Chapter 471: Chapter 466: The Mantis Approaches

Location:Mid Ring, Vel’thari Containment — Dead Spot Boundary

Date/Time:Ashbloom, 9942 AZI — Day 152, 213 days remaining

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

The mantis was closer today.

Jayde noticed during her morning check of the boundary sensors. The creature had been holding its position on the equilibrium line for two weeks — the narrow band where dead-spot silence met corruption-saturated air, the energetic sweet spot it had chosen and maintained with the patient precision of something that understood exactly what it was doing. She’d visited it every day. Walked to the boundary. Stood fifteen meters away. Let it read her with those individual sensory pits. Let herself be read.

The distance had been constant. Fifteen meters. The mantis on its line. Jayde on hers. Two predators studying each other across a gap that neither had closed.

Today the gap was ten meters.

The mantis had moved in the night. Not a dramatic advance. Five meters, closed while the dead spot slept and the boundary held its silence. The creature sat in its resting posture — blade-arms folded, rear legs compressed, translucent chitin catching the faint bioluminescent light that leaked from the active zone — but the posture was angled differently. Facing the Resolute. Facing the base. Facing the direction Jayde came from every morning.

It had moved toward her.

She stood at the new distance and let the change register. Ten meters. The blade-arms could cover that in a fraction of a second. The spring-loaded legs could launch the creature across the gap faster than her enhanced body could react. At fifteen meters she’d had a margin. At ten she had nothing but the mantis’s continued choice not to strike.

The choice held. The pits tracked her with their individual focus. The blade-arms stayed folded. The resting posture stayed low.

She came back the next morning. The gap was eight meters.

The morning after that: seven. The mantis was closing the distance in increments that felt deliberate, calibrated, each advance testing whether the woman at the other end of the gap would flee. Jayde didn’t flee. She stood at whatever distance the creature had chosen and let herself be read.

The students at the fortress knew about the mantis. Meifen had seen it during a perimeter sweep and had nearly fired before Jayde stopped her with a hand on the crossbow.

”Don’t,” Jayde said. ”It’s not a threat.”

”It’s a Charling the size of a horse.”

”It’s a Charling the size of a horse that has had seventeen days to kill me and hasn’t. Lower the weapon.”

Meifen lowered the weapon. The Grade 5 mind processed what it was seeing — the Charling at the boundary, the commander walking toward it every morning, the deliberate, measured patience of a woman who was treating an insect predator the way you’d treat a skittish animal — and added it to the growing list of questions she’d learned not to ask.

Shenwei watched from the Resolute’s observation port. The formation-crafting instructor said nothing. But her eyes tracked the mantis with the focused attention of someone who understood that what she was witnessing defied everything the Academy taught about Charling behavior.

By day one hundred and fifty-two, the distance was five meters.

Close enough to see detail she hadn’t been able to read at fifteen. The thinned chitin patches were more extensive than she’d realized, the dead-spot starvation stripping the armor across most of the creature’s thorax, leaving the dorsal surface glassy and semi-transparent. Through it, the thoracic ganglion was visible: larger than a worker’s by an order of magnitude, the neural tissue visibly dense, threaded with pathways that the worker caste’s relay hubs didn’t possess. Eden’s theory made physical: the hardware was always there. The colony never turned it on. The dead spot had.

The creature’s breathing was visible. The abdomen expanded and contracted in a rhythm that was slower than a worker’s — measured, deliberate, the breathing of something that wasn’t running on pheromone-driven automation but was processing its environment with the energy-expensive attention that consciousness required.

The sensory pits had changed too. At fifteen meters they’d tracked her systematically, reading each element of her presence in sequence. At five meters the tracking was different. The pits oriented on her face. On her hands. On the specific geometry of her body that carried expression and intention. The creature was reading her the way a person reads a face: not for data, but for meaning.

Jayde extended her hand.

The movement was slow. Deliberate. Palm up. Open. The universal gesture of non-threat that worked across species and worlds because it showed the weapon-hand empty. She’d used it with feral animals in the Federation’s colonial territories. She’d used it with hostile contacts during intelligence operations. She’d used it with Eden, in the cistern, when the doctor had been two days without sleep and one wrong word from panic.

The mantis went still. Perfectly, completely still. The breathing stopped. The sensory pits locked on her hand — all of them, every pit on the creature’s head-plate, focused on the palm that was five meters away and radiating the divine energy that the mantis had spent weeks orbiting without consuming.

One second. Two. Three. The stillness was absolute.

Then the mantis moved.

Not a strike. The blade-arms stayed folded. One foreleg extended, unfolding from the compressed resting position with a slow, controlled precision that was the opposite of combat speed. The leg reached forward. The chitin-tip touched the ground two meters closer to Jayde’s hand. Then the other foreleg. Then the rear legs adjusted, the body shifting forward, closing the gap in increments that were measured in centimeters.

Five meters. Four. Three.

The receptors stayed on her palm. The creature was moving toward the energy, the divine signature that leaked through her sealed Crucible Core. The richest energy source in the Hollows. A feast it had been starving next to for weeks, orbiting without feeding, choosing restraint over instinct.

Two meters.

Jayde could hear the mantis breathing. The sound was different from the clicking of the colony — softer, organic, the intake and release of air through spiracles that lined the thorax’s lateral surface. No stridulation. No mandible cycling. The creature was silent in a way that Charlings were never silent: the silence of individual choice, not the silence of a machine between inputs.

One meter.

The head-plate was at arm’s reach. The sensory pits were close enough that Jayde could see the individual receptor surfaces — hexagonal, like a fly’s eye but larger, each one glowing faintly with absorbed corruption energy. The mandibles were closed. Tucked. The killing limbs pressed against the thorax, the serrated edges hidden.

It stopped. The head-plate hovered at the edge of Jayde’s outstretched hand. The hexagonal receptors oriented on her palm with the focused, delicate attention of something making a decision about a threshold it had never crossed.

Jayde held still. Let the hand stay. The hardest kind of patience: the kind that exists when every instinct says move and the training says wait.

The mantis pressed its head-plate against her palm.

The chitin was warm. Not body-heat warm. Energy-warm. The creature’s proximity to the dead-spot boundary had stripped it of the corruption-fed thermal signature that other Charlings carried, but beneath the surface, in the neural tissue and muscle bundles visible through the translucent patches, something was running hot. The ganglion. The expanded brain. The consciousness itself, generating heat through the sheer metabolic cost of thinking.

Jayde felt the mantis read her palm. The creature’s attention pressed against her skin and narrowed to a single point: the divine energy radiating from beneath her sealed Crucible Core. Point-blank. The signal that every other Charling interpreted as FEED, read at a distance that should have triggered an irresistible consumption reflex.

The mantis held still against her palm. Reading. Not feeding.

The choice, at this distance, was extraordinary. The energy was right there. Through the skin. Behind the seal. A sun pressed against a creature that had been starving in a desert of zero-energy for longer than Jayde had been alive in either life. And the creature that had learned to think was using its mind to override the instinct that would have fed it.

Because something about Jayde was more interesting than food.

She stood there. Palm pressed against chitin that hummed with the heat of a mind working, connected to a creature that had spent months building a model of her behavior, reading her energy, assessing her threat profile, and deciding — day by day, meter by meter — that the woman at the center of the dead spot was worth approaching.

The warmth spread into her hand. Through the skin. Into the muscle. The mantis’s energy wasn’t corruption — the dead spot had stripped that away. What remained was something else. Something the creature generated on its own: the metabolic output of a brain that was running harder than any Charling brain had ever run, burning fuel to power thoughts that the colony had never needed its organisms to have.

The receptors shifted on her palm. Not reading now. Resting. The focused, delicate attention settling into something that Jayde recognized from a lifetime of working with living things: comfort. The mantis was comfortable against her hand. The divine energy, which should have triggered a feeding frenzy, was instead doing something the creature found... soothing. Warm. Like sunlight on a cold body. Nourishing without consuming.

Jayde didn’t move. The Commander’s patience: the hardest kind, the patience that exists when every instinct says move and the training says wait.

Five minutes. The mantis breathed against her palm. Jayde breathed with it. The boundary held its silence.

Then the creature pulled back. Slowly. The same controlled precision that had brought it forward. The contact withdrew and the warmth faded and the gap reopened to five meters. The mantis settled into its resting posture, blade-arms folding, rear legs compressing. Not retreating. Resettling. The contact was over, but the position was closer than before.

The mantis had come, and touched, and stayed.

***

She told Eden that evening.

”Physical contact,” Jayde said. ”Initiated by the mantis. Five minutes. It pressed its head against my palm and read the energy signature at point-blank range.”

Eden looked up from the datapad. The doctor’s eyes were sharp. ”And didn’t feed.”

”And didn’t feed.”

”The ganglion. You said you could see it through the chitin.”

”Larger than I expected. Dense. The neural pathways are visible — threaded through the tissue in patterns that the worker caste’s relay hubs don’t have. Whatever the dead spot did to this creature, it’s still developing.”

Eden pulled up her Charling anatomy reference. The ganglion sketches, the nerve-junction maps, the dissection data she’d accumulated across months of methodical work. ”If the ganglion is still growing, the cognition is still developing. The creature is becoming more intelligent over time. Not plateauing. Advancing.”

”How far can it go?”

”I don’t know. The worker ganglion is a relay hub — it processes inputs and outputs motor commands. What you’re describing is something closer to an actual brain. A central processing organ that generates its own behavioral programs instead of executing colony instructions.” Eden’s fingers moved across the datapad, pulling up the neural density measurements from her last dissection. ”The question is whether the growth has a ceiling. Worker ganglia are physically limited by their cranial housing. If the mantis’s ganglion has expanded past those limits, the cranial architecture must have remodeled to accommodate it.”

”The translucent chitin,” Jayde said. ”The thinning. What if that’s not starvation damage? What if the body is redirecting resources from armor to brain?”

Eden looked at her. The doctor’s eyes held the specific brightness of a scientist who’d just been handed a hypothesis that explained two anomalies at once. ”Trade-off. Chitin production requires significant metabolic resources. If the ganglion’s growth demands more energy than the body can produce while maintaining full armor, the organism would sacrifice the chitin to feed the brain.”

”Lighter armor, faster brain.”

”Exactly. That’s why the chitin is translucent — not because the dead spot starved the armor. Because the BRAIN starved the armor. The body chose cognition over protection.” Eden paused. ”That’s... remarkable. That’s an organism making an evolutionary trade-off in a single generation.”

”Is it making the trade-off? Or is the trade-off being made for it?”

”Both. The dead spot suppressed the pheromone input, which freed the ganglion to process independently. The independent processing required more energy. The body reallocated from armor to neural tissue. None of it was conscious at first. But NOW the creature is conscious. Which means from this point forward, the trade-offs might be deliberate.”

Jayde sat with that. A creature that was choosing to become more intelligent at the cost of its own protection. Sacrificing armor for thought. Getting smarter and more vulnerable with every day it spent on the boundary.

”And the energy question?” Jayde asked. ”It wants my signature but doesn’t feed.”

”The divine energy might be serving a different function than consumption. If the ganglion is growing and requires energy to sustain that growth, proximity to a high-energy source could be accelerating the development without direct consumption. Passive absorption. Not eating the sun — warming yourself in it.”

[It’s lonely,] Zhi said through the bond. The serpent was curled in its navigation alcove, dark eyes half-closed, wings folded in the comfort posture it only showed in the dead spot. [The clicking things aren’t lonely because they’re all connected. This one is alone. It came to you because you’re warm and you don’t click.]

Eden relayed. Jayde looked at the alcove where the serpent rested.

”You might be right,” Jayde said.

[I know about being alone,] Zhi said. [Before Eden. I was alone for a very long time. When you’re alone, warm things that don’t hurt you are the most important things in the world.]

The dead spot held its silence. The mantis held its position at the boundary, five meters closer than yesterday, alive with the heat of a mind that had chosen to come in from the cold.

Day one hundred and fifty-two. Two hundred and thirteen remaining.

The first contact had been made. Not by Jayde. By the mantis. The creature that thought for itself had decided that the woman with the divine signature was worth touching, and the touch had meant something that neither of them had a name for yet.

Tomorrow, Jayde would go back. And the day after. And the day after that. The gap would close further, or it would hold. The mantis would come closer, or it would settle at the distance it had chosen. Either way, the model was building. In both directions.

And somewhere in the translucent chitin of a creature that shouldn’t exist, a brain that had never been needed was growing stronger, trading armor for thought, choosing consciousness over safety, and reaching toward the warm thing in the dark that didn’t click.
