Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 503: Chapter 498: Into the Pavilion

Location:The Pavilion (Jayde’s soul-space) / Dragon Estate

Date/Time:4 Frostforge, 9942 AZI

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

The mantis stopped at the threshold and would not move.

Not couldn’t. Would not. The creature stood at the boundary of the soul-space with its sensory pits fully extended, reading whatever was on the other side with the sustained, unhurried attention of a predator that had encountered something entirely outside its experience and had elected to stand still until it understood what it was looking at.

Jayde waited. She had learned across a year that the mantis did not respond to pushing. It responded to patience, and to her hand on its head-plate, and to the specific quality of stillness that meant I am here, and I am not leaving, and you may take as long as you need.

The Pavilion’s energy drifted across the boundary. Not corruption. Not the dense mineral-tinged essence the Vel’thari produced. Something the creature had no framework for at all — warm, clean, sitting at the far end of a spectrum from everything it had been born into.

Behind her, Isha’s light was bright enough to throw her shadow across the threshold and onto the chitin.

”It is hesitating,” Isha said.

”It’s deciding.”

”Those are the same thing.”

”They aren’t close to the same thing, and you know it, because you spent three minutes deciding whether to pull a thread and nobody who watched you would have called it hesitating.”

The golden light dimmed half a degree, which was Isha’s version of being told.

”Before it steps through,” he said, ”you should hear the actual rule. Not the version where I am fussy about my floor.”

”Say it.”

”Pavilion energy is forbidden from entering that containment. That is the prohibition. Not a preference — a hard boundary written by your father.” The light had gone very steady. ”Divine essence is a feast to them. Put enough of it inside that seal, and the Brood-Mothers can grow castes that were never meant to exist. Enough beyond that and the thing underneath them stops being dormant.”

Jayde said nothing.

”I have kept that boundary for ninety-eight thousand years without ever being told that Pyratheon built your Academy directly on top of the seal it was written for. He did not mention it. I have had rather a lot to think about since I woke.” A pause. ”And what you are asking me to do now is the same catastrophe running backward. Not my essence into their house. One of them into mine — into the largest concentration of divine energy standing anywhere in the Lower Realm.”

”Yes.”

”I want you to say that you understand what I am agreeing to.”

”I understand exactly what you’re agreeing to,” Jayde said. ”So does it.”

”How can you possibly—”

”Because I’ve been the test.” She put her palm flat on the head-plate. ”Look at me, Isha. Divine blood. Not sealed, not veiled, not the disguise — actual blood, in a body, walking around a containment where that is the one thing that is never supposed to be. I am the feast. I have been the feast for a year.”

The light did not move.

”It carried me on its back for most of that year,” she said. ”It slept beside my cot. It has had me one bite away, alone, in the dark, ten thousand times. It fought a war for me and it bled for me and it never once tried.”

A long silence in the entrance hall.

”That is a considerably better argument than I was braced for,” Isha said.

”I’ve had a year to build it.”

The mantis took one step across the threshold.

***

Every diagnostic formation Isha possessed activated at once.

The entrance hall lit like a festival. Ward signatures blazing. Sensory arrays at maximum. The whole network reading the Charling with the overwhelming thoroughness of a keeper who had maintained a prohibition against exactly this since before there were nations, and was now watching the prohibited thing walk across his floor.

”Consumption pathways,” Isha said. Rapid. Clinical. The scholar overriding the homeowner. ”Dormant. Confirmed dormant. The colony feeding architecture is not engaging. Ambient energy is passing through the sensory pits and the chitin matrix without triggering the metabolic cascade.”

”Good.”

”Do not say good yet. I have been running diagnostics for four seconds.”

The mantis took another step. The pits were fully out — reading the formation lines in the floor, the temperature, the signature of a space maintained by a being considerably older and very much more particular than most nations.

It hummed. Not the low deep sound. Something higher and tentative — an organism whose entire existence had been defined by corruption discovering, cautiously, that other things existed.

”It is reading the network,” Isha said. ”Not consuming. Reading. The pits are processing the ambient signature the way they would process environmental data in the containment. Passively. Without metabolic engagement.”

”Isha.”

”I see it.”

The chitin was changing.

It started at the joint plates — the thin translucent sections between the major armor panels, flexible enough to allow movement, thin enough to pass bioluminescence. They had been translucent since the day the creature hatched in a corruption-saturated tunnel. Thinness was a feature of chitin grown where energy was abundant, and density had never been necessary.

The Pavilion’s energy was not corruption.

The plates thickened. Slowly. The translucence dimming — not darkening, not discoloring. Becoming dense. The chitin taking in clean divine essence and using it the way a starved body uses proper food: filling gaps, reinforcing structure, building thickness in places that had never had any.

”The density of the primary joint plates has increased by a measurable margin since it crossed my threshold,” Isha said, and his voice had changed. The fear was still in it. But something had arrived beside the fear — the keeper’s instinct, the scholar’s appetite, a being who catalogued everything, encountering data that existed in no archive he had ever maintained. ”It is not feeding. The pathways are still dormant. It is integrating. Absorbing trace energy through a mechanism I have never observed and cannot name, and using it structurally.”

”Is it hurting the Pavilion?”

”The draw is negligible. Less than the wyrmlings take in an hour of practice.” A pause. ”Jayde. If this is accurate — if Charling chitin can take in energy that is not corruption and strengthen from it —”

”Then the prohibition was written for a version of them that isn’t the only version.”

”Then ninety-eight thousand years of certainty has just been called into question by an insect standing in my entrance hall,” Isha said, ”and I do not know whether I am appalled or delighted, and I suspect the answer is going to be both for some time.”

***

It went past the garden without stopping.

Green’s beds ran along the eastern side of the courtyard — everything she had ever coaxed into growing in a soul-space, some of it not found anywhere on Doha, all of it hers in a way that had nothing to do with ownership. And in the middle of it, in a ring of pale stone, the seedling: two unfurled leaves, silver, no taller than a child’s hand.

Isha’s light went with it every step of the way.

The mantis turned its pits toward the beds. Read. Catalogued. Did not slow down. Went past a stand of something rare and extremely fragile with a body big enough to have flattened all of it without noticing, and did not touch a leaf.

”It routed around the beds,” Isha said, faintly. ”It did not step in them. It did not consider stepping in them.”

”It’s spent a year moving through corridors where the wrong footfall got somebody killed.”

”Yes. Fine. Yes.” The light steadied. ”I am simply noting that it has now demonstrated better judgment than Tianxin.”

***

Then it reached the bench.

The warm bench. Isha’s bench. Formation lines running perpendicular to the heat channels, the stone shaped to exactly the right angle for leaning, the spot where Jayde had sat every evening since she first came here.

The pits read the warmth. Read the formation signature. Read the specific, intentional comfort that a fox had built into a piece of furniture for a girl who had needed somewhere to sit.

The mantis lay down beside it.

Not on it. Beside it. The enormous body folding against the warm stone the way it had folded against her cot in the containment — close enough to share the heat, far enough not to crowd. Blade-arms tucked. Sensory pits dimming to their lowest register.

It hummed. Low. Deep. Content. The sound of something that had spent its whole existence in cold corruption-saturated dark and had just found out what warmth was like when it came off a thing that was not trying to kill you.

The golden light did not say anything for a while.

”It is beside the bench,” Isha said eventually.

”Yes.”

”Not on it.”

”Not on it.”

”I set that condition two days ago in a courtyard, as a joke, to a woman I assumed would ignore it.” The light held on the creature lying on his floor, next to his bench, in his entrance hall, inside his Pavilion. The thing the prohibition existed to prevent. The thing that was, by every diagnostic he owned, not a threat. The thing that was lying on warm stone with its pits shut, getting stronger off the energy his own network produced, and humming.

”It heard me,” Isha said.

”It hears everything.”

”I am going to need considerably more than a moment.”

***

The naming happened that evening, and went exactly as badly as he had predicted.

The estate’s main room. Cushions, tea, the brazier, not enough cups. The mantis lay outside the open courtyard door with its head inside the room, because there was no version of the room that could hold it and no version of the mantis that intended to be outside while the people were in.

”It needs a name,” Tianxin said. She had been saying this for two days, at increasing volume and decreasing patience.

”Names matter,” Yinxin said. ”We should be thoughtful.”

”I have been thoughtful. I have been thoughtful for two entire days.”

”Discipline,” Yinxin said, without looking up from her tea.

”I have a list,” Shenxin said, and produced a folded paper from somewhere, covered edge to edge in small neat handwriting.

”He has a list,” said Tianxin.

”Alphabetized,” Shenxin added.

Eden leaned over. ”What’s at the top?”

Shenxin consulted it. ”Strategically, the name should reflect the creature’s distinguishing characteristics. Specifically, its independence from colony architecture, its tactical capability, and its unprecedented relationship with a human commander.”

”So what’s the name?”

”I have narrowed it to three candidates, each scored across six metrics.”

”Shenxin,” Eden said. ”The name.”

”Vel’tharan.”

”No,” Isha said, from the golden light. ”Absolutely not. You are not naming it after the containment. I forbid it in the strongest terms available to me.”

”It is thematically appropriate—”

”I do not care about thematic appropriateness. I care about not hearing that word every time it walks into my entrance hall.”

”Huaxin,” Yinxin said. ”Yours?”

The youngest looked up from where she was sitting with her hand flat on the head-plate, which was where she had been sitting for most of two days.

”Warm,” she said.

”That’s not a name,” said Tianxin.

”It is warm,” said Huaxin, as though that closed the matter entirely.

”Canirr has a suggestion,” Amaya said from the courtyard, in the carefully neutral tone of a Panthera about to relay something she found funny. ”He suggests ’Scout.’”

”No,” said Jayde.

”He said you would say that. He has a second suggestion. He would like to name it after the number of legs, on the grounds that precision matters and nobody has yet proposed anything accurate.”

”Tell Canirr no.”

”I have. He is smiling. It is unsettling.”

Takara, lying full length along the courtyard wall with the air of a being who had been awake for far too long: ”Name it something short. You are going to be shouting it across a battlefield eventually, and you will regret every syllable past two.”

Reiko, pressed against Jayde’s side with his rune dimmed to a sulky glow: [Do not give it a better name than mine.]

”Reiko is a perfectly good name.”

[I am not talking about my name. I am talking about the principle. Whatever it is called, I was here first, and I want that reflected.]

”How would a name reflect that?”

[I do not know. That is your problem. I am establishing the requirement.]

White said nothing from the doorframe. He had been looking at the creature for several minutes with the flat quiet of a man working through something and not yet finished working through it.

”Ashborn,” he said.

The room went quiet.

”That’s a cultivation rank,” Eden said. ”The bottom one.”

”I know what it is.” White pushed off the frame. ”Lowest tier there is. Everyone cultivates on this world, so nobody is nothing — but Ashborn is what we call the ones who start with nothing and no resources and no path up, and build anyway. Half the people in this city are Ashborn. They do not use the word kindly.”

He looked at the mantis.

”That thing came out of corruption. Out of the dark, at the bottom of everything, in a colony that would have used it and spent it and never once known it was there. It had no path. It walked out anyway, and then it held a wall for sixty days with people who also had nothing, and it is currently lying on a Silver Dragon Queen’s flagstones getting stronger off divine energy that it should not be able to touch.”

The steel gray eyes came to Jayde.

”Let them hear the word used for something that outgrew it.”

The mantis hummed. The low, deep vibration.

”Ashborn,” Jayde said, and looked at the creature — chitin still carrying the Pavilion’s residue, joint plates denser than they had been that morning, sensory pits warm and steady. Something born at the bottom of the world, named for the bottom of the world, and no longer anywhere near it.

”It fits,” Green said. She had not spoken once during the whole debate. The fractured emerald eyes were on the creature. ”It fits because it is true, and true is what names are for.”

Tianxin looked at the mantis. At the name. At the way it sat in the room — quiet and solid and unarguable.

”Fine,” she said. ”But I’m still making it a crown.”

Ashborn hummed, and the sound filled the room the way it filled every space it entered: completely, and without waiting to be asked.
