The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

The auction arena did not know how to be silent.

For years every bell strike had forged winners and prices and new signatures pressed into the market’s hidden pages. Now Maelis’ lot was gone and the master page lay broken beneath the dais, buyers’ mirrors showing men and women tearing their placards free with trembling fingers.

The auctioneer raised one hand.

”Price enforcers,” she said. ”Restore order.”

The floor opened.

Six armored figures climbed up from root channels hidden among the spectators, each holding a silver staff crowned with a mirrored scale. Their masks made the buyers’ faces appear as numbers instead of people.

’ONE. TWO. THREE.’

The scales pointed toward the rows of adult captives still waiting behind silver privacy screens.

Elena swore. ”They are going to close off the exits with people still inside.”

”Then we open the screens first,” Austin Veyron replied.

Rin was already moving. She vaulted over a discarded bid box and landed next to the closest screen, slicing open the lock. Sarielle followed, burning away the contract threads that lashed out around the captive woman’s wrists.

The woman stumbled out through the gap, silver mask still glued across her face.

”Can you run?” Rin asked.

She nodded toward the market gate.

A price enforcer planted its staff against the floor. Mirror walls sprang up across every exit.

”No,” she said. ”But I can fight.”

Rin pressed a fallen chain blade into her hands.

”Good answer.”

Nahlia climbed onto the auction dais with broken fragments of the master page held in both hands. Her former coworkers sat around the arena within scribal boxes, watching from behind ink veils.

”You know these clauses are false,” she shouted. ”You know every forced signature has a release line buried beneath it. You wrote them that way because the Ledger needed excuses to pretend consent existed!”

The scribes did not move.

The auctioneer pointed directly at Nahlia. ”She is escaped property. Her testimony has no price.”

Nahlia held up the fragments. ”Then read the page yourselves.”

A scribe within the nearest box reached toward his own mirror. Its image shifted, revealing the hidden release clause underneath all the auction terms.

The scribe’s veil trembled.

One by one, other scribes saw it too.

The price enforcers rushed them.

Austin Veyron met the first with Root-Graft. The staff clattered down toward his chest trying to stamp a value across him. He snatched it up between both hands and devoured the command that made the scale measure worth from people. The reflected number on his mask blinked out.

The enforcer hesitated.

Austin shoved it back toward the floor.

Veyra cut the chain line connecting another price enforcer’s staff to its weapon core. Kaela and Orena had remained at Grand Meridian while they finished clearing the arena, but the adult Cinder Gate scouts had more than covered their absence. Civilians slipped behind the fallen bid boxes while Seven flooded the arena with white light.

The auctioneer darted through a mirror at the rear of the dais.

”Full list!” Tessa cried before disappearing through the glass herself.

The auctioneer carried a thin black book tucked under one arm. Names were glowing along its cover: Maelis. Marcus. Elena. Austin Veyron. Others Austin recognized from the Freehold.

Austin ran after her.

A mirror hound leapt between him and the glass. He didn’t have time to sever its entire contract. He snared its collar with Root-Grasp and shattered the single order tying it to the auctioneer before shoving it aside.

The hound lurched away from him, dazed but freed enough to run rather than attack.

The auctioneer reached the glass.

Nahlia threw her pen through the glass.

It bounced off the book and pinned it into the mirror frame.

The auctioneer snarled and tried to pull the book free. Its pages tore apart. Half the names dropped to the floor and ignited as burning ink.

Austin grabbed the book before the ink could rewrite itself.

The auctioneer stepped backward through the glass, her expression leaving a permanent mark across the mirror where she stood.

”You can save names,” she told him. ”You cannot save every person those names belong to.”

The mirror exploded.

Price enforcers crumpled to the ground as auction scribes began cutting clauses out of the master-page fragments. Around the arena people peeled off masks and read the release lines hidden inside their contracts.

Freedom did not come to the market in an instant.

But no one in that arena would ever believe that prices were meant to be inevitable again.

Austin Veyron clutched the black book tight against his chest. Several Grand Meridian names were intact after the tear. Others were missing entirely.

Elena read the last visible name aloud.

’TRANSFER LIST — INNER COURT BELL VAULT.’

Veyra scanned the broken paths through the mirror route. ”The auctioneer took the bell vault path. That is the crownless route to the next gate.”

Austin snapped the book shut.

”We destroy the list before it becomes someone else’s price.”

She hardly finished speaking before the market floor trembled again.

The auctioneer had left more than shattered glass behind. Threads of black ink spilled out through the cracks around remaining bid boxes, crawling across the floor to rewrite emergency ownership clauses over anyone still trapped in the arena.

Nahlia spotted the pattern before anyone else. ”She is trying to make the market punish anyone who helped us.”

The former scribes leaped into motion before Austin could reply. One climbed out of her box with her ink veil dangling from her hands. Another seized one of the master-page fragments Austin had spared and pressed it against the spreading black clauses.

”We know where to find the release lines,” she said. ”We put them there ourselves.”

”Expose them then,” Nahlia replied.

Together, they began chanting the clauses aloud.

Each sentence of phony ownership weakened whenever its hidden exception was read. Adults who had been forced to kneel behind silver screens joined in repeating the lines that undid their signatures. Mirrors flickered across the market, confused as to which voice should hold authority now.

Austin did what he could, severing command lines out of enforcer weapons and holding falling bid boxes away from captives underneath. He did not take control of the rebellion. He did not pretend to decide where the market went from here.

This moment belonged to everyone the market had once tried to price.

Elena tapped him on the shoulder near the auction dais, wrecked beyond anyone’s use. ”If we wait much longer the Bell Vault route closes. The book’s got route residue.”

Veyra scanned the transfer list one last time. ”The auctioneer plans to trade those Grand Meridian names to inner court enforcers. She’ll make sure they are gone before anyone can reach the vault.”

Rin wiped a blade across a buyer’s placard until the writing ran free. ”Fine. We leave this rebellion to the idiots brave enough to start it. Sounds like we’ve got all day to chase down the person who made it necessary.”

Nahlia stared across the crowd of people toward the former auction scribes. Some hesitated. Others were already sorting through surviving contracts into categories: released, extorted, undecided.

”I stay long enough to teach them how to read between the lines,” she said. ”Then I’ll find you along the vault path.”

”You don’t have to join us,” Austin replied.

”I know.” She looked down at the transfer list in his hands. ”Signing their names doesn’t mean I don’t want to.”

The seed beneath Austin Veyron’s wrist pulsed toward an alleyway of mirrors just behind the market doors. Inside one bell-shaped reflection waited, silent in dark glass.

The crownless path was still available to them.

But now it led home carrying a list of names their loved ones had trusted them to safeguard.
