Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 531: Chapter 526: The Ceiling

Location:Obsidian Academy — The Lower Hall

Date/Time:2 Ashwhisper, 9942 AZI — Continuous

Realm:Lower Realm

”There is one more thing tonight,” Jayde said, ”and I have left it until last on purpose, because everything else you have heard is arithmetic and this one is not.”

Meifen looked up.

”Bai Shu. An hour ago I told you that you will be standing on a wall in seventy years, and you have been sitting with it since, and I want to know what you did with it.”

Bai Shu had not expected to be asked.

”I worked out how old I would be,” she said. ”Ninety-nine.”

”And then?”

”...And then I worked out how old my mother would be.” She said it to the table. ”And then I stopped.”

”What tier is she?”

”Ashborn. Entry. She never had the chance at anything else; there were four of us and the kiln to keep.”

”How old?”

”Fifty-one.”

”Then she will not see it,” Jayde said. ”She will be gone about thirty years before the sky opens, and so will your father, and so will every single person in that village who is what your mother is — and that is seven people in ten on this continent.”

Nobody said anything.

”That is the number I have not said all night, and it is the biggest one in the report.” Jayde put both hands on the table. ”Roughly seven in ten of this realm are Ashborn and will die Ashborn, at eighty years old, or ninety if they were lucky in what they could afford. A Peak Flamewrought lives eight hundred. The men who own the herb fields will bury their own great-grandchildren’s grandchildren and not think it remarkable.” She let it sit. ”Everybody explains that with talent. It is not talent. Talent does not distribute itself seven-to-ten by province and by surname.”

”Resources,” Shenwei said.

”Resources. Herbs, pills, baths, quiet years, and somebody who knows what they are doing standing over you when it matters.” She turned her hand over. ”Ninety-five percent of all of it on this continent sits with the Temple and the great houses. Bai Shu’s mother is not less able than any Flamewrought in a clan compound. She had four children and a kiln.”

***

”Then say what you want from us,” Zhong said.

”Inferno-tempered. Every one of you who can reach it, as fast as it can be done and faster than anybody currently thinks possible — and Zhong is already there and will go up inside it.”

Shenwei put both hands flat on the table.

”An hour ago in this room you told me you were going to teach an entire cohort to shut it off,” he said. ”Now you want all of us further up. I would like the two of those in the same sentence before I write either of them down.”

”Then take the sentence.” Jayde did not hesitate. ”Down there, it is a beacon, and it kills you. Up here, on the day the sky opens, it is the difference between an officer who is useful and an officer who is furniture. Those are two different places and two different fights, and a man who cannot hold both in his head has no business in either.” She looked at him. ”The cohort learns to shut it off and to be as strong as I can make them, and the point of the training is that the two are not the same act.”

Shenwei thought about it for a moment.

”That is not a contradiction,” he said. ”That is a switch.”

”It is a switch. Nobody on this continent has ever needed one, because nobody has ever fought anything where being loud was the wrong answer.” Jayde put her palm flat. ”Write that down as the founding sentence of your faculty if you like. It is more useful than most of what I have said tonight.”

Feng Lian put her copy down flat.

”I am thirty-one and Sparkforged,” she said.

”You are thirty-one and Sparkforged, and if you had been born into a clan you would have been Flamewrought at nineteen, and it would not have been because you were better.” Jayde looked at her. ”We have settled that you will be alive. That is not the problem, and it stopped being the problem an hour ago. What I am not prepared to have is the ten of you alive and irrelevant — standing in the middle of it at two tiers below what is walking through the gate, giving orders to people who have outgrown us.”

”So it is not lifespan,” Ruifen said.

”For this table it is not lifespan. For everybody outside this room it is nothing but lifespan, and I want both of those in your heads at once.” Jayde’s voice did not change. ”You will live to see the war. Bai Shu’s mother will not live to see her granddaughter conscripted. Both of those are what the herb fields are for.”

***

Zhong had not moved for some time.

”Then let me put the objection properly, because you are going to hear it from three hundred instructors and I would rather it came from me first.” He said it evenly. ”I am Entry Inferno-tempered, which is as high as anybody was willing to send into that mountain and nowhere near the highest on it. There are men in this building I do not measure myself against, and I am not going to start tonight.” He let that lie where it fell. ”And I have stood in a room with a Blazecrowned twice in my life — once at a clan seat in Ironmarch and once at a funeral — so do not tell me the ceiling is imaginary. It is not. It is real, and I have felt it standing four paces away, and every great house on this continent keeps exactly one of them in a compound doing nothing whatsoever until the day somebody threatens the family.”

”Yes,” Jayde said. ”All of that is true, and none of it is the point I am making, and I want to separate two things that this continent has spent ten thousand years welding together.”

She held up one hand.

”Above Blazecrowned, the ceiling is real. It is not an inventory, and it is not a conspiracy, and no herb ever grown will move it.” She said it flatly, because it was the part she could not fix. ”Nobody advances into Apexblight in the Lower Realm. Not with every pill in creation, not with four hundred years and a private valley. The realm will not hold it. To go further than Blazecrowned, you have to physically stand in the Mid Realm — and there is exactly one body on this world that decides who crosses, and it is not me, and it is not a clan.”

Ryo’s head came up.

”The Temple.”

”The Temple. And they have never once let a Blazecrowned through that passage as a free man.” Jayde put the hand down. ”He crosses in a Temple column, under a Temple banner, having taken whatever it is they ask him to take — or he does not cross at all, and he sits in a compound in Ironmarch for four thousand years being a family’s insurance policy.”

Nobody said anything for a moment.

”That is why every clan has one,” Zhong said slowly. ”I have wondered about that since I was thirty. Not two. Not six. One, always, and always the same arrangement.”

”Because the second one has nowhere to go and nothing to do, and a man at the top of a wall with nothing to do is a danger to the people who put him there.” Jayde let it sit. ”Blazecrowned is not a summit on this continent. It is a shelf, and the Temple owns the only stair off it, and every man standing on that shelf has already had the offer.”

***

”Then the other thing,” she said. ”Because you asked whether the ceiling is real, and the honest answer is that there are two of them, and the one that matters to me is not the one you have been thinking about.”

”Say it.”

”Everything below Blazecrowned is inventory.” Jayde put her palm flat. ”Seven in ten of this realm are Ashborn and will die Ashborn, and not one of them is stopped by any law of the world. They are stopped by a shortage of cheap herbs that nobody has ever bothered to grow. There is no wall between an Ashborn and Peak Flamewrought except supply, and it has held for ten thousand years because everybody underneath it agreed with the people on top about what it was.”

Zhong sat back very slowly.

”I have been telling students the opposite for fifteen years.”

”You have been telling them what you were told, and so was the man who told you.” Jayde did not let him take it. ”That is what four wars does to a body of knowledge, and I am not going to stand here and let you carry it personally when it is the entire point of the report you just read.”

”There is a second reason nobody moves past Flamewrought,” Shenwei said, ”and it is not in any inventory.”

The room went quiet in a different way.

”The Filter.” He was looking at his hands. ”To take Inferno-tempered, you burn out a deep emotion. Permanently. You choose one, and you never have it again — grief, or rage, or fear, or —” He stopped. ”Most people who could pay it will not. I never intended to.”

Everybody in the room looked, very briefly, at Zhong, and then made themselves stop.

Zhong said nothing at all.

”That is why the number I am about to give you stops where it stops,” Jayde said. ”I am not going to build an institution that asks several million people to burn a piece of themselves out so that a continent can be defended. That is what the clans do to their sons, and it is the reason half of them are the way they are.” She put her palm flat. ”The force gets to Flamewrought. Everything above that is voluntary, one person at a time, with somebody sitting down with them who has already paid it and can tell them what it actually costs, and it is never a condition of any post in this force. I want that written into the practice tonight.”

”And this table,” Ruifen said.

”This table is ten people who have all just chosen something with their eyes open once already tonight, and I will not tell you what to do twice in one evening.” Jayde looked around at them. ”But I want every one of you at Peak Flamewrought inside twenty years, and I am telling you now that I intend to make that ordinary rather than remarkable.”

***

”And now the last thing,” Jayde said, ”and it is the one I actually wanted you in this room for, because it is the only part of tonight that could make everything else cheaper — and not one person on this continent has ever been given a reason to ask it.”

She waited until all of them were looking at her.

”Dragons do not sacrifice.”

Nobody said anything, because nobody had any idea what to do with the sentence.

”Neither do demons. Neither do dwarves, or giants, or elves, or aetherwings.” Jayde said it flatly and without any decoration at all. ”Not one of them burns out an emotion to cross a threshold. Not one of them has ever heard of doing it. I have asked — not casually and not once — and the answer came back the same way every time, which was polite, and slow, and with the distinct impression that I had said something obscene at a dinner table.”

”Then how do they cross?” Feng Lian asked.

”They cross. That is the entire answer, and it took me a month to accept it. They accumulate, they consolidate, they break through, and they arrive on the other side with everything they walked in with.”

Zhong had come forward in his chair.

”They are born higher,” he said. ”That is the answer everyone gives. Mid Realm children are born Sparkforged. Upper Realm children are born Flamewrought. They never make the crossings we make.”

”That accounts for the bottom of the ladder. It does not account for anything above it.” Jayde looked at him. ”A dragon does not stop at Flamewrought. It goes up and up and up for twenty thousand years, and it never once puts a piece of itself down on the table to do it. Whatever we are doing, it is not what advancement is. It is what advancement is for us.”

***

”And there is a worse one,” she said, ”and it has been sitting in this Academy the whole time.”

She let it come.

”Three weeks ago Qin sat in a room two floors above us and told me that when the policy was made he was junior, and that he was not asked, and that he has thought about it every day since.” Jayde’s voice did not change. ”That is regret. Ten thousand years of it, undiminished, in a man who has been carrying it since before this Academy had the shape it has now. Nobody took grief out of him. Whatever he crossed to get where he is, he crossed it whole.”

Zhong said nothing at all. His hands had gone flat on the table again.

”And Heizan carries a piece of dried fruit in his pocket that he does not eat, and has carried it for longer than any of us have been alive, and if any of you can construct an explanation for that which does not involve a man feeling something, I would like to hear it.”

”Then they did not pay,” Ruifen said.

”Either they did not pay, or they paid something else, or the price is not what we have been told it is.” Jayde put her hand flat. ”I do not know which. It is the largest open question I have, and I am not going to pretend I am close to the answer. Eden is.”

***

Eden put the paper down for the first time all night.

”Three things,” she said. ”None of them is a conclusion, and I want that understood before I open my mouth.”

”We will take them anyway,” Zhong said.

”First. The Emberforge Path is a path. Not the path — a path.” Eden held up one finger. ”Every manual on this continent describes it, every instructor teaches it, and every one of you had it from somebody who had it from somebody. That is not because it is the only one that exists. It is because it is the only one that survived.” She let that connect itself to the eleven pages on the table. ”Four times over, the people carrying every other method died in a village, and the one that lived is the one the institutions kept — and institutions are exactly the sort of thing that survives when the villages do not.”

Shenwei made a small sound. He had got there about a sentence ahead.

”Second.” A second finger. ”I have examined eleven people before and after a threshold crossing, four of them in that mountain and seven since. The crossing is a physical event. Meridian restructure, core expansion, measurable, repeatable, and I can describe it well enough now to draw it.” Eden looked around at them. ”I cannot find the place where the emotion is required. I can find where the tissue changes. I cannot find where the grief goes. There is nothing in the mechanism that needs it, and I have been looking for three months specifically in order to be proven wrong.”

”That is not proof it is unnecessary,” Ruifen said.

”No. It is the absence of proof that it is necessary, which is a very different and much weaker thing, and I would say so to anybody who asked.” Eden did not blink. ”It is also the exact shape of what you find when a step has been added to a procedure by somebody, rather than being part of it.”

Bai Shu had stopped writing halfway through a word.

”Third,” Eden said. ”And this one is not medicine, so take it for what it is worth. Whoever advances on this path loses a specific thing, and the thing is always one of four, and the four are grief, rage, fear, and love.” She put her hand down. ”Consider what a realm looks like after ten thousand years of that. Consider who is easiest to rule.”

The lamp ticked, and nobody used the gap.

***

”I am not going to tell you it can be undone,” Jayde said. ”It may not be. It may be that we are simply built differently and the answer is dull and biological, and I will publish it and be disappointed.” She looked around at every one of them. ”But if it is an addition — if somebody at some point wrote that step into the manual — then every human on this continent who has gone above Flamewrought in ten thousand years has been maimed for nothing, and one of them is sitting at this table.”

Zhong finally moved.

”How long,” he said.

”Years. Four people are on it, with Eden, and two of them are better at this than anybody either of us will ever meet, and I am not going to say who they are, and you are all going to have to live with that as well.”

”Years,” Zhong repeated.

”I will not give you a better number than that, and you would not believe me if I did.”

Zhong looked at the table for a while. When he spoke, he did not sound any different at all, which was somehow the worst part of it.

”Then find out before I have to stand next to a student while she pays it,” he said. ”I have done that eleven times. I would prefer eleven to be the number.”

***

”Then give us the numbers,” Meifen said. ”You have them. You have not said them all night, and you have had them the whole time.”

”Two.”

She held up one finger.

”The next Harrowing is fifty years out. The historical loss is a third — one in three of those children does not come home, and everybody on this continent has decided that is the weather.” Jayde’s voice did not change. ”The next one goes down trained, equipped, fed, and standing at a tier this realm currently considers exceptional. I want the loss under one in ten. I would like it under one in twenty, and I will not promise what I cannot build.”

Bai Shu made a sound. She got a hand over it.

”And the second,” Meifen said.

”Seven in ten of this realm are Ashborn today.” Jayde put the second finger down. ”In seventy years I want seven in ten at Peak Flamewrought. Not the schools. Not the force. The realm.”

The hall was completely silent.

Nobody asked her what it meant. Jayde said it anyway, because she wanted it standing in the room in words before any of them carried it out of the door.

”It means the thing that comes through the gate arrives on a continent that does not look like the one they measured,” Jayde said it very quietly. ”It means their weakest meets a farmer who is Flamewrought. It means the clans cannot own a province by owning the only medicine in it. It means a potter in a village lives eight hundred years and buries nobody at fifty-one.” She looked around the table at all of them. ”And it means when I say the words in that one week, sixty years from now, I am saying them to people who are strong enough that the sentence is information and not a death notice.”

It took a while for anybody to want to speak after that.

***

”Then say how it starts,” Shenwei said. ”Because seven in ten of a realm is not a plan, it is a wish, and you have not once tonight told us what happens in the first year.”

”Herbs. Before the halls, before the baths, before a single pill.” Jayde had the answer ready. ”In the spring we begin paying tenant farmers to put ground under herb. Not the whole holding — a strip, on the worst of their land, at a price fixed for ten years whether the crop is good or not, and we buy every leaf of it whether we need it or not.”

”On the worst of their land,” Ryo repeated.

”The best of it grows food, and I am not taking bread out of a province to grow medicine for it. And most of what I want does not care.” She looked at Eden. ”Eden and I have spent two months on the equipment. Drying frames a village carpenter can build off a sheet. A cutting bed that does not need a formation. Two changes to a common press that treble what comes out of it. None of it is clever. All of it is the difference between a farmer’s wife doing this in her evenings and nobody doing it at all.”

”And what are you growing?” Meifen asked. ”Because if you are about to say bloodvine and moonleaf, every clan in four provinces will have burned the fields by the second harvest.”

”I am not. That is the part I want all of you to hear properly.” Jayde put her hand flat. ”The bottom of the shelf. Basic herbs. The things that go into a medicinal bath and an entry pill and nothing else — the compounds a Grade 5 uses at fourteen, and a clan child stops needing at nine.”

Feng Lian’s head came up.

”Nobody grows those,” she said.

”Nobody has ever grown those.” Jayde let it sit. ”There is no market for them, because the people who have the land and the refiners and the halls have spent ten thousand years chasing what a Flamewrought needs, because that is where the money is. Nobody with any power has ever once looked down. Seven people in ten on this continent are Ashborn and will die Ashborn, and the thing standing between them and the next tier is not talent, and it is not even money — it is that the thing they need is not made. Anywhere. By anybody.”

”So there is no shortage,” Shenwei said slowly. ”There is an absence.”

”There is an absence, and an absence is the cheapest thing in the world to fill, and I do not expect a single clan to notice for eleven years because it will not occur to them that anybody would bother.”
