Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 472: Chapter 467: The Panthera Report

Location:Oceanus Domain — Eastern Cliff Terrace

Date/Time:Ashbloom, 9942 AZI

Realm: Upper Realm / Lower Realm

The Flicker came at dawn, the way it always did.

Takara sat on the eastern cliff terrace in his true form — eight feet at the shoulder, midnight-black fur absorbing the Oceanus morning light, white-gold lightning pulsing in slow, living patterns across his haunches and spine. The electric mane crackled faintly with each breath. The amber eyes, burning with an intelligence that predated most civilizations, were fixed on the horizon where the sea met the sky and neither one had anything useful to say about the woman sealed inside a mountain six hundred miles south.

Six months. One hundred and fifty-two days since the seal had closed. One hundred and fifty-two mornings on this terrace, gathering the Flicker’s dawn report, filing the data, building the intelligence picture that Jayde would need when she walked out. If she walked out. The thought wasn’t doubt. It was the professional acknowledgment of a five-thousand-year-old protector who had watched this soul die twice and had no intention of watching it die a third time but understood that intention was not the same as control.

He couldn’t reach her. The seal was absolute. The dimensional membrane that separated the Vel’thari Containment from the rest of Doha was impervious to everything the Oceanus Domain’s formation masters had tested — and they’d tested at Takara’s request, because the Panthera’s first instinct when a charge disappears behind a wall is to go through the wall. The wall held. It would hold for another two hundred and thirteen days, and then it would open, and Jayde would either walk out or she wouldn’t.

He’d wanted to break it. In the first weeks, when the rage was fresh and the frustration was a living thing behind his ribs, he’d sought out anyone in the Oceanus Domain who might know how to crack a dimensional seal. He’d been thorough. He’d been desperate. And then the Beast Lord had summoned him.

The conversation had been brief. The Beast Lord did not waste words on things that were not negotiable.

Leave the seal alone.

Takara had pushed. He was five thousand years old. He did not take orders easily, and the woman sealed inside that mountain was his charge, and the Panthera did not abandon charges.

Breaking that seal would lead to the doom of Doha. The Beast Lord’s voice had been absolute. Not threatening. Factual. The way you state gravity or mathematics. You do not know what that seal contains. I do. And I am telling you: leave it alone.

He hadn’t explained what the seal contained. Hadn’t needed to. The weight of the words — and the age behind them — was enough. The Beast Lord knew things about the sealed dimension that the Academy, the Temple, and every political institution on Doha didn’t.

But Takara had been given something else. A promise.

Reiko holds an equal contract with your charge. The bond is active across the seal — thinned but intact. If the girl faces mortal danger, Reiko will feel it. And if Reiko feels it, I will know. The Beast Lord’s eyes had held Takara’s with the steady certainty of a being who had been keeping promises for longer than most civilizations had been keeping records. I will not allow my closest friend’s daughter to die on my watch. Should the worst come, I will intervene personally. You have my word.

The word of the Beast Lord was not a diplomatic courtesy. It was a binding.

So Takara waited. Not because he’d chosen patience — patience was not in the Panthera vocabulary. Because the safety net existed. Reiko’s bond carried Jayde’s presence across the seal: alive, fighting, stressed but not dying. If that signal changed — if the bond screamed instead of hummed — the Beast Lord would act. Takara didn’t know what that action would look like, and he suspected the answer was something the Hollows had never faced.

Until then: patience. The team. The network. The readiness.

The Flicker was the team’s heartbeat. Panthera didn’t communicate in words across distance. The Flicker was presence: a shared awareness that pulsed through the bond connecting all five members of the protect detail, carrying location, status, and emotional state in a frequency that was felt rather than heard. When Canirr planted a sensor in the eastern marshlands, Takara felt it: a brief brightening of the silver thread, a pulse that said here, alive, working. When Suki killed something in the western passes, the thread darkened briefly with the specific frequency of a predator completing a hunt. When Prota’s metal foreleg ached in the northern cold, the gold thread carried the ache: muted, stubborn, ignored.

And when Amaya sat on her cliff overlooking the Harrowing’s sealed entrance, the mottled thread carried what it always carried: vigilance. Steady. Unbroken. The master tracker who had been watching the seal for six months without moving, reading the dimensional membrane with the runic markings on her nose that could detect fluctuations no other instrument on Doha could measure.

Takara gathered the Flicker’s dawn report.

Canirr’s thread came in sharp and efficient. The reconnaissance specialist worked as he’d worked for four thousand years: fast, silent, thorough.

The eastern Lower Realm was mapped. Not the surface — the Academy had surface maps. The SUBSURFACE. Canirr had been running the ley-line network beneath the eastern territories for three months, his sleek silver form moving through drainage channels and cultivation caves and the deep geological passages that connected the Lower Realm’s essence infrastructure. The pale silver eyes read energy signatures the way a cartographer reads terrain: systematically, missing nothing.

Eight hundred and forty-seven worm sensors planted. Each one a tiny formation node, keyed to detect the specific corruption signature of the parasitic colonies that threatened the dimensional fabric. Canirr had designed the sensor network himself — adapted from hunting techniques the Panthera had used for millennia to track prey across territories too large for direct observation. The sensors didn’t report to a central point. They reported to each other, forming a web of detection that would light up the moment a colony stirred.

Three nests located. Not destroyed; that wasn’t the mission. Located, mapped, monitored. The nests sat in deep geological pockets where the corruption energy was thick enough to sustain the colony organisms but thin enough that the colonies hadn’t breached the surface yet. Dormant. Feeding. Growing slowly in the dark.

Canirr’s Flicker-pulse carried the data: locations, sizes, energy density readings, estimated colony populations. The reconnaissance specialist didn’t editorialize. He reported. The amber-gold of his emotional register was flat and professional: done, moving to next sector.

Takara absorbed the data. Filed it. Eight hundred and forty-seven sensors. Three nests. The eastern Lower Realm was covered. Canirr would shift to the southeastern quadrant next, working methodically toward the coast.

Suki’s thread was different. It was always different.

The assassin didn’t report. She flickered. Brief pulses that carried location and status and nothing else, because Suki operated in a space between visibility and invisibility that didn’t accommodate detailed communication. She was there. She was working. The western approach was being handled.

The details came in fragments over weeks, assembled from the Flicker’s background frequency rather than direct pulses. Suki had covered the western mountain passes. The passes were clear — no colonies, no corruption pockets, the geological structure too dense and mineral-rich for the parasites to establish. She’d moved south through the forested lowlands, where the terrain opened up and the corruption readings became more interesting.

Two possible sites. Anomalous readings that warranted deeper investigation. Suki was investigating. Silently. The midnight-black fur that absorbed light made her functionally invisible in the forest canopy, and the deep purple eyes flecked with gold tracked corruption signatures with the patience of a predator who understood that finding the threat was more important than killing it.

A merchant convoy had reported a sighting three weeks ago: a creature the size of a horse, black as the space between stars, moving through the treeline at dusk. The merchant had assumed bear. His guards had assumed large cat. Neither had considered that the thing watching them from the shadows was four thousand years old, that her deep purple eyes flecked with gold could count the hair on a target’s head from fifty meters, and that she could have killed every member of the convoy in the time it took to draw a sword.

Suki let them pass. The convoy’s guards would tell the story in taverns for years — the shadow in the trees, the flash of gold in the dark. They’d never know how close they’d been to something that moved through the world like a blade through silk, and how thoroughly they’d been dismissed as irrelevant.

The convoy wasn’t her prey. The corruption readings in the soil beneath their road were.

Prota’s thread ached.

The oldest warrior. Eight thousand nine hundred years. Fourteen feet of scarred golden fur, a missing ear, three parallel claw scars across the left flank that had never fully healed, and a metal-grafted foreleg that clicked when the temperature dropped. Prota moved through the northern territories with the relentless, grinding determination of someone who had been fighting longer than most races had been writing and who had decided, somewhere in the middle centuries, that stopping was not something he did.

The northern territories were harsh. High altitude. Thin air. Cold that crept into the metal foreleg’s joints and made the graft ache with a deep, persistent throb that the Flicker carried to every member of the team. Prota didn’t complain. The ache was data, not a request for sympathy. The team felt it because the Flicker carried everything, and Prota had long since stopped trying to suppress what the bond transmitted.

He’d covered more ground than Canirr. Canirr was faster. Prota was more stubborn. Through refusal. Prota didn’t stop for weather. Didn’t stop for terrain. Didn’t stop for the foreleg that seized in the morning cold and needed ten minutes of careful flexing before it would bear weight. He ran his sector the way he’d run every assignment for nine millennia: methodically, thoroughly, with the absolute refusal to leave a gap that something could crawl through.

The younger Panthera respected him. Not for his age — age was common among immortals. For his consistency. Prota had never missed an assignment. Never failed a protect detail. Never lost a charge. The scars and the missing ear and the metal foreleg were evidence of what that record had cost, and he wore them without comment, because the Panthera didn’t decorate their failures. They survived them and moved on.

Four hundred sensors planted in the north. No nests found. The northern territories were clean — too cold, too mineral-dense, the geological conditions hostile to the parasites’ corruption-dependent biology. Prota was moving east, where the terrain warmed and the readings would change.

The amber-gold eyes, set in a face that had more scars than smooth fur, tracked the horizon with the specific patience of a warrior who had learned that the most important quality in a protector was the willingness to do the boring, grinding, unglamorous work of making sure nothing was there.

Amaya’s thread was the steadiest.

The master tracker sat on her cliff above the Harrowing seal. The same cliff. The same position. Six months. The mottled gray-and-silver fur shifted in the ocean wind, the heterochromatic eyes — one silver, one gold — fixed on the dimensional membrane that sealed the entrance to the Vel’thari Containment.

She hadn’t moved. Not in any way that mattered. She ate when the Oceanus attendants brought food. She slept in two-hour intervals, Panthera field sleep: light, alert, ready. She groomed when the salt air matted her fur. But she didn’t leave the cliff. Didn’t patrol. Didn’t hunt.

She watched.

The golden runic markings on her nose glowed faintly in the dawn light. The markings were old — older than Amaya herself, inherited from a lineage of trackers that predated the Panthera’s current organizational structure. They read dimensional fabric the way Canirr’s eyes read energy signatures: with a precision that no instrument could match. And what they read from the Harrowing’s seal was the same thing they’d read every morning for six months: stable. Intact. Sealed.

And behind the seal, too faint for anyone but a master tracker with inherited runic markings to detect: two presences. Alive. Moving. Fighting. The runic readings couldn’t tell Amaya details — not locations, not health, not the specifics of what the two women inside were doing. Just presence. The biological confirmation that the seal contained living things, and those living things were still living.

Some mornings, the presences flickered. Brief moments when the readings dimmed, the biological signatures dropping to levels that the runic markings read as stress or injury or exhaustion. Amaya sat through those flickers without moving, the heterochromatic eyes locked on the seal, the thread she sent through the Flicker carrying nothing but steady, implacable certainty. The presences always strengthened. The flickers always passed. The women inside were surviving whatever was happening to them, and Amaya would be here when they came out.

The other Panthera didn’t ask about the flickers. The Flicker carried enough. They felt the dips in Amaya’s thread — the moments of held breath, the tightened vigilance — and they understood what was happening without needing words. Their charge was alive. Their tracker was watching. The seal held.

It was enough. It had to be.

Takara gathered the dawn report and held it in the amber stillness of a mind that had been guarding something precious for five thousand years.

Eight hundred and forty-seven sensors east. Four hundred north. Two possible sites west. Three confirmed nests. The Lower Realm’s subsurface mapped to a depth and precision that the Academy, the Temple, and every political institution on Doha couldn’t match. Four Panthera, operating in silence, building an intelligence network that would be waiting when Jayde walked out of the Harrowing.

Below the cliffs, deep in the Oceanus Domain’s training grottos, Reiko was being rebuilt. Takara could feel the shadowbeast through the Domain’s ambient energy — the mercury rune’s signature, strengthening week by week as Fahmjir’s training pushed the young male toward whatever evolution was waiting for him. The protector was becoming something more than he’d been, and the process was loud enough in the essence spectrum that Takara could track it from the terrace.

Good. When the seal opened, Jayde would need everything they’d built while she was gone. The sensor network. The intelligence picture. Whatever Reiko was becoming. And the Panthera themselves — five predators who had spent six months preparing the ground for a war that their charge didn’t know was coming.

The thought arrived, the one that arrived every morning: if she walked out. The Harrowing’s mortality was real. The woman inside was operating without cultivation, without the Panthera, without anyone who understood what she truly was. The thought was dismissed, the way it was dismissed every morning, because Takara had spent five thousand years watching this soul survive things that should have killed it. The soul found a way. It always found a way. And if this time it didn’t, five Panthera and a shadowbeast would tear the seal apart with their teeth and find out why.

But that wasn’t the plan. The plan was the network. The intelligence. The readiness.

The plan was patience.

The lightning crackled across his mane. The morning light broke over the Oceanus cliffs. South, behind a seal that even Panthera couldn’t breach, the woman he’d been assigned to protect was building crossbows from starship wreckage and teaching cultivators to fight insects with physics.

He didn’t know that. But the Flicker carried Amaya’s certainty — alive, fighting — and certainty was enough.

Two hundred and thirteen days remaining.

Takara closed his amber eyes. Let the Flicker pulse. Let the dawn report settle into the patient architecture of a mind built for waiting.

The team was working. The network was growing. The seal would hold.

And when it opened, they would be ready.
