moment.

”They’re keeping it functional.”

”Yes.”

”Even now.”

”As long as it can move, it’s useful.”

Valeria looked at him.

”Livestock.”

Raven nodded.

He didn’t need to explain anymore.

They found more after the Grazer.

A massive bird clung to a branch so tightly its talons had pierced the bark. Its chest had collapsed inward, and dozens of translucent lines moved beneath the feathers.
