I Became a Side Character in the World Of Skyrim

Astrid undressed slowly, one piece of clothing at a time, her fingers lingering longer than necessary as she fought to steady the uneven rhythm of her heart. The cold morning air of Winterhold brushed against her skin, raising a faint shiver that had nothing to do with the temperature. From the river, thin wisps of steam curled upward, drifting lazily into the pale dawn and forming a translucent curtain between her and Alex soft enough to spare her modesty, yet fragile enough that she knew she was still being seen.

She folded her arms instinctively, shoulders drawing inward, and shot him a shy glance from beneath her lashes.

“Don’t… don’t look at me like that,” Astrid murmured, her voice barely louder than the river itself. A warm blush crept across her cheeks, betraying her far more than words ever could.

Alex let out a quiet laugh, low and amused, though his eyes softened rather than teased. After a heartbeat’s hesitation, he turned his back to her, raising both hands in mock surrender.

“Alright, alright. I said I wouldn’t,” he replied. Still, the curve of his smile visible even in profile remained unapologetically playful.

Only then did Astrid exhale, the tension easing from her shoulders. She stepped into the river carefully, testing the surface with her toes before lowering herself in. The warmth enveloped her almost instantly, wrapping around her legs like a gentle embrace. The contrast to the snow-dusted stones along the bank made her sigh in relief, her posture relaxing as the heat chased away the lingering chill.

A few seconds later, the water rippled again as Alex joined her. He sucked in a sharp breath as the warmth spread through him, a quiet shudder passing through his frame before he settled onto a rock half-submerged beneath the surface.

“Honestly,” he said, resting one arm behind him for balance, “if it weren’t for a fireball spell keeping this water warm, there’s no chance I’d ever bathe here.”

Astrid laughed softly, the sound light and unguarded. She scooped water with her hands and poured it over her arm, watching the steam rise as it slid down her skin.

“As the Dragonborn, I’ve learned to live with the cold,” she replied, tilting her head toward him, her expression teasing yet sincere. “But… I suppose I don’t mind if you help make it warmer.”

They settled beside one another, close enough that the warmth of his presence was unmistakable. Their shoulders hovered a breath apart, occasionally brushing as the river shifted around them small, accidental touches that neither of them moved to avoid.

No great words were exchanged after that. There was only the quiet murmur of flowing water, the soft rhythm of their breathing, and the unspoken comfort of simply being together. For the first time in a long while, the weight of prophecy, dragons, and destiny felt distant held at bay by warmth, steam, and the quiet romance of the moment they shared.

For a while, neither of them spoke. The river flowed lazily around the stones, carrying thin ribbons of steam into the pale morning air. Somewhere beyond the riverbank, snow slid softly from an overhanging rock, the sound faint but sharp in the stillness. The world felt hushed, as if Winterhold itself were holding its breath.

Astrid was the one who finally broke the silence.

She shifted slightly, drawing one knee closer to her chest beneath the water, her fingers tracing idle circles on the river’s surface. Her gaze lingered on the ripples before she lifted her eyes to Alex, her voice quiet but steady.

“Alex… after this, we really are heading north, aren’t we?”

Alex didn’t answer right away. He leaned back a little, resting his weight against the smooth stone behind him, and followed her gaze toward the horizon. Beyond the riverbank, the land dropped away into mist, where the sea lay hidden beneath a blanket of fog. The waves were invisible, but their distant, hollow rhythm carried faintly through the air slow, endless, and cold.

“Yes,” he said at last, his tone calm but heavy with certainty. “There’s a remote outpost out on the ice. Almost nothing around it. No roads, no warmth. It’s where a man lives alone either a madman… or a genius.” His fingers curled slightly against the rock as he spoke the name. “Septimus Signus. And he possesses a Blank Lexicon. .”

Astrid turned fully toward him now, the water rippling as she moved. Her brows knit together, curiosity and concern mixing in her expression.

“And the Blank Lexicon. ?” she asked, watching his face closely.

Alex looked down for a moment, then tapped his inventory pouch by instinct, the dull clink inside answering softly.

“It’s the key,” he said. “The key to reaching the Elder Scroll.” He paused, letting the words settle like falling snow. “And the Elder Scroll… is one of the few paths that can lead us to Alduin.”

The warmth of the water couldn’t soften the edge in Astrid’s eyes as she absorbed that. Her jaw tightened, shoulders straightening as if she were bracing herself against an unseen wind. Fear flickered there brief, honest but it didn’t stay long. What remained was resolve, sharp and unyielding.

“If that’s the road we have to walk,” she said quietly, her hand drifting closer to his beneath the water, “then I’ll walk it with you.”

Alex turned back to her, surprised for just a heartbeat. Then his expression eased into a faint, genuine smile one meant only for her. The tension in his shoulders loosened, and for a fleeting moment, the weight of dragon gods, ancient prophecies, and Dwemer madness slipped from his mind.

All that existed was the gentle heat of the river, the cold air curling above it, and Astrid beside him steady, unwavering, and warm in a world of ice.

Not long after, they emerged from the river. The moment the warm water released them, the cold pounced without mercy. Astrid sucked in a sharp breath as the icy air kissed her damp skin, goosebumps rising instantly along her arms. She hurried to dry herself, fingers stiff as she rubbed the cloth across her shoulders and hair. Alex wasn’t faring much better he exhaled through clenched teeth, steam pouring from his breath as he pulled on his clothes as quickly as his numbing hands would allow.

Once dressed, the cold still lingered, but it felt less oppressive somehow. Their movements were lighter, their expressions calmer as if the river had washed away more than just fatigue.

A few hours later, Winterhold lay behind them.

The farther north they traveled, the harsher the world became. Snow thickened beneath their boots, each step sinking deeper than the last. The land stretched endlessly in all directions, a vast white silence broken only by the crunch of ice and the distant roar of the sea. The wind carried a sharp, salty bite, tearing through cloaks and armor alike, burrowing into bone and breath.

Ahead, through swirling snow and drifting fog, something dark interrupted the endless white.

A lone structure stood upon the ice, small and hunched against the storm its silhouette jagged and unnatural. It looked less like a shelter and more like a scar, a black wound carved into the frozen world.

Astrid slowed, squinting against the wind. She raised one gloved hand to shield her eyes, her voice barely carrying over the gale.

“That’s… his home?”

Alex stopped beside her, following her gaze. He nodded slowly, his expression grave.

“The Outpost of Septimus Signus.”

As they drew closer, the air seemed to change. The wind howled louder around the structure, curling around its iron supports like grasping fingers. Frost clung thickly to the walls, and strange markings were half-buried beneath layers of ice.

Without warning, the old iron door groaned and swung open on its own, the sound long and tortured, echoing across the frozen plain. A wave of stale, cold air spilled out from within.

From the darkness inside came a low, broken muttering words tumbling over one another in uneven rhythm. It was impossible to tell whether the voice was whispering prayers, muttering calculations, or unraveling into madness.

“Ah… at last,” the voice crooned, echoing strangely from the depths.

“Visitors. And… I can smell destiny.”

Astrid felt a chill crawl up her spine, and she instinctively shifted closer to Alex. He met her gaze, his jaw set, one hand already resting near his gear.

They exchanged a silent look an unspoken understanding passing between them.

Their path toward the secrets of the Elder Scroll had crossed a threshold.
