Villains Aren't Stepping Stones!

Haoran took a deep breath.

The barren, wind carved granite of the mountain ridge seemed to tilt violently beneath his boots.

The jagged horizon dipped at an unnatural angle, the purple clouds turning into a dark, smeared spiral in his vision.

The immense pressure that had held his spine rigid through the battle with the Sword Emperor suddenly fractured, the sheer spiritual backlash crashing through his meridians like a river bursting its dams.

His knees went soft, the fine black and gold fabric of his imperial robes swaying as his balance slipped away.

But then, the pool of darkness beneath his heels rippled without a sound as Qing’er’s slender, dark clad frame materialized instantly.

”Young master!”

Disregarding the ache lingering in her own recently mended ribs, her arms shot forward, wrapping securely around his broad shoulders and chest to brace his falling weight.

She stared at him worriedly, ”Young master, you—”

Haoran raised a finger, and her words caught on her throat.

The gesture was small, barely lifting from his side, yet the unspoken command was absolute.

Qing’er clamped her teeth together, swallowing down the torrent of frantic questions and panicked cries that threatened to spill past her lips.

She held her breath, keeping her arms steady as she supported the full weight of his frame against her shoulder.

”I’m fine,” Haoran whispered, his voice thin, dry, and lacking its usual smooth, mocking resonance. ”I’m just exhausted.”

Indeed. A realm born within a mortal body was never meant to be dragged out into the open void to swallow the territory of a Supreme Emperor who had cultivated the sword for three millennia.

Manifesting the verdant plains, the towering spirit trees, and the crystal mountain ridges to try and swallow the Ten Thousand Sword Domain had drained eighty percent of his refined spiritual sea in a matter of seconds.

Every beat of the celestial gears within the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, every lance of solar fire that had burned away the rusted iron blades of the Ten Thousand Sword Domain, had even drawn directly upon the reserves of his Infinity Dragon God Physique.

Worse still was the terrifying toll of establishing conceptual decrees.

To speak words into the firmament and force reality to bend—declaring that an ancient Supreme Emperor could not leave, and dragging a cultivation base tempered across thousands of tribulations all the way down to the first stage of the Spirit Ascension realm—had demanded a terrifying price from his divine sea of consciousness.

He had seized the fundamental authority of creation while still encased in a youthful shell.

Back then, it felt like a searing, blinding flare of burning hot agony burst behind his temples, followed immediately by an icy, hollow pull that seemed to swallow every thought, every memory, and every wisp of his divine sense.

The space between his brows throbbed with a dull, sickening ache where his golden third eye had snapped shut, the divine pupil retreating into the depths of his skull to preserve its remaining light.

The silence that rushed into his ears was suffocating, heavy as lead, his sea of thought drained down to the very mud

The only reason why he was even able to survive was thanks to his Supreme Trinity.

Qing’er slowly lowered him, ”Young master, rest.”

Her voice was barely a breath, soft as falling silk in the cold mountain gale.

Moving with exquisite care, as if handling a piece of brittle, peerless porcelain, she sank down onto the cool, dark loam of the ridge.

She gathered his heavy frame against her chest, settling herself against the mossy base of a shattered boulder that shielded them from the biting north wind while she rested his head on her lap.

Her slender, calloused fingers—hands that had snapped the necks of enemy scouts and held curved iron blades in the dark—threaded through his disheveled golden locks with infinite gentleness.

She brushed the stray strands away from his pale, sweat-sheened forehead, smoothing the furrow between his brows where the strain of the conceptual laws still lingered.

Her touch was rhythmic, steady, and warm, providing a quiet anchor amidst the desolate, blood-drenched wreckage of the plateau.

Haoran hummed, and slowly closed his eyes.

The steady rhythm of her heartbeat beneath his cheek and the familiar, faint scent of cold plum blossoms clinging to her dark silk allowed the iron walls of his vigilance to finally drop.

The darkness pulled him down, not into a coma of injury, but into the deep, restorative slumber of an exhausted sovereign resting after tearing down a mountain with his bare hands.

Back in Ye Heavenly City.

The morning sun had barely crested the eastern peaks, yet its golden rays could not pierce the thick, oily black smoke that hung over the provincial capital like a funeral shroud.

The air was heavy with the stench of charred timber, spilled lamp oil, copper blood, and the bitter tang of burned spiritual talismans.

The sudden return of the eldest young mistress, a living Heavenly Saint whose power alone had incinerated the five rebel patriarchs in the main banquet hall, had shattered the nerve of the coup within minutes.

Once the heads of the Zhao, Qian, and Li elders were tossed out from the shattered second-story balcony of the central pavilion, rolling across the bloodstained marble steps for all to see, the tens of thousands of rebel forces immediately lost the will to fight.

What followed was not a battle, but a ruthless, systematic purge.

Ye Hongyan stood upon the high stone terrace overlooking the grand central courtyard of the Ye Clan compound.

Her robes were torn slightly at the hem and flecked with spots of dried black gore, but she had not bothered to change them.

Her long pink hair was tied back in a bun, her pink eyes, cold and sharp as twin daggers of ice, swept over the chaos below without a flicker of pity or exhaustion.

Around her, the flags of the Ye Clan—torn, burned, and soaked in soot—had been hoisted back onto the tall watchtowers, snapping in the morning wind.

”Report!”

A heavily armored guard captain, his left arm wrapped in coarse white linen soaked in fresh red, fell to one knee before the terrace steps.

His iron breastplate was cracked down the middle, his face covered in soot, but his voice was loud and clear.

”Eldest Young Mistress! The third squad of the City Guard has successfully sealed the Western Dragon Gate! The seventy two auxiliary granaries have been secured. The rebel forces attempted to ignite the grain stores with fire-spirit powder, but our formation masters inverted the aqueducts and flooded the outer perimeter. We cut down forty-five deserters and captured eighteen branch supervisors who held the keys!”

Ye Hongyan did not blink, her voice cut through the clamor like a cold blade.

”Anyone who held the keys to the food stores during a clan massacre is an accomplice to the murder of their own blood. Do not waste rice feeding them in the iron cells. Execute the eighteen supervisors in front of the granary gates so the common citizens can see what happens to hoarders. Take their heads, hang them on the iron posts, and post three hundred loyal archers on the granary roofs. Distribute five pecks of brown rice to every family whose home was torched in the lower ward.”

”Understood!” The captain struck his chest with an iron gauntlet, turned on his heel, and sprinted down the stone steps.

Before the sound of his armored boots had faded, another figure hurried up the eastern corridor.

It was an elder from the treasury hall, his grey robes stained with blood, clutching a thick stack of scorched bamboo ledgers against his chest, his beard trembled, his voice thin with grief and panic.

”Young... Young Mistress! The preliminary casualties from the residential wards have been counted...”

The old man’s hands shook as he opened the top scroll, his voice cracking.

”In the main banquet hall, forty two core elders and direct retainers perished from the initial poison before you broke the roof. In the outer courtyards, our standing garrison lost over six hundred loyal men-at-arms holding the inner gates against the Five Families’ vanguard. But... but worse is the branch residences. The Qian and Zhao members entered the courtyards of the Seventh and Ninth Branch houses before the alarm bells could fully sound. Over a hundred young disciples... children who had barely started Qi Gathering... were pulled from their beds and butchered in the gardens.”

Ye Hongyan’s hands curled slowly into fists within her wide sleeves, her knuckles turned white, the air around her boots shimmering with faint, scarlet heat that scorched the edge of the stone terrace.

The memory of the silent, terrified faces she had seen when she was a child running through those exact courtyards flashed through her mind.

She had spent a thousand years convincing herself that she despised this clan, that the people within these grey walls were nothing more than cold merchants who weighed bloodlines like bags of grain.

Yet hearing that a hundred innocent children had been slaughtered in their sleep to satisfy the petty greed of five treacherous branch houses made the fire in her heart roar with suffocating fury.

”Where are the surviving elders of the Five Families?” she asked, her voice dropping into a deadly, quiet murmur.

The treasury elder swallowed hard, sensing the terrifying aura of a Heavenly Saint coiled like a venomous viper beneath her calm exterior.

”They... they are gathered in the western execution square, Young Mistress. When they saw the five patriarchs fall, the remaining elders of the Zhao, Qian, Li, Sun, and Zhou houses threw down their weapons and knelt in the street. There are eighty four core elders, along with two hundred of their direct kin. They... they are claiming they were coerced by Old Master Zhao. They are begging for an audience with the Patriarch, asking to surrender their private spirit mines and pay three million spirit stones in restitution to spare their lines from extermination.”

Ye Hongyan let out a cold, hollow laugh that sent chills down the elder’s spine.

”Surrender their mines?” She turned her gaze slowly toward the western quarter of the city, where the faint sound of distant wailing drifted on the wind. ”Pay restitution with stones? Do they think the lives of sixty branch elders and a hundred children can be bought with shiny rocks dug from the mud?”

She stepped down from the terrace, her red silk cloak trailing behind her like a river of blood.

”My father is lying in the inner chambers with three poison needles in his spine, coughing up his own lung tissue while my mother washes the soot from his wounds. He cannot give them an audience, and even if he could, the Ye Clan does not negotiate with rabid dogs that bite the hand that fed them.”

She looked directly into the treasury elder’s wide, terrified eyes.

”Go to the western execution square. Tell the garrison commanders to seal the four streets leading into the plaza. Strip the eighty four elders of their cultivation, shatter their dantians with iron mallets, and sever their heads before noon. Every direct heir of the Five Families who is over the height of a wagon wheel shall be put to the sword. The women and children under that height shall have their family names stripped from the registry, their dantian channels cauterized, and be cast out into the northern barrens to fend for themselves as common mortals. Their estates, their treasuries, their gardens, and every single copper mine they held shall be seized directly by the Ye Clan main branch.”

The treasury elder stared at her in stunned silence, his chest heaving.

It was a decree of utter extermination—the total erasure of five prominent bloodlines that had lived in the city for eight centuries.

Yet, looking at the smoke rising from the ruined branch compounds, he knew that any hesitation, any scrap of false mercy shown today, would only leave seeds of vengeance to sprout into another massacre a hundred years from now.

”The... the decree shall be carried out immediately!” The elder bowed until his forehead touched his knees, clutching the ledgers, and backed away with hurried, trembling steps.

”Wait.”

The elder paused and turned around.

”...I don’t have to say this, but you know what to do to those who were crippled and cast out right? Make sure to...’take care’ of them.”

The elder shivered, but nodded, ”U-Understood, young mistress.”

With that, he hurried along, terrified of more ruthless orders.

Ye Hongyan stood alone at the edge of the pavilion, looking out over the sprawling city that had shaped her youth.

Below her, lines of Ye Clan soldiers dressed in clean silver and blue tunics were marching through the main boulevards.

They dragged the corpses of the slain rebels out into the open streets, piling them onto heavy wooden ox-carts to be taken outside the city walls and burned in great lime pits.

Teams of young disciples, bandages wrapped around their foreheads and arms, carried buckets of clear well water, scrubbing the dark, sticky blood from the white marble stairs of the main ancestral hall.

In the medical pavilions to the east, the air smelled of boiled bitter herbs and burning moxa.

Weeping women carried bowls of medicinal broth between rows of straw cots, where hundreds of wounded guards groaned in pain, their broken bones being set with wooden splints by the family physicians.

The rebellion had been crushed, the traitors slaughtered, and the rule of the Ye Clan reestablished with ruthless, ironclad authority.

Yet there was no joy in the victory, no cheering in the streets, and no music playing from the high towers.

The grand city felt hollow, bruised, and exhausted, having survived only because an unfilial daughter who had sworn never to return had dropped from the clouds.

Ye Hongyan turned her eyes toward the distant, barren mountain ranges far beyond the southern gates.

Her fingers lightly touched the talisman tucked inside her crimson sleeve—the ancient seal her father had given her so many centuries ago.

She exhaled a long, tired breath of cold morning air, smoothed down the scorched silk of her sleeves, and turned back toward the dark corridors of the inner estate to check on her mother’s bedside, leaving the blood and smoke of the city behind her.
