The Abandoned Groom Married his Ex's Enemy!

Dinner happened after everyone else had left.

Not in the café.

Not formally.

Rosalie refused.

”I am not plating anything.”

Nobody argued.

They ate in the kitchen instead.

Whatever remained.

Bread.

Cheese.

Soup.

Leftover roast chicken.

Pastries that had broken badly enough to be unsellable but still tasted perfectly fine.

Alejandro sat at the worktable.

Giovanni occupied a stool beside him.

Alex leaned against the counter because every chair was taken.

Rosalie remained standing until Alejandro pulled another stool closer with his foot.

”Sit.”

”I still need to—”

”Sit.”

She did.

That alone made Alex smile.

His father had regained something too.

Not authority.

Energy.

The man who’d once sat around the ancestral home waiting for a wife who might never return had spent the entire day walking between tables, writing orders, checking supplies, and arguing about whether they needed another coffee grinder.

He looked tired.

But alive.

Rosalie looked the same.

”You did well,” Alex said.

She stared at him.

”We nearly ran out of everything.”

”Exactly.”

”That’s good?”

”It means people bought it.”

Giovanni nodded.

”Opening-day shortages are better than opening-day leftovers.”

Rosalie looked toward him.

”You’re coming next weekend.”

”No.”

”You said the same thing this morning.”

”I’m not staff.”

”Yet.”

Alex laughed.

Giovanni pointed toward him.

”You aren’t helping.”

”I don’t want to.”

The bakery-equipment list had apparently survived reality fairly well.

Giovanni asked what they’d learned.

Rosalie immediately answered.

”Second proofing cabinet.”

Alejandro added, ”Larger coffee machine.”

”Not larger,” Rosalie corrected. ”Faster.”

”Same effect.”

”No.”

Alex looked between them.

”Good. Marriage restored.”

Both parents stared.

He took another bite of bread.

”Sorry.”

Giovanni hid a smile.

They discussed the opening without turning dinner into a formal review.

More seating outside perhaps.

Better signage near the road.

A clearer pickup area for customers who only wanted baked goods.

No expansion of the menu yet.

Rosalie refused.

”Everyone keeps telling me to add pasta.”

”Don’t,” Giovanni said.

”Thank you.”

”See what sells for two months first.”

Alejandro nodded.

”Exactly.”

Alex looked toward Giovanni.

”You’ve become her favorite.”

”I earned it.”

”With bread.”

”Strong strategy.”

Rosalie laughed.

The room fell warm around the sound.

Eventually, the conversation moved elsewhere.

Alex asked about Japan.

Rosalie wanted photographs.

Giovanni took out his phone.

He showed them temples.

Wooden buildings.

Food.

Gardens.

The old repaired chest Alex had already seen.

Then Alejandro noticed something.

”That’s Alex’s photo.”

Giovanni froze.

The screen showed a photograph Alex had sent from school.

Not meant for the family.

Nothing compromising.

Just Alex sitting at his desk surrounded by papers.

Giovanni immediately swiped away.

Too late.

Rosalie looked interested.

”You save his pictures?”

Alex turned toward him.

Giovanni stared at his phone.

”Reference.”

”For what?” Alex asked.

”Academic suffering.”

”Very useful reference.”

Alejandro wisely concentrated on his soup.

Rosalie did not.

”That’s sweet.”

”Mother.”

”What?”

Alex looked toward Giovanni.

Giovanni looked back.

Neither said anything.

For once, Rosalie became uncomfortable first.

”More Japan.”

”Excellent idea,” Giovanni said.

He showed them another garden.

Later, while Alejandro and Rosalie spoke with Tomas about the following day’s reduced schedule, Alex and Giovanni stepped outside.

The air had cooled.

The farm was quiet again.

”How long are you staying?” Alex asked.

”Tonight?”

”Yes.”

”Driving back.”

Alex frowned.

”You’ve been working since morning.”

”So have you.”

”I wasn’t overseas yesterday.”

”Two days ago.”

”Still.”

Giovanni looked toward him.

”Are you offering me a room?”

”There are plenty.”

”Business rate?”

”Full price.”

”Terrible hospitality.”

”Friends-and-family discount.”

Giovanni smiled.

There it was.

Friends.

Family.

Something comfortably between categories, without needing clarification yet.

”I’ll stay.”

Alex nodded.

”Good.”

Then, after a moment:

”I missed this.”

Giovanni looked over.

”The farm?”

”Having you around.”

The words came out so naturally that Alex apparently didn’t realize what he’d said until afterward.

Giovanni did.

”You could’ve called.”

”I did call.”

”More.”

”I have school.”

”I have phones.”

”You were abroad.”

”Also phones.”

Alex smiled.

”So you missed me too.”

Giovanni should’ve denied it.

That would’ve been easier.

Instead:

”Yes.”

Alex’s smile changed.

Only slightly.

”Good.”

Again.

That word.

Giovanni had become dangerously fond of hearing it from him.

Inside, Alejandro found Rosalie alone near the café counter.

The staff had finished cleaning.

They were turning off the final lights.

She ran one hand along the polished surface.

”We did it.”

Alejandro stood beside her.

”You did.”

”We.”

He looked toward her.

”You let me invest and carry plates.”

”And complain.”

”Important contribution.”

Rosalie laughed.

Then became quiet.

”Thank you.”

”For?”

”Waiting.”

Alejandro didn’t answer immediately.

He’d waited years.

Some patiently.

Some badly.

Some days with hope.

Others simply because he didn’t know how to stop.

”You came home.”

”Eventually.”

”That’s enough.”

Rosalie shook her head.

”No. It isn’t.”

He waited.

”I wasted years being ashamed.”

”You were hurt.”

”I hurt you too.”

”Yes.”

She smiled sadly.

”You always did make forgiveness sound inconvenient.”

”It was.”

That surprised her into a laugh.

Then she stepped closer.

Alejandro went still.

Rosalie looked at him for several seconds.

Not uncertain.

Careful.

Then she leaned forward and kissed him.

It wasn’t dramatic.

No sweeping music.

No tears.

Just a quiet kiss between two people who had once loved each other, lost nearly everything between them, and were finally learning that returning didn’t mean pretending nothing had happened.

Alejandro hesitated only long enough to understand that she meant it.

Then he kissed her back.

From the hallway, Alex stopped.

Giovanni nearly walked into him.

”What—”

Alex raised one hand.

Giovanni followed his gaze.

Both men immediately backed away.

Quietly.

Outside the kitchen, Alex whispered, ”We saw nothing.”

”Absolutely nothing.”

”My father would kill me.”

”Your mother might.”

”Both.”

They retreated toward the veranda.

Alex was smiling.

So was Giovanni.

For all the conversations they’d had about rebuilding, second chances, and things worth returning to, Rosalie and Alejandro had apparently reached the simplest conclusion on their own.

Relationships didn’t repair themselves because people remembered how they used to feel.

They repaired when people started building something together again.

A bakery.

A home.

A morning routine.

A reason to talk.

A reason to stay.

Giovanni looked toward Alex.

”What?”

Alex asked.

”Nothing.”

”You’re staring.”

”Apparently that’s contagious.”

Alex leaned against the veranda railing.

For a moment, both looked out across the dark farm.

Weeks apart had changed surprisingly little.

If anything, it had clarified something.

They didn’t spend time together simply because work placed them in the same room.

They had continued calling when there was no bridge to repair.

Sent pictures when there was no business problem to solve.

Missed dinners they could easily have replaced with other plans.

And now, after weeks apart, standing together again felt less like restarting anything and more like continuing a conversation that had only been temporarily interrupted.

Alex bumped his shoulder lightly against Giovanni’s.

”Welcome home.”

Giovanni looked at him.

Then smiled.

”Good to be back.”

And this time, both of them knew he wasn’t only talking about the country.
