Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 554: Chapter 549: Papers

Location:Ashmarch — The Southern Gate Country

Date/Time:10–11 Sparkfall 9943 AZI, Quenchday into Grindday

Realm:Mid Realm

Ashmarch was loud in a way that had nothing to do with people.

Carts, mostly. A town that exists because there is a door in it does not grow the way other towns grow — it grows in one direction, toward the door, and everything in it is either going through or waiting to, and the whole place had the sound of things being moved and set down and picked up again by men who had done it four thousand times.

Cangwei had been in it two days, and nobody had looked at her once.

That was the first thing she had checked. She had walked the length of the upper street on the first afternoon with her hands loose and her shoulders down and had waited to be wrong about it, and had not been. Human form does not require thinking about after the first hour. Human bearing does. She had spent a fortnight in the north country practicing being somebody who steps out of the way.

Getting here as herself had never been available.

A black dragon who walks out of Zhū’kethara and is next heard of going down toward the Mid Realm is a line on a page, and there is one house on this world that line runs back to, and one woman in three realms who reads those pages for a living. Cangwei’s own people did the same work in the other direction and did it better. She had spent centuries being told what came off roads by men who counted who was on them, and she was not going to walk onto one and assume nobody else had thought of it.

So she had not been Cangwei since the first of Emberrise.

The livery had cost her almost nothing, which was the argument for it. Sect colors are not guarded. Bronze dragons run couriers up and down the eastern roads in numbers, in human form, carrying tallies and letters and other people’s money, and one more of them in a bronze-corded coat with a wooden tally at the belt is furniture. She had taken a name out of her own head — Tonghe, which is a name a bronze mother might plausibly give a daughter — and gone south as somebody with errands.

And bronze was not a guess. It was the one flight on this world that could not possibly be doing what she was doing. The dwarves had seen to that a long time ago and had never explained themselves. Bronze dragons hold no Realm Seals. Not one. So a bronze courier on a southern road is a woman going about the middle of the world, because the bottom of it is shut to her by definition, and anybody watching that road and wondering where she was headed would stop wondering at exactly the point Cangwei needed them to.

It was also the flight that had helped put a silver queen in chains, and she wore their color for five weeks and thought about that most days.

The rest of it was discipline, and the discipline was the sky. She did not fly. Not once, not at night, not over empty country — because a black shape at height is a signature and there is no disguise that works on it. Five weeks of roads, at the speed of a woman with a horse, when she could have crossed the same ground in three days.

She had held the whole of it eleven days past the point where she needed it, up through the northern country and down the Mid Realm’s eastern road, because the value of a false trail is entirely in what happens after you decide you are clear. Then she had burned the coat and the tally in a firepit on a moor with nobody within a day of her, in the rain. It took much longer to burn than she expected. She suspected that was true of most things you want gone.

The Upper Gate had been the part she braced for and the part that turned out to be nothing.

They had sealed her at the threshold. That was the word for it, and it was accurate — everything above Apexblight goes behind a door and stays there while you are in the Mid Realm, and she had stood in the mouth of the passage with her teeth set, waiting for it.

And nothing had happened.

Cangwei was Peak Apexblight. She had been Peak Apexblight for a very long time and had stopped thinking of it as a number some centuries ago, and the Laws — she did not have that word yet, then — had reached for whatever was above the ceiling, and found nothing above it, and let her walk through.

She had come out the other side unchanged, in a country she had never been to, and had understood two things at once. That she had prepared for the wrong crossing. And that the next one was not going to be like that at all.

***

She went to look at the Gate before she went anywhere near buying a way through it.

The hall was bigger than the town. It had been built by people who expected traffic and it got it — a stone barn of a place with a roof high enough to have weather in it, and light coming down in bars from windows nobody had cleaned since the Sundering, and two lines running the length of the floor.

The lines were the whole of it, and it took Cangwei about ten minutes to see that.

On the left, going out: a rail, a table, one clerk. A man held up a folded paper, and the clerk looked at it for as long as it takes to look at a paper, and the man went through. Then a woman with a bale on her back. Then two more. It moved at the speed of walking. Nobody sat down, because nobody was there long enough to want to.

On the right, coming in: the machine.

Eight desks. Every one of them working. Baggage on trestles with the straps off and the contents out on the boards, and men in white going through it item by item and putting each item back in a different order than it came out, which Cangwei recognized immediately as deliberate and thought was rather good. Two clerks to a desk, one asking and one writing. A holding pen of benches where perhaps a hundred people sat with their hands in their laps in the particular stillness of people who have been told it will be a while and have been told it twice.

She counted the ledgers. Nine, on a shelf behind the desks, and a man whose entire employment appeared to be carrying them back and forth.

Nothing came into the Mid Realm without going into a book.

Nothing going out was written down at all.

They do not care who leaves. She turned that over, standing against a pillar with her arms folded, in the posture of a woman waiting for somebody. They care what arrives.

It made sense. It made so much sense that she was annoyed with herself for having assumed the reverse for four months. A realm that has closed its passages has not closed them to keep its people in.

The senior man on the arrivals side was a registrar called Stennes, which she learned because four separate people said it to him in the space of an hour, in the tone people use for a man who has the authority to send you back. He was not cruel. She watched him for a long time to be sure of that, and he was not. He was thorough. He asked a farrier the same question three different ways and got three answers that agreed, and let him through, and he asked a young man in a good coat the same question twice and did not like the second answer and sent him to the benches.

Thoroughness, Cangwei thought, is worse than cruelty. Cruelty makes mistakes.

***

At the fourth hour the children came up.

She heard them before she saw them, which was only that the hall got quieter — the arrivals side dropped its noise the way a room drops it when something is coming through the door, and then went back to work, and that was the whole of the reaction.

There were thirty of them.

They came out of the passage mouth in a column of two, and they were between six and eleven or so, and they were not distressed. That was the thing Cangwei noticed first and did not know what to do with. They were not crying. They were not being handled. They walked like children who have been walking for a while and have been told where they are going, and four adults in Temple white walked with them, and one of them was carrying the smallest on her hip.

The column went past the eight desks and did not stop at any of them.

Stennes came out from behind his table and met the woman at the front, and they spoke for perhaps twenty seconds, and he went back and took a ledger and wrote in it, and the column walked on through the far arch and out of the hall.

Cangwei watched him write.

He wrote for about as long as it takes to write one line.

Not thirty lines. One. Thirty children came up out of the Lower Realm into a realm that opens every bag and asks a farrier the same question three times, and they went into the book as a single entry, and the man carrying ledgers took it away and brought another, and the eight desks went on with a bale of hides and an argument about a broken seal on a crate.

Nobody in that hall found any of it worth a second look.

That was the part.

Cangwei stood against her pillar and put it where she put everything, which was down, in order, with the rest. She had no idea what she had just seen. She had a very clear idea of what it meant that nobody else thought they had seen anything, and that was a different sort of fact, and she was not there for it, and she filed it and left the hall.

***

The Slagrows were cut into the spoil from whatever the mountain had been before it was a gate, three streets down and one street under, and Cangwei found them by walking downhill until the buildings stopped being new.

Ottilie Marrek wrote letters.

That was the sign over the door, and it was true. Contracts, indentures, wills, letters home for men who could not write them; a narrow room with a good window, a desk under it, and a woman of about fifty with ink on the side of her hand who did not stand up when a customer came in.

”Sit,” she said, and went on with what she was doing.

Cangwei sat. There was a boy on a stool by the door, fourteen or so, doing nothing with great attention.

”Piet. Go and see if Hallam has the wax.”

”He hasn’t.”

”Go and see anyway.”

The boy went. Ottilie Marrek finished her line, blotted it, put the pen down, and looked at Cangwei properly for the first time.

”You’re not from the letters,” she said.

”No.”

”No. You came down the hill instead of up it.” She sat back. ”Well. What are you asking for? And don’t dress it.”

”A person,” Cangwei said. ”Not a paper. I do not want a permit with a false name on it. I want to be somebody, with a post and a house behind me and a reason to be going where I am going.”

Something in the woman’s face changed, and it was not surprise. It was closer to relief.

”Right,” Ottilie said. ”Good. Half of them come in here asking for a name. A name gets you eleven minutes.” She pulled a drawer and did not open it. ”Which way?”

”Down.”

”Course you are.” She looked at Cangwei’s hands, then her boots, then her face, and took her time about all three. ”Not a trader. You’d have said a cargo. Not family — family’s the easiest thing in the world to sell, and you’d have taken it.” A pause. ”I don’t want the rest.”

”I was not going to give it to you.”

”I know. That’s why the price is what it is.”

They did not haggle. Cangwei put four pieces of uncut metal on the desk, and Ottilie looked at them without touching them and said the mark on a house ingot is worth less than nothing to her, and Cangwei said there was no mark on anything she carried, and Ottilie picked one up then and turned it in the light and put it down and said that would do.

”Temple,” she said. ”It’s the only thing going down that doesn’t get asked why. Envoy. Not a priest — a priest is somebody people talk to. An envoy’s a clerk with a better coat.”

”Give her a grievance.”

Ottilie’s eyebrows went up about a finger’s width. ”Say more.”

”Somebody being posted south, unwillingly, complains about it,” Cangwei said. ”It is the most ordinary noise in any hall in three realms. Nobody looks at a woman who is complaining. They look at a woman who is being pleasant.”

”Huh.” The scrivener pulled a sheet toward her and began to write, and spoke while she wrote, which Cangwei had noticed was a thing people did when they wanted to say something without it being a conversation. ”Marit Aldren. Aldren’s a north name; nobody down there knows one from another. Six years in the registry office, passed over twice, sent down to inventory Temple holdings on a continent nobody wants.” She dipped the pen. ”That’s your grievance. It’s a real posting. They do it to people.”

”How long will these hold?”

”Depends what you’re asking.”

”I am asking how long.”

Ottilie kept writing. ”Going out — forever. Nobody reads the departures book because there isn’t one.” She turned the sheet and started the second side. ”Arriving is a different animal. You’ll go through a hall down there that works the way the one up the hill works, because it’s the same people, and they’ll write you down. And the writing’s fine. The writing’s what you’re paying for.” She stopped, and looked up, and the look was flat and entirely without malice. ”It holds until somebody asks after you. That’s not me being careful. It’s the truth of the trade. A person with a post has somebody expecting her, and the day they wonder where she got to, this stops being papers and starts being a question.”

”How long is that?”

”Could be years. Could be a season. Depends on how much anybody wants to find you, and I don’t know how much anybody does.” She went back to writing. ”You do.”

***

Cangwei carried Marit Aldren out of the Slagrows in an oilcloth wallet against her ribs and walked up the hill in the dark.

It was a good posting and a good grievance, and it would get her onto the rail, past a bored man, and into the passage, and she had a very clear picture now of what was standing at the other end of it.

And she had no Seal.

That was the whole of the second half, and no amount of paper touched it. Hilgrund had put it in front of her in a mountain, unasked, over a cup of something: a Seal is written down and priced, and you can be sorry about it in advance, and going down without one does not take a tier. It takes out of the core. And it takes whatever it takes.

Nobody had a number.

She stood at the top of the upper street where the ground fell away east, and looked at the lights of the hall, and did the arithmetic one last time in the cold.

Thorgrund would take months. Months she did not have, on a request whose purpose she had refused to state, and by the end of it there would be a Seal cut in a clan hall with her name on it and a signatory who remembered why he had hesitated. A Seal is a record. That is what a Seal is.

And there was one woman in three realms who read records.

Her house thought she was in seclusion. She had told the steward so herself, because it is the one thing nobody interrupts and nobody verifies, and a dragon who goes into seclusion can be gone a decade before anybody thinks to be curious. Da’Ren believed she had gone home. Heiteng, wherever he was and whatever was holding him, believed the same or believed nothing at all.

She intended all three of them to go on believing it.

Cangwei went down the hill toward the hall in the dark, with a dead woman’s history in an oilcloth wallet and no Seal anywhere on her, and she was not frightened, and she noticed that she was not, and put that away with everything else to look at later.
