Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 399: Chapter 394: The Web

Location:Kael’thoren / Demon Realm — multiple deployment sites

Date/Time:Early Voidmarch, 9940 AZI

Realm:Demon Realm (Upper Realm)

The schematics arrived with news that changed everything.

Heiteng delivered both in the same briefing. The gate locator design — complete, refined, ready for reproduction. And the discovery that had come with it: she had found a gate in the Lower Realm. Accidentally. A calibration test — two buried test pieces expected, three signals returned. The third was real. Buried near a Temple facility. A complete formation ring dug up intact — seven crystals, shielding, conduits.

Gates in the Lower Realm, too. The invasion infrastructure wasn’t limited to the demon realm.

”She’s studying the intact gate,” Heiteng said. ”A complete assembly — not fragments.”

Ren absorbed that. Gates here. Gates there. The same architecture. The same patience. The scope of what they were fighting expanding with every piece of intelligence that crossed the relay between two commanders who had never met.

”Get the schematics to Kaelen,” Ren said. ”Now.”

Kaelen’s workshops produced the first gate locator in four days.

The strategist had taken the schematics apart and rebuilt them with the particular focus of someone who understood that speed mattered more than elegance. The original design was elegant — Kaelen had called it brilliant, and the word still sat in the war council’s memory like a stone dropped in water. The reproduction was functional. Calibrated to the inverted shielding frequency that the original designer had identified. Ready for deployment.

The first unit went to the heartland. The area around Kael’thoren — the military seat, the densest concentration of garrison infrastructure in the realm. If the hollow ones had planted gates, they’d plant them near the places that mattered.

The locator found seven gates within the first day.

Seven. In the heartland alone. Buried deep. Shielded. Dormant. Seven teleportation circles that could have opened simultaneously and delivered thousands of armed bodies into the heart of the demon realm’s military infrastructure. The positioning was surgical — two flanking the main garrison approach roads, one beneath the supply depot that fed the eastern defensive line, one near the communication relay that coordinated the northern watch posts. Each gate placed to maximize the paralysis of command and supply in the first moments of an attack.

Ren stood over the map. Seven new marks. Red, like the original thirty-one. Not random. Not scattered. Placed by someone who understood the demon realm’s military architecture intimately — who knew which roads carried what, which depots supplied whom, which relay stations connected which garrisons.

”More units,” Ren said.

The workshops scaled. Ten units by the end of the first week. Twenty by the second. Each one deployed to a different region — the heartland expanding outward, the frozen north, the Furnace Coast, the western ports, the eastern mountain passes.

The count climbed.

Seven became nineteen when the second wave reached Vel’tharon — the old merchant city. Nineteen gates around a city built for trade. The hollow ones hadn’t just targeted the military. They’d targeted the economy — gates near the grain warehouses, the essence-crystal markets, the formation-powered cold storage that preserved the agricultural surplus that kept eight million demons through the winter months. The invasion plan wasn’t just about killing soldiers. It was about starving survivors.

Nineteen became forty-three when the eastern mountain deployments reported. The defensive line — the passes that had held during every Zartonesh invasion. The gates weren’t in front of the defensive positions where the enemy attacked from. They were behind. Behind the garrisons. Behind the supply caches. Behind the medical stations, where wounded demons were treated and returned to the line. The invasion plan didn’t need to breach the mountain defenses. It needed to make them irrelevant — open gates at their backs and let the defenders discover they were surrounded.

Forty-three became sixty-eight when the Furnace Coast came online. The forges. The workshops. The weapons production facilities. Gates near every major forge complex — the places that produced the blades and formation arrays and Voidshadow restraints that armed the realm’s military. Disable the forges, and the army couldn’t rearm. A war of attrition was won before the first battle ended.

Sixty-eight became one hundred and twelve. The western ports — gates near the cliff lifts, cutting off naval retreat and Elven trade. The agricultural districts — gates in the farmland that produced the food. The road networks connecting everything — gates at the crossroads, the bridges, the narrow passes where a single blocked route could isolate entire regions.

By the end of the third week, with thirty-two units deployed, the count stood at one hundred and twelve confirmed gates. Less than a quarter of the realm scanned.

The pattern told the story. This wasn’t an invasion plan. It was an extinction plan. Every gate placed to ensure that when the portals opened, the demon realm would lose its military command, its supply lines, its food production, its weapons manufacturing, its trade routes, its defensive positions, and its communications — simultaneously. In the same heartbeat. Before a single demon understood what was happening.

The pattern was clear. The gates clustered around population centers, garrison positions, and administrative infrastructure. The heaviest concentration around the heartland — Kael’thoren, Vel’tharon, the agricultural districts that fed the remaining population. Secondary clusters along the defensive line at the eastern mountains. Tertiary placements near the western ports and the Furnace Coast forges.

Every critical piece of the demon realm’s infrastructure. Every location that mattered for the functioning of a civilisation. A gate nearby. Dormant. Patient. Waiting.

”Extrapolation,” Kaelen said. The strategist’s pale silver eyes on the map. ”Based on the density in the scanned regions — if the pattern holds across the realm — we’re looking at three hundred to four hundred gates. Minimum.”

Three hundred. Minimum. The thirty-one they’d found from Saelith’s intelligence had been a fraction. A sliver. The tip of something that went so deep into the demon realm’s geography that removing it all would take years.

”Each gate transports roughly two thousand,” Jhirek said. The warmaster’s voice flat. The tone of a soldier doing math he didn’t want to do. ”Three hundred gates. Six hundred thousand. Simultaneously.”

Six hundred thousand bodies. Pouring through teleportation circles that opened inside the demon realm’s defensive perimeter. Behind the garrison lines. Inside the cities. In the heartland.

While the Zartonesh attacked from outside.

The war council sat with that number. Six hundred thousand from inside. Unknown numbers from outside. Against a realm of eight million.

One of the remaining two hollow ones surfaced that week.

Not found. Surfaced. The distinction mattered.

It first appeared at the northern border. A patrol team sweeping the Shatter Wastes — the frozen mountains where the peaks pierced the cloud layer, and the valleys below existed in permanent twilight. Routine work. Checking for Zartonesh incursion signs, the same patrol routes that hadn’t changed in millennia.

The point scout noticed the figure first. A lone demon walking south through a mountain pass. No supplies. No escort. No cold-weather gear — and in the Shatter Wastes, that meant dead within hours for anyone below Blazecrowned. The figure walked as if the cold didn’t exist. As if the wind cutting through the pass at speeds that could strip skin from bone was an inconvenience rather than a threat.

No cultivation signature matched any registered demon in the northern garrison network.

The patrol approached. Standard formation. Three in front. Two flanking. The point scout called out the halt.

The figure stopped. Turned. The copper eyes — borrowed, stolen, belonging to a demon who had probably been dead for centuries — looked at the patrol with the calculation of something measuring whether it could kill six armed demons before they called for support.

It decided it couldn’t. It ran.

It shed its skin in the pass — alabaster erupting through jade, the transformation happening mid-stride. The feathered wings tearing free, catching the mountain wind, the hollow one launching upward between the cliff walls. Radiance blasting downward — the golden-white light scorching stone, turning snow to steam, the narrow pass filling with light that burned.

The patrol fell back. Two with burns. One with damaged eyes — the Radiance afterimage seared into his vision. They sealed the pass. Called for support.

By the time Ren’s decapitation team arrived — Voidshadow restraints, practiced efficiency, seventeen kills behind them — the hollow one had burrowed into the cliff face. Hidden inside the mountain itself. The Radiance signature flickering deep in the stone like a candle behind thick glass.

They dug it out. Hours of careful excavation — formation blasts cracking the rock, teams pulling rubble, the mountain groaning as they carved into its bones. The hollow one fought from inside a crevice barely large enough to contain its true form. Wings crumpled against stone. Porcelain armor cracking. Starlight eyes burning in the dark. Radiance blasts that had nowhere to go in the confined space — the energy reflecting off the rock, scorching everything, including the hollow one itself.

Desperate. Alone. The last of its free brethren. Knowing that every other operative had been taken, every crystal shattered, the centuries of patient infiltration reduced to one creature hiding in a mountain.

The decapitation was ugly. Tight space. The team working in near-darkness. The Voidshadow restraints pinning the wings against the rock while the blade found the throat at an angle that was more butchery than precision.

Crystal shattered in the cave. The scream bouncing off the walls. The freed souls rising through the gap they’d cut in the rock — faint lights drifting upward into the permanent twilight of the Shatter Wastes, heading for a Tree they’d been kept from for centuries.

Eighteen down. One at large.

The last one didn’t surface. Didn’t run. Didn’t make mistakes. The basin programme continued. The surveillance nets stayed active. Kaelen’s behavioural analysis teams monitored every garrison, every administrative post, every clan holding in the realm — watching for the zero-reaction anomaly, the quiet transfer request, the subtle repositioning of someone who knew the net was closing.

Nothing. The last hollow one had gone completely still. Wherever it was, whatever demon face it wore, it had stopped moving, stopped communicating, stopped everything that might distinguish it from the eight million genuine demons around it. The survival instinct of something ancient and patient — the understanding that stillness was its only remaining advantage against a king who could read the Common Path and a locator that could see through shielding.

One hollow one. Somewhere. Invisible. Waiting.

And the leader. The one Saelith’s intelligence had warned about. The one who wanted Ren’s body. Still hidden. Still patient. Not running. Not panicking. The hollow ones’ brethren had been killed, their gates were being found, their centuries of infiltration were being dismantled — and the leader had done nothing. No retaliation. No escalation. No visible response at all.

That worried Ren more than the gates. An enemy who panicked could be predicted. An enemy who stayed silent while everything burned around it was either broken or planning something worse.

”One hundred and twelve gates confirmed,” Ren told Heiteng through the crystal that evening. ”Less than a quarter of the realm scanned. Kaelen projects three to four hundred minimum.”

The mercury silver eyes steady.

”Tell her —” The emphasis. The ears warming. Still. Every time. ”Tell her the schematics worked. Her design is finding them.”

He paused. The beast pressing forward. Not demanding. Offering. The gentleness it had learned since the voice.

”And tell her that what she built may have saved the demon realm. Not ’may.’ It has. The excavation plan would have taken decades and missed half of them. Her device found a hundred and twelve in three weeks. Tell her that.”

Heiteng’s mouth didn’t twitch this time. The mercury silver eyes carrying something closer to respect — for the woman on the other end of the relay, and for the demon king who could say her with that much weight and still not know her name.

”I’ll tell her,” Heiteng said. ”Every word.”

The crystal dimmed.

You should have told her yourself, the beast said. Quietly.

”I know.”

Next time.

”Next time.”

The war council chamber. The map on the table — red marks multiplying with each deployment wave. One hundred and twelve gates confirmed. Hundreds more waiting to be found. One hollow one hiding. The leader silent. The web visible now, spreading across the demon realm like veins beneath skin.

Visible things could be destroyed. But the silence from the leader sat in Ren’s chest like a cold stone.

Something was coming. Something that three hundred gates and eighteen dead hollow ones had been the preparation for, not the execution of.

The hunt continued. But the shape of what they were hunting had changed.
