After Surviving the Apocalypse, I Built a City in Another World

Holt City

Inside the Royal Palace

”Thank you so much, sir!” Milo bowed to Cauis, who was currently visiting the Prince’s palace. At this time, there was a letter in front of him.

He stared at it for a while before sighing. ”Very well. I will send this along with my letter,” he said, then his eyes met with Prince Alain, who nodded, as if quite proud of helping his page.

First of all, Cauis had no idea that the ’slave’ he bought on a whim and brought here to curry favor was now so bold as to ask a Prince a favour.

However, as much as he wanted to reprimand him, he didn’t. The Prince didn’t seem offended for some reason, which was impressive in its own way.

Not to mention, when he confirmed that Milo was from the same place as the Alterrans, it kind of made sense.

Those people didn’t quite look at nobility here the same way as they (the locals) did, so he shouldn’t be surprised that the boy—as meek as he was when they met—found a bit of confidence to ask nobles for things.

The meek kid who couldn’t even look at him in the eye. Now he seemed to be quite close with some of the more powerful people, at least in terms of status, in the human realm.

That said, Cauis knew their movements of rescuing and consolidating their people, the Terrans, so there wasn’t anything wrong with doing this for the boy. He sent letters to Alterra’s side every two or three weeks, anyway.

Quite a few letters, too. He had frequent exchanges with his old friend, Orion, his business partners, the Cooke brothers, and even the people from the Intelligence Department.

As long as it wouldn’t put Holt at a disadvantage, Cauis was perfectly willing (and was allowed) to gain contribution points in exchange for information.

Further, because this region was so far away from Alterra, he pretty much had the monopoly on the news here.

Of course, he also gave reports about Alterra’s progress to the King. Only to him, though, as to protect his family’s interests as a trader. This was something both sides tacitly agreed with, though it was mostly based on trust.

Cauis felt very honored to have inexplicably become the bridge. He also gained a bit of contribution points just for establishing relations between the two territories.

Soon enough, Cauis was fairly certain his contribution points would enter the Overall Top 100.

Although it was not publicized, he knew through Orion that there was a record of accumulated contribution points kept in the administration department.

No one knew what that list would be used for, if ever at all, but if they did decide to use it, then it would only mean good things for those listed. His instincts told him so.

And he was right, of course.

By the time Alterra reached City level, the amount of prestige one had in this ranking meant a lot more, not just in Alterra, but all over the world.

This was something for the future, of course.

At this time, he was literally just sending letters for others. He, the heir of the Glen Family, the latest addition to high-noble families in Holt—

”I really owe you, Sir Caius,” the boy said, gentle and innocent, and Cauis had no choice but to keep his mouth shut.

”Hmm.”

Many people were also curious about the place, but he had to protect their interest, too. Unless the King ordered him to announce it, but he doubted it because he’d probably ask him to just directly connect the royal family to the ministers rather than publicize it. Even the rest of the royal family was unaware, except for the King himself.

...

Not to mention, if he told them more about Alterra, certain kids would run there. It was just that their levels were below the requirement for mercenaries so they couldn’t join in.

Travel from Holt to Alterra by beast cart would take months, and using the teleportation array also required at least level 10, not to mention its use was closely monitored, so no one could use them to sneak around.

Some necessary misdirections had to be done in sending posts, with Cauis’ side also sending letters to dozens of other territories. The Lord himself wouldn’t bother, but the people he assigned might not have the clearance to open the letters, but they could check and would know where the letters were heading.

”And make sure Alterra knows the letter is through me.”

Another favor owed to him might be useful someday.

...

At this time, Sarah and Gurnam were working hard to level up as soon as possible.

So far, through various channels and through interviewing various people in Voumi, they had listed several towns that had bought the slaves. Eian, the host aborigine was especially helpful.

He had very recently moved to Alterra with his girlfriend, but only after finishing various jobs there, including detailing everything he knew about the auctions.

He was the one who hosted these auctions, after all.

This earned him quite a few distasteful looks at first, but his charm and sincerity slowly allowed him to make Terran friends, especially the open-minded ones.

People had to live, after all. If he wasn’t cooperative with Mafo before, then he would’ve lived a life no better than an animal, if he survived at all.

The man was also helpful, and they knew he was instrumental during the wars and in rescuing hundreds of slaves still in Voumi at the time. There was also his girlfriend, now wife, who was a Terran, softening the attitude towards him.

Recently, they also rescued a few people taken from nearby towns like Twinwave (not everyone was in a close cooperative relationship with Alterra and Terrans, in general).

Because Eian was already connected with Alterra before Voumi fell, Eian managed to keep a record of the buyers during the latest auctions, including who they bought.

Sadly, this was not done during Milo’s time, and Eian could only tell them what he remembered. Still, he gave more clues than they were used to.

The people who bought Milo seemed to be from a city, but the people were mysterious and didn’t divulge their names or hometown. They did not mingle, either. The only ones who knew were dead, too, so that lead was cut.

Still, Sarah and Gurnam felt like they were getting close to something!
