The heat hit them first.

Not ambient heat. Not the dead spot’s neutral temperature or the corruption-saturated air of the Mid Ring tunnels. This was residual essence. The thermal signature of cultivation techniques being thrown at something with force and fury and the desperate wastefulness of people who didn’t know they were ringing a dinner bell with every strike.

Jayde stopped at the junction. The exoskeleton’s hydraulics locked at her thought, holding her in perfect stillness. The repeating crossbow was seated against her armored shoulder. Twelve bolts in the magazine. On her hip, three siege bows waited in the ring.

Behind her, Eden stopped too. The lighter exoskeleton tracked the doctor’s smaller body as she pressed against the tunnel wall, precision crossbow up, head tilted. On her shoulder, Zhi’s scales had cycled to combat silver, the serpent’s dark eyes fixed on the source of the heat.

[People,] Zhi said through the bond. Eden relayed, barely audible: ”Zhi says people. Human. And clicking things.”

Combat. Close. The sounds layered over the heat as they moved toward the junction: shouting in Doha common, the sharp percussive crack of essence techniques hitting chitin, the answering stridulation of Charlings under attack. And beneath it all, the frantic, uncontrolled clicking of a colony responding to a threat that was announcing itself with every technique fired.

Jayde reached the junction and looked.

***

Seven students.

They fought in a chamber thirty meters across, the bioluminescent ceiling strobing with the reflected light of essence techniques being thrown without restraint. Inferno bursts — orange-red, hot enough to char stone — splashing against worker-caste chitin and scorching the walls behind. Torrent whips lashing across mandibles. A Galebreath barrier flickering at the group’s back, barely holding, the student maintaining it shaking with exertion.

Grade 4 and 5. The robes were torn and filthy but recognizable. These were Academy students, not civilians. They had training. They had cultivation. They had the raw power to incinerate every worker in this tunnel if they wanted to.

And they were using it. All of it. Every technique at full power, every essence reserve burning, every strike a beacon that the colony’s sensory network was reading from kilometers away. The clicking wasn’t coming from just the twelve workers surrounding them. It was coming from the tunnels behind. Reinforcements. Drawn by the heat and the vibration and the enormous, irresistible essence signatures of seven terrified cultivators fighting for their lives.

One student was down. Leg wound. The chitin that had done it was still embedded in her thigh, a mandible fragment broken off mid-strike. Two others were holding a defensive line over her body, Inferno techniques keeping the workers at distance. The formation was ragged. Effective for now. Unsustainable.

They were going to die in this chamber. Not from the twelve workers they were fighting. From the hundreds their techniques were calling.

”Commander,” Eden said. Quiet. Waiting.

Jayde assessed in three seconds. Seven students. One injured. Twelve workers, more incoming. The students had cultivation power. They didn’t have tactics. They didn’t have information. They didn’t know that every technique they fired was the equivalent of screaming their location to every Charling in the Mid Ring.

She could leave them. Walk back to the dead spot. Maintain concealment. The tactical calculus said: adding seven untrained, essence-broadcasting liabilities to your operational security is suicide. Leave them. They’re not your mission.

The Commander didn’t hesitate.

”Cover me,” Jayde said. ”Relay hubs. From the junction.”

She stepped into the chamber.

The repeating crossbow fired twelve bolts in fourteen seconds.

Jayde moved through the fight the way a surgeon moves through an operating theater: purpose in every step, economy in every action. The first bolt hit the nearest worker’s sensory-pit cluster at eight paces, the Federation-alloy broadhead punching through the pitted chitin and destroying the relay hub behind it. The creature’s legs kept driving but the steering was gone, the body circling into the chamber wall, mandibles cycling on reflex. Dead in everything but the dying.

She lever-cocked. Fired. The second bolt caught a worker mid-charge, the broadhead entering the thorax-abdomen junction at an angle that severed the nerve bundle connecting the front legs to the dorsal ganglion. The front legs buckled. The rear legs kept driving, pushing the body forward on its face, amber fluid spraying from the junction wound in a thin arc that caught the bioluminescent light.

From the junction, Eden fired. Six precision bolts, each one targeting the ganglion junction beneath the thorax that her months of dissection had mapped to the millimeter. Three hits. Three workers’ rear legs buckled. The creatures collapsed onto their abdomens, mandibles still cycling, legs still scrabbling, going nowhere. The sound of chitin scraping stone filled the chamber underneath the students’ shouting.

Jayde lever-cocked. Fired. Lever-cocked. Fired. Each bolt finding the anatomy that Eden had taught her, the compound crossbow’s precision making the targeting possible at distances and angles that the crude stone-wood weapon could never have achieved.

The students stared.

A woman in chitin-alloy armor and a mechanical suit had walked into their desperate fight and dropped five Charlings in the time it took to draw a breath, using a weapon none of them had ever seen, without using a single drop of essence.

”Stop casting,” Jayde said. Her voice was the Commander’s voice. The register that had directed battalions and coordinated fleet movements and spoken across bridge comms during engagements where the outcome was measured in seconds. ”Every technique you fire draws more of them. Your essence is a beacon. You are ringing a bell that the entire colony can hear.”

The Inferno student hesitated. His hands were wreathed in flame, the technique charged and ready. Behind him, the clicking was getting louder.

”I said STOP.”

He stopped. The flames died. The residual heat dispersed into the cold air, and the clicking from the tunnels behind the chamber diminished by a fraction as the colony’s sensory network lost one of the signals it was tracking.

Jayde reloaded the magazine. Twelve fresh bolts, seated with a practiced motion that took three seconds. She fired four more into the remaining workers, targeting the relay hubs Eden had mapped, each bolt punching through the sensory-pit cluster and dropping the creature where it stood.

The chamber went quiet. Twelve dead workers. No reinforcements arriving yet, though the clicking in the tunnels said they were coming.

”Fall back to my position,” Jayde said. ”Now. Move the injured. No techniques. No essence. Walk.”

They moved. Because the alternative was staying in a chamber full of dead Charlings waiting for the live ones to arrive, and the woman with the crossbow and the mechanical suit and the voice that didn’t ask twice was the only person in the room who looked like she knew what came next.

They reached the fortress in forty minutes.

Not the dead spot. Jayde led them to the fortress — the old base, the ruin they’d occupied for their first months. Still standing. Still defensible. Still carrying the mineral signature in its stone that diverted colony traffic around its perimeter. She’d known they might need it again. She’d left the kill corridors intact and the ventilation system functional. The fortress was a waystation now. A place to put people who needed shelter but who didn’t need to know about Federation technology.

The students collapsed inside. The one with the leg wound was pale, sweating, the mandible fragment still embedded. Eden went to work immediately, the exoskeleton’s fine motor control allowing her to extract the chitin with a precision that made the students stare again.

”How—” one of them started.

”Later,” Jayde said.

She counted them. Seven. Three female, four male. Grade 4 and Grade 5. All from the same intake group, all pushed into the Mid Ring by swarm movement that had cut off their retreat to the Outer Ring staging areas where Academy groups were supposed to operate. They had extraction bracelets — the Academy-issued devices that would teleport them to the surface if activated near the main base. But the main base was in the Outer Ring, and they were in the Mid Ring, and the distance between the two might as well have been a continent.

One of the females stepped forward. Taller than the others. Lean. The posture of someone who fought standing up and expected to keep standing. Dual-affinity — Jayde could feel the Inferno-Galebreath signature even through the suppression. Strong. Grade 5.

”Ashford?”

The voice was incredulous. Familiar. Carrying the particular warmth of someone who’d knocked you down in training and helped you up afterward and done both with equal sincerity.

Meifen. Sparring partner. Grade 5. The woman who’d put Jayde on the mat twice in the first week and had grinned each time and said tough luck, Ashford with the easy confidence of someone who outranked everyone in the room. She looked thinner than Jayde remembered. Harder. Three weeks of surviving in the Mid Ring had stripped the casual warmth down to something leaner.

”What the—” Meifen’s eyes moved across Jayde’s equipment: the chitin-alloy armor plates over Federation alloy backing, the exoskeleton’s articulated joints and hydraulic pistons, the compound crossbow with its cam pulleys and lever-cock mechanism, the bolt quiver at her hip holding ammunition machined to six decimal places. None of it existed in any Academy curriculum. None of it should exist in this dimension at all.

”You’re Grade 2. You’re not supposed to be in the Mid Ring.”

”Neither are you,” Jayde said.

”We got pushed. Swarm movement cut off our route three weeks ago. We’ve been fighting our way back since.” Meifen looked at the fortress. At the kill corridors. At the ventilation system. At the organized supply layout that spoke of months of occupation, not days. ”You’ve been HERE? For how long?”

”Since the beginning.”

”Four months.”

”Four months.”

Meifen processed that. A Grade 2 Elite surviving alone in the Mid Ring for four months, building a fortress, wearing armor made from Charling parts, carrying weapons that didn’t exist in any Academy curriculum. The sparring partner she’d dropped twice was standing in front of her wearing a mechanical suit and speaking with the quiet authority of someone who had been running a war while Meifen’s group had been surviving hour to hour.

”How do you know all this?” Meifen asked. The question covered everything — the fortress, the equipment, the tactical command, the knowledge of the ecosystem that Jayde had just demonstrated by saving their lives with a crossbow instead of cultivation.

”I pay attention,” Jayde said.

Not a lie. Not the whole truth either. The truth would have included two lifetimes of military experience, a sixty-year Federation career, a dead captain’s weapons collection, a fabricator from a civilization that had crossed between stars, and a winged serpent that was technically a god. The truth was not something seven Grade 4 and 5 students needed.

”Here’s what you need to know,” Jayde said. She gathered them in the fortress courtyard. Eden stood at her shoulder, Zhi on hers. The students couldn’t stop looking at the serpent.

”What IS that?” one of them asked.

”My companion,” Eden said. No further explanation needed. Zhi’s dark eyes regarded the student with the measured evaluation of a creature that had decided these new people were not clicking things and were therefore tolerable.

Jayde briefed them. The Charling ecosystem. The caste system — workers, combat castes, the three-ring structure. The pheromone navigation. The patrol intervals. The divine-blood prohibition and what it meant for essence use.

”Your cultivation is your greatest asset and your greatest liability in here,” Jayde said. ”Every technique you fire broadcasts your position to the colony. The stronger the technique, the further the broadcast. What you’ve been doing — full-power Inferno bursts, Torrent whips, Galebreath barriers — is the equivalent of lighting a bonfire in a dark room full of predators.”

”So we don’t fight?” Meifen’s voice was steady. Not challenging. Professional. The tone of a Grade 5 who was used to being the competent one in the room and was recalibrating.

”You fight SMART. Essence for emergencies only. Manual weapons when possible. Crossbows.” Jayde held up the repeating crossbow. ”I can teach you to build these. I can teach you the anatomy — where to aim, what kills, what cripples, what buys you thirty seconds.”

She drew a rough sketch on the stone floor with a chitin fragment, the same body plan she’d drawn on the datapad for Eden months ago. ”Workers. What you’ve been fighting. The weakest caste. They have no eyes — the pits on the front plate read heat, vibration, and chemical trace. Behind the pits: the relay hub. Destroy it and the body loses coordination. The thorax-abdomen junction is the thinnest chitin on the body. A bolt placed there severs the rear legs from the front.” She tapped the sketch. ”Two targets. Learn them. That’s the difference between wasting twelve Inferno techniques on something that shrugs them off and putting one bolt through the right spot and walking away.”

Meifen crouched beside the sketch. Her dual-affinity mind — the engineer’s instinct that came from manipulating two essence types simultaneously — was already running the calculations. ”The crossbow bolts bypass the chitin’s essence-resistance. Because they’re physical, not essence-based.”

”Exactly. Charling chitin evolved to absorb corruption energy. Essence techniques are similar enough in signature that the chitin partially resists them. A piece of metal at velocity doesn’t carry an essence signature. The chitin has no defense against something it wasn’t designed to stop.”

”That’s—” Meifen stopped. Looked at the crossbow again. ”That’s brilliant.”

”That’s physics,” Jayde said.

Seven faces. Fear and exhaustion and the first tentative edge of something that wasn’t hope — too early for hope — but was at least the absence of despair. The woman in the mechanical suit knew things. The woman with the crossbow had killed twelve workers without using cultivation. The woman who spoke like a commander was offering to teach them how to survive.

Meifen looked at Jayde. The sparring partner’s eyes were steady.

”Teach us,” she said.

The clicking outside the fortress walls continued its pattern. The colony didn’t know that the population inside had just grown from two to nine. The mineral stone kept its secret. And in the courtyard, a Grade 2 Elite who was considerably more than her rank suggested began explaining to seven students how to kill insects with physics.

Eden set up a triage station. Zhi watched from her shoulder, wings half-lifted, dark eyes tracking the new faces with the cautious curiosity of a child meeting strangers for the first time.

[They’re loud,] Zhi observed. [And scared. Like me. Before.]

Eden put her hand on the serpent’s back. ”They’ll learn,” she said quietly. ”The way we did.”

Day one hundred and twenty-five. Two hundred and forty remaining.

The fortress had people in it again.
